01. Sunday: “Happy New Year” We have ours in front
of the Bismarck. Quite a lot of noise
and commotion. Not as much as I expected. I’m out for a walk at 130
AM. Temperature is 48°. Our room seemed like 100°. Up at 1000 getting ready to
go to church. Tried St. Mary’s ended up
at the Capuchin Church (Franciscan) at Clark and Polk Sts. Forgot we had breakfast at the coffee shop at
the Hotel. For gin rummy went to “A Bit
of Sweden” 1015 Rush Street. Its a Smorgasbord
first and then a dinner. Don’t know
where I put it all the got away with it.
Ella Worm is in high spirits, and I’m almost there. After dinner to the “Shubert Theatre to see “Kiss
me Kate” Keith Andes – Anne Jeffreys, Mark Platt – Julius Wilson – Benny Baker –
Bobby Vail have leading parts. It was a
good show altho I’ve seen better. After
midnight another walk and snack at Anne’s Restaurant W. Randolph St.
02. Monday: [T] Had a long rest this A.M. until 10
Oclock. Had breakfast in Norm Brown’s
room. About 2 P.M. we have dinner at
Henrici’s and the service was elegant.
We then check out and at 415 we are ready to leave for
home, and I’m almost knocked out trying to make the train, we did however get a
seat, only 1100 on the train and more bid on as we go north. Home at 745 and after a
snack, to the store, got statements checked and everything is O.K.
03. Tuesday: Back to the store and plenty of work
awaiting me. Worked until 1130
making out orders. Emma Siewert is over
for the afternoon, has supper with us and in the evening she and Thres attend
Ladies Auxiliary meeting.
04. Wednesday: The new year is finally bringing
out sunshine and it turns out to be a nice day with the temperature going down.
05. Thursday: Will I’ve had a bad night, stomach
flu has been getting all of us at the house and I’m the last one to have it and
also a little worse. Took Mary Ann to Manda’s
to stay for the day, and then I’m back home for the day, mostly in bed. Temperatures are 5° below this morning.

08. Sunday: To 730 Mass with St.
Vincents Holy Name. Monsignor Bastian
Worked at the store 3 ½ hours this morning.
Visited at Walter Lennox this afternoon.
Also took a trip to Riverside Cemetery.
Weather is lovely, temperature close to 40°. Worked 4 hours on income tax for employees
tonight. Mary Ann has company Dolores Heisler
–Joan Mauritz and Rose Sosnoski.

10. Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon. We have the installation of officers by Boyd
Jordan. Carl Schmidt is our new
president. Bob Bork is Vice President. This evening am busy until 1120
working on the books. Put in 12 hours
today.
11. Wednesday: Am busy at home making out W 2’s
for our employees. Typewriter goes on
the fritz and Rose Weisheipl had to come in and fix it. Joe brought her in, he tells me he has
stomach flu, I oblige with two good sized schnapps, that should help. We have a new phone installed at the house
and it sure is an improvement, thanks to our friend Pederson. Worked 10 hours and then out to Uncle Joe’s
with the Fretschl’s for sheephead. I win
85¢. Home at 130.
12. Thursday: A mild day with mist and just enough
freeze to make riding hazardous. Mary
Ann is at Dr. Wares for checkup (Dental), and then she spends the day at Matt
Drexlers. Im busy with orders until 10 P.M.
about 20 of them. Worked 10 ½ hours. C.R. Meyers clean up back of the store and
house today. Ray Novotny, Postmaster is
over to inspect our new postal station.

14. Saturday: Worked all day in the new basement
at the store. Another bandaging for
Thres today. Tonite we are at Ed and
Rose Binder’s, also there are Les and Mary Borish – Ed and Dess Wirtz. Learn to play Oklahoma cost 50¢ to learn. Rose furnishes a fine lunch we are home at 230
AM. Joan Mauritz is with Mary Ann this
evening and overnight guest
15. Sunday: [T] To 9 Oclock Mass St. Vincents
Father Wagner. To work in 10 A.M. We begin moving the prescription department
to the new store. Bob Kniss – Ed Huntz –Norm
Brown –Norbert Mueller – Art Hazen give us a lift. Joan Mauritz is with us for dinner. This aft the girls see “The Inspector General”
Danny Kaye. Temperatures 39° this
afternoon. To Fiss & Bills tonight
to attend Rosary for Bill Glidden.
16. Monday: Temperature down to 2° below. Our Rx Dept. at the house looks pretty sick
today, and the house is cold, to top it off.
Worked in the basement part time.
To K.C. Fourth Section meeting at Al Shenars this evening. Very interesting. Our table Matt Mertz –Ed Binder – Al Potter.
17. Tuesday: We get
a surprise today. We become grandpa and grandma. A 7 pound 11 oz
baby girl is born to Arlene and Donald. I do some of my work at home. K C’s have their hard time party – Kiwanis
celebrate 35th anniversary at the Congressional Church, we miss both
events. Leave for Milwaukee at 530
in at 715 had eats at Belmont Hotel then to Auditorium for “Holiday
on Ice.” Enjoyed it very much. Eleven forty train leaves at 1 A.M. we are
home at 330 A.M. My
car left at the depot is almost froze up, but I got it started. Met Walter and Adeline Seelmacher in
Milwaukee at the railroad station. Took
them home in our car. After some lunch
we go to bed at 5 A.M.
18. Wednesday: I’m staying in bed until 10 A.M. Its almost 5° or 6° below zero this morning
19. Thursday: Robert Brand & Sons begin work
at my office, and its high time, and very anxious to see this job completed.
20. Friday: [T] Am having Plymouth checked and
washed which calls for a change of weather, and sure enough it snows most of
the day.
21. Saturday: I'm
busy getting the Hospital and First Aid Section in the basement in the store in
shape. Donald takes Arlene and the baby home from the hospital at 10
A.M. Robert Voelz is in to say hello. He operates a pharmacy in
Tomahawk.
22. Sunday: To Berlin with 4th Degree K.C. to 8 Oclock
Mass at St. Joseph’s Church. Gilbert Pitz
the chauffeur for Ed Binder –Herman Youngwirth and me. Breakfast at Whiting Hotel. John Fitzgerald, speaker. Met Harry and Agnes Kujawa at the breakfast. Home at 1145 A.M. This afternoon to Felkers to see the baby girl. She sure has a lot of hair looks like more
than I ever had. This evening to
Auditors meeting at Monsign. Bastians.

23. Monday: Norm Brown comes to the house to take
his order. Snow and cold are in the air
this morning. This evening to Annual
Meeting of the Apostolate. Speakers Mons.
Bastian – Father Spaulding –Judge Sam Lucksinger. Sam spoke one hour and five minutes. Father McCarthy
was to speak also, could not come because of illness. Boyd Jordan was there, think he’s head of the
community chest.
24. Tuesday: Attend Kiwanis luncheon. Gene Vogel – Eric Baller –Henry Kuettner and
me at table. Dick Rutledge is honored as
the outstanding young man by the J.C.C.
Steve Wittman was our speaker and very interesting. Had quite a bit of rain today. After Perpetual Help Devotion we visit with
Father Dave Bunkleman. Had a very
enjoyable evening. Home at 115
A.M.
25. Wednesday: [T] A fire last night at 124
Jefferson Ave. cost Cy Crook his life and Rosalind Hartske, society editor at
the Daily Northwestern was severely burned.
Chief Leo Girens thinks a cigaret on the sofa in Miss Hartske’s
apartment was the cause of the fire.
This is what I call an all weather date, we have had rain – sleet – snow
– lightning with heavy thunder and sunshine, what more do we want
26. Thursday: Winter is back in full force 10°
below, sticks around zero most of the day.
This morning Mary Ann is out to Mandy Drexlers for the day. This evening we see the “Viennese Ballet
Ensemble” at the Oshkosh Theatre. It is
very well received by an enthusiastic audience.
Paid last respects to Hattie Fleming at Spikes McDonalds.
27. Friday: Weather is moderating it is zero this
morning and I have another flat tire, the second in a week. Am told by Andy Mauritz to change inner tubes
on all tires.

29. Sunday: To 7:30
Mass St. Vincents Monsignor Bastian. After Mass busy with orders and trade
at the store. Donald's little girl is baptized today by Father
Wagner. Sponsors Joe Baier and Bernice _______. We are at
Felker's for dinner. I complete orders at home while the folks play
sheephead at Felkers. Forgot to mention the little girls name is Deborah
Ann.

30. Monday: What a cold night 15° below zero. Norm Brown is here to take in order and
incidentally also to have breakfast with me.
Thres is very obliging this morning.
Father Dave Bunkleman also stops at our house this morning for short
visit.
31. Tuesday: To Kiwanis Club luncheon had Sonny Peck
and Harvey Lohst as my guests. Ordered
office desk – chair – filing cabinet – telephone stand – waste basket from Vic
Fink. Had new inner tubes put in the
tires of my Plymouth car. Am tired of
flats. Had another this morning, thats
three within a week. Took in Judy
Stillman Review at the Oshkosh tonite.
Its a benefit for the Polio Fund.
A full house greeted the dancers.
