Diary of Alfred E. Potter March, 1947

01.  Saturday: [T] Faye Baier has a birthday.  Hours of work this week.  Joe Baier sick this week.  Art Mueller 64 A.E. Potter 79 ¼
02.  Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass St. Vincents Father Alfred Schneider has the sermon and also gives us his farewell blessing.  This afternoon the congregation is farewell party for him at the School Recreation Hall.  Thres and Mary Ann win prizes.  His Holiness Pope Pius XII is seventy one today.  Eva (Mrs. Harold) Mueller has a birthday.

03.  Monday: Trying to complete our inventory today.  Had Donald help me.  Viewed the remains of Mrs. Nigl at Sitters this afternoon.  Dropped in to Joe Baier’s several times with inventory sheets.  Thres and self also dropped in to see Grandpa Fretschl.  He is a little stronger today feels like talking.  Alvina Putzer asked me what to use for tooth ache when you have no more teeth.  I told her teething lotion to get ready for a new set.

04.  Tuesday: [T] Joe Baier is back on the job this morning. I complete our figures for inventory this evening. Attended St. Vincents tonite with Thres and Mary Ann. Rose Weisheipl is back on the job this morning. Sisters Irene and Phillipa from Mercy Hospital are over about some candles for priests in Germany.
05.  Wednesday: A lovely day.  Visited Harry Lyman at the State Hospital this afternoon.  He was very glad to see me.  He tells me, gets very lonesome, only Phillip comes to see him once a week Sundays 330 to 4 P.M.
06.  Thursday: Herb Mugerauer and _____ Kromm are married at Sacred Heart this morning.  Aunt Lena –Aunt Annie – Thres and others almost all the wedding ceremony.  It was to be at 8 Oclock but a last minute change and it was performed at 715.  When the folks arrived it was over with and the newlyweds gone.
07.  Friday: Meet our new assistant priest Father Alphonse Wagner.  Our Mary Ann has a birthday.  No formal celebration.  Aunt Lena Baier is over for dinner this evening and Aunt Annie Heip and Thres Fretschl are over for cards.  The party breaks up at 1 A.M.  Mrs. Frances Resch Kuebler wife of Louis Kuebler passed away this morning at 10.40.  Born in Austria June 21 – 1871.
08.  Saturday: Hours of work this week:            Joe Baier 42             Art Mueller 69 ¼       A.E. Potter 73 ¾
09.  Sunday: To St. Vincents 730 with Holy Name Society, then to work.  After a nap this afternoon took a drive with Thres and Mary Ann to Winneconne thru Omro and stopped off at Berlin to say hello to Harry and Agnes.  They are invited out for the evening.  We are back home by 630 and I’m back to work at 7:00 P.M.

10.  Monday: The J. I. Case Co. strike which began Dec. 26 - 1945 is finally ended and men will be back to work by the end of this week. Mrs. Louis Kuebler is laid to rest.
11.   Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon.  Ray Baxandall and myself are table partners.
12.  Wednesday: [RW 2 M] Visited with Mrs. Ernestine Dumke this afternoon.  She was glad to have some company.  She likes to reminisce.  I worked until 930 this evening.  We have company.  Uncle Joe and Annie Weisheipl – Thres Fretschl are here for cards.  I took them all home at 2 A.M.
13.  Thursday: [R2 M] Governor Walter Goodland passed away suddenly last night at 1015. Had a heart attack while preparing to go to bed. Must have been winding his watch at the time. It was found lying on the floor. Oscar Rennebohm was sworn in today as Governor.

15.  Saturday: Governor Goodland is laid to rest today.  M.C. (Matt) Mertz is 80 years of age today.  A party is had in his honor.
16.  Sunday: [R4 M] To 730 Mass St. Vincents.  Rev. Alfonse Wagner has the ceremony.  Then to work Donald –Mary Ann- Mary Ann Tomashek – Rose Weisheipl are our crew today.

17.  Monday: Dr. Ray Wagner is laid up with a bad cold.  Katherine Lenroot, Chief of the Childrens Bureau in the United States department of labor is here this evening to deliver an address.  Her subject “Public Responsibility for Child Welfare.” I represented “Kiwanis Club.”
18.  Tuesday: [R E 3 M] Two Kiwanis luncheon.  Veronica Bowden, head of the Camp fire girls had three of her little ladies asking Kiwanians questions for which they received awards.  Jerome Dichtl passed away this afternoon at the home of his sister Mrs. John Nigl.  Born in Austria Sept. 28 -1875.  He will be missed much by the Janitor at St. Vincents as he was there daily at the church or school making himself useful wherever possible.  Attended Stations and Mother of Perpetual Help services tonite at St. Vincents.
19.  Wednesday: This is a busy day for knights of the grip at our south store.  I waited on quite a number of them, also putting up the order for the North Store.  I stopped to see Bill and Emma Siewert.  They have been on the sick list this last week.  They are much improved.  Took Thres tonite to Poklasnys to view the remains of Jerome Dichtl.  Stopped at Ed Fretschl’s but Grandpa are is going to bed – and Thres is playing Bingo at St. Johns

20.  Thursday: Dr. Ray Wagner is back on the job.  Took Aunt Lena and Mary to Poklasny’s.
21.  Friday: Jerome Dichtl is laid to rest today. R.I.P.  Received a letter from the folks in Germany today.  Mailed to us January 29th by Thea Rothbauer, Postamt Parsberg Oberpfalz Bayern, Germany, American Zone.
22.  Saturday: [T] Stuck to the seller today and did quite a bit of cleaning up.  A year ago this evening our beloved Mr. Mueller passed away suddenly at his home.  I was with him at the time.
23.  Sunday: Thres to St. Johns with Council of Catholic Women.  I attended St. Vincents with Mary Ann, she with the Lady Foresters.  Worked all morning.

25.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon.  Lee Conroy is back from his vacation down south.  He came back yesterday afternoon.  He had quite a visit with Bob Lutz and Marie at Donna Texas near Brownsville.  Reuben Lutz is also there raising Citrus fruits.  Henry Zentner is our Baby Kiwanian today.  I win another necktie, it’s Harry Bruegger’s birthday donation.  Dropped over to Fretschl’s this afternoon.  Thres is resting.  Left a basket of canned goods.  Donald plays with the Civic Symphony Orchestra tonight at the Recreation.  I took Aunts Lena and Annie.

27.  Thursday: The Joe Weisheipls get an electric refrigerator today. Its a Frigidaire. This is quite a treat for them. It is their first electric. They've been using our old ice box for the last twenty one years.
28.  Friday: Paul Jungen is 23 today.

30.  Sunday: [T] To 730 Mass at St. Vincents.  Father Bastian blesses the Palms.  Service with Hi Mass is over at 830.

31.  Monday: I’m much on the bum today, but manage to put in Eight hours of work.
