1955: "To 6:45 Mass, temperaure's up to over 60 today. Father Victor Kandy dropped in at my office today fro a visit. Emma Baier had to be committed again this morning. She is to be pitied, but it seems she gets these bad spells every spring. I don't see how Joe stands up under this terrible strain. 1957: "To 7:30 Mass Father Milbauer. No sermon, but we have the rules and regulations on Catholic marriage. Don, Arline, and Donnie (son, daughter-in-law and grandson) are with us. 1943: "Anna Drexler's house is sold today by Elsie Broche. Anna says she could laugh and cry as fond memories come to her. Delivered to her a gallon of Mineral Oil which I think will be the last while she is in Oshkosh. Intends to move to Milwaukee with Margaret and I suppose part time with Leona. This may not be the first day of spring on the calendar, but in reality it is. Temperature is up to 76° and a nice warm breeze a blowing. I have a lovely disfigured face today, puffed eyes, swollen cheeks, do not know the cause. Did not get to Kiwanis luncheon." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1957: "Harold Van Groll called me this evening in regard to helping him with the drive for funds for the new Catholic High School. I learned from him that he has two brothers in the Capuchin Order. 1944: "Father Bastian brings Holy Communion to Thres this morning. Ed Baranowski has a heart attack this noon. Father Courtney is over to annoint him. Attended Stations with Aunt Lena at St. Vincent's. Cleaned up our fruit cellar after church. Took Thres down for a hair do at South Side Beauty Shop this afternoon. 1949: "To Kiwanis luncheon Dr. Behnke, Dr. Graeber, Sid Mertz, Herb Kummerow and myself make up the table. No program today. Clem Luck has me take a case of ball gum. If we can sell it, it will help Kiwanis boys and girls welfare fund. 1943: "To 7:30 Mass at St. John's, Mary Ann (daughter) is with me. Four hundred air corps trainees arrived early this morning from various parts of the country to take up training at  the teachers college. Dr. Ray Wagner is a busy man taking care of many of them. 1941: "Attended 'All Star' 'Harlem Globetrotters' basketball game. The 'All Stars' lose 41-38. The [Globetrotters] are sure a team of fast players. Donald (son) got the autograph of all the 'Globetrotters.' We wound up at Harold Bouchelle's." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1946: "Our stores close at noon in memory of Mr. Mueller. It turns out a lovely day. The funeral is very largely attended. The remains are laid to rest in a beautiful plot in the newer section of Riverside Cemetery. Pallbearers: Harold, Art, Norbert, Fred Baumgartner, Joe Baier, and myself. After the funeral we stop at the Mueller home for a get together with the relatives. Home at 6 P.M. 1943: "A lovely day, temperature is up to 55°. Frank and John Miller (sons of Louis Miller, deceased) are here on furlough. Frank says 9 days ago he was in Africa, and here he is home. He states treatment of the boys in Africa is excellent. The natives also are very kind. John was on two boats lost at sea. 1954: "Mary Ann (daughter) and me to 6:45 Mass. I'm a little late. Paid last respects to Elmer Rand at Milton Seefeldt's this morning. Rose Weisheipl is at Appleton tonite with her sister Mary to view their new television. Bob works nights this week. He is even learning to knit. Well, it's all in his job to learn about the different machines at Zwicker Knitting Mills. WOSH-TV closed down their radio station yesterday. Not enough financial support to keep it going." [from A. 1933: "Larry Laurence announces over W.T.M.J. that we have only until April 7th to practice deep breathing to blow the foam off the good old lager - Beer. Frank Jensen lost his wife Lydia this morning. She passed away at Mercy Hospital. Born Dec. 21, 1891. Married to Frank Dec, 1912. She was a sister to Mrs. Richard Doman, Clara." [from A. E. 1934: "Paid my taxes this morning and it cost me 2% penalty for not paying it by March 1st. Took Karl Binder's wife, Joe Hemmer, and Joe Baier out to Sunnyview to visit Karl. 1943: "To Kiwanis luncheon. Miss Kane, M.D. and psychiatrist with the State Board of Health is the speaker. Our table Dave Collin Ed Ladvina, Dave Johnson, Ray Baxandall. 1933: "Margaret Drexler's birthday today; she is 25. John Drexler's birthday also. The President must have signed the bill legalizing 3.2% beer. The whistles are blowing and people are in a happy mood. Visited Jacob Paulick Sr. this morning. His condition remains unchanged.  Louis is their home-brewer. Visited at Anna Drexler's in the evening, congratulated Margaret on being ¼ century old. Harry is here from Berlin. The roads are open again. John Mayer, prominent K.C. of Neenah passed away this morning at 2:35 at Theda Clark Hospital. Graduate of Pio Nono College of Milwaukee." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1946: "Today marks a sad day for me. Attended church service with Thres at St. Vincent's, stopped at the store about 8 o'clock, Joe Baier tells me that Mr. Mueller called up saying he had a heart attack and wished for a doctor. I immediately went to the house, found him sitting in a chair. Asked him about the doctor. He said, 'I haven't seen him.' I called to hurry the doctor. While I was on the phone Mr. Mueller collapsed. When Dr. Bitter came, he breathed for a few moments and passed away at 8:10. I have been associated with him for 37 years, and during that time he always treated me like a dad." [from A. E. 1936: "Took the family and Anna Drexler and her girls Margaret and Leona to Berlin to visit her daughter Agnes and the new baby boy 'Jackie' Kujawa. Spent a pleasant afternoon and part evening there. Dropped in to see Fred Margaret at the Drug Store. Harry showed me the homes of some of the well-to-do in Berlin. Menasha High School is destroyed by fire early this morning. Loss about $300,000." 1945: "Kiwanis Club auctioned for the benefit of "Red Cross War Fund" 10 packages (1 carton) cigarettes I donated. They cleared $26.00 on the 10 packages which is very good.  Spring begins today about 6 P.M. A lovely day welcomes its arrival." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1951: "To 6:45  Mass Father Koehn. Temperature 11° above zero. To Kiwanis luncheon. Dr. Pfefferkorn has as his guest Joseph Rieger a German exchange student from Nurenberg Germany. He is taking up agriculture. John Markel, Frank Schultz, Jay Somers are with us at table. Don and Arlene leave Debby at our house while they attend church. Shortly after they left Mother calls me to hurry home. She is having trouble getting air, and Debby is crying. After 2 brandies Mother is somewhat improved. I had fun with Debby." [from A. E. 1946: "Mrs. Minnie (F.W.) Mueller suffered what may be a cerebral hemorrhage this morning at her home. She is removed to Mercy Hospital this afternoon. To Kiwanis luncheon. Jess Pierce substituted for our regular speaker. Ed Ledvina has a birthday today, he is ___. I supply him with 2 pints "Old Forester." This evening took Thres, Mary Ann, Aunt Lena, Annie Heip to Oshkosh Civic Symphony Concert. Donald (son) plays violin with the orchestra. This morning I had a cardiogram made at Mercy Hospital by Doctor A.G. Koehler. Drs. Geo. V Lynch and Will Wagner dropped in and told the doctor to give me the works. My blood pressure is 110/70. Will have to wait a few days for the cardiogram to be developed." [from A. E. 1957: "To Kiwanis luncheon. Ben Pitcher, executive vice-president of the Chamber of Commerce is our speaker.Other guests Lloyd Buehler, Don Rothenbach, Joe Metz. Don is over to help shovel walks this morning. Had Agnes Spanbauer at the house this afternoon to interview her about working in my office. No commitment at present. 1937: " Our Sheephead Club meets at Joe Hemmer. We had wine and beer and wine and beer and finally wine and beer got the best of Hemmer. He was a pretty sick lady. I got home at 3 A.M. Bill Mauritz got the dollar." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1954: "Playoffs in the WIAA basketball tournament begin today in Madison. Our Oshkosh Indians defeat Waukesha 67-60. Larry Swanson, guard for our high school team, made 31 points. Thres and me visit Aunt Mary at Mercy tonite. Also surprised to find Hattie Bathke confined at the hospital. She is Ernie Siewert's sister. She will be 76 in April. Maxine, Ray's wife, is with her. Also stopped to see Mrs. Kavage; she is in pretty bad shape, also Amber Holmes. Sister Cornelia has a heart spell, we sended with quite a visit with Sister Iranaea." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]

1955: "Saw a nice St. Patrick's Day presentation on television this afternoon sponsored by the League of Prayer who advocated the daily recitation of the Holy Rosary in every family. We got a new "Country Sedan" Ford Station Wagon today. Of course Donald (son) will drive it most of the time, and I hope he gets good use out of it. Ann Ostertag had some prescriptions filled. 1936: "Am a sick lady today. Stomach is bad, and I also have 'Charley Horse.' Harold Mueller takes over the 'Werbke Store.' Fred Baumgartner is transferred to the North Store." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1941: "To St. John's 8 o'clock Mass with Mary Ann (daughter). A heavy blizzard begins about 7:30 wind is at high velocity. Temperature drops considerably in fact it is near zero at 9:30 P.M. with a high wind still blowing. The storm came out of the Dakotas where an 85 mile gale and 17° below zero weather brings death to many. North Dakota registers 38 deaths, Minnesota 28, New York 4, Wisconsin 3, Ohio 2, Michigan 2, Pennsylvania 1. One man died while going from his house to his barn. 1933: "The Banks of Oshkosh open today for business. They have been on holiday for 12 days. We are all glad to see them open again; business surely was poor while they were closed. 1951: "Donald (son), Arlene (daughter-in-law) and Diane (Arlene's sister) drive to Milwaukee today. It is a pleasant day, the first in a long time. Met Don Gerth there, he took them thru Marquette Dental School. They visited at Carl and Margaret Radomski's also saw Ralph Flanigan's orchestra at the Riverside. Matt Mertz is 84 today. So. 1954: "To 7:30 Hi Mass - Holy Name - Father Milbauer spoke on the Creation. My father, Stansilaus Jarosch, passed away 47 years ago today. R.I.P. I was 16 at the time. Worked 3 hours this morning. Attended stations of the cross at 1:30. Worked another hour, then a short nap. Took Thres and Mary Ann (daughter) to John Bauer where Carrie has a shower for Mary Grable. Alvina Putzer tells me she is getting over a body rash and itch. She is using Cortef Oint. Worked most of the evening also paid last respects and attended rosary for Clarence Schneider at Poklasny.  Mary Ann and self had a 'Tenderloin Luncheon' at Club 375, then out to Aunt Annie. Corky has income tax trouble, haven't we all. Home at 11:30."[from A. E. Potter's diaries]

1942: "The 'All-Stars' are recuperating from the strain of their championship game. Thres, Annie Heip and Thres Fretschel played Bingo at the Eagles last night. Thres needed one number to win 50 dollars, but the number was not forthcoming. We lost our 'Dickie Bird' tonite. He has been looking rather sickly all day. Well he got to be about 15 years old." 1947: "Governor Walter Goodland passed away suddenly last night at 10:15. Had a heart attack while preparing to go to bed. Must have been winding his watch at the time. It was found lying on the floor. Oscar Rennebohm was sworn in today as Governor." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]

1942: "The Oshkosh "All Stars" won the "World's National Basketball Championship" at Chicago last night by defeating the Detroit team score 43-41. Tonite they receive a rousing welcome as they come home about 7 o'clock. A big parade from the depot to their headquarters. The mayor and other notables spoke over the radio. Sim Menzel broke his right arm today in a peculiar accident. He was getting out of bed, his one foot became entangled in the bed sheet and he fell out of bed and broke the arm above the elbow." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1943: "Ed Winklebauer who was on the ill-fated 'Chicago' when she was sunk by the Japs, was in the store today. He lost all his belongings, was in the water for 1 ½ hours. The water was warm but very uncomfortable on account of the oil on its surface. About 56 men and 6 officers were lost out of 1100 men. Melvin Jansen is also in today. 1935: "Three armed men held up the W. T. Grant Store this morning about 8:20 just about the time the store was opened for business. They got away with about 1300 dollars. Father Coughlin makes a stirring reply to General Hugh Johnson, former N.R.A. Administrator, over the radio.  Ray Grady services this afternoon at the Konrad funeral home. 1951: "We have padded kneelers at St. Vincent's. We use them for the first time today. K.C.'s have their annual Easter Communion and breakfast at Sacred Heart today. We have 352 members present. I also attend stations at St. Vincent's this afternoon.Our annual report is also out at St. Vincent's. Back to work tonite working in the post office. 1943: "Mrs. Joseph (Anna) Schani passed away this morning at 4:10 . She had suffered a stroke. Born April 8, 1892, married Nov. 25, 1913. Survived by Joe and 5 daughters, Joan - Rita - Mrs. Anna Wagner - Marie of Oshkosh, Lucille of Chicago - 5 sons Aloysius - Joseph Jr. - Nolan - Raymond - Sylvester. She used to deliver milk to our house when we lived at 1212 Minnesota Street. I got a job for her at Julius Martin grocery when I worked there in 1908. 1947: "The J. I Case Co. strike which began Dec. 26, 1945 is finally ended and men will be back to work by the end of this week. Mrs. Louis Kuebler is laid to rest." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1956: "You know what day this is. It's pay day, that is it's the day to pay monthly bills if you wish to discount them, in our case that means a savings of about 800 to 900 dollars. A snow storm which turns into the worst blizzard we have had this winter begins around 5 o'clock this afternoon. When I took Marge Haverty home at six it was going pretty strong. 1950: "Well, it's here, the day of our Grand Opening, a beautiful day, lots of flowers, plenty of help, Norm Brown, Florian Peck, Ken Spersky, Bob Fisher. Art and Mrs. Look, Ed and Mrs. Worm from Fond du lac are over. Took Norm and Sybelle to Town Grill for dinner." [from A. E. 1952: "City wide Holy Name Communion at St. Peter's this morning about 300 present. Father Hogan has the service. Worked this morning and part of the afternoon. Also to Stations at 1:30 at St. Vincent's. Father Milbauer. Attended "Oshkosh Civic Symphony" tonite. Doris Heisler is the High School Student chosen to be soloist. She sings very well, is a bit nervous. Agnes Hazen is taken sick last night at a dinner at Little Chute. Art took her to Mercy Hosp." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]

1942: "At 12:40 A.M. I have a call from Henry Kieckhafer telling me someone had broken into our Oregon St. store. After investigating I find that both cash registers had been rifled, one of about 35 dollars, the other about 5 dollars. No merchandise seems to be taken. Well, we're lucky. The safe has not been touched.  I get to bed at 2:30 this morning. Well, up again at 5:15, shave, and attend 6 o'clock Mass at St. John's." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1953: "To 7:30 Mass with Holy Name Society. Then to work. This afternoon we attend opening if the new Winnebago County Hospital a 2,300,000 dollar job. It is modern in every detail. It can accommodate 300 patients. We then stop to visit Joe and Annie Weisheipl. Don and Arlene attend the marriage course. I'm back at the store to make out orders. Harry and Agnes Kujawa drop in about 9 o'clock for a short visit. Georgi M. Malenkov, 51 years old tank and plane production expert succeeds Joseph Stalin."  [from A. E. Potter's diaries]

1940: "Blance Kollross is divorced from Ed Kollross this morning. Thres attend the Eagles Bingo Party tonite. South Side Cub Pack 44 have a "Pot Luck Supper" at 10th St. Methodist Church basement today. Our family attend as "Donald" (son) belongs to this pack and is to be transferred to Boy Scout Troop 18 St. Vincent's. Mayor Oaks and Mrs. waited on table, and that is service." [from A. E. 1948: "Lavatory drain finally opened this morning [Blogger's note: the drain had clogged the previous day.] Mary Ann's birthday; she is 18. She has Joan Mauritz, Dolores Kinateder, Emma Siewert here for dinner. Mary Ann takes Joan to the _____ this afternoon. Delores stays with us. Tonite we attend the Civic Symphony concert at the Recreation Hall. Donald (son) is one of the violinist. Took Anna Weisheipl, Thres Fretschl, Emma Siewert, Joan Mauritz with us. 1939: "Mama Potter's second attempt at St. Vincent's Christian Mothers Society as President. A big card party is planned for the latter part of April. Great Britain and France have given the victorious Franco government in Spain formal recognition. This unofficially ends the civil war in Spain which began July 18, 1936." [from A. E. 1956: "To Kiwanis luncheon, it is sports day; we have the athletic teachers such as John Nevers, Ronnie Nord, also the Hi School Basketball seniors and juniors from the new Webster Stanley who are presented with the sportsmanship trophy by Jim Bruins. Attended evening service and served as Honor Guard with the 4th Degree. Ted Bouchette was our leader. Father Ivan spoke on "Deep Humility" and thus ended another 40 Hours Devotion." [from A. E. 1942: "Well my Plymouth came back today after Joe Weisheipl Sr. had it for 11 days making 371 miles. Kenny Kunde is in town on a furlough, he is located in New York. He takes Naomi Mueller out tonite. Moscow Russia is bombed tonite by the Germans. After 12 o'clock tonite no typewriters are allowed to be sold or delivered. Anton & Mary Paulick 741 11h St. are taken to Jefferson Barracks near St. Louis by Eddie Paulick to see their son Bobbie who is in the radio naval division. 1947: "Joe Baier is back on the job this morning. I complete our figures for inventory this evening. Attended St. Vincent's tonite with Thres (wife) and Mary Ann (daughter). Rose Weisheipl is back on the job this morning. Sisters Irene and Phillipa from Mercy Hospital are over about some candles for priests in Germany." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1955: "To St. Vincent's at 7 A.M. Mary Ann (daughter) goes to work in spite of not feeling too well. It's rather cold, damp, and cloudy today. Took Thres and Mary Ann to Columbus Club for shrimp and lobster tail. Met George & Lavine Haverty, Clarence & Florence Westphal, Anna Ostertag, George and Mrs. Procknow, Dan & Mrs. Hildebrand. Learned that Ann Ostertag had a hemorrhage last Saturday, lost considerable blood. So we take a drive tonite to see Ray and family. Ann is sitting up looking quite pale, must have X Rays taken. 1940: "To 7:30 Mass and then to work, rested two hours during the afternoon back to work at 5 P.M. Sacred Heart Congregation have open house from 2 to 5 this afternoon at their beautiful new church. Joe Weisheipl Jr. plays special organ selections, Clara Daws sings. Thres (Ma Potter) is busy at St. Vincent's Keno Party tonite."[from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1954: "Mary Ann (daughter) begins Lent by going to "Holy Mass." She tells us she is going every day if she wakes up in time. Attend church services tonite and I have quite a time getting there. My chest pains are very severe and to make matters worse no place in church to rest. Had to stay in back; lucky Thres found a place with Donald (son) and family. Little Donnie (grandson) spied me in back and had to tell the people about "Papa" out loud. Don and family are with us after church until 11:15 P.M." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]

1939: "A new Holy Father is elected today. Eugenio Pacelli is chosen as Pope. He takes the name Pius XII. He was Papal Secretary for years. Today happens to be his birthday. He is 63 years of age. He will be spiritual ruler of 331,500,000 Catholics throughout the world. He was a visitor in the United States in October and November, 1936. He is the 262nd Pope."  [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1954: "To Kiwanis luncheon, Chuck Wittmack Jr. talks on the New Hi School, "Shall we remodel the one on the old site at a cost of 2 million or build an entirely new one on a new 20 acre site for 3 million?" A good presentation. Thres plays cards tonite at Emma Lemke's with Thres Froetschl and Annie Heip. I attend Mother of Perpetual Help Devotion. After work stop in at Marge Haverty's for a short visit. Robert A. Mueller (F.W.'s brother) died at 5:30 this morning at 222 Ceape. Born June 15, 1882. Married Hattie Petzold June 14, 1910. [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
1955: "We attend the concert of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Paul Paray directing, at the South Park School Gym. I enjoyed Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 in A Major. It took 35 minutes to play it. After the performance Mary Ann (daughter) and I to Lowell Robbins to the Mueller Potter sales meeting conducted by Gale Robertson. Gale gave the folks some pointers on the Spring Work Bunch Drive. 1953: "To 7:30 Mass St. Vincent's. Mama is with the Council of Catholic Women at St. John's where they have their annual day of recollection. After services this afternoon we visit with Joe and Annie Weisheipl, then over town for a stop at the North Store and then to Sitters to pay our last respects to Theresa Wolf.
