1933: "Yesterday was a real summer day; the thermometer went to 98°.  A. W. Armstrong is given one year at Waupun and $1000 fine for issuing worthless checks. He gave us a bad one for 5 dollars. I took this up with his wife and find he has two small children. I did not have the heart to prosecute him." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1942: "Drove to the Orphanage near Green Bay to bring home Sisters Alverna - Ermanhilda. From the Orphanage we drove to St. Nazianz Seminary. Met Father Bede who showed us thru the place. It is new and strictly modern in every detail. He also showed us thru the Museum - the Chapel - the Office and the Print Shop. Donald was along and I had him enrolled for the fall semester. 1955: "To 7:30 Mass Father Schorn. Worked all morning getting out orders. Ohio Street Merchants have their children's parade and picnic today. We have Bill - Rose - Joanne - Billy - Barbara Mauritz, Joe - Faye - Joey - Mary Jane Baier, Ray - Ann - Judy - Carol Ostertag, Clarence - Florence Westphal, Don - Arlene - Debbie - Donnie - Mark Potter, Jean Horejs, Carol Schmidt and Grandpa Joe and Grandma Barbara Mauritz at the cottage. 1933: "7:30 Mass as usual. It is another hot day. Florian Kojes and Clara Drexler his wife ? are here from West Allis and the John Drexler children and the Otillie Drexler s, Matt and his girl Manda Wolf, Florian's sister and Spanbauer, the student move out to the cottage fro the day and have quite a time. I work until 6 P.M. then also out tot he cottage with the Heips. Monika Mauritz is professed in Milwaukee today. Our Scout Troop #18 leaves for Twin Lakes today, Henry Ford is 70 years of age today." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1946: "Attended Kiwanis - Rotary Picnic with the family at Northern State Hospital picnic grounds. Dr. Byron Hughes and Carl Schmidt prove themselves wonderful hosts. Donald played baseball on both Kiwanis and Rotary teams. Kiwanis won 16-6. Milking contest was also won by Kiwanis. Volley Ball Kiwanis one game Rotary one game. Carl Schmidt and myself throw horse shoes. Carl could hardly believe I don't play the game." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]

1937: "More company, Anna Drexler - Nancy - Caroline and Mary Drexler - Donald Drexler  and Tudy Mugerauer. At nite more cards until 1:30 A.M. This is Celia Drexler's birthday. She is 36. I bought a Plymouth Coupe today. We now have 2 cars. Laying the cornerstone of the new Court House takes place today." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]

1955: "We all are back in town this morning. Annie Heip was with us for 3 days. Mother gets a permanent wave this afternoon. Had a severe electrical storm, had been thundering heavily since noon but did not begin to rain until 2 P.M. and then it came down in buckets. Took Donald and family to Columbus Club for dinner and then to the Oshkosh Theatre to see Davy Crockett with Fess Parker and Buddy Ebsen and Hansel and Gretel Fairyland Color by Walt Disney." [from A. 1934: "A big strike is taking place at Kohler Village. Two are killed and 40 injured in a strike riot yesterday. The village is now under martial [sic] law. Two hundred special deputy marshals and 250 National Guards are stationed at the Kohler plant. State Senator Merritt White of Winneconne died this morning. He was 69 years of age." [from A. E. 1939: "The rain lasted all night and part of this morning and has done much good. It also breaks up the hot spell; we have had 5 days straight with temperatures above 90°. Our new South Side Theatre 'The Mode' opens tonite. Dr. William J. Mayo, the elder of the two famous physicians and surgeons at Rochester, Minn. died this morning just two months after the death of his brother Charles Mayo who passed away May 27th. Dr. Wm. was 78 years old June 29."[from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1949: "Met with Julius Sandsted, Vic Fink at Apell's to pick out floor for the new store, also at Brand's to pick the color for our new fixtures. Visited Emma Siewert this noon, she was taken to Ray's yesterday. The folks are back from Chicago. Visited Thres Fretschl, brought her a basket of apples 'to keep the doctor away.' 1934: "Got up late this morning and did some fishing. It is easy to get a mess these days. Jake Jungwirth an old classmate died today from an accident on board ship at Brooklyn, N.Y. Born in Oshkosh May 20, 1892. We called him 'Bandei' for nickname." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]

1949: "Signed contract with Robert Brand and Sons for all new fixtures at the store. The Weisheipls are at Eddie's today and Aunt Mary stays with us overnite at the cottage Joe and Emma Baier almost visited us, but a terrific rain storm stopped them. 1934: "This is another nice day. There is much unrest in European Countries. Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss of Austria was assassinated yesterday by Nazis who are trying to overthrow the Austrian Independent Government. Chancellor Dollfuss was left to die without medical aid and without calling of a priest until it was too late. The Weisheipls have a family gathering at our cottage tonite. Max - Fritz - John - Joe - Frank and John Pankner and Leo Girens family are all represented. It was a beautiful moonlight night." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]

1947: "Richard Mueller is in town over the weekend. He has his little daughter Hollis [Holly] with him. He is now stationed at Great Lakes. Worked all day, put in 64 hours this week. Temperature is up to 91° today. Elsie Meixner at the South Store is to be hospitalized this coming week. 1947: "New State Tax on liquors and wines is in effect today, amounts to 20 cents per th and 12 ½ cents per pint on liquors. Jacqueline Mauritz is 6 years of age today."  [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1952: "The Democraic Convention is going strong, Estes Kefauvre runs strong on the first and second ballot. Dick Russel is doing well but there seems to be gradual gains by Gov. Adlai Stevenson of Illinois who did not want to be a candidate. the hird ballot found him short only 3 votes to put him over; it was then Kefauvre threw in the sponge and ceded in favor of Stevenson. I was up until 1:45 A.M. (2:45 Chicago daylight time) listening until it was all over." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1957: "Took mother for treatment to O.R. Simpson's at 9:15 A.M. To Post Office, North Store, South Store, picked up Thres Fretschl, Emma Siewert Lemke, picked up mother and out to cottage. Back to work. This afternoon Eddie Weisheipl and family, Donald and family are out to spend the day. Don and Eddie work on the shore; I cut weeds in the lake. 1940: "We have company at the cottage, Bob and Emma Genal - Joe and Annie Heip. The beer was not very cold, but we got away with it. We also tried our luck at harmonizing and got along pretty good. Party broke up at nearly 2 A.M. Temperature was 95° today."  [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1941: "Art Mueller takes a day off. Temperature at 1:00 this afternoon is again 94°An example of a busy noon lunch hour: I left the store at 11:00 A.M. took Joe Kloiber 10th St. home then Ed Weisheipl to his home, viewed the remains of Frank Haidlinger at Sitter Meyer's Funeral Home, stopped to visit Grandma Baier, stopped at T.J.S. Tobacco Co. to pay a bill, had lunch at home, then picked up Anna Knaack to shorten her walk to the Security Bank, picked up Rose Weisheipl at the store, took her home, picked up Ed Wesiheipl, brought him back to the store and back on the job at 12 Noon."  [from A. 1947: "Ladies of the South Side Business Men's Auxiliary enjoy at outing at the cottage. There are eighteen women present. Twenty-seven (27) coal miners are killed today in a mine at West Franfort, Ill. The mine is operated by the 'Old Ben Coal Company.' It was a gas explosion in mine No. 8 and the dead were found about 1 ½ miles south of the main entrance and 500 feet underground." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]

1939: "Attended six o'clock mass as usual, then to work. St. Vincent's Church picnic at South Park today. Mama Potter is kept pretty busy. Had a meeting at our house of Mr./Mrs. Sutter, Joe Jungen, Charles Nolan, and myself. Trying to get the tangle in Mrs. Jungen's estate cleared up." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1948: "Brought Mary Ann to school at 8:30. This is her last day, also Donald's at summer school. Picked up some peas to be prepared for our freezer at Otto Christianson Hi-K Zion. Had Thres, Mary Ann, and Emma with me. Had a very nice Pike and Scallop dinner while we were there. Mary Ann and self visited Ray and Ann Ostertag tonite. The baby is growing fast and when we get home the peas are all ready for the freezer." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1955: "Art Mueller and Fred Baumgartner are back from their vacation. They visited many places of interest especially around Washington. Don and family are at the cottage with mother. Don burns up a lot of hay and rubbish. I worked on his orders and hope to have them out for him by tomorrow. Konrad Funeral Home marks 80 years in business in Oshkosh. William Konrad founded a furniture and embalming business in May 1875. Moved to 103 Waugoo in 1929." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1986: Stephanie Aaronson, daughter of Sue (nee Potter) and Mike Aaronson, granddaughter of Don and Arlene Potter, great-granddaughter of A.E. and Theresa Potter, is born.

1934: "St Vincent's young men and young ladies have their annual outing at the Power Boat Club. F.W. Mueller and his family are also there for their outing. They enjoy the beer very much. We spend the afternoon and evening at the cottage. The Heips and the Fretschls are also there. I left my hat at Spring Brook Tavern and got a kidding about it." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1939: "Viewed the remains of Dr. C. J. Combs at Fiss and Bill's. He is laid to rest this afternoon. Delivered many items for tomorrow's picnic to St. Vincent's School this afternoon. Took a drive to Riverside Cemetery then Calvary Cemetery, located Mrs. Carl Mueller's grave. Thres and myself took a drive to Menasha in the evening, viewed the remains of Father Wm. Mortell at St. Patrick's Church, visited fro a short time with his sister Zetta Mortell. Matt Ball is in town and Michael Dexler picks his chalice for his first mass Aug 13, 1939." [from A. E. 1943: "The 740th Battalion U.S. Army Task Force is in the city with war equipment and about 800 men. they have Mass at Menominee Park, a display on Main Street between Otter and Washington, parade at 6 P.M. and final program at Fair Grounds at 7:15 P.M. 1933: "Art Mueller is laid up today. Drove to Green Bay today with Tod Behlendorf and got rid of my old Chrysler. I hated to give it up. Had it for 6 years and what a lot of history it has piled up during that time. Drove it about 63,000 miles and mostly pleasure miles at that. 1957: ""Took Mary Ann, P. Schani, Marian Richter, Dolores Pable to the Northwestern Depot for the 7:55 Streamline to Chicago. They expect to be gone about 10 days. Met Victoria and Norman Zinth; they are headed to Denver. Eddie Weisheipl and family spend the afternoon at part of the evening at the cottage. Matt Drexler and boys also. The boys Johnnie and Joey - Bobbie and Tommie - Ed - Matt - Don and also Donnie have great fun swimming in front of our dock. Florence W. tells me she is going on a diet next week." [from A. E. 1939: "Ma Potter goes to town, so I take care of the kids. It is a lovely day. Took them swimming and about 5:30 out fishing, had good luck about 15 nice perch. Brought them in for Joe Heip so they might enjoy a nice meal of fresh fish. Brought Dolores Kinateder home as she was getting homesick for her mother. Anna Weisheipl comes back with Thres at night to stay a few days. Dr. C. J. Combs passed away this morning." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1950: "Thres and I are again at the courthouse but could not locate a copy of Thres' birth certificate. Went to Monsignor Bastian to get her Baptismal Record. Met the new assistant Father Koehn. Josephine and Madelain tell how impressed they were with Mrs. Von Hoff. They presented her with a dress and shoes. Back to courthouse where Dorothy Bickford makes out our papers for a passport. It rained all day today, must be close to 3 inches of rain. Father Wagner, Vic Pokojka are out for a game of sheephead." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1955: "Brought the folks back to town this morning. Billy is out at 5 A.M. for fishing. Attended Chamber of Commerce meeting at the Athearn this noon. John Callinan, Geo. Wagner, Harry Glick, Mort Gazerowitz, John Greenaugh, A.E. Potter. Two hour parking in business areas and uniforn\m opening and closing time for businesses on Main Street on the agenda. No more free rides on busses on special sale days. At 3:15 we left with Ed and Dess Wirtz for Two Rivers to visit with Father Alphonse Wagner. He is at St. Mark's parish; we had quite a time locating the place, had dinner at Art's 151 Club near Manitowoc, back home at 12:15 A.M. Father Alphonse looks very good."  [from A. E. 1941: "Took Sisters Herman or Ermanhilda and Marcelia to Milwaukee. Sister Marcelia stopped to see her brother Joseph Goskel at 2373 North 55th St. Joseph has been blind for nearly 60 years. He is now 68 and also has heart trouble. Met his wife Mary (Lippard) Gockel. Joseph's sister Miss Mary Gockel organized 'The Missionary Society of Catholic Women.' When Mary died her secretary Miss Mary Lippard married Joseph Gockel and carried on the work on Miss Gockel." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1947: "Little Joanna Roszek is 3 years old today, she tells me. Well, she gets a nickel and so do Bobby and Joey. According to reports picketing at Foster Lothman factory has stopped. The strike began April 24, 1946." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1957: "Another lovely day. I woked part of this morning, took off the rest of the day. Came ot town this afternoon to pick up Thres Fretschl and then played sheephead with the ladies. Donald and family come out for supper and spent the evening. Lawrence Kinateder brought out his dad and mother, Ollie and Ann. Ollie is looking good but is unable to talk. Took the folks home at 10:00 P.M. Don and Arlene dropped in about 10:30 to let us know that Arlene's grandmother Viola Esslinger died at 6:10 this evening at Mrs. Donald Kiesow's 49 Lakeview Ave." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]

1933: "Beautiful day. Heip and self visit John Drexler for a change. Ted Zuelke is over after work. He is ready to fold up, so he says. Margaret and Rose Drexler are here when I get home. After a treat they feel fine." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1940: "The Democratic Party is making history at their National Convention in Chicago. Tonite President Franklin D. Roosevelt is drafted and unanimously nominated to serve a third term as President of the U.S.A. thereby setting a precedent. No President has ever accepted a third term in honor of our first President George Washington who refused to serve a third term. Took a drive to Twin Lakes this afternoon to visit Donald. He likes camping very much. He is doing W.P.A. road work with the road crew when we arrive. Joe and Ann Weisheipl were with us. Stopped at Mrs. Herricks Omro for our evening meal." [from A. E. 1956: "To Kiwanis luncheon Dr. John Petersik from the State Hospital gave an interesting talk on 'Mental Illness' and its treatment in the various types and phases. Aloys Kinateder is being operated on at Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minn. The tented showing of the circus is a thing of the past according to John Ringling North, of the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Shows. The 'Big Top' of the 'Greatest Show on Earth' was taken down for the last time in Pittsburgh last night where 10,000 people turned out to see the show." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]

1933: "Busy day. 7:30 Mass with male choir. then to the Sisters of St. Vincent's to take Sisters Victor, Rosalind, and Engelmar to Elm Grove. Stopped at Mount Mary College, had luncheon, met Sister Giradus, Madison; Sister Mary William, Marshfield. At Elm Grove met Sister Linus and had a very pleasant visit with Sister Davidica. She is 78 and does not look it. She is still active. Had a visit with Sister Ermanfrieda. She is a nurse at Elm Grove. sister Genrose, Ermanhilda, Maximilla, and Sirena are at summer school at Mount Mary. Stopped at Claire Hochhaus 7845 Harwood Wauwatosa, but she is not at home. Milwaukee is gaily decorated for the Elks Natinoal and State Conventions.  Arrived home tired at 8:30 after an hour delay at Fond du Lac. Fan belt on my car broke and had to be replaced. Took a drive to the cottage after a late supper. Joe Heip and Ed are at the Dramatics Club and Anna and Thres Fretschl are worrying. But why? Joe and Ed are sober. Played cards until 1 A.M. Then home, picked up Mary a 1:30 A.M. at Anna Drexler's." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]

1946: "St. Swithin's Day is a nice day, somewhat cool, and according to legend we should have 40 more days like it. Tonite took Thres, mary Ann, Aunt Lena to the Oshkosh to see Smoky in technicolor. Story of an untamed horse starring Fred MacMurray - Ann Baxter. Strange Triangle stars Signe Hasso - Preston Foster. The 'Oshkosh Giants' are defeated by the 'All Stars' 8 to 2."[from A. E. 1940: "To seven o'clock Mass at St. John's and then to work. Took Donald to Boy Scout Camp at Twin Lakes this afternoon. Drove thru Wautoma  aon the way back stopped at Hunt's Drug Store. Doug is on the job and glad to see us. Ed Fretschl is repairing our dock at the cottage. Thres is at St. Vincent's 'Bingo' tonite. Leona Drexler had me take her to Northwestern Depot to meet the 11 o'clock train. Her mother Anna was to come back from Milwaukee, but she was not on the train. We then stopped the Fritz Weisheipl's for two 24 oz. beers and a highball." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1950: "Thres and me are busy trying to get a passport which we did not get, but we have a passport picture taken, also a physical exam by Will Wagner, also vaccinated against small pox and I had Dr. Don Hugo make a correcion for new glasses." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1953: "It is exactly two months ago today that workmen in the six Milwaukee breweries went on strike. To Kiwanis luncheon, Phil Straub and Mayor Voss talked on the Shriner-Kinights of Columbus sponsored basball game coming up in the near future. 1956: "This is a busy day for Arlene and family. At 8:30 they have an appointment at the hairdressers; her sister Diane is married to Bill Zimdars tonite at Zion Lutheran Church by Rev. Leo Oberleiter. Little Donnie was ringbearer and Debbie was flower girl. Reception at 9 o'clock at the Coumbus Club. Mother and I took care of Markie. 1947: "To 7:30 Holy Name Mass, then to work. Both Male and Mixed Choirs have their outing at our cottage today. Monsignor Bastian, Father Alphonse Wagner, Josephine, Madeline Bastian are present. About 75 people attend the outing. Temperature is 90°. Rain this afternoon about 10 minutes, tonite one hour. Took moving pictures this afternoon. Folks leave for home about 10 P.M. 1950: "Father Alphonse Wagner takes Thres, myself and Lester Borisch to Milwaukee. We stop at the Cook Service Bureau to get our itinerary for our trip abroad in Sept. Stop at the Pfister for luncheon. Shop at Gimbels - complete our work on the itinerary, back to Oshkosh at 6:15. Took Father Alphonse along to Winneconne to the South Side Business Men's Inspection Tour of the New Grade and Hi School combined. Had a very nice chicken dinner. Called on Father Victor Kandy after doing the school. The conversation centered on our trip - Fatima - Necedah. Home at 11:15 P.M." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]

1936: "I work all day today. Attended 10:30 Mass and nearly withered in church. Had the Fretschls out to the cottage. Ed Jr. took them out. Took Grandma Baier home from church. Made a short stop at the Baiers to see how they all are." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1937: "Striking workmen at Radford's and McMillen's go back to work today after having been on strike since April 30th. Electricians are busy at the cottage hooking up the new refrigerator and stove." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1939: "This is a rather hot day; temperature is 94 at the cottage. We have plenty of company: Bill and Emma Siewert, Raymond - Maxine - Billy and Bobbie Siewert. 1946: "Cooler today, temperature about 76°. Ed Weisheipl tells me some news. He is to be married Sept. 5th. Thres has company at the cottage; Jennie Miller, Nora Serwas, Clara Dembowiak and children, Betty Drexler (Mrs. Frank) from England, Aunt Annie Weisheipl." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1953: "Had Donald, Arlene, Debbie, Joane Mauritz and Sandra Felker out to the cottage today. Don, Joe Rieger and myself fish - the girls go swimming. Caught 8 fair sized perch. 1936: "Took two Sisters of Notre Dame to Elm Grove. It was a hot ride. Had a very pleasant visit wih Sister Davidica. She will celebrate her 'Diamond Jubilee' on August 9th. Had business to transact at Drug Service Bureau, Mutual Drug and McKesson Liquor." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1944: "Had my first opportunity at the blood bank today. There were many blood donors there. Am pretty tired tonite." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1955: "Somewhat cooler this morning. We are at 7:30 Low Mass. Father Schorn's sermon is on true contrition; he also speaks of the modesty in attire among the female sex. Well, our little grandson is baptized today by Father Milbauer. Name: Mark John. Sponsors: Floyd Essling and our Mary Ann. Had Don and family for dinner. Floyd could not come. Don takes the baby to the Sisters for a visit. Sisters Mathilda, Alverna, Mary are the only Sisters now home. They all take turns holding Mark. Sister Alverna wins the longest hold almost an hour." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]

1937: "More company; Celia Drexler, Ann Drexler, Anna Weisheipl, and Little Nancy Drexler. We get a General Electric refrigerator and an electric stove at the cottage. They make it more homelike for us. Temperature is up to 94° today." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1941: "Thres goes to town for Red Cross work, visited Clara Lemke at Mercy Hospital. Brought Emma Siewert back with her. Bill came for the the evening. Harry Kujawa, Agnes, Mary, Johnnie, and Eugene Baldwin and Mrs. Margaret Baldwin came over from Berlin to do some fishing. Tried many places but no luck. They say they do not have the right kind of bait. Well, may be they are right. Bill and Emma staid over the night. Beautiful moonlight. I get to bed at 3 A.M." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1955: "Fred & Loretta Baumgartner, Art & Margaret Mueller leave for points East this morning. Had company at the office this morning; Sisters Mathilda and Alverna, their first look. Franz Stampfer is in to see about permission to get work in Milwaukee for Bucyrus. The new Butte des Morts bridge is opened to traffic. It is quite an affair. The governor, Walter Kohler, is here for the dedication. We have more company at the house tonite; Karl, Margaret, Gail, Jimmy Radomski; Mrs. Theodore (Anna Drexler) Rose Gittings from Chicago, Harry and Agnes Kujawa. Quite a reunion." [from A. E. 1937: "Temperature is at 92° today. Joe Gernatis is at Mercy Hospital. Hurt badly in a fall in the cooling room of the Oshkosh Brewing Company yesterday afternoon at 4:30. He passed away this afternoon at 5:45. He was born at Wausau Nov. 8, 1937." (Note: must be mistake for the year of birth.) [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1939: "Took Bob out fishing this afternoon but no luck whatever. I threw my entire casting outfit into the lake but managed to retieve it after a half an hour. I told Bob he's a hoodoo. Took my first swim in Lake Butte des Morts for this year. The water was swell and we all hated to get out." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1943: "Naomi is much sunburned today. This is about all she caught yesterday, no fish. Donald worked his first full day at the store, put in 11 ½ hours and he sure was tired tonite. Took Matt Weisheipl to the cottage tonite." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1948: "Joe, Celia, Matt and Amanda Drexler are out today with the twins Johnny and Joey, and Judy. Bob Brand takes them out in his boat. The children get a big kick out of the fish, in fact they did not know if they should eat them raw or fried. 1937: "Temperature is at 92°. Took Thres to town and picked up motor from Clark & Lunds. Took the kids up for a swim. The first dip in the lake for me this year. The All Star baseball game beween the American and National Leagues is won by the Americans 8-3 at Washington, D.C." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1940: "Six o'clock Mass this morning and then to work. St. Vincent's Picnic at South Park. The weather is very nice until 6 o'clock when a bad shower dispersed most of the crowd. Mueller Potter Employees and Elmer Salzieder's delivery boys have an outing at Mr. Mueller's cottage on Fahrney's Estate. I drove out for a few hours stay in the afternoon. Joe and Annie Heip return from Cornell tonite. A reception was tendered to Rev. Charles Lange Pastor of Peace Lutheran Church in honor of his 40th anniversary in the ministry." [from A. E. 1946: "To 7:30 Mass at St. John's then to work. After a short nap took Joe-Annie Weisheipl, Aunt Lena, Thres to the Strand. See two "Jesse James" pictures. Jesse James stars Tyrone Power, Henry Fonda, Nancy Kelly, Randolph Scott. The Return of Frank James stars Henry Fonda, Gene Tierney. Stopped at the Heips for a few minutes this afternoon, met Frank Drexler's wife who came over from England about a week ago. 1937: "Brought some company for the children Joan and Marion Drexler. They are to stay for the week. John Voss is elected President of the Board of Education." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1939: "This is a sizzler for heat, temperature's officially 98°. In the evening we are treated to a severe electrical storm and a heavy downpour of rain.  Rose gets 3 letters from Bob today. I call that a record." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1941: "Drove to town for 7:30 Mass then to work until 1 P.M. Took Aunt Mary, Thres, Mary Ann, Dolores and Lawrence Kinateder to the Strand to see Bob Hope and Dorothy Lamour in Caught in the Draft also James Stephenson and Geraldine Fitspatrick in Shining Victory. We all had a treat at Joe Pollack's Fountain - Boston Nut Sundaes, Banana Splits, etc. Worked until 8:45 then back to the cottage. 1954: "Today turns out a grand day, not too hot. Back to the cottage by 11:30 took Aunt Annie Heip along, had dinner at 1 P.M. Donald and family are with us. Don and I spend the afternoon on the lake, did a little fishing also with very poor results.  Otto-Emma Lemke, Thres Fretschl out about 3 o'clock. When Don and I came in, we prepared a wiener roast. We then took a boat ride after supper - it was the first for Donnie Jr. and Debbie.  Donnie enjoyed it very much, sang most of the time. Debbie looked a bit scared. (Blogger's note: Not sure if Debbie was scared of my singing or the boat ride!) After the ride we burned rubbish by the lake. About 9 o'clock Ed and Rose Binder came over. We all played Pokeno until about 12 o'clock. Don and family left for home (our house) to view T.V. and back about 10:30 with the news that Charles Blodgett had passed away. Emma and Otto left immediately, we broke up after midnite." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1955: "Arlene is ready to come home. I suggested they bring her to our house. Mother and I would stay at the cottage, and so they did. Mary Ann stays with them. Otto is still painting the dining room at Don's. Virginia Williams is elected president of the Oshkosh School Board at the Board meeting." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1996: McCartney Miller, son of Todd and Jane (nee Potter) Miller, grandson of Don and Arlene Potter, great-grandson of A.E. and Theresa Potter, is born.

1934: "Took a drive today and brought home a little boy and girl, Donald and Marianna by name. Had dinner at home and then out to the cottage. The Fretchels are having a good time at the cottage. They were very much surprised at the increase in our family as were also Joe and Anna Weisheipl and Bill and Emma Siewert who came out to visit us in the evening. We had quite an array of fireworks for the children and they got quite a kick out of that. Kept Leonard and Robert Fretschl overnight to stay with the children." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1936: "The Rexall Train is in town from 9 to 11:45 A.M. We had a record crowd going thru the train, 6530 people in 2 ¾ hours. Went to the cottage in the afternoon had plenty of company, The Steckbauer family, The Wesiheipls, The Kujawas, The Radomskys, Anna Drexler and Lena. 15 Adults 7 Children. 1940: "A lovely day, there are no fireworks allowed in the city of Oshkosh this Fourth, the first time since the Fourth has been celebrated here. Bob Brand and Harry Janko got a lovely mess of perch this morning. Bob and Ed Fretschl tried early this morning; they only got one pickerel. Ed Fretschl Jr. and Miss Ilk are out with us for dinner. Had a fine display of fireworks in the evening for nearly 2 hours. Then more sheephead with the ladies, got to bed at 2:30 A.M. These night sessions are getting me. Joe and Anna Weisheipl take a trip to Cornell, Wis. to visit Joe's brother Frank Weisheipl." [from A. 1935: "Took Mrs. Ed Steckbauer and her family along to the cottage this afternoon. It is a hot day and we all take out first swim at the Sand Pit this afternoon. Took another in the evening. Drank plenty of water and stayed up until 2 A.M." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1946: "Ven. Sister Meralda laid to rest. Solemn Requiem by her broter Rev. Du Pont as celebrating, Mons. Bastian and Rev. Leo Ott, Deacon and Subdeacon. Donald served. Pall bearers: John Tauber, Anton Pable, Jos. Schani, Wm. Nuernberg, Louis Koelbl, A.E. Potter. About 5 this afternoon took Joe- Annie Weisheipl, Aunt Lena, Thres, Mary Ann to the cottage. Donald took Lawrence Kinsteder and the supplies. It's a lovely evening. Cards are played until 2 A.M. Got a ¼ barrel beer from Peoples Brewery for 4.94. 1949: "George Stadler's birthday. Born 1872. Had a visit with Arlene's folks this morning and then had to break the news to Mother and Mary Ann at home. Mother was not only surprised, but shocked. I called Donald home and we decided the date as August 6th is proper arrangements could be made. I broke the news to Father Alphonse Wagner this afternoon; he is also very much surprised." [from A. 1955: "Had a call from Donald at 3 A.M. that he's bringing Debbie and Donnie, took Arlene to the hospital and at 4:47 a 9 lb. 2 oz. baby boy [Mark John] is born to her, other dimensions Head 14 - Shoulders 16 - Chest 14 ½ - Abdomen 1 - Hips 13 ½ - Length 22 inches." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1957: "To 6:45 Mass - Father Milbauer - about 50 communicants. Mother entertains the S.S. Busioness Men's Auxiliary, 37 ladies came to our cottage. It's a wonderful day, a real summer's day, temperature is 86°. They all agree they had a very pleasant and enjoyable time.  After the party Don and family come with John and Lucille Felker to celebrate Markie's birthday. 1935: "Anna Baier married to Raymond Ostertag this morning at 8 o'clock. She nearly faints in church." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1936: "Moved the family out to the cottage for the weekend. Had quite a hail storm during the afternoon about 4:45. After six o'clock there was still much hail on the ground in places. On the cross road to our cottage a tree was blown over, a cow killed on the Ciscel farm and wires down. We are without lights until 10 P.M. The ladies lost 4 strait games of sheephead again. To bed at 2 A.M. Father John Haen our assistant is transferred to Kaukauna. He changes places with Father Sylvester Stern." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1949: "Donald plants a note in my Plymouth this afternoon. Well he might as well have told me. I have been suspecting something up for some time. He is to be married some time in August." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1954: "Haircuts advance to 1.25 and shaves to a dollar in the city of Oshkosh. When I was a young man shaves were 10 cents and hair cuts were 25 cents. Joe Baier and Billy Mauritz are off to see the Milwaukee Braves battle the St. Louis Cardinals, and what happens, the Braves lose 9-2. Stan Musial 2 home runs. Father Alphonse Wagner is in my office  to say good bye. He is to leave tomorrow for a vacation trip to one of the "National Shrines."
