Diary of Alfred E. Potter December, 1945

01.  Saturday: To church at 7 Oclock                 Com.  Donald – Mary Ann
02.  Sunday: To 730 High Mass with Thres, at St. Vincents.  Took Thres Fretschl with us tonite to Weisheipls.  Annie has completed 63 years today and we are here to celebrate.  Joe Jr. and Marge just dropped in before we did with a box of candy.  Home again at 130 AM.       Com.  Father John Nuernberg
03.  Monday: Thres is not feeling any too well today.
04.  Tuesday: [T] Took Harry Ferry as guest a Kiwanis luncheon.  Jessie Pierce spoke on “Let us look at Conscription.” Gave a fine talk, he is against it.  It turned out to be a free for all.  Quite a number of the boys are for conscription or at least military training during peace time.  Dick Bloch one of the owners of Drugan Book buys the building 153 Main St. occupied by Dorothy’s Smart Shop.
05.  Wednesday: Took a drive to Milwaukee with Thres and Mary Ann.  Its the first fair day in over a week.  The ladies shopped at Gimbels and Boston Store.  Lunch at Fritz Gusts McClurgs paid for it.  Met Al Lers at Gust’s.  Stopped it Mutual – Yahr Lange – McClurgs and Bertrams.  Drove out to visit the Drexlers at 3245 South Ninth only Romy is home.  Wait about ¾ hour, but the folks did not get home from shopping, so we had to drive home without seeing them.  Home at 8 Oclock Sharp, then to work at the store.
06.  Thursday: Had a flat tire this morning on the Plymouth.  View the remains of Frank Reif this afternoon at Poklasny’s.  Met Mary Pable Meidl there, had not seen her in a long time.         MO Frank Reif
07.  Friday: First Friday 7 Oclock at St. Vincents.                    Com.  Donald – Mary Ann
08.  Saturday: To 7 Oclock Mass St. Vincents              Com. Frank Reif

16.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Johns with Thres and Mary Ann.  We are very busy at the store.  Packages are coming in at the parcel post window at a pretty good rate.  Temperature is about 5° below this morning.  Margaret Hanson works today.               Com Matt Baier
17.   Monday: Official reading 10° below this morning.  Ed Fretschl is laid up today with a cold.
18.  Tuesday: [T] Official reading 13° below this morning.

23.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Vincents, then to work.  Its just another busy day.  Joe Baier and Margaret Hanson stop in to help us.
24.  Monday: Well this is the windup and I am glad.  Its been the best and worst holiday business we had.  Best financially, worst as far as help is concerned.  Dropped in to see Father Bastian tonite for a few minutes which was stretched to nearly two hours and it surely was an enjoyable evening.  Josephine – Madeline and Father Ott also were with us.  Stopped at the Nuernbergs on my way home.
25.  Tuesday: [T] To midnight Mass St. Vincents and it is really tough driving.  To bed at 3 AM.  Father Ott had the midnight service.  He also had a very sermon.  It snowed most of the night.  I had plenty of shoveling to do.  The Kujawas could not come down, they also were snowed in.  Donald spent the night at Louis Koelbl’s.  Visited the Weisheipls this afternoon.  Joe Sr. is in gay mood and very happy.  This evening took them to the Strand to see “Kiss and Tell.”               Com. Self
26.   Wednesday: Judge Henry Hughes dropped in this afternoon.  He rather liked his Christmas present.  Aunt Mary spent the afternoon and evening at the Weisheipl home.  Thres – Mary Ann and self spend the evening with Aunt Lena.  Bob Zemke has dinner with us.  He was Donald’s overnight guest.
27.  Thursday: Had a call from Sister Aquilina today, and what do you suppose, she is in bed at Mercy with heart trouble.  She was confined the 22nd of this month and did not get the opportunity to spend Christmas with the other Sisters.  Received a Christmas Greeting from Sister Linus today.
28.
29.
30.  Sunday: [T] To 730 Mass St. Johns.  Father Murphy preaches on faith.  Then to work, it turns out to be a very busy day.  Mary Ann took Joan Mauritz to the Strand Theatre to see “Kiss and Tell.” They have the supper at the Mauritz’s.  Harry – Agnes – Mary – Johnny Kujawa from Berlin come to spend their belated Christmas with us.  With the presents they also brought some venison steaks.  After supper of tender ham, we played poker rummy.  The folks left at 10.30.                Com.  Aunt Mary.
31.  Monday: The last day of the year is also a very busy one.  It turns out to be the noisiest we have had in years, and a very happy one in most families where the boys are back.  F.W. Mueller celebrates his birthday with a family gathering.  He is 72.  We have our usual New Years Eve company Joe – Annie Weisheipl –Ed – Thres Fretschl – Aunt Lena.  Hours also was a noisy celebration.  The folks made good use of the mistletoe.  Aunt Annie was pretty noisy too, but finally fell asleep while the rest were still going strong.  Lunch at 3 A.M. we get to bed at four oclock. Finis.
