Diary of Alfred E. Potter July, 1956

01.  Sunday: [Mrs. Theodore (Anna) Drexler –Romy, Lovie Czekalski in Oshkosh.  Visit with Thres.]
02.  Monday: Store meeting Fred – Art – Joe – and myself at 8.30 A.M.  Norm Brown is with us this noon.  Tells about the severe windstorm drying up the bay across the street from his home temporarily.  The Steel Strike is on in full force, 650000 men are not working.  It may idle others if it keeps going for any length of time.
03.  Tuesday: Nick Pitz and Erwin Merrell over to talk about our store improvement.
04.  Wednesday: This is a rather cool day, temperature about 60°high.  Took a drive to Rayno Romme’s this morning, to settle up with Bernice, they have a nice place, on county trunk T off from the Butte des Morts road.  Stopped at Riverside Cemetery to water the graves.  Then to the Post Office to pick up the mail then home, lucky to be here Theresa Stadler brought the eggs.  Karl and Eddie Fretschl stop by the house, Karl expects to begin painting the cottage next week.  Don and family out this afternoon.  Our pump is giving us plenty of trouble, a leak in the control keeps us busy mopping up, back to town by 10.15.
05.  Thursday: Nick Pitz over to tell us he can move the north wall for our store expansion
06.  Friday: Mother gets a permanent today.

08.  Sunday: [9 hrs] To 730 Low Mass – Father Schorn Sermon 9th Commandment.  Day is somewhat stormy, did not get to the cottage.  Father Schorn took about 25 Mass Servers to Milwaukee to see the Braves – Cubs Ball Game.  Mother is baby sitter tonite Arline and Mary Ann to the Oshkosh to see Bob Hope in “That Certain Feeling.” The Cubs beat the Braves in the 9th inning, a grand slam are by Monte Irvin made it 10 to 6.  The children were very good.  I took a few pictures which I hope will be good.
09.  Monday: [R – L.F.  11 hrs] Our weekly meeting at 830.  Norm Brown and Earl Fuhs are there for their usual order.  Norm is with us for luncheon, which is really a dinner.  Bob Brand – Charlie Ritschie –Carl Mueller – Myself to the Board of Review at Omro to object to any tax assessments.  Work is begun on our job at the south store.  I signed contract with Brand for the fixtures at 11.30 A.M
10.  Tuesday: [R Anna Jungwirth 10 hrs.] To Kiwanis luncheon, could not stay for the program but did win Howard Godshall’s birthday present, a nice summer necktie.  To cemetery board meeting at 130 P.M.  One of our large mowers is out of commission, board authorizes purchase of a new one for about 800 dollars, with exchange for old one.  Took Karl Fretschl to the cottage.  He is going to paint it.  Mother will be out steady for the week.
11.  Wednesday: [R Mons Bastian   TG   8 hrs.] Took Emma Lemke and Thres Fretschl out to the cottage for the first time this year. This evening Annie Heip comes along. Don leave Donnie and Debbie to stay at the cottage this afternoon. They behave elegantly as mother puts it.
12.  Thursday: [8 hrs.] Brought mother to town for the S.S. Business M. Auxiliary Picnic at the American Legion Clubhouse, about 40 ladies present.  And I’m having quite a time keeping up with my bills and reports at the store.  Another day with lots of rain.
13.  Friday: Ordered out Pius School Debentures and 200 Shares of Massachusetts Investor Trust for Mueller Potter Profit Sharing Trust, my first business transaction for the trust.  To Serra Club luncheon – Richard Stack from Appleton gave us a vivid picture how the drive for a new Catholic Hi School in Appleton was oversubscribed in a few days.  Goal 600000 dollars pledges 1400000 and more to come.  Foleys who put on the drive collected 15600.
14.  Saturday: This is a busy day for Arline and family. At 8.30 they have an appointment at the hairdressers, her sister Diane is married to Bill Zimdars tonite at Zion Lutheran Church by Rev. Leo Oberleiter. Little Donnie was ringbearer and Debbie was flower girl. Reception at 9 Oclock at the Columbus Club. Mother and I took care of Markie. He was pretty good in church and very good at the house. The folks and Mary Ann came home at 12.15 A.M. Donnie slept - but Debbie was still holding up.
15.  Sunday: [R Mary Binder (Ed’s Mother) 7 hours] To 730 low Mass.  Father Milbauer.  He read letter from Bishop Bona giving the green light for the building of a Catholic High School in Oshkosh.  Donald and Eddie Heip are in Milwaukee to see the Braves beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 and 4-3.  Must have been very good games.  Ray Deal – (F Dohmen Co.) took them down.

16.  Monday: [TEG] Rose Weisheipl is back on the job after a 2 week’s vacation.  Norm Brown is with us for the usual Monday noon confab.  Ray Schmidt is taking his second week’s vacation.
17. Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon Dr. John Petersik from the State Hospital gave an interesting talk on “Mental Illness” and its treatment in the various types and phases. Aloys Kinateder is being operated on at “Mayo Clinic” Rochester, Minn. The tented showing of the Circus is a thing of the past according to John Ringling North, of the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Shows. The “Big Top” of the “Greatest Show on Earth” was taken down for the last time in Pittsburgh last night where 10000 people turned out to see the show.
18.  Wednesday: [Mother wins first prize in cards at Angies.  Score 72] Angie Jansen entertains the ladies S.S.B.M. Club at our cottage.  The weather is not overly pleasant.  Bill and Dick begin job on our boat house.  Foundation is started.  Learn where Eber Simpson lives –took Bill Scanlon (Massengill) to see him.  Bought the Thompson (clicker type) boat with motor from Burleigh Nielson.  Took a ride in rough waters to the cottage and back.  Otto and Emma Lemke are with us for supper and this evening Leon and Dolores Moore are over with their boys Gary – Leon and Jeffrey.
19.  Thursday: [R – L of Fatima  R – Mons Bastian  R – Aloys Kinateder  M 12 M] Another day of rain.  After coming to town, we had such a severe downpour of rain, I decided to bring mother in from the cottage.  Back in the city about 12.15.  After lunch I felt somewhat uneasy, as to whether we locked the cottage.  Most of the day sudden heavy downpours.  Even business is suffering.  Took a drive to the cottage this evening and found the place wide open.  I think mother and me are becoming forgetful.
20.  Friday: John Bauer 743-12th father of Mrs. Louis Mauritz – Carrie – Matt Bauer and Mrs. Joe Grable is 87 years old today.  Mother is over to Shirleys for her usual hairdo.  Had a card from Ann Kinateder today.  Aloys is a very sick man.  To K.C. Club for Friday evening dinner.  Met Tom Peck and D there, also Joe Celia, Mary and Caroline Drexler.  Met Jake and Goldie Klemmer also.  Jake tells me he is suffering from cancer evidently malignant, because the doctor tells him he may eat anything he wishes.
21.  Saturday: [Muetzel Schneider close store.] We have a number of showers today.  The old “Jacob Prellwitz” building on Oregon Street next to the Standard Oil Station on 13th Street has been raised.  Another old landmark is down.  Used to buy my shoes from Eddie’s father when I went to St. Vincents School.  It was a shoe repair shop for many years then by Zip Schuster and later by his brother Otto.  Muetzel Schneider clothing store close up shop for good.  Another business lost on Oregon Street.
22.  Sunday: [R –LADY FATIMA   Mary Mauritz 65 today] To 730 Low Mass Father Schorn.  His sermon the difference between “Modesty” and “Chastity.” Visited with Tom Peck and D this afternoon.  They have a nice apartment on E. Cecil Street, Neenah.  Tom’s dad and mother dropped in while we were there.  His dad Clarence Peck worked for MacDonald druggist in Oshkosh many years ago.  MacDonald drug store was located where the “Star Theatre” has been.  After coming home we help John Bauer celebrate his 87th birthday by Joe Grable’s.  We learn that Mary Mauritz is 65 today.

23.  Monday: [Marion Weisheipl a baby girl at 11.30 A.M.  R – Lady of Fatima R – Jake Klemmer R –Ollie Kinateder] Had our usual Monday morning meeting at South Store.  Fred and Art explain their contemplated vacation trip to Canada and next week.  Met Ann Kinateder and Dolores at North Store this noon.  Ann is going back to Rochester tomorrow.  Allie was operated last Tuesday for cancer of the throat.  His voice box was remained and also glands on the side of his neck.  Norm Brown is with us this noon.  His family moved to the lake last Saturday.  On route 10 Firelane #2 near Waverly Beach, they expect to stay the rest of the summer.
24.  Tuesday: To 645 Mass – Father Milbauer.  Father Schorn is on vacation this week.  To Kiwanis luncheon.  Doctor Ernest Smith of the Smith Clinic Fond du Lac shows slides on United Nations Stamps.  He has a special permit to photograph stamps in color.  Fred Baumgartner – Don – Eddie – Marge and Adeline are in Madison at the Rexall Holiday Merchandise showing at East Side Business Men’s Club.  Mother and I to the cottage 830 this evening.  Mary Ann stays overnite at Don’s.

25.  Wednesday: [R Lady of Fatima   R Aloys Kinateder] Today turns out to be very nice, temperature about 82°.  Don and family at the cottage this afternoon, also Mary Ann.  We took nine of the Sisters St. Vincents to spend the afternoon and evening with us.  Donald tells me the Rexall showing was very good and complete.  Little Donnie was much concerned about Sister Willette sleeping in the lake.  When he learned this was not to be he said “Now I am Happy.” E.J. Dempsey passed away at his home 189 E. Irving at 715 last evening.  Born March 18-1878 in the town of Merton – Waukesha County oldest of 11 children.
26.  Thursday: [R Lady of Fatima  2 R E.J. Dempsey  R Anna Jungwirth] Thres entertains the Ladies Auxiliary S.S.B. Men’s Card Club.  Eighteen ladies present and according to notes in our Cottage Log they all had a wonderful time.
27.  Friday: [R Lady Fatima] E.J. Dempsey services at St. Peter’s 10 Oclock.  Solemn Requiem High Mass Father McKeough –Father L.D. Scanlon – Father A.H. Trzebitowski.  Burial Calvary Cemetery.  To “Serra” luncheon.  Ed Binder has as his guest George Leonard a member of Serra at Madison.  Father Sladek is out of town.  President John Callinan gave a very fine talk on the “Dignity of Man.  Our table Albert Christl – Joe Straatz – Ed Kelly – Myself.  Steel Strike is settled today and Steel Plants expect to open the early part of next week.  A three year contract.
28.  Saturday: A very nice day, temperatures have dropped considerably.  Debbie and Donnie are over this morning, Don and Arlene this afternoon to trim our shrubbery.  Fred – Loretta Baumgartner Art and Margaret Mueller leave at 800 this morning for a trip to Canada.
29.  Sunday: To 730 Mass.  It is a high Mass to celebrate Joe and Caroline Langs golden wedding anniversary.

30.  Monday: Mary Ann is taking her vacation this week.  She is to spend some time at Don’s and help take care of the children.  Norm Brown is with us today and bring some jumbo frog legs to help repay mother for her good cooking.
31.  Tuesday: Donald – Eddie Heip and me to Milwaukee to do our Holiday buying at McClurgs.  They are in a new location, 3d Floor Kilbourn and Plankinton.  Had our luncheon at Maders (its practically a dinner) then for 4 ½ hours of buying.  Mr. Davidson waited on us.  Everybody’s dogs were sore after the ordeal.  Mr. Davidson said that after two years he’s just beginning to get accustomed to these long hours of standing.  Had dinner at Ed Lammis on Kilbourn, George’s are filled to capacity.  Cost of our two meals today 25.95.  Could’nt take this every day.  Home at 10.15.  Mary Ann helps out at the store.
