Diary of Alfred E. Potter May, 1954

01.  Saturday: Joe Weisheipl would have been 70 today, had he lived.  Mandus Roebke resigned from the police force effective today.  Appointed Jan. 16 – 1929.  Don – Arlene – Mary Ann attend N. E. Wisconsin Camera Club Council at Sheboygan today.  They say sunshine prevails there, we had none here.  Mama and I see “Hell and High Water, Cinemascope picture at the Oshkosh starring Richard Widmark –Bella Darvl – David Wayne – Gene Evans also “Fort Algiers” Yvonne De Carlo also “Tournament of Roses.” Heiss Bakery closes retail store today.
02.  Sunday: First Holy Communion at St. Vincents and Sacred Heart today.  A heavy downfall of rain greeted us after 730 Holy Mass.  “Butchie” Phelps makes his first Holy Communion.  It rains most of the day.  Orders I made out today are heavy, U.D.W. order 16 pages; and 16 others.  Bing Crosby is 50 today.  A.M. Bleyer, director of Oshkosh Vocational School for past 33 years, passed away suddenly yesterday morning at 9 Oclock in his yard at 421 Vine St. Born in Milwaukee May 4 – 1883.  Married Bessie Gulliford Nov. 24 – 1917.

03.  Monday: Paid last respects to Ethel Thompson at Mallery Seinfelds then to Konrads to pay last respects to John Jungbauer.  Norm Brown and myself had luncheon at the “Delicious” Restaurant.  A very nice luncheon and reasonable.  We have all kinds of weather today, snowed several times, sunshine – cloudy and cold.  Temperature is 28 tonite.  Don’s and family are over tonight.  I had a bad day today, heart and chest pains almost continuous.  Rev. B.H. Romanowski installed yesterday at St. Pauls Ev. Reformed Church
04.  Tuesday: [“Jeffreys” opens, operated Sid Hirschberg.] We get a new “Philco” refrigerator today. It opens on either right or left side. Stopped at Spike McDonald to pay last respects to Addison M. Bleyer. To Kiwanis luncheon, Park School Junior Chorus, 48 boys from grades 7-8-9 entertain us. Herbert Romlow passed away yesterday 4.25 A.M. at Mercy. He had suffered a heart attack Sunday morning. Born May 1, 1920. Married Betty Jane Dumke July 27, 1946. He was the son of Archie Romlow, an old school mate of mine.  Watson Carver –Secy. Carver Ice Cream Co. died Monday 2.40 P.M. at home 414 Merritt St.
05.  Wednesday: [R 4 M] George and Doris Mitchell complete washing walls and woodwork today. Took Annie Weisheipl to Security Bank today to cash in her Savings Bonds. Had 21-25 dollar ones.  Marge Haverty gets a table model T.V. and she is thrilled.  Mary Theresa Grable, daughter of Joe and Clara Grable married to Edward Wondra of Mayville, by Father Dave Bunkleman at Sacred Heart – 10 – this morning.  Reception at Sacred Heart Hall this afternoon 2 to 7.
06.  Thursday: This is a busy day around here.  The plasterers put on the final coat and the Mueller Appliance boys are here to put our television Antenna on the house.  Mother cleans up the room after the plasters completed their job.  Our television reception is very good.  We have company almost every night, Don’s Family; Monday – last nite – tonite.  We are getting better acquainted every day.
07.  Friday: To 645 Mass Monsignor Bastian Joe Rieger’s drivers license arrives today.  Took it over to him and learn from Mrs. Panske that she was in an auto accident.  She tells me she only broke her glasses.  Her sister Mrs. Kriha is helping her with meals.  Paid last respects to Frank Jungwirth tonight at Sitters.  Had a pleasant visit with Catherine she is in San Fernando California.  She attends one of the old original Mission Churches there.  John, her husband is maintenance man with the Bendix Corporation.  Also learned from Catherine, Mrs. Panske was taken to the hospital this afternoon.

08.  Saturday: Art and Agnes Hazen back from Denver last night.  Art’s dad was operated on Thursday by a specialist in Denver.  The right kidney was found to be cancerous and had to be removed also part of the bladder.  Dr. thinks operation successful.  Mr. Hazen is 68.  We have a variety of weather today, a little sunshine, a little snow, a little rain.  Saw “Night People” at the Oshkosh with Gregory Peck – Broderick Crawford – Anita Biork – Rita Gam also the Joe Louis Story with Coley Wallace as Joe Louis and Hilda Simms as “Marva.”
09.  Sunday: We are heading for more sunshine, altho cool. To 730 Hi Mass - Father Milbauer. It is a special Mothers Day Hi Mass for the welfare of Thres offered by Mary Ann.

10.  Monday: [R 4 M] Norm Brown is with us for noon meal.  Thres plays cards at Kalbus on West Irving and gets first prize with a score of 71.  Im busy with our orders today.  Worked until 11 P.M. put in 11 hours.  Frank Stepp is named Director of “Oshkosh Vocational School” tonite.  Succeeds A.M. Bleyer.
11.  Tuesday: [TG] We had our rain early this morning. Attended Kiwanis luncheon. Boy Scout executive spoke to us. To Mercy Hospital, Sister Phillipina gave me 200 dollars on Frans Stampfers note. Stopped in to see Mrs. Panske, she is much improved. Back to Mercy this evening for crowning of the May Queen, an impressive service. Cameras are evident. Sister Emmlia is a photographer also. Sister Laurentina has news for me. Joan Diley from Omro is going to join the order of the “Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother.” Sister Capistrana is also well pleased with Joan decision.  Also learn from Joan her father was converted to the Faith 4 years ago.  Also visited Alma Leupold.  Art and Julie (Bob Brands sister) Leupold are with her.  Don and family are with us tonight.
12.  Wednesday: [R 4 M] Ed Labudde was in my office last night.  Learned he has not been with Universal Motors since April 9.  John Felker Donald’s father in law is 47 today.  Attended Father Alphonse Wagner’s sports banquet at 630.  Carl “Red” Wyzcowski Assistant Director of Milwaukee Braves Public Rlations is the speaker and a good one too.
13.  Thursday: Well! Well! Spring, or should I say Summer has arrived. It is really a beautiful day, temperature  "Im guessing at this" around 70°. Had a surprize visitor today. Ted Steckbauer whom we have not seen for years. He has been in the "Navy" Air force since 1946. Is married, has a little daughter. His brother Ed is a geologist in South America. Ted thought he is working for Standard Oil. Thres has Annie Heip, Thres Fretchel, Emma Lemke over tonite for “Pokeno.” Ma won 150 pennies. Took them home at 12.15 A.M. I stopped at Herbert Pitz's 110 Merritt St. tonite with 4 prizes for the Convention for the Blind. Wrote a letter to Father Crispin tonite. He is taking care of Father Gerald's correspondence.
14.  Friday: A beautiful day, temperature above 70°.
15.  Saturday: The weather is just right to go to the cottage.  It is our first visit and of course we do some work.  Billy Mauritz and Don help take off storms, Thres and I wash windows and put on screens, and also have a chance to try out power lawn mower on our grass.  After trying it we made buy one.  Temperature up to 74°.
16.  Sunday: [7 hrs.] To 730 Hi Mass Father Wagner.  Weather is good.  Mary Ann to Hi Mass at St. Johns.  Had a surprize visitor this noon at the store.  Leo P. Hamman, he is still with McKesson Robbins lives at Joliet Ill.  He is married to one of the Louis Garezer sisters.  She died a few years ago and Leo is remarried.  Thres and Mary Ann attend St. Vincents C.Y.O. play “Jennie Kissed Me.” John Wagner stars as Father.

17.  Monday: [R 4 M    9 ½ hrs.]  Had another surprize visitor this morning, a man I had’nt seen in many years, in fact I would not have known him. He asked if I am Mr. Potter. Told me he remembered when I was brought to Oshkosh as an orphan, also playing mandolin when I was a boy. His name Jim (Joachim) Nachtman. He is 69 and boarding at Seborah's. Lost his wife 5 years ago.
18.  Tuesday: Made a belated application for Federal Retail Liquor Licenses for 1952 – 1954 at Jim Dyckhoffs Office.  Sent in also a penalty of 5000, at which I hope will be sufficient.  Our Kiwanis program was interesting.  The 4 H boys and girls speech winners gave us their talks.  Joe Hemmer gave his Optimist talk.
19.  Wednesday: [R 2 M] Donald and myself to Milwaukee this afternoon.  To McClurg’s find Renee Kimmel did not receive my card about coming to town.  Lydia Schmidt took our order.  After McClurg’s took Don to St. Johns Cathedral we are in time for “Little Flower Devotion” and Blessing of the Blessed Sacrament.  Then to dinner at the Schroeder guests of Eastman Kodak, Fuzz Getchel and Mrs. Bob Rieckman and fiancée are here also.  Met Link Burroughs – Les Wittenberg of Eastman.  Les is quite a talker.  Fred Roberts conducts the meeting.  Left Milwaukee at 10.45 P.M. – when nearing Oshkosh on new highway 41, we are stopped by a county officer Edward Misch.  He clocked us at 65, our speedometer never showed over 55.  Let us off with a warning and told us to get the speedometer checked.

21.  Friday: Don Green checks my speedometer this morning and finds it to be 10 miles slow.  Have to bring it and Monday A.M. to have it taken care of.
22.  Saturday: This is a busy morning for me.  Took Sisters Vera – Mathilda – Alverna – to Green Bay.  Stopped at De Pere – St. Frances Convent met Sister Mathias – she is Matt Kindermans daughter.  Back by noon then to Berlin to see Harry Kujawa at the bank, stopped to see Agnes.  They gave me a duck – a pheasant – and Raspberries from the freezer.  Harry has a new Buick, got it in February.  Don and family are over tonite.  We listen to the “Cerebral Palsy Telethon ” I staid until 1.45 A.M.
23.  Sunday: To 730 Mass and I’m rather tired after 4 ½ hours sleep.  More telethon, it lasted until 3 P.M.  Had 14000 this morning, had over 61000 dollars at 3 this afternoon and more coming in.  Celebrated Donald Jrs birthday this afternoon at Don’s place.  John – Lucille Felker and Sandra are there.
24.  Monday: [4 M] Donald Alfred Jr’s. birthday is today, and he’s a big 2 year old boy.  I’ve been bothered with toothache aplenty the last few days.  Had Norm Brown over this noon.  The steaks are somewhat dry.  Ma started fixing them too soon.  Had a date with Norm Kleinschmit D.D.S. at 4.45.  He would not pull my bad tooth.  He put some medicine on it.  Official temperature 77° today.  It was 54° when I came home from work tonite.
25.  Tuesday: Ken Sepersky is in town.  He turned me down for Kiwanis luncheon today.  He had work to do.  Ken tells me Joe Galvin died two weeks ago today.
26.  Wednesday: [R 4 M] Gerald Calders birthday, born 1930.  Mama and me are at the “Fox Studio” not the movie studio, this morning to have our picture taken.  I hope it will be good.  This afternoon Dr. Norm Kleinschmit yanks out my right upper molar.  Its been giving me much trouble of late.  Tonight we are at Poklasny’s Rosary offered for Anna Frank.  I chauffeured home Annie Heip –Mary Schneider –Clara Andraschko –Anna Dobish Jungwirth – her daughter Rose.
27.  Thursday: To 630 Mass, Father Milbauer.  I feel somewhat woozy today, my jaw is still quite sensitive.  Dropped in at Fiss and Bills to pay last respects to Joe Kitz.  Had quite a visit with Ben Krippene in my office tonight.  Tells me he was converted to the Catholic Religion about a year ago.  Temperature at Park Falls is 35° this A.M.

28.  Friday: [R 4 M] Joe Kitz is laid to rest today.  Services at St. Mary’s Church Rev. Earl Schuh, burial at Pine Grove Cemetery – Wausau.  Paid last respects to Joseph Baier this afternoon.  Had quite a visit with his daughter Mrs. Arthur Dumke.

30.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Vincents Father Wagner.  Well we have a new Saint.  Pope Pius X is canonized by Pope Pius XII.  Took a drive to the cottage helped ma clean windows and furniture.  Had Donald with us.

31. Monday: Had quite a storm (thunder in rain) about 3.30 this morning.  Took a ride to the cottage with Wilbur Mueller.  Tried to get our Motor for water started.  It did with a 25 Amp fuse.  Guess I’ll have to take Ed Radke out to find out what is wrong.  Worked a while in my den this morning.  Had another heavy storm for a time this afternoon.  Attended rosary for Kantius Weber at Poklasny’s at 7 Oclock.  I cleaned the kitchen cubbard for mother this afternoon.  It was lots of fun.
