Diary of Alfred E. Potter June, 1943

01.  Tuesday: More rain in fact we almost had a deluge.  Did have water in the store basement.  Near Allenville and Neenah much damage was done.  At noon is very hot and muggy.  To Kiwanis Luncheon.  Our table Lee Conroy – Harry Brueger – Glenn Fadner and self.
02.  Wednesday: Donald and myself put on the screens at our house this afternoon. This evening I cut grass and I'm pretty well tired out.
03.  Thursday: [N] The feast of the “Ascension” To St. Vincents Church at 7 A.M.  Temperatures rise to 88° this afternoon.                  Com. Adolph Siebold
04.  Friday: [N] First Friday. To St. Vincents Church at 7 A.M.                      Com.  Donald – Mary Ann
05.  Saturday: Temperatures are down today about 54°.  Took Mother – Mary Ann – Donald to the Strand Theatre.  “Hello Frisco” in technicolor features John Payne –Alice Faye –Jack Oakie –Lynn Bari.  “Desert Victory” an actual film of the war in Tunisia.
06.  Sunday: To St. Johns at 730.  Temperature is low 52° with rain.  They have a nice fire in church and it sure feels comfortable.
07.  Monday: [N] Roger Allmers begins working at “Bell Machine Company” today.
08.  Tuesday: [N] To Kiwanis luncheon.  Rev. Hugh Midsol gives a talk on life in England before 1900 and 1930.  Our table Mike Dugan – Lou Holt –Ruben Shekey – and myself.  In the evening another meal of the Athearn Boy Scout Drive to defray Twin Lake Camp mortgage is discussed.
09.  Wednesday: To Chamber of Commerce Directors lunch, then to Pluswood Inc.  We worry are taken thru and shown how Pluswood is made.  A number of science writers and editors of technical publications and press associations were present.  At 5 P.M.  Left for Fond du Lac to meet Don Bludau, we attend Pharmacist Conference at Hotel Foeste Sheboygan.  Back home at 130 A.M. Thursday.
10.  Thursday: I’m out this morning on the Boy Scout Drive, and the finish my job.  Added 150 dollars to the fund.  Today is a beautiful day.

12.  Saturday: A hot day temperatures up to 88°.  I picked a cool job, cleaned the basement at home.  Ann was that a job, it took me from 1 P.M. to 9 Oclock to finish the job.
13.  Sunday: Pentecost Sunday, to St. Johns at 730 then to work from 815 to 1 P.M.  This afternoon took Mary Ann to Strand.  “It Aint Hay” stars Abbott and Costello and Grace McDonald, also “Message from Malta” and “Fall in” with William Tracy and Joe Sawyer.  This evening we took a drive to Berlin.  The Kujawas had gone to Milwaukee.  Stopped at the Kujawa farm Mr.is home alone, Mrs. is strawberry picking.  On the way back thru Eureka and Omro, stopped at the cottage for few minutes, and we find we have lots of “hay.”
14.  Monday: [N] Robert and Hattie Mueller’s wedding anniversary today.  Naomi and Leonard’s dad and mom
15.  Tuesday: Margaret (Mrs. Art Mueller) is operated this morning at Mercy Hospital.  Dr. Clark removed her gall bladder and appendix.
16.  Wednesday: A day of heavy showers.  Took Donald and Engelbert Poeschl to the cottage to cut hay, and it was a top job and it poured and hailed while we there.  Cork Weisheipl ride this afternoon for a weeks furlough.  This evening Thres and myself is it Tony and Jennie Pable.  Tony has been under the weather for several months.  Bob Mueller (F.W’s) brother has a birthday.  Born 6-16-1882
17.  Thursday: Dropped in to see Father Bastian for short visit.                   Requiem: Katherine Holzbauer M.O. Stanislaus Jarosch Frank – Joe –Theodore –John Drexler – Matt – Josepha Baier –Pancratius and Mary Drexler.

19.  Saturday: Took Al Mugerauer –Ed Fretchel and Donald to the cottage to put in the dock.  Also burned up some of the hay around the place.  Is quite hot again.  Visited at the “Dramatic Club” met Art Schwalm –Earl Horn –Lawrence Kuenzel – Lester Schultz there.  The boys have a pretty good time.  Got home about 11 P.M.
20.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns, then to work.  This afternoon Thres and myself drive to Milwaukee to the Cometic Show at the Plankinton House.  Fortunately we found our room there so we could conveniently meet the various representatives.  Karl Bechler took my first order –then Mr. Estes for Wrisley –ends Sam Sugar for Vantine.  We had our dinner at the Schwabenhoff Restaurant on No.  12th St. Fine entertainment and a good feed at a reasonable price.  Worked with Sam Sugar until 11.30, then a nightcap in the Plankinton Grill, to bed at 130 very tired.
21.  Monday: Temperature is 95° in Milwaukee today.  Breakfast at the hotel.  Then back to buying from the Engleman Co., and Maurie Close from Shulton then over to Yahr Lange for free feed with Mr. and Mrs. Drews Sheboygan Falls.  Then to McClurgs to see Mr. Grace and Dick Lynch.  Then back to Yahr Lange, Bludau is not in, so we attend movie and floor show at the Riverside.  “Sonny Dunham” orchestra is there. Show is very good.  Picture technicolor “White Savage” stars Maria Montez – John Hall.  At 930 to Carl and Margaret Radomskys.  Leona and Anna Drexler are there.  Had a nice visit until midnight.  Call the folks at home while and Carl and Margarets.
22.  Tuesday: Over to YahrLange this morning.  Tommy boy who is all set for a nice big order in the cottage.  We worked all morning.  Had a picture taken with Mr. Tommy Atkins and Dr. Egan, and I don’t know why.  Had another free meal at Yahr L’s with Mr. and Mrs. Powers from Waupun.  This afternoon to Mutual Drug.  John Lange is in Cleveland.  Bought some critical items from them checked out at hotel and started for home.  Stopped at Fond du Lac to see Ed Worm.  Home for supper and worked until 11.30 at the store.
23.  Wednesday: Rose Weisheipl takes a day off.  Cork Weisheipl – Joe Sr. and Donald go fishing at the cottage.  They get too small ones.  Thres and myself visit Margaret Mueller at Mercy Hospital.  She is getting along nicely.  Took Harry Ferry along.  Tonite after work visited at the Weisheipls.  Mrs. Haverty – Marge – Ellen Spellman are there.  The party is in the nature of a farewell to Cork.
24.  Thursday: Cork Weisheipl leaves this afternoon to be back on the job at Kearns Utah.

26.  Saturday: This turns out to be a very hot day, 96° in the shade.
27.  Sunday: To 730 Mass of St. Johns.  Aloys Kinateder and Anna Kinderman are married 16 years today.  Thres moves out to the cottage this afternoon.  We just made it before a storm broke.  I had to be plumber when we got there.  John Soft Sr. has a birthday.  He is 81.

29.  Tuesday: Temperatures are now down to 54° during the day, rising to 64°, quite a change from Saturdays 96°.  Jack Baker of Radio fame on Don Mc Neill’s Breakfast Club has a birthday.  Born June 29 -1908.
30.  Wednesday: I get a new job today. Postmaster of the south side. Well, I really am not a postmaster just the clerk in charge of station No. I Oshkosh, Wis.

Diary of Alfred E. Potter May, 1943

01.  Saturday: [T] Joe Weisheipl Sr. has a birthday.
02.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns, then to work.  First Holy Communion at St. Vincents this morning.  Little Fay Baier is among the First Communicants.  We have an increase in the family tonight.  A little stray tomcat jumps on my shoulder while I’m out trying to find the cause of a cat commotion outside.  He seems quite hungry when I take in.
03.  Monday: [N] Joe Baier and Art Mueller go on their summer schedule today.  Joe takes off from this noon on.
04.  Tuesday: [N] Had a letter from Donald and a nice picture of him playing on the violin.  To Kiwanis Lunch, Oshkosh bowlers receive a trophy presented by the Neenah Kiwanis bowlers.  It is a galvanized pail with the names of the bowlers.  Our table Dave Collins –Abe Kagan –Ed Ledvina and myself.  Roger Allmers would like to make a change in work.  I encouraged him to get into some other line of work as soon as possible.
05.  Wednesday: Thres – Mary Ann and myself to Milwaukee.  Arrive there about 11 AM.  Over to Kammann’s at 3052 No. Bartlett Ave.  Bought some sponges and a nice lot of chamois.  Had a nice meal at Fritz Gust’s then to McClurgs to see Ambrose Grace.  His daughter in law Margaret wrote up the order.  Then over to Mutual Drug.  Henry gave me some fast service.  And it is hot today, 84° in the shade and muggy.  Stopped at Karl and Margarets and then paid a visit to Anna Drexler and Leona at _____ South 9th Street, and where they surprized.  Then for a nice dinner at “Mammy’s” on Capital Drive.  Rain on the way home.  Home at 11.20 P.M.
06.  Thursday: Mr. Norman and helpers begin insulating our house today.
07.  Friday: First Friday to St. Vincents 7 A.M.              Com.  Donald – Mary Ann

09.  Sunday: Holy Name and Boy Scouts Troop 18 to Communion 730 at St. Vincents.  Burst Communion for children at St. John’s.  Arlene Mugerauer is a first communicant.      Com.  Mother –Mother in law – Thres – Grandma Baier

12.  Wednesday: Annual Conference of the Wis. Council of Catholic Women open to the High Mass (Pontifical) with Archbishop Moses Kiley of Milwaukee officiating.  This evening Thres and Anna Weisheipl attend the grand banquet at the Raulf Hotel.

16.  Sunday: John Beerntsen is found dead in his cottage about 11.30 today by Fred Cass.  John had left her as cottage in Nordheim on the Jackson drive road Friday evening.  Sylvester Karst had helped him plant potatoes and left him at 9 P.M.  John must have suffered a heart attack shortly after.

18.  Tuesday: Attended “Mother of Perpetual Help” devotion tonite at St. Vincents.  This is the first evening devotion I attended.  Then over to Fiss & Bills to view the remains of John Beerntsen and took along Lena Baier and Emma Siewert.  Father Bastian offers the rosary with the assistance of the Knights of Columbus.
19.  Wednesday: A lovely day.  Took a drive to cemetery this afternoon paid for care for our three half lots.  John Beerntsen is laid to rest this morning.  Took Thres and Mary Ann to see “Star Spangled Rhythm” and “Truck Busters” at the Oshkosh. Forty three Top stars are in the first picture.  Betty Hutton –Eddie Bracken Bob Hope –Bing Crosby – Rochester Mary Martin –Dorothy Lamour and many others.  Richard Travis –Virginia Christine in the second.  Had a letter from Carl J. Fretchel today.  His address Sgt. C.J. Fretchel U.S.M.C. Ser. Bu. Reg. Sta. Transient Center, 1st M.A.C. F.M.F. c/o Fleet P.O.  San Francisco, Calif.
20.  Thursday: [N] Joe Weisheipl Jr. and Edward Fretchel Jr. to Milwaukee for their examination before induction.
21.  Friday: We hope this warm weather keeps up.  It is pretty close to 80° in the shade today.  We have company tonite Harry, Agnes, Mary – Johnny Kujawa are here from Berlin.  We spend an enjoyable evening.  Mary and Johnny entertain us with singing and speaking pieces they have memorized.  They sure have good memories.
22.  Saturday: A hot day, 80° in the shade, yet they should not be called hot.  It is summer heat.  I tried a hand at cutting grass.  In the evening took Thres and Mary Ann to Oshkosh Theatre.  “Happy Go Lucky” in Technicolor features Mary Martin – Betty Hutton, Dick Powell – Eddie Bracken – Rudy Vallee.  “Henry Aldrich gets Glamour” features Jimmy Lydon as Henry.
23.  Sunday: To St. Johns at 730.  Then to work.  St. Vincents have graduation exercises today.  We attend their play “High in the Alps” this evening.  Mary Ann is a gardner.  Father Bastian invites me to sit with him.  It was a play short and snappy, lasted from 745 to 900 P.M.  After that I worked another hour and a half.  Put in 8 ½ hours today.  When I get home Joe and Anna Weisheipl are over to our house.  A few games of sheephead, a little lunch, a little chat and wow it’s 230 A.M.  Time to retire.  Goodnight or should I say good morning.
24.  Monday: [J – N] Dropped in to 1212 Minnesota St. to look over my old homestead where I lived as a boy 40 year ago, also to see Mrs. Ernestine Dumke, our old neighbor, she is very happy to see me, hugged me and kissed me, and we had a very pleasant visit. She is quite feeble, tells me if she lives until November 17th she will be 86 years of age. Father Frank Schoettl and his mother drop in to see us, at the store. Frank has a parish at Maple Grove. Leo Jungen became a papa last night, its a boy.
25.  Tuesday: [N] The Weisheipls let us read an article in the Kearns Post Review, May 18th issue giving Cork quite a write up.  Among other things it mentions the orchestras Clyde McCoy – Dan Russo – Stan Myers with which Cork played, about his sense of humor and most amiable personality.
26.  Wednesday: [N] Edsel Ford only son of Henry Ford passed away this morning at 130 at his home “Grosse Point Shores,” a suburb of Detroit.  He was chief executive of the Fort Company for 24 years.  Born Nov. 6 – 1893 in Bagley now in Detroits down town district.  Survived by 3 Sons Henry – Bentsen – William Clay and a daughter Eleanor Clay.  Adolph Seibold laid to rest.  I was appalled air.  John Tauber –George Koplitz – Frank Binder –Henry Troxell – Albert Koplitz were also bearer.  Rose Weisheipl finally gets that new old fashioned hairdo.  My afternoon off, but I work until 10 P.M.  No rest for the wicked.
27.  Thursday: [N] Joe Weisheipl Jr. and Edward Fretchel are ready to go into the navy.  Edward dropped in yesterday afternoon to say goodbye.  I gave him a wrist watch as a remembrance.  Leo Jungen dropped in tonite.  He tells me he is to leave June 8th.
28.  Friday: [N RDXMOK] Father Bastian has a birthday he is 69 today.  Thres and myself stop at Joe Weisheipl Sr. to say goodbye to Joe Jr.  Present are Mrs. Haverty – Joe Jr. and Marge, Bill and Mrs. Killian – Cliff and Mrs. Crowell.  This is Roger Allmers last day with us.
29.  Saturday: President Roosevelt has a plan to dispose of about 50 billion dollars worth of government owned war surplus equipment – material and supplies thru a budget bureau.  Joe Weisheipl Jr. is at Great Lakes to get an interview, well, maybe he’ll get more than that.  He left this morning.
30.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Johns.  Then to work.  Bade Memorial Day parade this afternoon.  About 2 Oclock I get ready to get Donald from school.  Unfortunately our Chrysler had no power and where to find a garage open on Sunday.  Finally found Valley Auto Service on Upper Main St. Needed new coils.  Started about 4 Oclock and also begins to rain.  Got to St. Nazianz at 530.  Donald is anxiously waiting and did we get in some terrible showers on the way back wow!  Got home around 730.  But Donald stays till midnight before going to bed.
31.  Monday: More Rain today.  Well I have plenty of work so it did not matter.  In the afternoon took Thres and Mary Ann to the Oshkosh Oh yes and also Dolores Kinateder.  “The More the Merrier” started Jean Arthur –Joel McCrea and Charles Coburn and “Seven Miles from Alcatraz” with James Craig and Bonita Granville.

01.  Thursday: Filed Jungen guardianship report with Wm Niemuth Register in Probate.  Had a short chat with Ellen Spellman, Cork Weisheipl’s sweetheart
02.  Friday: To St. Vincents at 7 Oclock.                        Com.  Donald – Mary Ann
03.  Saturday: Took Thres and Mary Ann to the Oshkosh tonite.  Two good pictures feature the evening Bob Hope – Dorothy Lamour in “They got me covered” and James Ellison – Jane Wyatt in “Army Surgeon.”
04.  Sunday: To St. Vincents 730 Mass.  Catholic Knights make their Easter Holy Communion.  Father Bastian speaks on the word of Jesus “Lord why hast thou forsaken Me.” Worked 8 ½ hours today.  Joe and Anna Weisheipl are over this evening.  Joe brought some very fine perch along for us.  After a pleasant visit I took Joe to work at 11.45 and then drove back to take Annie home.  Thres Fretchel has a birthday, she is 56 tomorrow.                        Com.  Camilla Micko

06.  Tuesday: [N] Took Dave Collin to Kiwanis luncheon. Our table Dr. A.C. Gifford, Dave Johnson, John Bangert, Eric Boller. Received a questionaire from the Office of Naval Officer Procurement in regard to Stanley Alfred Mauritz. Received Donalds weekly letter and also his report, he tells me he is getting along better, well, his report proves that.
07.  Wednesday: Almost route to Milwaukee this morning, the rain kept me home.  Attended Chamber of Commerce Directors luncheon and meeting.  Frank V. Lotz is in with a fair line of prayer books and rosaries.  To St. Vincents Church this evening.
08.  Thursday: Thres and self drive to Milwaukee.  The roads are not any too good.  Stopped at Mutual Drug – McClurg – Yahr-Lange Drug.  Visited Margaret and Carl Radomsky Anna and Louie are still there, they are ready to leave for home.  Had a nice steak, at their place.  Karl has done considerable remodeling, the place looks swell.  Margaret said something about the stork coming but it will be some time yet.  Arrived home about 10.30 then picked up Anna and Louie at the depot at 11 P.M.
09.  Friday: Theresa Weisheipl was operated on yesterday for cataract in her left eye.  It has been coming on for a long time and an operation was very necessary.
10.  Saturday: To the Oshkosh tonite with Thres and Mary Ann.
11.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns with C.O.F. make their Easter Duty.  Then to work.  Thres plays Bingo this afternoon at Opera House, takes along Thres Fretchel Anna Ostertag – Anna Weisheipl.  Ostertag won 400 Fretchel 100.  Rain tonite.  Worked 10 ½ hours today.

13.  Tuesday: [N] Snow today.  To Kiwanis Luncheon.  Our table Joe Drosal – Abe Kagan – Frank Fraker– Archie Gifford –Gil Labudde.  Don Bludau is in town.
14.  Wednesday: [T] And other cool day.  Visited Theresa (Mrs. Fred) Weisheipl at Mercy.  She is doing fine.  Tommy Gallagher drops in at the store, he is home on furlough for about 2 weeks.  He is looking thin.  Has been confined in hospital for seven weeks.  An appendix operation and flabitis set in.  Attend St. Vincents Lenten service tonite, after service Troop Commission meeting Troop 18 in our school library.  Present Ed Marheine– Ollie Kinateder – myself Jos. Hemmer – Scout master Paul Fink.  After the meeting which lasted until 10:00 PM over to Bill and Emma Siewert… 
15.  Thursday: [N]…A pleasant visit ends at 230 this morning.  I am a little tired when I go to work.  Had another swollen face today, do not know as CIA at what is causing it.  Thres Fretchel – Thres – Lena Baier –Mary Ilk – Annie Weisheipl played Bingo at St. Vincents this afternoon.  They all win.  Thres Fretchel calls up at 11:00 tonight, she won 14.25 at the Eagles Bingo.  Anna Weisheipl won nothing.  Katherine Weinman is chairman pro tem, of the local chapter American Red Cross.
16.  Friday: Ed Fretchel brings news this morning that Edward Jr. has an increase in the family early this morning.  A little girl and its the first baby for Ed and Marion.

Saturday: Took Thres and Mary Ann to the Oshkosh tonite.  A fine show “Reveille with Beverly” starring Ann Miller as a broadcaster and dancer, also Bob Crosby and Band – Frank Sinatra –The Radio Rogues – and Mills Brothers, also “Sherlock Holmes in Washington” with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce.
18.  Sunday: [T] To 730 Mass at St. Johns, took Mary Ann along.

20.  Tuesday: [N] To Kiwanis luncheon, Our table Ed Durler –Ruben Shakey – Dave Johnson –Lee Conroy – Gib Labudde and myself.
21.  Wednesday: Had a letter from Donald today stating he may come home for one day for Easter.  Must be back Easter Sunday 7 P.M.
22.  Thursday: Our Kiwanis Program Committee has a meeting at Gene Vogel’s office at Haase’s is preparatory for our ladies night program.
23.  Friday: [N] The day begins with rain, but turns out very fair and warm this afternoon.
24.  Saturday: A lovely day.  Donald blows into town at 12.30 this pm.  He may stay until tomorrow afternoon.  Lawrence Ilk has an auto accident.  His car turns over
25.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Johns, then to work.  It rained this morning.  After noon meal visited Anna – Leona – Romy and then out to Joe Baiers, from there to the Weisheipls and on the way home at Ed Fretchel’s.  After early supper took Father Bernard –Donald’s Latin Professor, Clarence Drexler – Melvin Karst – and Stadtmueller and Donald back to St. Nazianz.  On the way back had Brother Gordion’s father for company.  Back at 10.20 P.M.  Thres – Mary Ann – Anna Weisheipl attend the Oshkosh Theatre Laurel and Hardy star in “Air Raid Wardens”   Com. Al Stamborski
26.  Monday: Carl and Margaret Radomsky drop in this morning.  There going over to Berlin to visit the Kujawas and Margaret wants to take a last sleep in her old home at Anna Drexler’s.
27.  Tuesday: Attended Chamber of Commerce luncheon.  Our Congressman Frank Keefe is our speaker.  He urges people not to hoard money and praises Oshkosh and vicinity for the fine spirit shown in the war effort.  In the evening “Kiwanis” ladies night at Paine Hall, Algoma Methodist Church.  After the eats we are entertained by the Apollo Male Chorus led by J.A. Breese, and Jim Damon, with his daughter Sue Carrol –Jakie Dengel – Loretta Dorkoski – Richard Verhoeven, Appleton and Esther Priebe.  Our Committee Glen Fadner, Frank Thaw, Gene Vogel, Ralph Witherbee and A.E. Potter.
28.  Wednesday: Had a card from Sister Linus, Milwaukee today.
29.  Thursday: [N] President Roosevelt sat next Saturday as deadline for 70000 soft coal miners who were on the strike to return to work.  The President also returned from a 20 state war inspection tour, covered 7652 miles checking war activities and dropping into Mexico to confer with President Manuel Avila Camacho.
30.  Friday: [N 11] Anna and Louie and Romy move to Milwaukee today.  They waited nearly all day for the dray to pick them up.  Romy help load up.  The ladies visited here in the evening.  Thres took them to the depot.  Train was late supposed to leave at 945 left about 1145 due to break down of the engine about 2 miles north of the State Hospital.  Had a pleasant surprise at the store this morning.  Jack Levant from McKesson Chicago dropped in with Norm Brown.

Diary of Alfred E. Potter March, 1943

01.  Monday: [N] Forty Hour Devotion begins at St. Johns.  Had to apply for more gasoline for my Plymouth today.  Coupons “B” are gone.  Speedometer reading 44800 miles.
02.  Tuesday: Temperature is down to eleven degrees below zero this morning. To Kiwanis luncheon Dr. Gifford –Ed Lidvina –George Savage –Bart Heiss at our table.  When discussion by Rev. Douglas Anderson –Rabbi Gruen and Father Scanlon on “What will religion provide in a post war world.” A very interesting subject.  Pipkorn brings us to more tons of Buddy Stoker Coal.
03.  Wednesday: [T] Joe and Annie Weisheipl are over tonite to visit with us.  It is the first time Joe could visit with us since he has his night job.  And I took him to work about 11.45.  It was quite a treat to have Joe with us.

05.  Friday: [N] Mrs. Anton Ilk is at Mercy Hospital.  She has gall trouble.

07.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns, then to work.  Left at 11.45 for St. Nazianz to see Donald.  We took along Mrs. Frank Drexler, Alois Drexler and Mrs. Fred Karst.  The boys are feeling well.  Had a nice visit with them.  On the way had to have the speedometer disconnected on our Chrysler.  Had it done at Chilton.

09.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon.  Took Dave Collin over.  Met a friend of Dave’s –Mr. Moss who sells roofing and commercial paints.
10.  Wednesday: Mrs. Joseph (Anna) Schani passed away this morning at 410 . She had suffered a stroke. Born April 8-1892, married Nov. 25-1913. Survived by Joe and 5 daughters, Joan - Rita - Mrs. Anna Wagner - Marie of Oshkosh, Lucille of Chicago - 5 sons Aloysius - Joseph Jr. - Nolan - Raymond - Sylvester. She used to deliver milk to our house when we lived at 1212 Minnesota St. I got a job for her at Julius Martin grocery when I worked there in 1908. At that time she lived at 544-12th St.
11.  Thursday: Francis Lamb is over to date to get details on our income tax to make out our returns.  Temperature this morning is 13° below zero, this afternoon 33 above a change of 46 degrees.  This is a record for at least the last 10 years.
12.  Friday: Ed Winklebauer who was on the ill-fated “Chicago” when she was sunk by the Japs, was in the store today. He lost all his belongings, was in the water for 1 ½ hours. The water was warm but very uncomfortable on account of the oil on its surface. About 56 men and 6 officers were lost out of 1100 men. Melvin Jansen is also in today. He is stationed at Medford, Oregon.

14.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Vincents with Holy Name Society, then to work.  Or money order business is exceptional.  Had 578 yesterday and today.  Took in $11273.90 Thres comes money tonite for 2 ½ hours, so we can get the report out early.  Fees amount to 70.25           Com.  Stanislaus Jarosch
15.  Monday: Francis Lamb is in this morning to complete our income tax return.  It is a stormy morning turning into a blizzard.  I leave on the 1107 this morning for Chicago.  Martin Knauer is with me to Milwaukee.  Took streamliner from Milwaukee arrived in Chicago at 2.45 P.M.  Drove out to United Drug Company via taxi.  Frank Pa_____ took quite an order for United Wholesalers from me.  Also met August Heinrich.  Fred Wimber Jr. is looking good.  Met a Mr. Cooper at Palmer House CafĂ©.  He remembered our firm.  Had introduced Edgeworth tobacco.
16.  Tuesday: Took in the movie “In which we serve” last night at the Roosevelt Theatre on State Street.  Noel Coward is the writer – director and a star in the picture.  This morning met a Mr. Burget with the Gates Rubber Company, Denver Colo. in the Palmer House Coffee Shop.  Out to United Drug Company.  Henry Apida sells me a bill of United Drug Mdse.  The directors of United Wholesale dine at Manufactures Bldg. then back for annual meeting.  I was elected a director.  We topped United Wholesalers blessed in 1942 with         .  Attended movie “Ravaged Earth” at the Grande.  It is about the Jap horrors committed in Shanghai – Nanking and Foo Chow.
17.  Wednesday: [T] Breakfast at the coffee shop, then to Benzinger Brothers.  Met Jim Kitterick there.  Alice Walsh sold me some religious goods, could not get many rosaries.  Then checked out at the Hotel and over to McClurg’s.  Mr. Had introduced Mr. Beaupre who had been with Carson Pieri for years.  Bought quite a bill of goods from him.  Had a fine meal at the Eastgate Hotel on East Ontario St.. then to the depot.  Left on the Pennsylvania 400 at 4 Oclock, home at 730.  Jim Kitterick tells me he has already bought his coffin, thats one I havent heard before.

20.  Saturday: My Plymouth hits 45 000 miles today.  It is a beautiful day.  Took Ed and Thres Fretchel – Annie Weisheipl, Mary Ann and Thres to Oshkosh Theatre.  Jack Benny – Rochester and Priscilla Lane Star in “The Meanest Man in the World.” It is very comical.  Another picture “Chetniks” about the Slovaks fighting German rule featuring Phillip Dorn and Anna Sten.  “Vaudeville Daze” is fun, imitation of a Rio Brothers – Eddie Car – Eva Tanguay –Pat Roomy –The Whirling Camerons.  Alfred Potter furnishes the lunch and refreshments at 703 – 14th St. after the show.
21.  Sunday: To St. Johns 730 Mass and am I sleepy.  To work after mass.  In the afternoon I take a nap.  Thres takes Annie Weisheipl – Emma Siewert –Thres Fretchel to Bingo party at the Opera House.  Thres needs a 5 to win 50 dollars but it was not forthcoming.
22.  Monday: had Norbert – Art Mueller –Joe Baier – Fred Baumgartner over for a meeting at the South Store tonite.
23.  Tuesday: [N] To Kiwanis luncheon. Miss Kane M.D. and psychiatrist with the State Board of Health is the speaker. Our table Dave Collin - Ed Ledvina - Dave Johnson- Ray Baxandall. Food markets are getting enormous business in meats and cheese today. Meat rationing begins on the 29th. Had a letter from Donald today. His locker is empty.
24.  Wednesday: A lovely spring day, temperature up to 50. Looked over James Kinsler's house today. We might buy it if the price is right. To St. Vincents Church service tonite with Mother and Mary Ann. Father Ott speaks on “Anger.” After church sent a package of cookies and goodies to Donald.
25.  Thursday: [T] A lovely day, temperature is up to 55°. Frank and John Miller (sons of Louis Miller, deceased) are here on furlough. Frank says 9 days ago he was in Africa, and here he is home. He states treatment of the boys in Africa is excellent. The natives also are very kind. John was on two boats lost at sea. On one occasion he was in the icy waters for ½ hour.

27.  Saturday: Took Thres and Mary Ann to the “Oshkosh” “Desperados” in Technicolor is a good picture starring Randolph Scott –Glenn Ford – Claire Trevor – Evelyn Keyes.  “It comes up love” features Gloria Jean and Donald O’Connor.  A wholesome comic picture.
28.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns, Mary Ann is with me. Four hundred air corps trainees arrived early this morning from various parts of the country to take up training at the teachers college. Dr. Ray Wagner is a busy man taking care of many of them. Money orders are coming in heavy for auto licenses.
29.  Monday: Father Bastian makes sick calls as usual, also to Anna Drexler.  Meat – Cheese – Lard – Shortenings – Butter are on the ration block today.  What next?
30.  Tuesday: [N] Anna Drexler's house is sold today by Elsie Broche. Anna says she could laugh and cry as fond memories come to her. Delivered to her a gallon of Mineral Oil which I think will be the last while she is in Oshkosh. Intends to move to Milwaukee with Margaret and I suppose part time with Leona. This may not be the first day of spring on the calendar, but in reality it is. Temperature is up to 76° and a nice warm breeze a blowing. I have a lovely disfigured face today, puffed eyes, swollen cheeks, do not know the cause. Did not get to Kiwanis luncheon.
31.  Wednesday: Another warm day, temperature up to 77° when I get home this noon.  Visited with the Heips tonite after church.  Had a few games of cards.  I took Joe to work at 11.45 P.M.  His shift is from 12 midnight to 8 A.M.  They gave us a nice photo of them and Cork is playing with.  Temperature dropped plenty by tonite, it is 39° at midnight, a drop of 38° since noon.
