Diary of Alfred E. Potter November, 1948

01.   Monday: To 7 Oclock Exposition High Mass, Father Wagner.  Fog is usually heavy this morning, but it turns out to be a lovely fall day.  This evening we have closing of 40 hour devotion.  Father John Mueller has a fine sermon, the Fourth Degree K.C. attend as honor guard.

02.  Tuesday: To 630 Mass.  More fog this morning.  Father Wagner and Monsignor Bastian.  Voted after breakfast Thres #192 I’m #193 Ninth Ward.  To Kiwanis luncheon.  Took Harvey Lohst as guest.  Sat at officers table Harry Hannisch is also a birthday boy.  John Markel (Soap) Frank Therv (Seaforth Lotion & Cologne) got my prizes.  This afternoon visits 345 to 500 P.M.  Pancratius – Mary – Frank –Joe – Theodore –John Drexler –Matt – Caroline –Grandma – Grandpa Baier.  Stanislaus Jarosch –Catherine Holzbauer –Resei Drexler – Emma Hurst.  Amanda Drexler is operated today.

03.  Wednesday: Harry Truman and Alben Barkley our elected Pres. and Vice Pres.  In one of the most unpredictable political upsets in U. s History.  Thomas Dewey and Earl Warren Republican were defeated in what everyone you spoke to thought was going to be an easy win over the Democrats.  Truman 304 Electoral Votes – Dewey 189.  Oscar Rennebohm won an easy victory for governor of Wisconsin, a majority of 121 000 over Carl Thompson Dem. We now have 31 Dem. governors 17 Republicans.
04.  Thursday: [T] This is my birthday and what a wet one.  Rain most of the day.  Calls from Annie Heip –Thres Fretschl –and the folks at the south store plenty of cards.  Emm Siewert is with us for the evening dinner.  To Mercy Hospital this afternoon.  Visited Amanda Drexler.  Also had a picture taken with Rud Hafeman and Miss Beth Daley, Secy. Red Cross, local, at the blood bank.  Teachers convention Milwaukee today and tomorrow.  Mary Ann gets a vacation.
05.  Friday: To 700 Oclock Mass St. Vincents Monsignor Bastian.  This is a day of rain.

06.  Saturday: To 645 Mass St. Peter’s.  Dr. Ray Wagner serves.  Had breakfast at the Athearn.  Took Thres and Mary Ann to see “Deep Waters” starring Dana Andrews – Jean Peters – Cesar Romero – Dean Stockwell – Ann Revere, also a Preview “Mystery in Mexico” starring William Lundigan and Ricardo Cortez, both very good pictures.

07.  Sunday: [T] To 730 Mass St. Vincents Thres with Christian Mothers.  Worked three hours.  Thres and Annie – Marion Weisheipl visit Mandy Drexler.  The Fourth Degree K.C. on guard for Bishop Stanislaus Bona this afternoon 145 St. Johns 345 St. Josaphats 715 St. Mary’s.  He recognized me at St. Mary’s, asking “Didn’t I see you at the two churches this afternoon?  Well I was there, at the three churches.  Bishop had a 50 minute sermon tonite.

08.  Monday: Norm Brown is late today.  Was pallbearer this morning – Bob Kniss also.  Mary Ann not feeling well, stays home from school.
09.  Tuesday: Alois J. Drexler passed away at 545 this morning at his home 907 - 7th St.  Brother to John, Frank, Carl, Joseph, Robert, Mrs. Ross Polier, Mrs. Max Fenzl.  Clark Hastings dropped in this morning on his way to see Ralph Sperry at St. Vincents Hospital Green Bay.  To Kiwanis meeting.  Charles Behnke and self have a table.  Albert Dunham, local game warden is our speaker.  Hugo Riese is 66 today.  Maxine (Mrs. Ray) Siewert is operated at Appleton by Dr. Moore for piles.
10.  Wednesday: Thres and self have the Heip’s and Fretschl’s over for our joint birthday party.  It’s a gay affair, Aunt Annie is very talkative.  Thres Fretschl comes in for her share.  Ed reads magazines and Uncle Joe Heip celebrates by consuming ¾ pint Old Fitzgerald 100 Proof.
11.  Thursday: Mary Ann back to school this morning, has been home a week.  Attend Rosary for Alois Drexler at Sitters tonight.  Monsignor Bastian is there.

12.  Friday: Alois Drexler is laid to rest this morning.  Had luncheon with Clark Hastings today.  He is on his way home to Milwaukee.  Had visited Ralph Sperry at St. Vincents Hospital Green Bay.  Ralph had a hemorrhage last Friday, lost two quarts of blood.
13.  Saturday: Thres has a birthday, she is 62.  No more celebrating as we had our joint get together Wednesday.  Took Thres and Mary Ann to the Oshkosh “The Lock of the Irish” stars Tyrone Power, Anne Baxter Cecil Kellaway – Lee Cob.  “Angels Alley” stars Leo Gorcey and the Bowery Boys.  After the show to Emil Lemke’s for turkey which could have been better.  Donald is at the All Star Basket Ball game.  Brings home the sad news that “Arthur Hedke” County Clerk passed away suddenly near the end of the game.  Art was a schoolmate of mine at the Old Park School (South).
14.  Sunday: To 730  Holy Name Mass.  Sermon Father Loehr.  Then to work this afternoon to get out the orders.  Worked 5 ½ hours today.  This evening to St. Josaphats Church, for the conclusion of Forty Hours.  Henry Kirk and myself leave the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus.  Father Joseph Tomczyk of Flintville Wisconsin delivers the sermon.  Ed Binder is with the 4th degree K.C.for the first time.  At home we have company – Louis – Mary Mauritz and Dixie.

15.  Monday: Started cleaning our basement at the South Side Store and getting ready for Christmas business.  It’s a mess, much worse than I expected.  Tonite’s paper carries quite an article about Arthur Hedke.  Born March 31 – 1891.  Married Rose Follett June 18 – 1913.  Adv. manager Continental 1913-1920.  Hadke’s candy shop 1920-1926 House manager and Secretary of the Elks 1927-1931.  He was still Secretary at the time of his passing.  County Clerk from Jan. 7 – 1935 until now, reelected this November.  Princess Elizabeth (Duchess of Edinburgh) bears a son (A prince) 914 P.M. Nov. 14th.  Oshkosh time 314 P.M. today Nov. 14th.
16.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon – Nile Behnke talks on art and actually paints a watercolor picture for us in 30 minutes, a very interesting talker.  Our table Gene Vogel –Frank Labudde–Frank Sullivan -          .  Our neighbor Harry Luebke has a large hole stove in his north garage door, it looks like someone tried to drive through it.  Aunt Mary stubbed her toes during the night, she can hardly walk today.  Elsie Wagner has a gall operation.
17.  Wednesday: Florian (Sonny) Peck is our new Abbott representative, taking Ralph Sperry’s place.  Ralph is still in at St. Vincents Hospital.  We attend the Civic theatre tonite to see the stage play “Life with Father” John Terrell, “Father Day” La Van Pagel “Vinnie ” the mother, Bill Fadner “Clarence” Edward Rebbein “John” Jake Dengel Jr. “Whitney” Ronald Karow “Harlan” is only nine years of age, 5th grade Jefferson School.  All fine actors.
18.  Thursday: Our new parking signs are up at the store, and they should improve business, 15 minute parking between 8 A.M. and 9 P.M.

20.  Saturday: [T] Art Mueller and Margaret Krause married 20 years ago today.  T and O Alleys formal opening.  Mary Ann stays overnite tonite with Joan Mauritz.  Bill and Rose to housewarming at Albert’s, they get home late.  Thres and myself watch the bowlers at T and O tonight.  All sixteen alleys are busy.
21.  Sunday: [T] To 730 Hi Mass.  Father Wagner Lady Foresters Memorial Mass.  The ladies of the parish sponsor a shower for the Sisters in the school recreation hall.  The Sisters received canned goods, smoked ham –cervelot sausage – cakes – squash – pillow cases – sheets and about 150 yards of goods for curtains.  Bill and Rose Mauritz 220 A.M. reports our Mary Ann.  Thres and myself attend Rosary for Dr. Hogan.  Aunt Mary could not go to church today.  Josephine Bastian is taken to the hospital.

22.  Monday: Honorary pallbearer at Dr. Hogan's funeral.  Father Scanlon is here.  Sisters, Mercy Hospital – Doctors, Nurses attend in a body.  Monsignor Bastian is taken to Mercy Hospital.
23.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon.
24.  Wednesday: [T] The Yonan brothers, John and Ted, are here and bring quite a surprize, two Persian rugs, one for the living room, one for the dining room and three scatter rugs.  John is quite a salesman.
25.  Thursday: Worked three hours this morning.  Mary Ann and myself attended 7 Oclock Hi Mass St. Vincents Father Wagner.  Have a guest for dinner.  Donald brings Arlene Felker.  This evening took Mother and Mary Ann to the Strand.  “The Three Musketeers” stars Gene Kelly, Lana Turner, June Allyson, Van Heflin, Angela Lansbury, Frank Morgan.

26.  Friday: Ted Yonan is here to complete the laying of our new Persian rugs.  Took a drive this afternoon with Mary Ann.  Had some business with Harry Kujawa at the bank in Berlin.  Worked eleven hours today.
27.  Saturday: [TEG] The first Saturday of Christmas shopping is a busy one.  Eddie Weisheipl is a papa for the second time last night at 11:50. Another boy. Florence and baby are doing fine.  Worked nine hours today.  Took Thres and Mary Ann to the Oshkosh tonight “When my baby smiles at me” in technicolor stars Betty Grable – Dan Dailey – Jack Oakie –June Havoc – Richard Arlon – James Gleason.  Also “Close-Up” To bed at 1 A.M.
28.  Sunday: To 730 Mass – Father Loehr.  Then to work.

30.  Tuesday: [T] Thres and self leave for Milwaukee this afternoon.  The weather is good.  Stopped at Mutual Drug, Otto Schmidt waits on us, Alice Costegan gets a room for us at the Schroeder.  Met Bill Stumpf there also (at Mutual).  Had a nice double “Porter House Steak” at the Hotel Maryland, neither of us gets indigestion, altho we should have considering all we ate.  Took a long walk and it is indeed cold.  Santa is busy at the Boston Store and the Brownies are climbing all over Gimbels front, a big or I should say huge Candy Cane extends thru the front window.  Took in Telenews and enjoyed the Admiral Byrd’s expedition into the Ant Arctic Regions, another walk and then back to the hotel to room 1710 and to bed.

Diary of Alfred E. Potter October, 1948

01.  Friday: [T] To 7 Oclock Mass with Thres – Mary Ann.  After breakfast we drive to Milwaukee.  Donald does the chauffeuring.  Stopped it Mutual Drug – Otto Schmidt takes care of our order.  Took the folks to Maders for (not a luncheon but a big dinner) then to McClurgs and the Church Mart.  Left for home at 5 Oclock stopped at Theresa for refreshments.  Home at 800.  Stopped at the store for about an hour.  Emma Siewert is housekeeper while we are gone.  Her sister Clara Lemke is here this afternoon.

02.  Saturday: Oregon Street Improvement is formally dedicated tonite.  Congressman Frank Keefe – Mayor Siewert –Rudy Haveman – Herb Nolte are speakers.  Two Orchestras –Square Dance –Art Messerschmidt “The Great Arturo” amuse the folks.  The Taverns along the street to a splendid business.  About 10 000 people attend the doings.  I put in eleven hours of work at the store.
03.  Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass, Father Wagner, Mixed Choir sings.  To work 3 ½ hours. This afternoon to Berlin with the family. Donald is sponsor (Confirmation) for Johnnie  Kujawa - Harry's sister Leona for Mary.  Bishop O'Connor of the New Diocese "Madison" confers the Sacrament.  It was an edifying service and a very interesting one.  A special dinner served by Agnes at 6 oclock.  Leona’s two children Jimmy and Judy prove to be very lively youngsters.  Johnny and Mary have adopted a snowshoe bunny.

04.  Monday: Norman Brown stops at our house he’s on his way to Drug Convention and Y. L. Open House.  Frank Thews birthday he is 59.  Thres wins second prize money at the Ladies Auxiliary Card Club.
05.  Tuesday: [TEG] To Kiwanis luncheon, we practise for the Song fest at Fond du Lac.  Our table Al Dunham – Lee Conroy –Ed Ledvina and myself.  Thres is at the Auxiliary Meeting tonight, at Security Bank Club Rooms.  I get out my social security – income tax quarterly reports also the state report this evening.
06.  Wednesday: Thres and Mary Ann attend the Civic Music Concert by Phillip Kinsman –Bass Baritone.  Jacob Hanneman is the pianist.  Worked 9 hours today.  Boston Braves and Cleveland Indians play the first game of the World Series Baseball at Boston.  The Braves win 1 to 0.  Bob Feller losing pitcher allowed only 2 hits.
07.  Thursday: The Indians even the series today winning 4 to 1.  Emma Siewert is here today to help Thres make a dress for Mary Ann.  Took the folks to the Musical Comedy “Now and Then” at the Oshkosh put on by the Oshkosh Junior Chamber of Commerce.  About 150 young folks take part and its a huge success.
08.  Friday: Louis Mauritz is operated on by Dr. Cummings.  A tumor like growth is removed from his bladder.
09.  Saturday: Took Mary Mauritz to the hospital and stayed for the visit 2 to 4 P.M.  Also dropped in to see Conrad Shoblaski, he has been there for 15 weeks.
10.  Sunday: To 730 Mass with Holy Name.  Monsignor Bastian celebrant.  Worked 3 hours.  This evening we attend the Civic Theatre.  After vaudeville The picture “I wonder whose kissing her now” in technicolor.  Rose Weisheipl complete 37 years of life today.

11.  Monday: Over to see Boyd Jordan at the New American Bank, then to Jimmies for one of my twice a year shoe shines, then to Kiwanis Directors meeting and also practise for tonite.  Back at work at 145.  Drive to Fond du Lac this evening to the Kiwanis Song fest sponsored by Waupun Club at the Retlaw Hotel.  The meal was not very good for 3 dollars per plate.  The Beaver Dam club won the Gifford Cup.  We are home at 11 P.M.
12.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon.  R. J. Barton formerly with the U.N. Secretariat spoke on problems associated with acclimating foreign employes with American customs and living.  Pete Beck –Henry Kuettner – Bill Kastner and myself share table.  Tonight we attended K.C. Banquet at American Legion.  Judge Gleason Green Bay is the speaker.  Bill Schaefer M.C. Joe Hemmer Program Chairman.  I feel quite bad so we leave for home at 10 Oclock.
13.  Wednesday: Ray Trovinger is in today.  Herb Kraft Sharp and Dohme is here for a short visit.  This evening we visit at Ed Fretschls celebrating his birthday (his birthday was Sept. 12th).  His namesake is today.  Party lasts until 130 A.M.
14.  Thursday: [T] Thres plays cards and Emma Siewert.  Took Mary Mauritz and Mrs. Florek to see Louis.  He is somewhat better today.  Yesterday he was not so good.  Dropped in to see Joe Reischl he was operated yesterday for double hernia.  Ken Siperski is in today.
15.  Friday: Our Rexall Concentration ends tonite.  Duck hunting season opens today.
16.  Saturday: The weather is turning colder today.  Worked 8 hours today.  Took Emma Siewert –Thres –Mary Ann to see the “Red Mill” presented by the “A Capella Choir” of the Oshkosh Hi School.  It is a “Comic Opera” by Victor Herbert and very well presented Outstanding: Mary Kontra – Pat Hurlbutt – Joyce Koch –Suzanne Duex –Jack Steinhilber – Dan Brandt –James Koch – Dwain Vanderhoof –Ron Dawson.  After the Opera to Emil Lemke for chicken and fish.  Louis Mauritz is home from the hospital this afternoon.
17.  Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass Father Loehr.  Worked 3 ½ hours.  Home this afternoon.  This evening took a walk with Thres to visit Louis Mauritz’s Matt – Carrie and John Bauer are there and also Wenzel and Alvina Putzer.  Home at 1030 I did’nt mind the walk.  Joe Hemmer drops in at the store and shows me a novel way to collect stamps.  Ed Weisheipl – Ed Fretschl  and Donald spend the day at the cottage.  They tried fishing and nearly froze, but they enjoyed a nice fire and a case of beer at the cottage.
18.  Monday: [T] Mike Ostertag and Walter are here again to paint our living room – dining room – kitchen and upper hallway.  Thres plays cards with Auxiliary at Mame Siewerts, and wins 2 nd prize, the enormous sum of 40 cents.  An auto accident on Hiway 44 south west of Pickett resulted in the death of two local young men Fred Wolf 1109 – 11th – Jack Tollard 171 Ceape St. Tom Larson seriously injured.  Fred born Dec. 22 -1927 Jack Nov. 11 – 1930.
19.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon.  Arthur Morton sales manager of Hickey Freeman Company maker of fine mens clothes is our speaker.  His talk is about living a young life at all ages.  When we are at work we should have a thorough knowledge about our work, we should love it and be enthusiastic about it.  Our table Ray Baxandall –Ozzie Witte –Dr. Graber –F.W. Vanderpool – myself.  Viewed the remains of Fred Wolf at Poklasny’s this aft.  Thres – Mary Ann played cards at St. Vincents tonite.

21.  Thursday: Took a drive to Appleton all by myself this morning.  Stopped at Valley Boarding.  Max Eli is still on the job.  His son Bill writes up for me a tentative order for basketball Shirts and Pants for the C.Y.O. and S.V. School 9th grade boys
22.  Friday: Gene Hugger is here to do some plastering in our dining room.  Forty hours begins at Sacred Heart.

24.  Sunday: Today is Aunt Mary’s birthday.  She is 75 and feeling fine.  This evening Annie Heip – Thres Fretschl  Emma Siewert are here to help her celebrate.  They are here until 115 A.M.

26.  Tuesday: [T] To Kiwanis luncheon.  Our table Elwym Nelson –Simon Horwitz –Dr. Pfefferkorn and myself.  Eric Baller and Wm Kemnitz are the birthday boys.  The Ostertags are working on my den upstairs.  Barbers have again raise their prices.  I have to pay Shave 75¢ Here Cut 85¢ Total 160.
27.   Wednesday: Find myself doing work I had not expected to do for a long time to come.  Put on most of the storm windows and didn't feel any strain of overwork.  Emma Siewert helps Thres wash the storms and I wash the outside of the windows.  Wenz Putzer’s birthday is today.  He is ___ years old.  Ralph Sperry comes over to the house to find us all torn up.  The T and O Bowling Alleys open tonite.  They are across from our south store.  Thres and Emma played Bingo at Elsie Zentner’s tonite.  The Heips are being entertained at Club 41 tonite by their family, in honor of their coming wedding anniversary.
28.  Thursday: Herman Jansen returned 10¢ to me, overcharge from Tuesday.  My shave should have been 65¢ instead of 75¢.  Thank you Herman!
29.  Friday: We get rid of the painters today, and are we glad!  Been torn up long enough around here.
30.  Saturday: Forty Hours begins at St. Vincents.
31.  Sunday: [T] To 730 Mass St. Vincents Hi Mass by Father Alph. Wagner.  Worked from 9-1230.  A beautiful day, temperature about 65°.  This afternoon to Konrad Funeral Home to view the remains of Grandpa Siewert.  Mame – Emma –were there, with the Mayor – Grandma – Emma –Hattie – Leona.  Took in the Civic Theatre.  “The Perils of Pauline” features Betty Hutton – John Lundt in technicolor.  The stage performance is exceptionally good.  The acrobat twins star.  This evening to 40 hour and Holy Name celebration of “Christ, the King.  To bed 10.30.

01.   Wednesday: We attend the Winnebago County Fair this afternoon.  Gov. Oscar Rennebohm is here for short visit.  Donald attends this evening gets in about 130 A.M.
02.  Thursday: We get news that Father Leo Ott is appointed Superintendent and Chaplain of the Oneida Boarding School – Oneida Wis.
03.  Friday: [T] To 7 Oclock Mass, Father Wagner Mass Main Altar Mons. Bastian St. Marys Father Ott distrib. Holy Commun.  Austin Walker, Rexall “Good Will Ambassador” is here tonight to address our store personnel at the Athearn.  I had dinner with him and Al Leonard – Ken Siperski.  After the meeting lunch and refreshments were served.  Donald home at 145 A.M.

04.  Saturday: To the Northwestern Depot at 11 A.M. to pick up Sister Linus (Elsie Fretschl).  She is here for a visit with her folks until Thursday.  This afternoon Bill Mauritz Ray Ostertag and myself go to the cottage for some fishing.  They really bite but too many small ones managed to get 10 good sized perch.  Home at 10.30.  Donald in sometime after 12.  Joan Mauritz is Mary Ann’s guest at home.
05.  Sunday: Hi Mass is again in order at St. Vincents.  Father Leo Ott has a short farewell sermon.  This is his last Sunday here.  Worked this morning.  Joe Baier is on the firing line.  Donald and Billy Mauritz fished this afternoon.  They do better than we did yesterday.  This evening we attend a farewell party for Father Ott.  Joe Hemmer is M. C. and does a swell job.  Monsignor Bastian looks much improved.  George Eigner and Mrs. are here for a visit.

06.  Monday: Thres – Mary Ann and myself to 7 Oclock St. Vincents Requiem Mary Grill.  Worked all morning.  Art Mueller holds down the fort.  Thres – Mary Ann and myself to the cottage to pick apples.  Had several good showers of rain this morning.  Stopped at Ed Fretschl’s this A.M.  Carl and Marion Larson are not here yet. This evening seems dull at home, got Thres to play Cribbage and that was too bad.  She lost 3 strait games, the first by 51 points.

07.  Tuesday: [T] Schools opened again this morning.  We have a surprise visitor.  Sister Linus is here with her parents Ed and Thres Fretschl.  She is quite impressed with our home.  To Kiwanis luncheon, our table Boyd Jordan – Charles Behnke – Sid Dorfman and myself.  Mary Ann is at the WCOF meeting, Thres at the Ladies Auxiliary South Side Business Men, and I’m busy working.  Put in 10 hours.  Joe and Annie Heip bring Aunt Mary home to us this afternoon, and she is happy to be back.
08.  Wednesday: Back for more punishment today.  Business is good.  Put in 9 ½ hours today.
09.  Thursday: Sister Linus’ visit comes to an end.  She is to be back in Milwaukee at 8 oclock this evening.  I stopped this noon to say goodbye.  Carl and Marion Larson are there with their son David.  Worked 9 hours today.  Viewed the remains of Leo Nigl at Poklasny’s this afternoon.

11.   Saturday: Turns out to be a rather warm day.  Took Ray Ostertag to the cottage this afternoon.  We pick about a bushel of grapes.  This is to be used to make jelly for Ray’s family.  Civic Theatre is back with Vaudeville.  We see a fine program “Rene and Rita” Color Dance on roller skates” “Harold Plummer” Contortionist Fred Jordan, Magic, and Prof. Chas. Cheer from Olson & Johnson.  “Dear Ruth” features William Holden Joan Caulfield – Billy de Wolfe –Ed Arnold – Mona Freeman a swell picture.
12.  Sunday: To St. Vincents 730 Mass.  Monsignor Bastian offers.  Our new assistant Father Loehr is on the job.  Worked 5 hours today.  Art Hazen to be gone about 2 weeks.  Howard Christianson has tough luck at the store two (2) bad errors to his credit.  Art Mueller is burned up.  Thres plays cards at Sacred Heart recreation tonight.  No prize.  Temperature 93° today.

13.  Monday: [T] Attended Kiwanis Directors meeting at the Athearn.  Ernie Drushke is in town.  I took him to all the drug stores in town.  We are campaigning for Governor Rennebohm.  Our reception is most cordial.  It was a pleasure to meet the local boys.  Bill Christl Frank Jenson –Windy Ihda Marge Haverty –Eddie Fiedler – Ray Lewis –Jake Embs –Syl Stack – Floyd Swan –Met some of our former lady clerks, Elizabeth Samuel at Muiers – Elsie Meixner at Walgreen’s.
14.  Tuesday [T] To Kiwanis luncheon.  District Governor John Nugent from Waupun is our speaker.  Our table Earl Clemens – John Markel –Judge Lucksinger –O Sandeen and myself.  Carl Schmidt born 1883 and Al Kuebler Sept. 16 – 1893 Chicago are the birthday boys.
15.  Wednesday: Took Aunt Mary out to Ann and Rose Baiers this morning for a days visit.  Had a surprise visitor at the store “Linda Dreger” from Los Angeles.  She came by plane.  Emma Siewert is here this afternoon.  Took the family and Emma out to Hi K (Otto Christiansen) Zion for dinner.  Some of the Badger Lumber boys are having a little party here also.  After the meal took the folks to George Stadlers for a visit.
16.  Thursday: Had another surprise visitor this morning.  George Beilfus is in town.  He used to be with Sargents Prescription Store in Chicago.  George is 72 and looking fine.  Temperature is up to 93° today.
17.  Friday: [T] The temperature is 90° summer is still with us.
18.  Saturday: Weather nice but muggy.  View the remains of Julius Radtke at Marquardts.  Edwin – his two sisters and his mother were there.  This afternoon Governor and Mrs. Rennebohm are here for short visit near the city hall.  I had quite a chat with Mrs. Oscar was introduced to our Police and Fire Departments and members of the City’s various departments.  Took Thres and Mary Ann to the Civic Theatre tonite.
19.  Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass Rev.  Alphonse Wagner.  A Mary Knoll Missionary spoke to us.  Worked 3 ½ hours.  After dinner took Thres – Mary Ann – Joan Mauritz – Bill Mauritz –Doris Heisler to the cottage.  The girls enjoy a swim –Bill and I fished.  Thres had to work cleaning up the mess in our refrigerator.  The gas unit sprung a leak and the sulfur dioxide created quite a bit of damage.
20.  Monday: Tony Paulick and Jr. are here to line our chimney with Vitriolite Piping to prevent damage from gas heat.  Mr. Williams with the Public Service is at the cottage to look over the refrigerator.  It is a new unit we’ll be needing.  Harry Ferry is in town.  The Parker representative is here to see about our account.  This evening out to Hugh Talbott home 54 W. Custer to fit a truss.  Nice people to visit with.  He is a professor at State Teachers College.  After work and Annie Heip – Thres Fretschl are here.  Joe Heip comes in at 10 Oclock.  We played cards until 130 then refreshments.  They leave it 215 A.M.  Joe is his vacation this week.  Donald Gerth and Richard Koch begin work at South Store.
21.  Tuesday: [T] Almost to Kiwanis luncheon, it rained so hard, I could’nt find a place to park within several blocks of the hotel.  Karl Bechler is in town.  Bought plenty Hudnut Permanent Waves and Refills.  Ken Sipersky is also here.  This evening took Thres with me to St. Marys Home, to see Sister Superior.  She showed us two new vestments I donated for a poor priest in Bavaria.  This is also primary election day.  Had quite a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Ed Gerth at our store just when our Donald brings in Arlene and Diane Felker.
22.  Wednesday: Joe and Annie Weisheipl take over our cottage today for few days.
23.  Thursday: [T] Emma Siewert is with us this afternoon.  This evening we take a drive to the cottage to visit Joe and Annie.  We find them playing 500 Rummie in the back room without a fire.  Had Thres start a nice fire in it was cozy, then the fun began and lasted till 3 A.M.  Joan Mauritz is 16 today, should I say sweet sixteen.
24.  Friday: Thres and Emma stay with the Heips today.  Donald and myself eat at Norkofski’s.
25.  Saturday: Art Hazen is back on the job for weekends.  This evening took Thres – Mary Ann – Joan Mauritz to the Civic Theatre.  Red Skelton and Marilyn Maxwell star in “The Show Off” also good stage attractions and then Chicken at Emil Lemke’s.
26.  Sunday: [T] To 730 Mass Monsignor Bastian Father Loehr preaches his first Sermon today.  Worked part of the morning, also visited Riverviewside Cemetery.  Flowers are still looking very nice, especially on my fathers and mothers graves.  Took a drive to Ripon this afternoon.  Mary Ann is at Joan Mauritz for dinner.  Com. Hon. Sacred Heart and Mother of Perpetual Help. [Note: “view” is not crossed out in original entry but “side” was written above it.]
27.  Monday: Eddie Lange is in today with Bob Kniss.  Eddie is Bob’s boss.  He is looking exceptionally well
28.  Tuesday: Bill Stumpf is in town.  Took him to Kiwanis luncheon.  Thres gets a permanent.  She is letting her hair gray out.  Price only 12 dollars.  I don’t feel very well today, but manage to put in 9 hours of work.  Our neighbor August Jackish cuts down his big spruce tree in front of the house.
29.  Wednesday: Had luncheon with Clark Hastings and Ralph Sperry.  Clark tells of his wonderful trip to Canada.  Quebec – Montreal – also eastern U. S. especially New York – Boston.  Todays Northwestern carries a page of information about Oregon St. Merchants, also our Postal Station.  Our postage stamp sales in 1947 were 28 604.68.  Recorded transactions as Money Orders – Registered letters – insured mail – postal notes 36 846.  Parcels mailed out 41 275.  Worked 10 ½ hours today.
