Chamber of Commerce directors interview Mr. Stephens of Connersville, Indiana for the position of Secretary. We have luncheon at the Athern. He impressed me as a very good man for the job. Dropped in to see Uncle Joe at suppertime. He is resting and shows more improvement. Art Mueller is back on the job after being laid up with a sore throat since Tuesday afternoon." [from A. E. This is also the day when President Eisenhower said "Yes" he'll run again for President. According to his docors his health at present is such that he can run, altho he will forego a strenuous campaign. 1934: "They are having quite an investigation at the Northern Hospital. 17 attendants were suspended today by the State Board of Control." 1951: "Couldn't get up so early this morning. Busy at the store trying to complete figures in inventory. Tonite we attend the Civic Music Concert of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. William Steinberg is directing 'Doris Dorie.'  Soloist is the best I've ever heard." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1954: "A fairly busy day at the stores. We attend the play Girl Crazy put on by the students of the Oshkosh State College directed by Roger Dennis, Director of the College Music Department. We enjoyed especially Dwain Vanderhoof as "Gieber' also Nancie Goggins."[from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1957: "Turned in my Charmin Paper Stock to Dick White today. To Kiwanis luncheon. Paul Whyte talks to us about the need for money for the Oshkosh Swimming Pool Fund. Paul states money is needed very urgently as we have to date about 28,000 dollars to match Mr. Pollack's $50,000. Our key sales people have a meeting at Lowell Robbins. Gale Robertshaw is in charge. It's about our Super Plenamins Drive in March and April. We are matched with Toller Drug Co. Sioux City, Iowa. 1935: "It is still snowing and blowing. All Hiways are blocked. Railroad trains are all the way from 5 to 12 hours late. We can not use our motorcycle for deliveries and I use my car making about 65 miles around town. Mrs. Hermina Andrashko passed away this morning at Sunnyview San. Born Sept. 27, 1873 in Austria. Cousin to Mrs. Potter." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1940: "Forester Easter Communion at St. John's Paid pew rent for Ed Baranowski - 24 dollars. Temperature is about 10° below zero this morning. Worked about 6½ hours today. 1956: "Debbie and Donnie (grandchildren) are over as usual in the morning. Debbie informs me that when she gets big she is going to be a "cook" and a "mother." I worked from 11:45 to 6:15 today - 6½ hours. Matt Drexler is in my office for a visit. He is also soliciting ads for the "Golden Jubilee Program of Sacred Heart Congregation." 1937: "Our furnace fire went out at home, but we did not notice it until this evening. Well it's lucky we have some hardwood, so I burnt wood overnight. Went to bed at 3:30 A.M." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1948: "I'm busy with inventory today, am working in the stock room. Ollie Kinateder sells his tavern to the LaMoor Brothers. He has not been too well of late and feels he needs a rest." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1955: "Took Margaret to the depot for the 7:8 A.M. streamliner. She'll be in Milwaukee by 9:30. Quite a bit of snow fell during the nite. I had an accident this noon while walking by the city hall on Otter Street. A hunk of snow fell from the roof and hit me on the head. My hat saved me from serious injury, altho my head hurts some. 1952: "I'm in the delivery business today. Took Walter Seelmacher to work at the Boston Store, delivered mail to the stores, delivered three dozen eggs and coffee cake to Donald (son), rye bread and coffee cake to the Weisheipls, Joe is resting when I get there, delivered rye bread to Cliff Kloeckners for K.C. party tonight. Picked up Joan Mauritz and took her and Mary Ann  (daughter) over town, picked them up again at 11:30 also Doris Heisler and took them home." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1955: "Aunt Mary is laid to rest this morning, 10 o'clock High Mass by Father Milbauer. It's a clear cold day. Margaret Radomski came in at 6:30 from Milwaukee. Service well attended by many old timers. Had the folks over for dinner about 25. Pallbearers Joe and Matt Drexler, Frank Drexler, Joe Baier, Eddie Weisheipl, and our Donald. 1942: "To 6 o'clock Mass at St. John's. A Jesuit Father offers the Mass. He also makes a plea for the Jesuit Missions, and a collection is taken for them. He tells us that Phillipine and American soldiers were trained at the Jesuit Military Colleges in the Phillipines. Took Joe and Annie Weisheipl to the Strand Theatre to see Olsen and Johnson in Hellzapoppin. They are supported by Martha Raye, Mischa Auer, Hugh Herbert, and Robert Paige. 1943: "To 7:30 Mass at St. John's, then to work. St. Vincent's basketball team to St. Nazianz to play the Salvatorian Freshman team. Our Donald (son) plays with St. Nazianz. St. Vincent's loses 36-25. This evening we took Ed and Thres Fretchel to the Strand, Seven Days Leave starring Victor Mature, Lucille Ball, also showing Truth or Consequences and Court of Missing Heirs also new comedy star Marcy McGuire. 1955: "Bus fare 15¢ today. Sister Irene called at 7:30 this morning that Aunt Mary was very bad. We arrived at the hospital shortly after, but Mary had passed away. So ends the life of as virtuous and kind a person as I have ever known. Sister said we have an angel in heaven praying for us and I'm sure she's right. I'm kept busy most of the day making arrangements. Father Schorn, Joe Poklasny, Bud Hrnak, Mary Stadler, and pallbearers. Had quite a visit with Rose Stievater, Father's housekeeper. First occasion I had to meet her. Father showed me the improvements they are working on at the parsonage and to church to give me a close up of the new Tabernacle." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]

1850: Grandma Baier is born.  She is Theresa Ann Drexler Potter's grandmother and mother of Mary  Baier Drexler.
1941: "Grandma Baier is 92 years of age today, but she must spend the day in bed. Dropped in to see her and wish her a happy birthday. Roma Bauman made up a nice German poem in her honor. Temperature is still below zero this morning, about 5°. Anna Weisheipl is surprised by the ladies of Sacred Heart kitchen workers this afternoon. About 50 are present says she, but a recount produced only 17. Well, 17 can make plenty of noise." [from A. 1952: "Dollar Day in Oshkosh is greeted with more snow and is also held over for tomorrow. It's snowing all day, hope it's nice tomorrow. Had Otto and Emma Lemke over tonite for tournament sheephead. During the afternoon took Mary Ann (daughter) to Sacred Heart to Children's Keno Party, visited Raymond and Anna Ostertag for a while and was taken thru their new home, which is complete with the exception of painting the walls. 1953: "Dropped in to visit with Uncle Joe Weisheipl this morning. He is improving fairly well now. Ray Simpson gives him treatments every Wednesday and tells him he is able to help him. Also saw Joe Drexler to see if we could stall the Pension Dept. for a month in Aunt Mary's case. Thres and I attend stations tonite - Father Milbauer. 1951: "I almost got started to work this monring; unfortunately the roads and walks are so terribly slippery that very few folks are out. 1954: "To Kiwanis luncheon. We are in for a long program. Harry Krippner shows an hour long movie film entitled "Safety Sam." Very interesting and educational about driving safely. Do not feel well at all this afternoon. I have also developed a bad head cold. To "Mother of Perpetual Help Devotion" tonite, all by myself.  "Delicious Foods Luncheonette" at 15 Algoma Blvd is again in new hands, taken over by Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Campbell. 1933: "Cork Weisheipl is in town. Took his folks along to the Opera House to see Eddie Cantor in the "Kid from Spain" People stood in line way out on the street. I paid for 2 more tickets than I should have but didn't get any money back. Visited at the Heips after the show, met Louis Stridde. Frank Kimball was there also. While we were there radio news came in that a man tried to shoot President-elect Roosevelt at Miami shortly after a speech. Roosevelt wasn't hurt but Mayor Cermak of Chicago was shot. A lady by the name of Gill was badly wounded also a child was hurt. 25,000 were at the gathering in Miami." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]

1956: "Norm Brown is over for Spare Ribs, Sauerkraut, Bread Dumplings and do we all load up. I shouldn't do it. This is quite an evening for mother. She models suits dresses and coats for Hilda and Ada's Hats at the style show of the Council of Catholic Women at the Century Club and she gets many compliments from the ladies. 1940: "Looked over some of the things our Red Cross chapter is sending to Finland. Mrs. Mace introduces Blanche Hay. We have many dresses childrens and adults also sweaters childrens and adults. Our ladies have done a fine job of knitting. Members of our garment production program are Chairman Mrs. Ruth Mace, Mrs. Lydia Pfeiffer, Mrs. Pauline Kleinschmidt, Mrs. Nora Serwas, Mrs. E.B. Williams, Mrs. Balnche Hays, (newly appointed). Mueller Potter employees have meeting tonite at 10 P.M. at North Store. Mr. Todd is here trying to teach us how to sell ladies hose in a drugstore. Gone With the Wind is shown in technicolor, starring Clark Gable as Rhett Butler, Leslie Howard, Olivia DeHavilland, and Vivian Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara. Margaret Mitchell is the author of the story. Joe and Abba Weisheipl are here for supper and spend the vening wiht us. Party breaks up at 1:45 A.M. Elizabeth Drexler is brought home from Milwaukee." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]

Met Ken Sepersky and Muriel Ziegler at the hotel. Had Rexall sales meeting at the Raulf tonite. Miss Ziegler explained the new Ann Delafield toilet good line. Kenny showed a movie of the Rexall Company from its start by Louis K. Ligget until now. Mueller Potter furnished luncheon and refreshments. We are home at 12:30. [from A. E. Potter's diaries]

1942: "Eddie Weisheipl takes another day off. Had to set our clocks ahead one hour early this morning, orders are for 2 A.M. but Donald (son) set ours ahead long before this. We call it 'Daylight Saving Time' but I think the government designated it as 'Standard War Time.' We in Wisconsin call it 'Central War Time.' 1949: "Attended committee meeting 4th degree K.C. at Tony Serwas tonite. It's all about the proposed building of a Catholic Hi School in Oshkosh. A tract of land south of the baseball park on Sawyer Ave. is available thru Bill Rasmussen. Monsignor Bastian - Fathers Reul - Murphy - Bunkleman are present. 1942: "To St. John's 6 o'clock Mass. then to work. Eddie Weisheipl is back to work after being goen 3 days to Milwaukee. He is still on the deferred list of draftees. Sent a card of congratulations to Sergeant Karl Fretschel, Navy Yard Barracks, Washington, D.C. Worked eight hours today. Had company tonite. Joe and Annie Weisheipl Ed and Thres Fretschel. We play 5 handed sheephead a different way than usual, and it is fun. I took the folks home at 3 A.M." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1955: "Up at seven, stopped at Frank Boettchers to fit a truss. Frank has to get around with two canes. To Kiwanis luncheon I did not stop for the program.  Zola Miller, Bob Bock and myself discuss a new Kiwanis Club for the South Side; we can not see how we can get one started at present. Dropped in to say 'Hello' to Eliz. Haverty. Attended cemetery board meeting, a longer than usual one. Rose Weisheipl takes her first auto driving lesson this afternoon. 1933: "Begins with a blizzard so I don't take my car to go to Milwaukee but take the train. When we get there we find the town snowed under and it's hard to get a taxi. Attended meeting of the Druggist Service Bureau in the afternoon and their banquet at the Elk's Club in the evening. Well, Eddie Worm is very well organized, take the street car to the Schroeder after the banquet and the fellows stick until 3 A.M. at my room. Fred Stanhilber is appointed administrator this morning of his father's estate. A.T. Henning and Henry Barber former trustees resigned and the First Trust Company appointed. 1952: "Ma is out at Alvina Putzer's this afternon with Thres Fretschl - Emma Lemke - Annie Heip. Mary Ann (daughter) and me get our supper at Wirtz's. We are having horse-burger trouble in Oshkosh. 1943: "Had a movie tonite. Two shorts which were very comical the bigger won [sic] was 'Twin Boys' with Jackie Cooper." [from Donald Potter's seminary diary]
1944: "...Took Fred and Mrs. Karst - Agnes Steckbauer and son Mark - Mary Ann to see Donald (son) at St. Nazianz. The roads across the lake are very icy. When ready to come home a long distance call comes in to Father Vincent for me. On calling home, Emma Baier gives me the sad news that Thres, my beloved wife, had a heart attack shortly after I left. Quick work by Dr. Will Wagner saved her. He got an oxygen tank from the Sheriff's office with which he could take care of her temporarily until the ambulance took her to Mercy Hospital. It was a sad drive home for me from St. Nazianz, always fearing she may be gone by the time I would be home. But the Good Lord spared her and she was fair when I arrived home. She had called Thres Fretschel to pick her up to go to St. Vincent's Card party just before she had the attack." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]

1950: "To 7:30 Mass, St Vincent's Thres is with Christian others Society. Monsignor Bastian offers the Mass. Mary Ann (daughter) works at the store today.  Donald (son) and Arlene bring little Deborah (granddaughter) over this afternoon, her first visit here. This evening to Sitter's funeral home where K.C.'s offer the rosary for Peter Reifer, our oldest member of the Holy Name. 1937: "The Sheephead Club are [sic] here tonite for our biweekly play. Joe Hemmer attends the party of the Morgan Co. Foremen before our game and is very talkative. Rather hotly contested 60 hands. 1951: "To 7:30 Mass Father Wagner, Lenten regulations are read this morning. To work the rest of the morning, also to 7:30 this evening, then to Sacred Heart to see Musical Variety. It is very well rendered. The Weisheipls and Drexlers are very well represented. Ed Weisheipl is very comic. The Mueller Potter organization is well represented in the audience. 1941: "Had to get up early for six o'clock Mass. Sold candles at St. Vincent's before 7:30 Mass.  Joe Baier and Ed Fretchel were on the job as usual. Donald (son) takes Ed Wesiheipl's place as clerk at the store and he does very well. Thres - Aunt Mary visit Grandma Baier and Anna Drexler this afternoon after chuch.  Grandma Baier is moved back upstairs to her room.
