01. Tuesday: [MH 9 M] Attended 8 Oclock Mass with
Thres and Mary Ann. Took Lucille Mertz
home, she tells us George had been in the hospital with a broken rib, caused by
severe coughing spells. Attended Kiwanis
luncheon. Winners of the Good Sportsmanship
Trophy are guests, South Park Jr. Hi, also Bob Kolf and his S.T.C. team. Art Mansfield, baseball coach at Madison is
the speaker and a good story teller. To
church service tonite Father Schorn’s Sermon, Seek ye the Kingdom of Heaven.

02. Wednesday: We
attend the concert of the “Detroit Symphony Orchestra,” Paul Paray
directing, at the South Park School Gym. I enjoyed Beethoven's Symphony No. 7
in A Major. It took 35 minutes to play it. After the performance Mary Ann and I
to Lowell Robbins to the Mueller Potter sales meeting conducted by Gale
Robertson. Gale gave the folks some pointers on the Spring Work Bench Drive. We
are back home at midnight, the folks stay until 1 A.M.

04. Friday: [Bob Kniss birthday R 4 M] To St.
Vincents at 7 A.M. Mary Ann goes to work in spite of not feeling too well. Its
rather cold, damp, and cloudy today. Took Thres and Mary Ann to Columbus
Club for shrimp and lobster tail. Met George & Lavine Haverty, Clarence
& Florence Westphal, Anna Ostertag, George and Mrs. Procknow, Dan &
Mrs. Hildebrand. Learned that Ann Ostertag had a hemorrhage last Saturday, lost
considerable blood. So we take a drive tonite to see Ray and family. Ann is
sitting up looking quite pale, must have X Rays taken. Home at 10:30.

05. Saturday: Bernard Kelly has a birthday, he is
53.
06. Sunday: Day of Recollection for Council of
Catholic Women at St. Josaphats, took Thres – Annie Heip and Mrs. Bischoff there
for 8 Oclock Mass. I attended 730
at St. Vincents. This afternoon to St.
John’s 2 Oclock Lenten Devotion, then to Museum to see the Philatelic Display
there. Phil Jackish works there in spare
time, earns pretty near 20 dollars per week.
Mary Ann is with me, not too much interested. Mr. Hamilton showed us around. Ed Kemp and wife Ruth were interested very
much. Mary Ann then visits with Mary Zentner.

07. Monday: Mary Ann has completed 25 years of
life today and is ready to begin the next 25.
There are no formal festivities.
Donald and family and Joanne Mauritz are over for the evening. Father Murphy is operated for “rupture” at
New London Community Hospital.
08. Tuesday: [M 9 M] This is a rather busy day for
me. Joe Stadtmueller is in to take more
plans for S.S.B.M. Program. Walter Goltz
1316 So. Main is in to see about getting Ted Freiburg’s job at the cemetery. James Egan Milwaukee and James Maher Stoughton Mass. are in about invalid chairs
and sickroom supplies department in drugstores.
I took them to Kiwanis as my luncheon guests and after luncheon took
them out to see the “Hoyer Invalid Lift” They were very much interested. Francis Lamb was in to get more details on our
income tax return. He was also a
pallbearer for Glenn Converse, an old time “Paine Lumber Co.” employee, laid to
rest at Ellenwood cemetery. Father and sons banquet at K.C. this evening, ages 2
to 14. Don and I took Donnie Jr., quite an event for him. Eddie Weisheipl
brought Bobbie and Tommy.

13. Sunday: [5 hours] Forty Hours Devotion begins
at St. Vincents. Father Andrew from Mt Calvary
is here to deliver the Sermons. To Holy
Name Prayer Hour 6 to 7 P.M. then home to pick up Thres for Evening Devotion. Spent about 3 ½ hours in church today. Auburn Phelps, our across the street neighbor,
has a new car, a Studebaker, it doesn’t look exactly new, but a lot better than
their old one. Evening service at 40 Hours
very well attended.

14. Monday: [Albert Einstein 76 today R 4 M Donald takes over as buyer for M.P.D. Co.] To 645
Mass. Father Umhoefer, Jesuit, has the Mass. A professor from Marquette Father
Dachauer was a classmate. The Holy Mass is offered at the St. Mary's
side altar. Maynard Stroschein is taken
to Winnebago State Hospital for treatment.
A short time there may give him on new slant on life. I was under the impression he was getting
along fine at home. Matt Mertz is in
today buying a birthday card for Ed Ostertag.
Ed will be 90 tomorrow. Took in
the 40 Hour Service this evening.

15. Tuesday: [Matt Mertz 88 today. M 9 M] To 645 Mass. Father Umhoefer. Called Vern Peroutky to get his version of
our Farmers Program for next Monday, he is satisfied everything is going well. Matt Mertz told me yesterday, he’s turned
over his cottage to Nick Pitz. Nick has
improved considerably. The Mertz family
celebrated Matt’s birthday at the cottage Sunday. Ray was up from Milwaukee.
16. Wednesday: Received a card from Paul Wertch
from Boynton Beach Florida. Thres and I take
a drive this afternoon, stopped in Berlin at Harry’s Bank find he’s gone to
Madison to fight Branch Banking. Stopped
at his home, house is open, but nobody there.
Then took a drive to Appleton to see the new “Shopping Center.” Not much
impressed with Walgreen’s Store. Still
quite a number of vacancies in the place.
Krambo’s are the only place real busy.
17. Thursday: [New Country Sedan today] Saw a nice St. Patrick presentation on television this
afternoon sponsored by the League of Prayer who advocated the
daily recitation of the Holy Rosary in every family. We got a new
"Country Sedan Ford Station Wagon today. Of course Donald will drive it
most of the time, and I hope he gets good use out of it. Ann Ostertag had some
prescriptions filled. She has taken a number of tests and they show no signs of
cancer. Mrs. Louis Zernzach 720 – 15th
died 5.45 A.M. at home. Born in Austria
Nov. 6 – 1883.
18. Friday: Father Victor Kandy is 62 today.
19. Saturday: Mrs. Louis Zernzach is laid to rest. Funeral Service at 9 A.M. St. Vincents
20. Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass –
Father Milbauer, Lady and Men Foresters to Communion in a body. Ladies have a very large turnout. To Stations this afternoon. Don and family with Mary Ann to take a drive
to Berlin, visit Harry and Agnes.
21. Monday: Norm Brown is with us this noon. Extra good pork roast was mothers treat. Laton M. Henderson, our speaker for this
evenings Farm Program arrived this afternoon from New Richmond. Driving was bad. News casts predict bad weather for tonite. I took Mr. Henderson and Joe Stadtmueller to “Town
Grill” for dinner, and then to show him our North Store. It is already misting out, had about 250 at
the South Park Gym for the program, good music by Ralph Beckers group and also the
barbershoppers did good singing. When we
went home a blizzard had started. Vern
Peroutky – Floyd Miller – Dale Tripp attended our meeting.
22. Tuesday: We are snowbound this morning, it had
been snowing and blowing all night looks like 10 or 12 inches on the level. I only delivered mail to the store, staid
home Art Mueller did not come in. Learn
this afternoon our good friend of Father Irvin Umhoefer from the Jesuit
Novitiate collapsed and died at the door of the Novitiate, returned from saying
Mass at St. Johns.
23. Wednesday: Well the city is gradually digging
itself out of the snow. A nice warm day –
temperature about 40, snow melting fast.
Attended Kiwanis luncheon at Appleton (Conway Hotel) (Herb Ainsworth
District Governor) spoke. Attended
Rosary for Father Umhoefer at Fiss and Bills tonite. Father Schorn led the young men and girls for
one rosary and the Novitiate Students lead in another. About 40 novitiates are present in a number
of K.C. Mary Ann has quite a time kidding
with one of the Jesuit Brothers she knows.
24. Thursday: Thres gets a permanent today. Visited Sister Irene this afternoon,
presented her with 25 rosaries and 100 Immaculate Conception Medals. Also
visited Sister Laurentina she is troubled with Bursitis, she is confined in the
little room back of the Mercy Hospital Chapel, also dropped in on Mame Klemmer,
it will be 6 weeks Friday she is at the hospital. Tonite meeting at Father Schorn’s in regard
to Memorial for Mons. Bastian. Dess Wirtz
– Ed Binder – Joe Seibold and myself.
25. Friday: Winds are cold and raw today. Clark Hastings and Florian Peck (Abbott Labs)
are in to say Hello at my office yesterday afternoon. Both looking very good. Attended opening of New Hospital in Appleton.
26. Saturday: Took Mary Ann and Joan Mauritz to Bus
Depot this morning. They intend to spend
the day in Madison.
27. Sunday: Columbus Knights receive Easter
Corporate Communion at St. Vincents, over 500 Knights are there and over 500 at
the breakfast. Brother Alan vocational
director of Alexian Hospitals, Chicago.
He spoke on being “Vocation Minded.” Leonard Wright was M.C. Father Schorn also spoke. Ed Sullivan Show on T.V. shows Oklahoma. It is the 12th Anniversary. Don family spend 10.30 A.M. to 145
P.M. and also the evening with us.

warmer but a beautiful day just the same.

Took Anton Fürwerth former janitor at St. Johns to Clintonville to see Father
John Murphy and Ellen Ropelle. Father
has a congregation of 400 families at St. Roses also a new school. He tells me Father Aloys Bastian build the
parsonage in 1904. Left at 145
back at 615 P.M. Thres plays
cards at Louise Zentner’s but no prize.

29. Tuesday: Attended Kiwanis Luncheon – a movie on
Capital Air Lines new planes in shown. Lyndon
Waters manager of the local A.A.A. office is a guest. Ed Binder is in my office for a business
visit. Attended 645
Mass Father Milbauer. Also attended
evening service with Thres.
30. Wednesday: Weather is moderating, temperature
up to the 40’s. We are enjoying nice
bright days. Took a drive to Fond du Lac
this afternoon all by myself; to pick up 50 Vials Armaurs liver extract 20 mcg
10cc. from Dana and Worms Drug. Visited
with Ed Worm. Find that Ed and Fred
still wait on quite a number of customers.
Attended another meeting at Father Schorn’s in regard to Monsignor’s
Memorial. Joe Hemmer –Joe Seibold –Dess Wirtz
–Ed Binder – Al Potter.
31. Thursday: [M 9 M] To 645
Mass, temperaures up to over 60 today. Father Victor Kandy dropped in at my
office today for a visit. Emma Baier had to be committed again this morning.
She is to be pitied, but it seems she gets these bad spells every spring. I
don't see how Joe stands up under this terrible strain. Attended father daughter
banquet with Don and Debby at K.C. Club.
