1935: "An earthquake which shook northeast India at 3 A.M. for less than one minute caused much damage. At least 20,000 are believed killed while unofficial estimates are 30,000 dead. Floods in Colorado caused the death of 28 people within one week. Damage is worst at Colorado Springs and Pueblo. Ellis "Pa" Roberts retires as postman. He has been a carrier since June 19, 1899. Joe Weisheipl's father, Max passed away this morning at 8 o'clock. Born Sept. 22, 1853. Married to Miss Anna Fenzel May 20, 1883. She died May 22, 1907." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1937: "Another warm day, we spent the night at the cottage, the first one this year. The children have lots of fun fishing and the grown ups play cards. I work from 10:30 to 6 P.M. 1939: "Another hot day, temperatures are up to 93°. I visit Anna and Lena Drexler. They had a pleasant visit with Margaret in Milwaukee last Sunday. Also visited Grandma Baier. 1939: "I do a lot of work with the scythe and get a healthy sunburn and does it ever burn, ouch! my poor head. Donald and Robert Fretchel get some nice sized perch. the day is hot, temperatures about 90°. Bob Brand introduced me to Mr. Fisher from Stevens Point. Mr. Fisher is acquainted with Palmer Taylor. I relieve Joe Baier at the store for supper. Joe and Ann Heip take Aunt Mary to the cemeteries and also out for a few beers. Joe and Ann come to the cottage at night, Ann is in a very talkative mood. 1944: "Drove to St. Nazianz to bring home Donald, Clarence Drexler, Melvin Karst, Harold Stadtmueller. On the way over had a blowout several miles out of Taycheedah. My auto jack has no handle, had to borrow one from a kindly farmer. Donald and Mary Ann are examined for life insurance by Dr. Leibensohn. Spent the evening at the cottage. Harry Kujawa and family are there from 3 o'clock this afternoon. A storm comes up and we drive home early. Official temperature 92°." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1949: "Up at 8:15. A beautiful day. Attended the first Memorial Mass at Riverside Cemetery. It was offered by Father Reul assisted by Fr. McKeough and Father Bunkleman. St. Mary's Choir sang, directed by Ed Heisinger. The Mass was offered at the scene of the new Crucifixion Group Fourth Degree Knights attended in a body. Doctor Meli is Father Reul's official photographer Met quite a number of sisters. I knew among them Sister Aquilina. This afternoon was spent at Bill Mauritz's visiting. Joe Baier family also there. Took the children, Raymond Ostertag, Joey Baier, Mary Jane Baier, Barabra Mauritz for a ride, then Doris Heisler, Joan Mauritz, Joan Schumacher, Faye Baier, our Mary Ann to the cottage for a short visit. 1935: "Another trip to the cemetery with Mary Drexler this time. Ted's grave now is in very nice condition. Thres has her 500 Card Club to entertain while I take the children to Menominee Park. Ken Childs and Mr. Howser are in town. N.R.A. Roosevelt's National Recovery Act is declared unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court."[from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1951: "J. C. Penny is the guest speaker at Kiwanis today. At 76 he is very interesting. He is chairman of the board of J. C. Penny Co. He is the founder of the company which now numbers 1612 stores. Took Emma Siewert to the cottage for clean up and toward evening Bill Mauritz to do some painting. Josephine (Mrs. Harry) Adams passed away this afternoon at 1:30 at Mercy. 1940: "More rain clears during the day. Donald serves Mass at Sunnyview this morning at 5:30; he is up at 4:30. Thres and myself plant geraniums on the graves of her parents and mine this afternoon. Larry Gerdes is in town. Collections on our War Relief (Red Cross) amount to 1012.13 this morning. King Leopold (Belgium) surrenders to the Germans. His government disowns him and the Allies will ignore his order. Aunt Mary has rheumatism today." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1951: "This is a real busy day for us. Met with Walker Patri and sold house at 510 10th St. to Donald and Arline. Then to Berlin and make arrangements for Loan to Donald and Arline. Back home, out to Hrnaks's for flowers, then to Riverside to plant them at the various graves, then supper and after that to Mercy Hospital to see Aunt Mary, then to the store to so dome work, to the post office. Forgot I took Mary Ann to the Grand Theatre. 1956: "Norman Brown brings a "ice box pie" for me. He spends the noon luncheon with us. Mother treats with pig hocks, dumplings and sauerkraut.  This evening Mother and I to Hrnak's for flowers and took them to the graves of her dad, mother, Mary, Brother Ted, and also my parents Stanislaus Jarosch and Katherine Holzbauer. 1955: "Took a ride to Berlin with May Ann this morning. Had some business with Harry Kujawa at the bank. Stopped for a short visit at the house to cheer up Mary if possible, home at 11:30, picked up mail, then Marge Haverty and took Rose home. Covered a lot of territory from 10:20 on. Hirschberg's Department Store closes tomorrow. This is the first time in about 55 years or more that we did not have a department store on the South Side. 1933: "Harold Mueller's birthday; he is 37 and the boys help him celebrate. Took some of the pupils and Sister Ambrosia to Green Bay this afternoon. Loretta Kempinger, Connie Heinzl, Agnew Schroeder and Catherine Ackerman are the graduates in my car." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1941: "St. Vincent's Congregation is trying the envelope system to raise funds. We receive ours today. Leona Drexler is back home and stays with us over night. I have her share Mary Ann's bed." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1945: "W.T. Grant Store, managed by Earl Smith is the scene of a drastic fire which kept firemen busy all day. The stock is a total loss and the building is badly wrecked. Harry & Agnes Kujawa and the children are here for supper. We took them down to see the Grant Store and while we were there a hold up took place at Oaks Candy Store. The robber gets 460 dollars. 1941: "To 7:30 Mass, then to work until 1 P.M. Took Donald to St. Lawrence College Mt. Calvary this afternoon. Father Lawrence celebrates his silver jubilee. Met Rev. Alexis Gore, the Rector of the College. There were many visitors. May Devotion at the Shrine of the Blessed Virgin was very impressive. The Capuchin Fathers have a privileged Altar in their chapel which means a plenary indulgence every time a Mass is offered. Donald is very much impressed. Back to work at 4:45. Worked until 11 P.M. - 9 hours today. Thres plays Bingo at Sacred Heart Bazaar; she was also there this afternoon." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1944: "A marker is being set up for Grandma Baier today at Riverside Cemetery. Rexall gathering at the Raulf tonight. Ralph Rhyner, Maxey, Harry Ferry are here. Towns represented Neenah, Appleton, Fond du Lac, Wautoma, Oshkosh. Home at 1:15 A.M. Took Thres and Ed and Thres Fretchel to the cottage to clean up the inside. 1942: "To six o'clock mass at St. John's. Visited Mrs. Hemmer; she is very low, but she still recognized me. Wired money to Pete Hemmer this afternoon. He is at Jefferson Barracks, Mo. Donald is made a Grand Knight of the Altar, the highest rank among altar boys. Other degrees are Page, Guard, and Knight Commander. Ordered flowers at Hrnak's then to Riverside Cemetery, met Harry Kujawa and family there. They spent the evening with us at the cottage. Harry is good with a scythe. Mrs. Hemmer passed away at 4: 30 this afternoon." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1943: "Dropped in to 1212 Minnesota Street to look over my old homestead where I lived as a boy 40 year ago, also to see Mrs. Ernestine Dumke, our old neighbor; she is very happy to see me, hugged me and kissed me, and we had a very pleasant visit. She is quite feeble, tells me if she lives until November 17th she will be 86 years of age. Father Frank Schoettl and his mother drop in to see us a the store. Frank has a parish at Maple Grove. Leo Junger became a papa last night; it's a boy." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1952: "Well, it's a Boy. Born to Arlene and Donald at 7:25 this morning. Weight 7 pounds 2 ½ oz. Head 13 ½" Shoulders 14 ¼" Chest 13" Abdomen 12 ¼" Hips 10 ¾" Length 19 ½". Both baby and Arlene are OK. Wilbert Schmid and Marion Bloesl are married at St. Vincent's at 9 A.M. Donald and Billy Mauritz cut the grass back of the cottage this afternoon. 1937: "Six o'clock mass this morning. Took Ed Fretchel to the cottage to do a few odd jobs. The first thing he did was fall off our small ladder and hurt his shoulder. 1957: "Father Milbauer 6:45 Mass Temperature is 48° at 6:30 and it is raining. Thres takes another treatment a O.R. Simpson's at 9:30. Kathy Mueller according to an application is interested in taking up nursing at Mercy. I made out a recommendation for her. My DeSoto hits 61,000 miles this morning. Mrs. Paul Wertsch entertains the S.S. Business Men's Auxiliary at her home this afternoon. Took mother over at 1:45. She says about 50 ladies present, with a prospect of at least 6 new members." 1945: "Father Bastian gets news by telegram this morning that he has been made a Monsignor by the Holy Father. This is an honorary church title for those who have given faithful and meritorious service for many years. 1947: "Spent a rather busy day. Contacted Ed Binder about filling in Pancratius Drexler lot, and arrange for perpetual care for Theo Drexler, Stanislaus Jarosch, and Panc Drexler lots. Ed also consented to become my chairman of advanced gifts for the Notre Dame Sisters Memorial. This afternoon took clothes to Harry Lyman at County Home; he is happy to have them, would like an auto ride. Contacted Phil Lyman at studio and got the key for the Lyman home. Contacted Joe Kubasta and he consented to become my chairman of publicity. Also stopped at Joe Hansetter's. He lets me take 2 volumes of the History of the Sisters of Notre Dame in North America. Tonite drove to Appleton to attend baseball game and what a game. We almost won several times but lost eventually 11-9. Appleton used 4 pitchers. Bruver pitched for Oshkosh. 1934: "Attended 7:30 Mass then to work until noon. Confirmation at St. Vincent's in the afternoon. About 100 were confirmed. then back again to work for the evening. Thres and Anna went to St. Mary's Keno Party. Heip and I almost forgot to call for them. Picked them up at 10:45 P.M. and then home for a few hands of sheephead. It was some hot during the afternoon 94° at 4 o'clock, 60° at 5:30 What a change." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]

1940: "Annual meeting of Red Cross tonite, about 25 present. Nothing unusual occurred outside of committee reports also discussion about a part time secretary. Five directors were elected for a 3 year term, Katherine Weinman, Rev. Leo Oberleiters, Fred V. Hein. After the meeting visited Joe Weisheipl's Orchestra at the Raulf Hotel, met Walter Schneider (salesman), Bill Niemuth. then out to Ray Robbins, met Mr./Mrs. Foster Norton, played some sheephead. 1956: "To 8 o'clock Mass this morning. Surprised to see folks like Herb and Be Wall there. The Sisters retreat ends today. Father Sladekis in to see me this morning. Look up my friend Sister Iraneaea (Irene). Had a somewhat short visit as the folks are here to take me home.Had her come out to see Don's family; she is much impressed, she loves the children. Well, I'm home for the noon meal, feels good to be back, after our meal to Eddie Weisheipl's for another meal. Tommie made his First Communion. Couldn't let him down. They had plenty of company. 1941: "K. C. Convention (State) opens this morning. Thres takes in the ladies luncheon at Steins, plays cards with Mrs. Murphy - Neenah, Mrs. Bothe - Fond du Lac. Took in K. C. Banquet in the evening at St. Mary's. Bill Schaeer is toastmaster." [from A. E. Potter's diaries] 
1945: "Took a drive to Berlin tonite with Aunt Mary, Thres and Mary Ann. We visit the Kujawas at their new location on Maple Avenue. It is a well appointed home, not new but quite modern inside." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1957: "Father Schorn gives an inspirational sermon about the High School Drive which is on this afternoon. All workers to meet at their respective parishes for the Benediction at 1:15. Joanne Mauritz is with us for dinner and spends the afternoon here. The C.P. Telethon ends at 5 P.M. with 41,528 (total) plus the swimming pool, plus many checks in the mail. at six I took a drive to the Cath. Hi School office. The appeal drive pledges St. Mary's 103,000, St. Vincent's 90, Sacred Heart 59, St. Joseph 22, St Peters 78, St Johns 45, with 350 already in, total so far 74,700." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]

1957: "6:45 Mass by Father Milbauer - ten Sisters are present. Temperature 42° at 6:30. More rain. Had a pleasant surprise this afternoon. Ven. Sister Melora and her dad Laurie Mauritz visit with us. Sister has a day to spend with her folks. she'll be going back to Milwaukee tomorrow. The big kickoff dinner for the Cath. Hi. School Fund Appeal is held at the Park School Gym at 6:15. about 1000 men present. Bishop Bona and Msgr. Rapella are with us. Pledges up to this evening 135,000 dollars. C.P. 1933: "Mrs. Neidhammer is here again to conduct her cooking school at the Opera House. We also are on her program this time." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1950: "Took graduates St. Vincent's to Madison. My grads were boys Harold Gehrke, Ronald Spanbauer, Gilbert Werner, David Paulick, Donald Haas. They take tour thru Capitol  then out to White Fathers (Norbertines) school for novitiates. Had noon lunch there. It's a lovely place on Monona Drive. Met Father Leonard Wagner, a cousin of Father Alphonse Wagner. This afternoon we drive to Vilas Park and "Cave of the Mounds." Cave of the Mounds is nice, but commercialized much. At Vilas Park we have a trip to their zoo and also supper, then for home; get back at 9 P.M. Sisters Edgar and Alverna are along on the trip. Drivers to Madison for grads: Ruth Marheine, Pat O'Malley, Cliff Kloeckner, Mrs. Rudy Nigl, Mrs. Jungwirth, Father Alphonse Wagner, Al Potter." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1954: "Had another surprise visitor this morning, a man I hadn't seen in many years, in fact I would not have known him. He asked if I am Mr. Potter. Told me he remembered when I was brought to Oshkosh as an orphan, also playing mandolin when I was a boy. His name Jim (Joachim) Nachtman. 1936: "Bob Gittings and Rose, baby Teddy, and Mr. and Mrs. Gittings drive up from Chicago this morning. They visit at our house this evening and stay until 1:30 A.M. Even Grandma Anna Drexler and Lena came along. Lena and her mother feel very good. Well, I'm getting used to these late nights; this is #3 for us, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.  The White Bass Festival ends tonite with the crowning of the "White Bass Queen" Mary Erdlitz." [from A. E. 1945: "Thres takes Aunt Lena, Thres Fretchel and Mary Ann to Foresters card party at St. Vincent's. This is the first time she takes the car on her own since she was sick over a year ago. Tony Sipple passed away this afternoon 5:30 at Mercy Hospital. Born in Austria Jan 9, 1884. Married to Anna Drexler Oct. 20 1908."  [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1950: "To 7:00 o'clock Mass- Father Arthur. Father Gerard on side altar. This no doubt is their farewell Mass after the mission. Thres and me are busy getting ready for tonite's K.C. Party. We stop at Ed and Rose Binder's for cocktails. Tony - Nora Serwas, Les - Mary Borisch, Ed - Dess Wirtz are there also. We have a grand time at the party at Club 41. Fathers Wagner and Murphy are there. Home at 2:30. Thres feels a bit of uneasiness, a little stomach upset. She's OK in a short time." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1953: "Work this morning. This afternoon Donald, Joe, Thres, and myself took storms off at the cottage, put on screens, and cut grass in front of the cottage. I learn we are being picketed at our North Store job. Electricians strike is on.  Rudy Haveman is in reporting on Attorney Wm Engler getting a location above the Security Bank. 1939: "This is a great day for Mary Ann (daughter). She makes her "First Holy Communion." It is a fair day. She does much visiting. Sick Aunty Drexler, Aunt Lena Baier, Ray Ostertag  and family were there - Uncle John Drexler, Aunt Ottillia Drexler, Joe Drexler family, Amanda Drexler, Joe Weisheipl family." [from A. E. 1940: "Drove to E.R. Smith cottage for conference about Red Cross Drive. Erwin Spoo, Earl Fuller were with me. Mr. Smith also showed us his cottage and garages. Also dropped in to see Bob Downs at Cook & Brown and from there Ed Shrank at Wis. Public Service. No help so far, with the exception of E.R. Smith allowing us to use the facilities of the "Oshkosh Community Chest" office. Visited Grandma Baier; she is somewhat better." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]

1940: "Had a conference meeting at the courthouse lounge room tonite. The attendance was disappointing; present were Lester Ross, Erwin Spoo, Clyde Springgate, Raymond Udder, Mirian Frye, Rev. Mansfield, Earl Fuller and myself. Subject discussed was "Red Cross War Relief Fund Drive." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1954: "Well! Well! Spring, or should I say Summer has arrived. It is really a beautiful day, temperature  "In guessing at this" around 70°. Had a surprise visitor today. Ted Steckbauer whom we have not seen for years. He has been in the "Navy" Air Force since 1946. Is married, has a little daughter. His brother Ed is a geologist in South America. Ted thought he is working for Standard Oil. Thres has Anie Heip, Thres Fretchel, Emma Lemke over tonite for Pokeno. Ma won 150 pennies. Took them home at 12:15 A.M. I stopped at Herbert Pit's 110 Merrit Street tonite with 4 prizes for the Convention for the Blind. Wrote a letter to Father Crispin tonite. He is taking care of Father Gerald's correspondence." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1955: "Dropped in to see Mayor Siewert this morning in regard to using the old light poles on Main Street and transfer them to Oregon Street from 17th South. Learned it would be too expensive to make them usable and high enough, new ones are in order and promised by the mayor. Harold Ziveifel and Ed Binder are in my office this afternoon about what night turn out to be good news about the Hirshberg location. They (the Hirshbergs) might buy if the price is right. Thres and I have lobster tail at the Columbus Club and Mary Ann (daughter) and Joanne Mauritz are at Club 375. Joanne at the house for the evening & took her home at midnight," [from A. E. 1940: "Attended 9 o'clock Mass today, then to work. In the afternoon took a drive to Riverside Cemetery, also to the cottage. Worked from 5 to 6. In the evening attended Sacred Heart Bazaar. Thres won a pound of coffee. I won a bed sheet. Mrs. Will Esser across from us won 5# sugar. Visited Grandma Baier this afternoon. She is down in bed with bronchial trouble." [from A. E. At Sheboygan stopped to see Father's sister, Mrs. Herr and at Kohler his sister, Mrs. Behring. This evening dinner meeting at Athearn, all Catholic parishes represented. Bishop Bona is here also. Discussion of the practibility of a Catholic Hi School. After the meeting Father Wagner, Joe Hemmer, Louis Koelbl stop at the house for sheephead; I lose. 1954: "We had our rain early this morning. Attended Kiwanis luncheon. Boy Scout executive spoke to us. To Mercy Hospital, Sister Phillipina gave me 200 dollars on Fraus Stampfer's note. Stopped in to see Mrs. Panske; she is much improved. Back to Mercy this evening for crowning of the May Queen, an impressive service. Cameras are evident. Sister Emmlia is a photographer also. 1950: "To 6:30 Mass - Father Gerard. Father Arthur speaks on using the name of God in vain. Out to luncheon with Clark - Hastings - Ralph Sperry - Florian Peck. Annual meeting of the stockholders of the Knights of Columbus. A new slate of directors is elected. I did not get to the meeting. I did however have a long visit with Paul Waltner who worked for us in 1927. He is now with Parke-Davis, Detroit." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1956: "To 6:30 Mass - Father Schorn. Markie gives out today by beginning to creep. I visited Matt Drexler this afternoon. He is doing fine. His family was entertained at Hi-K last evening which accounts for their absence. Also learned Amanda's birthday is today. Two of the Sacred Heart Sisters come to visit Matt while I was there. Their order is more lenient than the Notre Dame when it comes to visiting homes. They also enjoyed a nice piece of Amanda's birthday cake and ice cream. We are getting orchids and orchid corsages with 4 oz. and 16 oz. Parke Davis Vanilla. Prices are 89 and 3.29 The orchids have not arrived yet. Something new for Oshkosh. 1945: "This is V.E.(Victory Europe) Day. Attended Mass at St. Vincent's 8 o'clock. Business in general is at a standstill. All taverns are closed for the entire day and evening. Our stores are closed during the afternoon. People are urged to make this a day of prayer and thanksgiving. Aunt Lena is with us today. Whistles blew and church bells pealed at 8 this morning to officially usher in V.E. Day. St. Vincent's rang for 30 minutes. Curfew and Brown out are called off." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1947: "Karl Kiekhafer is trying to cook up some more insurance for me. Took Thres out to look at the Lyman home. Art and Margaret Mueller spend the day in Milwaukee. Art sees Dr. Foerster and also Dr. Lee. Dr. Lee practiced in Oshkosh some years back. The "Telephone Strike" ended this morning. It was on for 31 days.Temperature is 30° this morning." [from A. E. 1933: "Sang Concone's Mass with mixed choir this morning. Took a drive to visit Herman Holtz and to Omro to see Bob Spaedtke. He married Theresa Drexler on 9th Street some years ack. Met Mr. Maher; he wants to be postmaster at Omro. Work in the evening; over to Heips after 10:30 P.M. Homeward bound 12:30 A.M. and it's raining very hard." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1939: "Attend six o'clock Mass with Donald (son). Took Ed Fretchel, Robert and Donald to the cottage, then to work. Thres, Mary Ann (daughter) and Aunt Mary (sister-in-law) attend Sacred Heart Bazaar in the afternoon. Thres attends St. Vincent's Keno in the evening. We also viewed the remains of George Mauel in the afternoon. He looks natural. We are treated to two cloud bursts today - one this afternoon and one this evening. We also find hail with the rain. 1946: "To Kiwanis luncheon - Bart Heiss and self are table partners. Thres, Donald, and Don DeBehnke out to the cottage to do some cleaning. Don takes the boat motor along. Due to the coal shortage account of strike, Chicago people are burning candles and using kerosene lanterns for light. Three weeks ago today, I quit smoking. 1933: "Ray Ostertag and George Lang fell into the Federal Net for bootleggers yesterday. They are caught loading alcohol into a truck on a farm near the Fond du Lac airport. The Republican Convention endorses Delbert Kenny, West Bend for Governor and Joe McCarthy, Circuit Judge Shawano for U.S. Senate. Governor Goodland no doubt will run and Ralph Immell also. 1941: "Another hot day, temperature is 86° in the shade. Frank Drexler (1210 9th) begins working at South Side Wood and Coal Company office. Ed Sittzberger from New Mexico was in today to say hello; he has been gone 14 years. His mother is also here with him. Robert Lutz, Pres. Lutz Stone Company passed away at 2 o'clock this morning at his home. Born March 27, 1867. W.C. (Clyde) Springgate head of the Oshkosh Business College passed away at 11:55 A.M. today. Born Oct. 23, 1878 at White Hall, Ill. He was secretary of the Oshkosh Kiwanis 8 years and twice president." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1954: "George and Doris Mitchell complete washing walls and woodwork today. Took Annie Weisheipl to Security Bank today to cash in her savings bonds.Had 21-25 dollar ones." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1956: "Dr. Ray and Elsie Wagner are married 23 years as of today. Art and Marie Hill are married 5 years.  Harry W. Lee and Stella Neubauer are married 41 years. Our neighbor Ernie Koch is 69. Loyalty Day celebration in Oshkosh is somewhat marred by rain. Fred Baumgartner and Art Mueller are in Milwaukee today to be inducted into the Shriners. Sylvester Propson is also inducted. 1950: "To 6:30 Mass-Father Girard. Mrs. Travis moves furniture from the house. Matt and George Mertz are over to see what repairs it needs. Mary Ann (daughter) over to see Aunt Mary. She cries when Mary Ann leaves for home. Wants her to stay with her. I got a copy of Aunt Mary's birth records from Msgn. Bastian. Find she was born Oct. 24, 1872; we thought it was 1873. She was baptized Nov. 10, 1872." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1954: "Jeffrey's opens, operated Sid Hirschberg. We get a new Philco refrigerator today. It opens on either right or left side. Stopped at Spike McDonald to pay last respects to Addison M. Bleyer. To Kiwanis luncheon, Park School Junior Chorus, 48 boys from grades 7-8-9 entertain us. Herbert Romlow passed away yesterday 4:25 A.M. at Mercy. He had suffered a heart attack Sunday morning. 1933: "Beer brewed in Wisconsin after September 1st, 1933 must be brewed with a barley content not less than 75%. This is passed by the Senate. Took a drive today to see Dr. Carter. He talks somewhat encouraging. Louis Kossel passed away last night at his home 408 9th St. Born Feb 12, 1866 in Nekimi. We used to patronize him for ice, milk, and eggs when we camped on his farm near the sand pit (Cook & Brown's) some 20 years ago. He was a brother to Mrs. Alvina Hauert, our former landlady. [from A. 1936: "This is a big day for Donald (son). He received his first Holy Communion this morning. The weather is cool. Took Donald and Teddy Steckbauer to have their pictures taken this afternoon. Attended afternoon service. Back to work at 5 P.M. Harry Kujawa dropped in for a few minutes. After work the birthday of Joe Heip is celebrated at the store, then we celebrate some more at his house. 1936: "Ann Mauritz died suddenly this morning on the way to Mercy Hospital. She took a sponge bath early this morning. About 8 o'clock she became very ill; a physician was called. When he came she had rallied; he advised taking her to the hospital, and on the way, she passed away.Born March 5, 1906. Sure a shock to all of us." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1937: "St. Vincent's Congregation celebrates Father Bastian's 25 year stay in Oshkosh by tendering him a banquet. All of his former assistants are here except Louis Schorn. It was a great event for Father Bastian. A pageant depicting his life during his 25 years pastoral here was given by the school children. They had 392 paid admissions and served small beers for a dime." [Blogger's note: I believe he is referring to his adoptive mother who was Katherine Jarosch and later Katherine Holzbauer.  This is one of the confusing aspects of A.E. 1946: "Peter Reifer (Carl's Dad) is 89 years old today. Joe Weisheipl also is a birthday child today; he is 62. Took Ed Fretschl to the cottage to spray the fruit trees. Ed Hielsberg begins painting Dr. Ray Wagner's office rooms. Norm Brown and Ray Trovinger are in for drug orders today. Hair cuts are up to 75¢ in Oshkosh, a raise of 25¢." [from A. E.
