Diary of Alfred E. Potter March, 1949

01.  Tuesday: Had to miss Kiwanis luncheon today.
02.  Wednesday: Lent begins today and Mary Ann and Myself attend evening service at St. Vincents.  Ed Labudde’s wife Maude is operated for gall stones.
03.  Thursday: Home most of the day still figuring inventory.  This evening to the Civic Theatre.  Oshkosh Committee Players stage “What Every Woman Knows.” A fine cast in a good play.  Even “Bill Harford” the old veteran takes an active part.  Had Emma and Mame Siewert with us.  Emma was here for dinner.
04.  Friday: [T] To 8 Oclock Mass with Thres St. Vincents.  Father Loehr.  I had never been to children’s mass on First Friday
05.  Saturday: Francis Lamb is in this morning, begins working on our income tax.  He is with us until 515 P.M.  Took Thres and Mary Ann to the “New Time Theatre.” They have doubled their floor space and added a balcony.  “Adventures of Gallant Bess” the wonder horse in Cinecolor stars Cameron Mitchell – Audrey Long –Fuzzy Knight.  “An Old Fashioned Girl” stars Gloria Jean – Jimmy Lydon –John Hubbard Frances Rafferty –Saundra Berkova.  Stopped at Fritz Weisheipl’s on the way home for a club steak sandwich.
06.  Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass St. Vincents, Father Loehr has his farewell today.  Mary Ann has Joan Mauritz and Doris Heisler here for dinner and takes them to the Strand as a birthday treat.  This evening Mary Ann and Thres are at Father Loehr’s farewell party at St. Vincents while I work until 10 P.M.  Al Rohrbeck an old neighbor of ours when we lived on Ohio Street is found dead in Emmanuel Ev. Church by Mrs. Becker (wife of Reverend) this afternoon.  He was doing janitor work, and the folks at home missed him when he did not return.
07.  Monday: [T] Viewed the remains of Phil Stocum and this morning.  Bill was a good friend of the Mueller family.  He passed away Friday night of a stroke.  Born Oct. 20 – 1884.  Married Olga Puestow Dec. 7 – 1909.  This is Mary Ann’s birthday.  She is 19.  Nothing of importance occurred, altho we did have Emma Siewert here for dinner and Mother and Emm took Mary Ann along to the meeting of the Ladies Society St. Vincents.  Kathe Mueller is 10 today.  Thres is quite upset late tonite.
08.  Tuesday: Clark Hastings is in town.  Worked at home this morning then to Kiwanis luncheon.  Pat Hurlbutt accompanied by Gordis Schmidt sang for us.  Thres Mary Ann and self to Lenten and Mother of Perpetual Help Service and Devotion tonite.  Then to Konrad’s to view the remains of Al Rohrbeck.  Then back to the store for work.  After work completed figuring inventories for the three stores.  Sister Amelia (Mercy Hosp.) tells me she is leaving for retreat.  She asks to be remembered.
09.  Wednesday: [10   T] A very busy worked in the basement all day, and get out the mail orders tonight.  Eddie Weisheipl is laid up with a cold.  Temperature is down, about 15° tonight.  Rudy Haveman President South Side Business Mens Club is in to visit with me tonite.  He tells me his partner Herb Nolte is not improved very much from his recent illness.
10.  Thursday: Father Loehr leaves for his new appointment as pastor at Suring.
11.  Friday: Father Alphonse Wagner brings in Father Bouche our new assistant for an introduction.
12.  Saturday: We have company this evening.  Harry Kujawa family are here and we take them to the All Star –Anderson Basketball Game.  We lose in overtime 74-67.  Our boys played wonderful ball especially Hawkins –Hannum –Burmaster.  Too bad the three went out on 5 Fouls.  After the game the folks are with us until midnight.  Agnes brings a birthday cake for Mary Ann.  Took Aunt Mary to confession St. Vincents.
13.  Sunday: Thres is at St. Josaphat’s Church for the Catholic Council’s Day of Recollection.  Father Hubert Kleiber conducts the afternoon service.  Joe Weisheipl and Charles Schuster at the organ.  I attend St. Vincents where the city Holy Name receive Holy Communion in a body.  About 600 men are present.  Aunt Mary could not attend Mass today, her stomach is bad.  Fred and Loretta Baumgartner to Milwaukee to attend Rexall Convention.

15.  Tuesday: Francis Lamb completes our income tax reports.  We are very glad thats over with.
16.  Wednesday: Got an invitation from Ed Binder to play cards at his place tonight.  Drs. William and Ray Wagner and Father Alphonse Wagner are there also.  Its my first experience where 5 men play three handed sheephead.  I won 80 cents.
17.  Thursday: [T] Donald drives to Milwaukee with Eddie Weisheipl to attend the Rexall Sales People Convention.  Cy and Mrs. Propson also attend.
18.  Friday: Donald is back on the job this noon.
19.  Saturday: Mother and me to 645 Mass St. Vincents, then to work.  This afternoon took Donald to Fond du Lac for a look at Larsons Photo Shop.  We get quite a demonstration of Ampro Movie Machines by Edw. Frederick.  Met Lyle Runke in Navy Uniform.  He is still at Great Lakes Naval Station.  Visited at Dana Worms Drug Store.  Ed and Fred are on the job.  Worked until 10.30 this evening.  Mary Ann spends the afternoon and evening at Matt Drexlers.

20.  Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass.  Father Wagner St. Vincents. Reports for 1948 are out today.  Mama attends St. Vincents Card Party this afternoon.  Plays charity and gets quite a few prizes.  Aunt Annie Heip and Thres Fretschl are with her.  Visited at Bill Mauritz this afternoon with Mary Ann.  Rose has been laid up with since March the first.

22.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon Bob Bork and I share table.  We are entertained by Hi School music students Sue Rusk – Anita Boese – Barbara Brandt – Dale Stephan – Dolf Pfefferkorn –Dick Verduin.  This evening to Stations and Mother of Perpetual Help devotion with Thres.
23.  Wednesday: Taking out “St. Joseph’s Union” annual for Aunt Mary.  Visited at Mrs. Johanna Lang’s – John Barth – Anton Paulick.  Had quite a visit with Bill and Mary Haidlinger.

26.  Saturday: Took a drive to Berlin this morning with Mary Ann.  Had some business with Harry.  Visited Agnes and the children.  Mary is recovering from the flu.  This evening took Thres and Mary Ann to the Time.  Two very good pictures “Silver River” Starring Ann Sheridan – Errol Flynn – Thomas Mitchell and one we saw some time ago “Angels Alley ” with Leo Gorcey & Bowery Boys.
27.  Sunday: [T] To 730 Mass St. Vincents.  Father Boushe.  Thres and Mary Ann with Lady Foresters.  Worked this morning.  This afternoon invited to look over Ed and Dess Wurtz’s new restaurant.  It is outstanding.  Bill and Mrs. Rasmussen are there also.  This evening to St. Vincents to see “Dipsy Doodle Time” by St. Peters Choir.  Its a Minstrel assisted by some of St. Vincents Male Choirs.  Its a Gloom Killer.  It was written and directed by Bob Kriz.

28.  Monday: Ed Dietze, the Salisbury representative calls a meeting at the South Store tonight to give us some hi lights on how to sell poultry remedies.  He also explains the different kinds of poultry diseases.  Robert Gustavus 20 and Donald Kloetzke 19 killed this morning as Gustavus car sideswiped a tree at 1333 –9th St. when taking Kloetzke home from a downtown restaurant.  Gustavus was the drummer for Joe Weisheipl’s band at Club 41.  Thres entertains Pat and Mrs. Baranowski – Mrs. Cater tonite.
29.  Tuesday: [T] To Kiwanis luncheon Dr. Behnke, Dr. Graeber, Sid Mertz, Herb Kummerow and myself make up the table. No Program today. Clem Luck has me take a case of ball gum. If we can sell it, it will help Kiwanis boys and girls welfare fund. To Stations and Perpetual Help Devotion this evening then to Sitters to see Charles Zarter then to Marquardts to see Bob Gustavus.

30.  Wednesday: Charles Zarter is laid to rest.  Monsignor Bastian has the service.  Pallbearers Matt Mertz – Bill Steckbauer – Matt Marheine –Joe Koplitz –John Mateyka and myself.  Used my car for the bearers.  This evening at 10 oclock we have our Rexall meeting in the Continental Room Athearn.  Al Leonard conducts the meeting.  Fred Worm bring seven of their folks in a station wagon from Fond du Lac.  Dorothy Worm is in good spirits.  Today is Ken Ziperski’s birthday, he is 57.  He was not able to be here.
31.  Thursday: [T] The Ladies Auxiliary South Side Business Men are entertained by Dess Wirtz tonite at their new restaurant.  The ladies are treated royally with food etc.  Thres wins 40¢ at cards.
