Diary of Alfred E. Potter November, 1950

01.  Wednesday: To 630 Mass.  Weather is still warm about 60 this morning 74 at noon changes toward evening.  Mary Ann to see Aunt Mary.  After that to Leaths with mother to look at chairs for a living room.  Weather changes toward evening, 39 at 11 P.M.
02.  Thursday: To Mass at 630 stayed for 2.  Made several visits, then to work.  This afternoon to see Aunt Mary –Leo Wolf – Mrs. Abram.  Leo has a lunch of beer – sandwiches and a can of anchovies.  Visited with Sister Kunigunda, made visits in chapel.  Ken Seperski is in town.  Fred Loretta Baumgartner –Art Margaret Mueller to Elo Grange for Old fashioned supper, took Ken along.  We have company tonite.  Matt – Amanda Drexler and Joey and Johnnie – Joe – Celia Drexler.  Harry Kujawa with Agnes – John and Mary come in at 10 Oclock.  Hadn’t seen them since we are back from Europe.
03.  Friday: To 700 oclock Mass Monsignor Bastian.  We are at St. Vincents Hall tonite to see the movie “Christ the King”.  Movie of our trip to Europe is shown also, Dr. Ray Wagner was narrator.  The hall was well filled with an appreciative audience.  When we arrive home at 10.45 Matt Drexler phoned that Leo Wolf passed away at 605 this evening.  Little did I think when I visited him yesterday that he would pass today.  He wanted so badly to be home by Thanksgiving.

04.  Saturday: Well I’m here for another birthday.  Have completed 60 years.  Cards are coming in.  Got some very nice ones.  One from the folks at the South Store signed by all of the employees, another from Norm Brown with signatures from druggists Neenah – Appleton – Fond du Lac – Oshkosh.  This afternoon put on storm windows at the cottage.  This evening took the folks for dinner at the Roxy, that is Donald – Arlene –Joe – Annie Weisheipl – Ed – Thres Fretschl, then a pleasant surprise Marty Knauer –Marty Unmuth wish me a happy birthday, they were also at the Roxy.  Took the folks to the Oshkosh after the dinner.  “Toast of New Orleans in color with Mario Lanza and Kathryn Grayson very good.

05.  Sunday: To 730 Mass.  Father Koehn.  Work the rest of the morning.  Took Mary Ann to see Aunt Mary this afternoon.  Attended Rosary for Leo Wolf at Sitters.  Matt John – Larry and Raymond Wolf brothers of Leo.  They are in the advertising business in OKlahoma City.  Had quite a visit with them.  Also a visit with Ray Siewert about Otto and Emma
06.  Monday: Attended funeral services for Leo Wolf at 900 Oclock at Sacred Heart.  Father Bunkleman offers the Mass.  It’s a very breezy day today.  Norm Brown stops in at the house at 11.15 A.M. and has noon meal with us, chicken – smoked butt – dumplings, ice cream etc.  Showed him the snapshots I took on our trip.
07.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon.  Clarence (Wally) Bronson spoke for the Board of Education.  His talk was interesting and to the point.  I brought my birthday prize, Frank Uder won it.  Tonite Donald and me are at Dr. Ray Wagners to check on the films and delete the parts that are not too good.  Mailed a package to Resi Kroll Rothbauer in Oberpfalz Parsberg.
08.  Wednesday: Ray Trovinger is in today.  James Watson gives an interesting refresher talk at the Raulf tonight, sponsored by the Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce.  Dinner was served at 6 P.M.  I took Sy Propson – Jean Powers –Lauretta Kargus – Virginia Abrams – Adeline Schmidt – Carol Follez.
09.  Thursday: Mailed another package to the Rothbauers.  Father Alphonse Wagner is in today, but a little late for lunch.  He does however sample one of our homemade Martinis.

11.  Saturday: Took DE Soto over to have it winterized at Beck Motors.  This afternoon delivered "Pope Blessings to Anna Drexler (Mrs. John), to Tony and Jennie Pable; also delivered Lourdes Water to them and to Ray Ostertags and Bill Mauritz.  Ann Ostertag seems to be suffering from sinus trouble.  Took Bill to the cottage to pick up paint and brushes.  Stopped at Wilbur Muellers.  Tonite Thres and Mary Ann to the Strand to see “Devils Doorway” starring Robert Taylor –Paula Raymond also Tom Conway in “The Great Plane Robbery.” I stayed at home.
12.  Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass with Holy Name Society.  Reception of new members takes place at the service and older members renew their holy name pledge.  Work balance of morning and part time this afternoon.  Tonite the Weisheipls and Fretschl’s are over.  The usual card game with birthday song and lunch after 12 oclock.  Cork Weisheipl picks them up after one, they really leave at 145 A.M.

13.  Monday: Ma Potters birthday, not very eventful.  She has completed 64 years and all set for more punishment.  She played cards this afternoon at Mary Fenzel’s 1141-10 Street, wins 3d prize.  Dess Wertz brought a gardenia for her from Milwaukee.  Dess has a birthday today also, she is 45.  Thres and Mary Ann attend concert at the Presbyterian Church by the noted cellist “Ennio Bolognini.”
14.  Tuesday: [T] To Kiwanis luncheon.  Joe Drasal – Carl Knobla and Frank Fraker at table with me.  Mother and Annie Heip visit Aunt Mary.  Mrs. Lottie Schalkenbach widow of Joseph Schalkenbach and mother of Jessie (Mrs. Fred) Smith passed away at Mercy Hospital this afternoon at 415.  She was 82 years of age.  We are going to miss her comic wit around the store, at least I will not be called any more names all in fun.  Served as honor guard, 4th Degree K of C at St. Josaphats.  Took Monsignor Bastian to church and also back.
15.  Wednesday: Cloudy but warm today.  Completed putting on storm windows upstairs this afternoon.  Donald was here to help.  Mother takes care of Debby for the evening.  Arlene brings over half a loaf of wheat bread.  Its her first try at baking break and she's done a good job.  We also viewed the remains of Lottie Schalkenbach and also Mrs.
16.  Thursday: [T] The Heips are getting all linoleum floor in their dining room.  Should made quite an improvement.  This evening we attend the play “Two Blind Mice” at the Opera House.  It is well rendered by the Oshkosh Community Players.  Agnes (Mrs. Ed) Steckbauer dropped in at the south store this afternoon.  She is now Mrs. Siegl, married last Saturday.  This summer she had visited Edward in Montana also Teddy in Texas.  Teddy is now married, he is with the air force, Edward is a geologist.  Mark is in the novitiate at St. Nazianz.  Jane is in Oshkosh, works at the Diamond.

18.  Saturday: Mailed another package to Germany 1.82 Postage.  This is package #3 in 2 weeks.  This afternoon took a drive to the cottage, find things OK, then to Riverside Cemetery, looked up Carl Sherri’s resting place.  Then to Otto’s Hi K for a delicious tenderloin steak dinner and then to the Strand Theatre.
19.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Vincents Father Koehn, Lady Foresters Communion Sunday.  Arlene attends with Mother and Mary Ann. Donald is with me at the service.  Father Koehn explains the meaning of indulgences.  Worked this morning and this evening until eight.  Then to Fretschl's for cards.  Mama won 85 cents. I lost 25 cents.  Annie Heip did not win a game.

20.  Monday: [T] Mother is busy cleaning house.  Norm Brown took Bob Kniss and me to luncheon at the Town Grill.  The winterizing job on my DE Soto is completed today.  Willis MacDonald 274 Parkway, died of a heart attack this morning after he shot a buck deer near Clearwater Lake in the Eagle River area.  Today would have been his 58th birthday.  Born in Lisbon N.D. Nov. 21 – 1892.
21.  Tuesday: Leave for Milwaukee at 820.  Stopped at Mutual Drug, by the way they now have a new name “Badger Wholesale Drug Company.” John Lange tells me he’ll be in Oshkosh with Guy Jensens for Thanksgiving.  Then to McClurgs, looks like a morgue there, stock is very much depleted.  Had luncheon at Maders, then to Usingers for sausages and Wisconsin Cheese Mart, then to Broadway Church goods, Alex waited on us as usual; left for home at 500 after picking up order at Mutual, home at 700 P.M.
22.  Wednesday: Called Elsie Wagner in regard to tickets for Apostolate.  She is not on committee this time.  Got my working clothes on today, am in the cellar trying to get stock in order.  Gale Unser passed away suddenly this morning at 730 at 703 Main St.  Born June 16 – 1908 at Eau Galle Wis.  Survived by Mrs., three daughters, four sons.  Gale was responsible for me joining the Oshkosh Power Boat Club.
23.  Thursday: A cool day with snow temperature 12 above when we leave for church at 745.  Then to work, stores are open until noon.  Don – Arlene –and Debby are with us for dinner.  Temperature is down to 7° above this noon, tonite 4° below zero.  Took them all to the Oshkosh tonite to see “I’ll get By” with June Haver – William Lundigan – Gloria de Haven – Dennis Day –Harry James also “The Golden Gloves Story” with James Dunn.  Then to Fiss & Bills to view the remains of Florence Hough.  She was in Aunt Mary’s Room 207.

24.  Friday: Temperature 8° below zero this morning.
25.  Saturday: Eastern States are in the grip of severe winter storms.  According to the radio announcements Pittsburgh has 22 inches of snow.  Hurricane winds
26.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Josaphats Church with Foresters.  Worked balance of morning and from 3.30 to 930 writing orders.  We are blessed with and all day’s fall of snow.  Emma Siewert and Otto Lemke are invited to Kaukauna for a venison dinner, but changed their mind and spend the evening at our house.  Dr. Bill Wagner has quite a time trying to get a 16 mm Type A film.  I had no luck trying to get one.

27.  Monday: I’m back in the basement of the store getting the shelves of merchandise in order for the holiday business.  Thres plays cards at Lehnighs today.  Tonite we attend the Oshkosh Apostolate dinner at St. Vincents Hall.  Over 200 attended.  Guests Mayor Siewert – Chief of Police William Golz – Judges Sam Lucksinger –Helmuth Arps – Supreme Justice Henry Hughes –Boyd Jordan, Fathers Scanlon – McCarthy.
28.  Tuesday: Attended Kiwanis luncheon had Ken Seperski as guest.  John Reynolds of the Wis. Taxpayers Alliance present in a very interesting talk.  Many guests from Rotary – Chamber of Commerce – So. Side Business Men are present.  Franklin Ruehlke Jr. was also a guest.  I had a visit with him and also John Reynolds after the luncheon.  Tonite our semi annual Rexall Meeting at the Town Grill.  Al Leonard shows some interesting slides on salesmanship.  Party breaks up at 1.15 A.M.
29.   Wednesday: I’m back in the basement.  South Side Merchants have their stores open for a preview of Christmas gifts this evening.  Santa Claus distributes gifts to the children.
30.  Thursday: Took Mary Ann to Amanda’s.  She gets a Nutri Tonic Permanent.  Both Manda and Celia work on her
