Diary of Alfred E. Potter November, 1946

01.  Friday: We are out early today for Mass 530.  Hi School Homecoming day, and it is a day of rain.  The football game is postponed.  Another very busy day at the store.  After work tonite over to Uncle Joe Weisheipl’s for Aunt Lena –Thres Fretschl  and Mayme Thres are played sheephead. Its in the nature of a little get together to celebrate their their fortieth wedding anniversary.

02.  Saturday: To Mass at 730 this morning, and then to work.  Had Donald –Lyle Runke – Jack Rothe help me to rearrange and clean our warehouse at 928 Oregon St.  The boys did a very good job.  More rain today.  Tonite we attend the Strand to see Bob Hope and Joan Caulfield in “Monsieur Beaucaire.” Took Aunt Lena Baier with us.  “The Falcons Alibi” stars Tom Conway as Thomas Lawrence.

03.  Sunday: [T] To 730 Hi Mass at St.  Vincents.  Father Leo Ott offers the Mass.  Then to work.  Took Mary Ann – Joan Mauritz to town.  They attended Oshkosh Theatre to see “Bad Bascomb” featuring Wallace Berry –Margaret O’Brien.  This is another day of rain.  Uncle Joe Weisheipl has trouble with his hands again, he tells me he has had it over two weeks and now he also has a swollen right eye from a cold.
04.  Monday: Well its another birthday for me, and the rain is also over with for a while, we hope.  It’s a beautiful birthday.  Got a card from Norm and Sybelle Brown.  Spent the evening at home.  Lawrence Kinateder is over for the evening, and we play cards with Donald – Mary Ann – Mother.  Mailed a package to: Thea Rothbauer, Postamt Parsberg 13A, German American Zone this morning.
05.  Tuesday: Another beautiful day, and it is election day, looks like Republican weather.  Took Harry Ferry to Kiwanis luncheon, and this may be the last time, as he is taking over another territory.  Bill Kemnitz won my birthday prize, a Wrisby Saddle Club Set.
06.  Wednesday: This is Emma Siewert birthday, she is 60, I called and graduated her this noon.  Thres and she do some shopping this afternoon.  He election would very much Republican, Gov. Goodland 83, elected by 200 000 margin Joe McCarthy, Appleton, gets Bob La Follette’s place in the Senate, also over 200 000 margin.  Took in the Strand tonite, saw 3 pictures.  “Greenwich Village” in technicolor with Carmen Miranda – Don Ameche – William Bendix – “Janie ” with Joyce Reynolds –Robert Hutton Sneak Preview “The Shadow Returns” Kane Richmond – Barbara Reed
07.  Thursday: Kummerows deliver a Gainsborough chair and a combination telephone desk and seat to our house this morning.  These are mother's and my birthday presents.  Just learned this last present is a "chatter bench."
08.  Friday: This is E.J. Burnside’s birthday.  He is a veteran druggist of Ripon, 88 years of age.  Dropped him a card yesterday.  Aloys and Mary Drexler 907 - 7th St. are married 25 years today.  They have four children: Richard, Mrs. Florence Kuklinski, Dennis, and Gertrude Drexler. Thirty-nine years ago I boarded with Aloys' grandmother Theresa Drexler at this same address.
09.  Saturday: Fire destroys the Schoblaske tavern in Van Dyne last evening.  Began about 7 Oclock with an explosion of an oil burner in the basement by 830 that tavern and home were gone.  This was an old landmark, Mrs. Schoblaske had conducted the store in tavern for 50 years.  Leo Propson the present owner bought it within the last year.  Loss about $20 000.
10.  Sunday: To 730 Mass with St.  Vincents Holy Name, then to work.  Thres had some very fine steaks for us for dinner.  Mary Ann takes Aunt Lena to the Strand this afternoon to see Danny Kaye in “The Kid from Brooklyn.” Aunt Lena is here for supper.  Bill and Emma Siewert are here to spend the evening.  Party breaks up at 1 A.M.
11.  Monday: Had a visit with Sister Edgar tonite at St.  Vincents Sisters Home.  She has plans for the remodeling of their chapel.  Joseph Grabl and Clara Bauer married 15 years today.  They attend a special thanks giving High Mass at St.  Johns.  Reception at the home, 1031 – 10th St.  tonite.
12.  Tuesday: Norm and Seville Brown are in today.  Norman is hobbling along with a cane.  We have a meeting at our store tonight, to discuss the proposed plans for a superstore on the south side.  Got home about midnight just in time to wish Thres a happy birthday and have a few toasts.  To bed at 230 A.M.
13.  Wednesday: Thres is 60 today, and is feeling pretty good.  She gets bedroom slippers – a dress – an apron –and the Sunbeam Toastmaster.  Thres and Aunt Lena are on committee for Ladies Christmas Party at St.  Vincents meet at Mame Siewerts.  Aunt Lena is with us for supper, and spends the evening with us.

15.  Friday: We have company tonite, and it is tonite because Uncle Joe Weisheipl had an evening off from work.  Ed and Thres Fretschl - Uncle Joe and Annie - Aunt Lena are here.  Aunt Annie is really feeling excellent after a few tonics. Uncle Joe's eye is OK and his hands look pretty good.  Thres and yours truly also receive presents.  I got linen handkerchiefs.  The party broke up at 210 A.M. with Annie still going strong.  Oscar Hunteman is in to see me.  Have’nt seen him in months.  He now sells shrubbery, used to be with Sitter Beverage.
16.  Saturday: Attended the Oshkosh Theatre tonight with Thres – Mary Ann – Aunt Lena Baier.  Abbott and Costello – Marjorie Reynolds –Binnie Barnes star in “The Time of Their Lives” Frances Langford stars in “The Bamboo Blonde.” Karl Jungen is wedded this morning to Florence Mae Koerner at St.  Mary’s Church Menasha.  Her parents Mr. Mrs. Alois J. Koerner have a reception for the folks at 80 Edgewater Drive, Menasha
17.  Sunday: [E] To 730 Hi Mass at St.  Vincents then to work.  Visited Mrs. Ernestine Dumke this evening.  She has completed 89 years of life today.  She is in bed, not any too well, but happy.  She tells me if she should’nt get up from her sick bed, she is going to heaven.  Stopped also to visit Anna (Mrs. John) Drexler 1210 – 9th St.  that no response to our knockings at the doors.
18.  Monday: George (Corky) Weisheipl had a short session with the judge this morning.  One hundred dollars and costs for erratic driving early this morning.  I missed Kiwanis directors meeting today.  Officers elected O.R. Jones Pres. Glenn Fadner Vice Pres. Bud Menzel Secretary.  Harry and Agnes Kujawa are with us this evening.  Thres calls me home at 930.  A pleasant visit with Sardines, beer etc. etc. for lunch, the folks leave at midnight.  Thres entertained today at cards, So Side B.M. Auxiliary, 17 ladies are here.
19.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon, George Harrington – Martin Christenson – Dave Johnson –Ethan Pfefferkorn and yours truly, make up a table.  Aunt Mary had a little accident upstairs this morning, so Donald reports.
20.  Wednesday: Aunt Lena is with us today, took her Thres and Mary Ann to the Oshkosh “If I’m Lucky” stars Perry Como – Harry James – Vivian Blaine – Carmen Miranda – Phil Silvers.  “Death Valley is technicolor Robert Lowery – Helen Gilbert –Nat Pendleton.  Robert K. Henry, Congressman 2nd Dist. Wis. died today at a Madison hospital.  Had been ill several weeks.  Born Feb. 9 – 1890 in Jefferson, and was president of the County Bank there.  I met him some years back, when I took Jos. Weisheipl down to see him, about a political job, at that time he was affiliated with the Democratic party.  Elected to Congress 1944, on Republican ticket.
21.  Thursday: Soft Coal Mines are at a standstill.  Four hundred thousand mine workers do not go to work today.  John Lewis called off the contract with the government.  The weather is changing to colder, a high wind begins this afternoon.  Joseph Heisler, 1425 - 6th, passed away this morning 1.55 at Mercy Hospital.  Born Sept. 17 -1870 in Austria, came to Oshkosh 1909 from Brazil.
22.  Friday: [R 2 M] Forty Hours begins at St.  Vincents.  To Services this evening.  Those long looked for papers from Madison arrived today.  Temperature is down from 51° yesterday to 14° this morning.  To church services this evening.  Father Dave Bunkleman has the sermon.  Took our Plymouth to the garage this morning to have it winterized.  Louise (Mrs. George Demler) passed away suddenly this morning at 7 Oclock at her home 1113 – 6th St.  Born October 2 – 1891.  Survived by George, 3 daughters Verna – Lois – Shirley, 2 Sons George Jr. and Gordon.
23.  Saturday: To church 7 A.M.  Temperature is down to 11° this morning, also to evening service.  After Church stopped to view the remains of Louise Demler.

24.  Sunday: To 730 Mass.  Father Ott reads the Mass, no sermon until this evening.  Worked until 12.30, also to evening service which marks the closing of our 40 hours.  Father Edward Wagner delivers the sermon.

25.  Monday: Rose Weisheipl comes to work this morning with something on her neck, looks like one of those human insect bites.  She claims she does’nt know how she got it.
26.  Tuesday: [T] To Kiwanis luncheon.  Gene Vogel and I share a table.
27.   Wednesday: A lovely day.  John Lewis is in court today, but nothing happens.  After some indecision, we find ourselves instead of going to a movie, with company this evening.  Joe and Annie Weisheipl – Aunt Lena Baier –Thres Fretschl  are here for cards and leave us at 2 A.M.  Norman Brown passes thru town with his family on their way to Indianapolis to see his dad who is quite ill with heart trouble.  He leaves a “Mum” for Thres.
28.  Thursday: Well its Thanksgiving Day again.  A 15 pound turkey graces our table and the folks sure do justice to the meal.  Our stores are open as usual, Joe Baier – Ralph Ebel – Rose Weisheipl – Jack Rothe comprise the crew.  Took Thres and Mary Ann to the Oshkosh tonite.  “My Darling Clementine” stars Henry Fonda – Linda Darnell –Victor Mature – Walter Brennan – Cathy Down.  “Little Miss Big” stars Beverly Simmons –Fred Brady – Frank Mc Hugh –Fay Holden.  Greg Sitter has a birthday.  Born Nov. 28 – 1892.
29.  Friday: Ella Eberhardt called me this morning about more medicine.  She is in a reminiscent mood, getting to way back when she cared for the Pable children, Mary – Charlie – Aloys, that must be at least 40 or more years ago.
30.  Saturday: [T] This was a busy day at the stores.  Worked all day, and also tonite, cleaned up back basement room.  Put in 11 ½ hours of work.
