Diary of Alfred E. Potter March, 1943

01.  Monday: [N] Forty Hour Devotion begins at St. Johns.  Had to apply for more gasoline for my Plymouth today.  Coupons “B” are gone.  Speedometer reading 44800 miles.
02.  Tuesday: Temperature is down to eleven degrees below zero this morning. To Kiwanis luncheon Dr. Gifford –Ed Lidvina –George Savage –Bart Heiss at our table.  When discussion by Rev. Douglas Anderson –Rabbi Gruen and Father Scanlon on “What will religion provide in a post war world.” A very interesting subject.  Pipkorn brings us to more tons of Buddy Stoker Coal.
03.  Wednesday: [T] Joe and Annie Weisheipl are over tonite to visit with us.  It is the first time Joe could visit with us since he has his night job.  And I took him to work about 11.45.  It was quite a treat to have Joe with us.

05.  Friday: [N] Mrs. Anton Ilk is at Mercy Hospital.  She has gall trouble.

07.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns, then to work.  Left at 11.45 for St. Nazianz to see Donald.  We took along Mrs. Frank Drexler, Alois Drexler and Mrs. Fred Karst.  The boys are feeling well.  Had a nice visit with them.  On the way had to have the speedometer disconnected on our Chrysler.  Had it done at Chilton.

09.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon.  Took Dave Collin over.  Met a friend of Dave’s –Mr. Moss who sells roofing and commercial paints.
10.  Wednesday: Mrs. Joseph (Anna) Schani passed away this morning at 410 . She had suffered a stroke. Born April 8-1892, married Nov. 25-1913. Survived by Joe and 5 daughters, Joan - Rita - Mrs. Anna Wagner - Marie of Oshkosh, Lucille of Chicago - 5 sons Aloysius - Joseph Jr. - Nolan - Raymond - Sylvester. She used to deliver milk to our house when we lived at 1212 Minnesota St. I got a job for her at Julius Martin grocery when I worked there in 1908. At that time she lived at 544-12th St.
11.  Thursday: Francis Lamb is over to date to get details on our income tax to make out our returns.  Temperature this morning is 13° below zero, this afternoon 33 above a change of 46 degrees.  This is a record for at least the last 10 years.
12.  Friday: Ed Winklebauer who was on the ill-fated “Chicago” when she was sunk by the Japs, was in the store today. He lost all his belongings, was in the water for 1 ½ hours. The water was warm but very uncomfortable on account of the oil on its surface. About 56 men and 6 officers were lost out of 1100 men. Melvin Jansen is also in today. He is stationed at Medford, Oregon.

14.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Vincents with Holy Name Society, then to work.  Or money order business is exceptional.  Had 578 yesterday and today.  Took in $11273.90 Thres comes money tonite for 2 ½ hours, so we can get the report out early.  Fees amount to 70.25           Com.  Stanislaus Jarosch
15.  Monday: Francis Lamb is in this morning to complete our income tax return.  It is a stormy morning turning into a blizzard.  I leave on the 1107 this morning for Chicago.  Martin Knauer is with me to Milwaukee.  Took streamliner from Milwaukee arrived in Chicago at 2.45 P.M.  Drove out to United Drug Company via taxi.  Frank Pa_____ took quite an order for United Wholesalers from me.  Also met August Heinrich.  Fred Wimber Jr. is looking good.  Met a Mr. Cooper at Palmer House Café.  He remembered our firm.  Had introduced Edgeworth tobacco.
16.  Tuesday: Took in the movie “In which we serve” last night at the Roosevelt Theatre on State Street.  Noel Coward is the writer – director and a star in the picture.  This morning met a Mr. Burget with the Gates Rubber Company, Denver Colo. in the Palmer House Coffee Shop.  Out to United Drug Company.  Henry Apida sells me a bill of United Drug Mdse.  The directors of United Wholesale dine at Manufactures Bldg. then back for annual meeting.  I was elected a director.  We topped United Wholesalers blessed in 1942 with         .  Attended movie “Ravaged Earth” at the Grande.  It is about the Jap horrors committed in Shanghai – Nanking and Foo Chow.
17.  Wednesday: [T] Breakfast at the coffee shop, then to Benzinger Brothers.  Met Jim Kitterick there.  Alice Walsh sold me some religious goods, could not get many rosaries.  Then checked out at the Hotel and over to McClurg’s.  Mr. Had introduced Mr. Beaupre who had been with Carson Pieri for years.  Bought quite a bill of goods from him.  Had a fine meal at the Eastgate Hotel on East Ontario St.. then to the depot.  Left on the Pennsylvania 400 at 4 Oclock, home at 730.  Jim Kitterick tells me he has already bought his coffin, thats one I havent heard before.
18.  Thursday: Back on the job this morning.

20.  Saturday: My Plymouth hits 45 000 miles today.  It is a beautiful day.  Took Ed and Thres Fretchel – Annie Weisheipl, Mary Ann and Thres to Oshkosh Theatre.  Jack Benny – Rochester and Priscilla Lane Star in “The Meanest Man in the World.” It is very comical.  Another picture “Chetniks” about the Slovaks fighting German rule featuring Phillip Dorn and Anna Sten.  “Vaudeville Daze” is fun, imitation of a Rio Brothers – Eddie Car – Eva Tanguay –Pat Roomy –The Whirling Camerons.  Alfred Potter furnishes the lunch and refreshments at 703 – 14th St. after the show.
21.  Sunday: To St. Johns 730 Mass and am I sleepy.  To work after mass.  In the afternoon I take a nap.  Thres takes Annie Weisheipl – Emma Siewert –Thres Fretchel to Bingo party at the Opera House.  Thres needs a 5 to win 50 dollars but it was not forthcoming.
22.  Monday: had Norbert – Art Mueller –Joe Baier – Fred Baumgartner over for a meeting at the South Store tonite.
23.  Tuesday: [N] To Kiwanis luncheon. Miss Kane M.D. and psychiatrist with the State Board of Health is the speaker. Our table Dave Collin - Ed Ledvina - Dave Johnson- Ray Baxandall. Food markets are getting enormous business in meats and cheese today. Meat rationing begins on the 29th. Had a letter from Donald today. His locker is empty.
24.  Wednesday: A lovely spring day, temperature up to 50. Looked over James Kinsler's house today. We might buy it if the price is right. To St. Vincents Church service tonite with Mother and Mary Ann. Father Ott speaks on “Anger.” After church sent a package of cookies and goodies to Donald.
25.  Thursday: [T] A lovely day, temperature is up to 55°. Frank and John Miller (sons of Louis Miller, deceased) are here on furlough. Frank says 9 days ago he was in Africa, and here he is home. He states treatment of the boys in Africa is excellent. The natives also are very kind. John was on two boats lost at sea. On one occasion he was in the icy waters for ½ hour.

27.  Saturday: Took Thres and Mary Ann to the “Oshkosh” “Desperados” in Technicolor is a good picture starring Randolph Scott –Glenn Ford – Claire Trevor – Evelyn Keyes.  “It comes up love” features Gloria Jean and Donald O’Connor.  A wholesome comic picture.
28.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns, Mary Ann is with me. Four hundred air corps trainees arrived early this morning from various parts of the country to take up training at the teachers college. Dr. Ray Wagner is a busy man taking care of many of them. Money orders are coming in heavy for auto licenses.
29.  Monday: Father Bastian makes sick calls as usual, also to Anna Drexler.  Meat – Cheese – Lard – Shortenings – Butter are on the ration block today.  What next?
30.  Tuesday: [N] Anna Drexler's house is sold today by Elsie Broche. Anna says she could laugh and cry as fond memories come to her. Delivered to her a gallon of Mineral Oil which I think will be the last while she is in Oshkosh. Intends to move to Milwaukee with Margaret and I suppose part time with Leona. This may not be the first day of spring on the calendar, but in reality it is. Temperature is up to 76° and a nice warm breeze a blowing. I have a lovely disfigured face today, puffed eyes, swollen cheeks, do not know the cause. Did not get to Kiwanis luncheon.
31.  Wednesday: Another warm day, temperature up to 77° when I get home this noon.  Visited with the Heips tonite after church.  Had a few games of cards.  I took Joe to work at 11.45 P.M.  His shift is from 12 midnight to 8 A.M.  They gave us a nice photo of them and Cork is playing with.  Temperature dropped plenty by tonite, it is 39° at midnight, a drop of 38° since noon.
