Diary of Alfred E. Potter June, 1943

01.  Tuesday: More rain in fact we almost had a deluge.  Did have water in the store basement.  Near Allenville and Neenah much damage was done.  At noon is very hot and muggy.  To Kiwanis Luncheon.  Our table Lee Conroy – Harry Brueger – Glenn Fadner and self.
02.  Wednesday: Donald and myself put on the screens at our house this afternoon. This evening I cut grass and I'm pretty well tired out.
03.  Thursday: [N] The feast of the “Ascension” To St. Vincents Church at 7 A.M.  Temperatures rise to 88° this afternoon.                  Com. Adolph Siebold
04.  Friday: [N] First Friday. To St. Vincents Church at 7 A.M.                      Com.  Donald – Mary Ann
05.  Saturday: Temperatures are down today about 54°.  Took Mother – Mary Ann – Donald to the Strand Theatre.  “Hello Frisco” in technicolor features John Payne –Alice Faye –Jack Oakie –Lynn Bari.  “Desert Victory” an actual film of the war in Tunisia.
06.  Sunday: To St. Johns at 730.  Temperature is low 52° with rain.  They have a nice fire in church and it sure feels comfortable.
07.  Monday: [N] Roger Allmers begins working at “Bell Machine Company” today.
08.  Tuesday: [N] To Kiwanis luncheon.  Rev. Hugh Midsol gives a talk on life in England before 1900 and 1930.  Our table Mike Dugan – Lou Holt –Ruben Shekey – and myself.  In the evening another meal of the Athearn Boy Scout Drive to defray Twin Lake Camp mortgage is discussed.
09.  Wednesday: To Chamber of Commerce Directors lunch, then to Pluswood Inc.  We worry are taken thru and shown how Pluswood is made.  A number of science writers and editors of technical publications and press associations were present.  At 5 P.M.  Left for Fond du Lac to meet Don Bludau, we attend Pharmacist Conference at Hotel Foeste Sheboygan.  Back home at 130 A.M. Thursday.
10.  Thursday: I’m out this morning on the Boy Scout Drive, and the finish my job.  Added 150 dollars to the fund.  Today is a beautiful day.

12.  Saturday: A hot day temperatures up to 88°.  I picked a cool job, cleaned the basement at home.  Ann was that a job, it took me from 1 P.M. to 9 Oclock to finish the job.
13.  Sunday: Pentecost Sunday, to St. Johns at 730 then to work from 815 to 1 P.M.  This afternoon took Mary Ann to Strand.  “It Aint Hay” stars Abbott and Costello and Grace McDonald, also “Message from Malta” and “Fall in” with William Tracy and Joe Sawyer.  This evening we took a drive to Berlin.  The Kujawas had gone to Milwaukee.  Stopped at the Kujawa farm Mr.is home alone, Mrs. is strawberry picking.  On the way back thru Eureka and Omro, stopped at the cottage for few minutes, and we find we have lots of “hay.”
14.  Monday: [N] Robert and Hattie Mueller’s wedding anniversary today.  Naomi and Leonard’s dad and mom
15.  Tuesday: Margaret (Mrs. Art Mueller) is operated this morning at Mercy Hospital.  Dr. Clark removed her gall bladder and appendix.
16.  Wednesday: A day of heavy showers.  Took Donald and Engelbert Poeschl to the cottage to cut hay, and it was a top job and it poured and hailed while we there.  Cork Weisheipl ride this afternoon for a weeks furlough.  This evening Thres and myself is it Tony and Jennie Pable.  Tony has been under the weather for several months.  Bob Mueller (F.W’s) brother has a birthday.  Born 6-16-1882
17.  Thursday: Dropped in to see Father Bastian for short visit.                   Requiem: Katherine Holzbauer M.O. Stanislaus Jarosch Frank – Joe –Theodore –John Drexler – Matt – Josepha Baier –Pancratius and Mary Drexler.

19.  Saturday: Took Al Mugerauer –Ed Fretchel and Donald to the cottage to put in the dock.  Also burned up some of the hay around the place.  Is quite hot again.  Visited at the “Dramatic Club” met Art Schwalm –Earl Horn –Lawrence Kuenzel – Lester Schultz there.  The boys have a pretty good time.  Got home about 11 P.M.
20.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns, then to work.  This afternoon Thres and myself drive to Milwaukee to the Cometic Show at the Plankinton House.  Fortunately we found our room there so we could conveniently meet the various representatives.  Karl Bechler took my first order –then Mr. Estes for Wrisley –ends Sam Sugar for Vantine.  We had our dinner at the Schwabenhoff Restaurant on No.  12th St. Fine entertainment and a good feed at a reasonable price.  Worked with Sam Sugar until 11.30, then a nightcap in the Plankinton Grill, to bed at 130 very tired.
21.  Monday: Temperature is 95° in Milwaukee today.  Breakfast at the hotel.  Then back to buying from the Engleman Co., and Maurie Close from Shulton then over to Yahr Lange for free feed with Mr. and Mrs. Drews Sheboygan Falls.  Then to McClurgs to see Mr. Grace and Dick Lynch.  Then back to Yahr Lange, Bludau is not in, so we attend movie and floor show at the Riverside.  “Sonny Dunham” orchestra is there. Show is very good.  Picture technicolor “White Savage” stars Maria Montez – John Hall.  At 930 to Carl and Margaret Radomskys.  Leona and Anna Drexler are there.  Had a nice visit until midnight.  Call the folks at home while and Carl and Margarets.
22.  Tuesday: Over to YahrLange this morning.  Tommy boy who is all set for a nice big order in the cottage.  We worked all morning.  Had a picture taken with Mr. Tommy Atkins and Dr. Egan, and I don’t know why.  Had another free meal at Yahr L’s with Mr. and Mrs. Powers from Waupun.  This afternoon to Mutual Drug.  John Lange is in Cleveland.  Bought some critical items from them checked out at hotel and started for home.  Stopped at Fond du Lac to see Ed Worm.  Home for supper and worked until 11.30 at the store.
23.  Wednesday: Rose Weisheipl takes a day off.  Cork Weisheipl – Joe Sr. and Donald go fishing at the cottage.  They get too small ones.  Thres and myself visit Margaret Mueller at Mercy Hospital.  She is getting along nicely.  Took Harry Ferry along.  Tonite after work visited at the Weisheipls.  Mrs. Haverty – Marge – Ellen Spellman are there.  The party is in the nature of a farewell to Cork.
24.  Thursday: Cork Weisheipl leaves this afternoon to be back on the job at Kearns Utah.

26.  Saturday: This turns out to be a very hot day, 96° in the shade.
27.  Sunday: To 730 Mass of St. Johns.  Aloys Kinateder and Anna Kinderman are married 16 years today.  Thres moves out to the cottage this afternoon.  We just made it before a storm broke.  I had to be plumber when we got there.  John Soft Sr. has a birthday.  He is 81.

29.  Tuesday: Temperatures are now down to 54° during the day, rising to 64°, quite a change from Saturdays 96°.  Jack Baker of Radio fame on Don Mc Neill’s Breakfast Club has a birthday.  Born June 29 -1908.
30.  Wednesday: I get a new job today. Postmaster of the south side. Well, I really am not a postmaster just the clerk in charge of station No. I Oshkosh, Wis.
