Diary of Alfred E. Potter April, 1941

01.  Tuesday: Visited Grandma Baier, she is sitting up in a chair and looks much improved. Today is election day, but a very quiet one. Had to get Donald out at 4.45 A.M. Her serves for Father Bastian at Sunnyview. Allis Chalmers plant is closed. The strikers riot for 3 hours, about 50 are hurt. Gov. Heil is unable to get Federal Troops to help keep order.
02.  Wednesday: The Potters and the Heips visit at Fretchels.  Sheephead is the game and I won 7 cents.  That’s the longest I ever worked for that amount.  It is a pre–party for Mrs. Theresa Fretchel, her birthday is next Sunday.

04.  Friday: To Mass at 530 A.M. Donald serves.           Com.  Father John Nuernberg
05.  Saturday: Theresa Fretchel has a birthday, she is 54.
06.  Sunday: To six oclock Mass, then took Ed Fretchel to the cottage.  Herb Mathwig shows him home to prune our fruit trees.  It is a lovely day.  The Sleet did much damage to our large trees near the boathouse, large things were broken off.          Com.  Theodore Drexler
07.  Monday: Visited with Father Bastian this afternoon.  According to his version, communism will have a very strong hold in this country within 5 years.  I hope he’s wrong.  Anna Weisheipl gets a permanent wave at Gerdia Mosers today.

09.  Wednesday: Took Ed Fretchel – Donald and Robert to the cottage to clean up the trees.  Considerable damage had been done by the sleet storm.

12.  Saturday: Donald and myself attend Fishermans Party at South Park Gym.  128 prizes are given, we did not get any.  Herb Mathwig gets a “Heddon Rod,” Harold Klemz, “Pflueger Akron Reel,” Wm Pable “A Reel.” Weather turns warm temperature is up to 80° and it feels like summer.  Thres and Mary Ann attend the Movie “Men of Boys Town” featuring the Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney.
13.  Sunday: To six Oclock Mass, to work at 8.20 A.M.  Had a shower of rain this morning, and it surely put natural color into the grass.  Weather clears this afternoon, temperature is around the 75 mark.  Ma Potter – Anna Weisheipl and Thres Fretchel each won 3 dollars at St Vincents Bingo.  Joe Weisheipl and myself took a drive to Neenah after work tonite.  Looked over a new Mozain Front next to the Jandrey’s store.  Karl Kieckhafer is 44 today.          Com.  Peace – Help –Longevity for family
14.  Monday: Art Mueller and Fred Baumgartner attend the Rexall Convention at Milwaukee.  Father John Nuernberg and Anne are in town.  Father states he is feeling pretty well.  Father Joseph Rauch when drops in at the store.
15.  Tuesday: Had a most pleasant surprise today.  Sister Virginia from St Johns Hospital, Tulsa Oklahoma dropped in for short visit at the store this afternoon, but mum’s the word, she does not want everybody to know she is in the city.  She is looking well and happy.  She now has a desk job at the hospital, which is more in her line of work.  Mr. Mueller – Norbert and myself drive to Berlin this afternoon.  Dropped in to see Harry Kujawa and look over the Merchants Farmer’s Bank of which he is cashier.
16.  Wednesday: This is a day of rain, and the temperature is at 42°.  Joe – Anna Weisheipl – Ed – Thres Fretchel are over tonite to play a game of sheephead.  I won the five cents all evening, Thres lost 45 cents Joe Heip went heavy on the winning side.  Ed Fretchel had one of his usual outbursts about the draft, at lunch time.  We cleaned up a large can of popcorn during the evening.  I’d took the folks home at 1.45 A.M.  Phil Lyman became up a fight yesterday, a nice 8 ½ pound baby girl and to hear Phil tell about it she’s a prize.
17.  Thursday: I feel as if I had taken a chologoy and am somewhat tired too.  Guess I can’t take it anymore.

20.  Sunday: First Communion Day at St Vincents, and it is a cold day.  To 730 Mass and then to work.  Attended “Time Theatre” this afternoon with Joe and Anna Heip.  “Road Show” featuring Adolph Menjou Carole Landis, John Hubbard Patsy Kelly, and “The Bank Dick” featuring W.C. Fields are the pictures.
21.  Monday: Father Bastian, Father Hummel leave for Florida today.  T.C.  Mc Cullough, veteran merchant tailor passed away suddenly Saturday at midnight at his home 40 1/2 West Irving.  Born Jan 8 – 1868 near Belfast Ireland.  My father knew him well.
22.  Tuesday: “Ray Noble” and Orchestra are at the Oshkosh Theatre.  I heard him at the “Palmer House” in Chicago last fall.
23.  Wednesday: Henry J Klemmer passed away last night 11 Oclock at Mercy Hospital.  Born March 10 – 1886.  He was a schoolmate of Mrs. Potters.  F.H. Zebe, Director of Band and Orchestra Work in the Oshkosh Hi and Public Schools passed away suddenly this morning at the Jebe Cottage and Plummer’s Point.  Karl Kieckhafer and Karl Reiss are over to check over my Life Insurance program.  Thres and south attend the “Strand,” see “The Ziegfeld Girl” feature and James Stewart – Judy Garland – Heddy Lamarr – Lana Turner – Tony Martin – Jackie Cooper –Charles Winninger – Ed Horton.

25.  Friday: To Dr. Wm Wagner is this morning, for a physical examination.  Well he didn’t find anything wrong, and that’s worth something.  View the remains of Henry Klemmer and F.H. Jebe at Fiss and Bills.          M.O.  Henry Klemmer
26.  Saturday: Roger Allmers and Eileen move to 1012 Ohio St about Pete Muraski and next to Baiers.  Took a drive to the cottage this afternoon, took off the storm windows and put them away for the summer.  Weather is lovely, temperature is close to the 80 mark.
27.  Sunday: To six oclock Mass, Father Duerr reads the Mass and it is over at 6.35. St. Johns is now on summer schedule 600 - 730 - 900 - 1145.  Worked until 1 P.M. Took in Phil Laffey's orchestra practice this afternoon at First M. E. Hall. Donald plays second violin, about 16 young people rehearsed.
28.  Monday: Ed Fretchel begins cleaning up our flower beds at the house.  Harold Ferry W.D. Rep.  Is in town.  Mr. Mueller, Mr. Ferry and myself drove to Harold Hansens, Marquardt Corners to have lunch, and what a luncheon, it turned out to be of great big delicious steak.  Mrs. Hansen surely knows how to prepare them.  Took a few casts for fish at Mr. Mueller’s summer cottage but neither of us had any luck.

30.  Wednesday: Temperature rises again today to about 84° in the shade.  View the remains of Cap. Pfeiffer and     Galow.  Attended funeral services for Cap this afternoon.  Rev. Noah Bess read the Masonic Ritual.  Jerome Warner begins cleaning walls at our house today.  Joe Baier is not feeling very well for the last week.  His stomach is bothering him considerably, maybe his ulcer is not entirely healed.

Diary of Alfred E. Potter March, 1941

01.  Saturday: Harold Mueller takes over the Mueller Potter Paint and Wallpaper Company.
02.  Sunday: Attended 730 Hi Mass at St. Vincents and then to work.  And what did I do this afternoon?  I slept like a log until 4.45 and then back for more work.
03.  Monday: Sam Fleming is laid to rest this afternoon.  Rose and Edward both have a cold but are on the job.  Rose Weisheipl has dinner with us today.  Karl and Margaret Radomsky drop in on us tonite.  They came in by train, the roads are too bad for driving.  Joe Weisheipl Sr. gets back on the job this morning, after being laid up about a week and a half by a bad cold.
04.  Tuesday: President Roosevelt is at the helm of our country 8 years today.  Visited Grandma Baier today.  She would like to get out of bed.  May try this afternoon.  Karl and Margaret loan our Chrysler today to visit Harry and Agnes Kujawa at Berlin.  We attend the South Side Business Men’s Ladies Auxiliary card party tonite.  Bill Siewert wins the table prize.  Theresa Fretchel is down with a cold. 
05.  Wednesday: A lovely day.  Rose Weisheipl's cold is breaking somewhat.  She tells me she took five straight shots last night and that should help some.  Edwards cold is hanging tough and he talks very hoarse.
06.  Thursday: Witnessed a very good basketball game tonight the “All Stars” playoff with the Firestone Team.  It is an overtime game the “All Stars” winning 47 to 41.  Lefty Edwards and Bob Carpenter are playing their best Leroy 18 points – Bob 14 points.  Ed Weisheipl’s cold is so bad, he could not take in the game, and that hurts.  The Heip Sr’s and Thres and myself dropped in the George Buchanan tavern after the game.  It is my first visit there since George took it over.
07.  Friday: Dropped in to see Grandma Baier, she is about the same altho she seems to be growing weaker.  Our Mary Ann has a birthday, she is eleven.  Dolores – Lawrence Kinateder and Frank Hein are over.  She takes them all to the movie in the evening.  Dr. Ray Wagner is called to Fretchel’s.  Theresa’s cold is quite bad, seems to have much pain in her ears and head.          Com.  Father Wm Mortell
08.  Saturday: Rose Weisheipl tells me she slept little last night, her cough bothered her much.
09.  Sunday: To six oclock Mass, then to work.          Com.  Stanislaus Jarosch
10.  Monday: Joe Kollross passed away this afternoon at 130 at the Veterans Hospital – Wood Wis.  He was there since Dec 26th 1940.  Born in Oshkosh Feb 27 – 1888.  The Oshkosh “All Stars” beat the Sheboygan “Red Skins” 53 to 38 at Sheboygan tonight in the Shaughnessy Playoff for the Crown in the National Basketball League.  Had a visit with Father Bastian tonite.  We also looked up Anna Weisheipls birth records.  We find she was born Dec. 2 – 1882 which made her 58 years of age last birthday.
11.  Tuesday: The Sheboygan Redskins are here tonite for return game with the Oshkosh “All Stars.” Game ends 44-37 favor “All Stars.” After the game the Heips visit with us until 1 A.M.
12.  Wednesday: According to fairly accurate information Dr. M.C. Haines did $22 000 business (gross) and collected $19 000.  This is indeed an excellent showing, if true.
13.  Thursday: Have nice semi annual appointment with Dr. Norman Kleinschmidt, the dentist.
14.  Friday: Joe Kollross is laid to rest this morning.  Services at St. Vincent’s.  Took a drive to Fond du Lac this afternoon with Mr. Mueller.  Looked over and bought some Easter and Summer Merchandise from Ray Grace.  He is displaying the Mc Clurg Line at Armory E.  Dropped in to see the new Wilbur Lolis drug store.  It is beautiful, represents and expenditure of about $50 000.  Dropped in to say hello to Ed and Fred Worm.  Dr. William Wagner has a birthday.  According to Dr. Ray his brother he was born March 14 – 1893

16.  Sunday: To St. Johns 8 Oclock Mass with Mary Ann. A heavy blizzard begins about 730 wind is at high velocity. Temperature drops considerably in fact it is near zero at 930 P.M. with a high wind still blowing. The storm came out of the Dakotas where an 85 mile gale and 17° below zero weather brings death to many. North Dakota registers 38 deaths, Minnesota 28, New York 4, Wisconsin 3, Ohio 2, Michigan 2, Pennsylvania 1. One man died while going from his house to his barn. It seems the strong wind and heavy dust and snow suffocated people.
17.  Monday: Father Michael Drexler dropped in at the store tonite for a visit.  He tells me he is very busy.  I am a busy chauffeur today.  Temperature is 5° below at 730 when I take the Children to school, then to the Post Office with a $2700 report, phoned the Heips from there, Joe Sr. says “I’m froze up,” so I hurried there to take Marion and Rose to work.  Marion must be there at 820 A.M. sharp.  In the afternoon to Rose Mauritz, Joan and Billy home to 1428 – 6th St. and Mrs. Mauritz (Bills Mother) to her home from there.  At 9:30 PM Naomi Miller to her home 222 Ceape and 10:00 PM Ed Weisheipl and Roger Allmers to their homes on 6th and Reed Streets.
18.  Tuesday: Visited Grandma Baier this morning, she sat up a bit, but is very very weak.
19.  Wednesday: Charles Ress, Peanut Vender and Shoe Shiner at Herman Jansen Barber Shop is 51 years of age today.

21.  Friday: Special Meeting Stockholders Mueller Potter.  Fred Baumgartner is elected a new director to take the place vacated by Harold Mueller.

23.  Sunday: To 8 Oclock Mass at St. Johns Foresters Court 510 and Juniors receive Communion in a body Donald is with us.  Father Courtney has a sick call after mass, find later that he was called to Robert Lutz 1270 Knapp to administer last Sacraments.  Thres attends Sacred Heart Bingo, wins a Broom.          Com.  St. Joseph’s Honor.  Happy Hour of death.
24.  Monday: Executive Committee Red Cross Meets today at Court House.  Rev. Hiram Mansfield has a birthday, he is 66 but looks to be about 55.
25.  Tuesday: Visited Grandma Baier, she is sitting up but is still very weak.
26.  Wednesday: Attended “All Star” “Harlem Globe Trotters” basketball game. The “All Stars” lose 41-38. The Darkies are sure a team of fast players. Donald got the autograph of all the “Globe Trotters.” We wound up at Harold Bouchelle's.

28.  Friday: The Weisheipls lose the pet “Tom Cat” I gave to them last year.  He died of poisoning.  They all miss him very much.  Had Armin Knoop out to the West Store to make plans for a new structure to be built on the present site.
29.  Saturday: This is Norbert Mueller’s Birthday, he is 42 and incidentally it is the anniversary of the Chas Otto Store fire in 1914 which also caused much damage at our store.  Attended Boy Scout Indoor Rally at Recreational Hall tonight.  Berlin for Rather Green Lake County Waushara – Winnebago Waupaca counties are represented.  Had Joe and Annie Heip with us.  After the rally they were with us at home until 12.45 A.M.
30.  Sunday: To six Oclock Mass.  K C Easter Communion at St. Vincents but I did not get there.  Opened the store at 8 A M which is unusual for me.  Art Mueller is back on the job after being laid up with a bad throat for 2 ½ days.  The weather is lovely, temperature is at 52°.
31.  Monday: Strikers are writing at the Allis – Chalmers Plant this afternoon.  They are driven back by a heavy armored police car and tear bombs passed out by Sheriff Jos. Shinners and officers of the police department and deputies.

Diary of Alfred E. Potter February, 1941

01.  Saturday: Gave Joe and Anna Weisheipl a treat by taking them to the Hammond - All Stars Basketball game. Neither one had witnessed a basketball game before. It was a walkaway for the All Stars 60-36, although Hammond was the first team to beat them this year.
02.  Sunday: Had to get up early for six oclock mass. Sold candles at St. Vincents before 730 Mass. Joe Baier and Ed Fretchel were on the job as usual. Donald takes Ed Weisheipl’s place as clerk at the store and he does very well. Thres - Aunt Mary visit Grandma Baier and Anna Drexler this afternoon after church. Grandma Baier is moved back upstairs to her room. Thres goes to St. Vincents cash Bingo tonite and wins nothing. I work until 11.30 P.M.
03.  Monday: Christian Mothers Society St. Vincents have a “Guest night” meeting.  About 170 attend and “Ma Potter” – “The President” is well satisfied.  Edward Krueger “pioneer automobile dealer” in fact the oldest in Oshkosh passed away this afternoon at Mercy Hospital.  He had been ill for some time.  Born in Germany April 16 – 1868.
04.  Tuesday: Jos P. Stür, Secretary and General Manager of Peoples Brewery Co.  Was found dead in bed this morning.  He was in our store yesterday afternoon to have a prescription refilled.  He was born in Chicago July 14 – 1880.  Visited Grandma Baier this morning.  She is better satisfied in her own bed upstairs.  Picked up Ed Weisheipl this noon.  He tries a half day of work.  The last day he worked at the store was Jan 26th.
05.  Wednesday: Ed Weisheipl is back on the job.  He is feeling much improved.

07.  Friday: Up early this morning 4.45.  Donald serves 5.30 Mass for Father Duerr.  Joe Stür is laid to rest.  Services at St. Vincents at 10 oclock.  Com: Joe Stür
08.  Saturday: Thres and South go to the All Star – Chicago Bruins game.  The Allstars win 45-31.  It was a slow draggy game in the last half.  It is a beautiful night out.  Karl Samer and Marie Verwiel make a hurried trip to Milwaukee to be married.
09.  Sunday: To six Oclock mass this morning.  Took Mary Ann and Dolores Kinateder to Sacred Heart for services.  They have their breakfast at Aunt Anna Weisheipl’s.  Took Donald – Frank Hein –Lawrence Kinateder to St. Mary’s for services.  The Holy Name and also Boy Scouts received communion there.
10.  Monday: Another lovely day.  Douglas Hunt from Wautoma drops in at the store this afternoon.  Harry Ferry United Drug Salesman is also here today.
11.  Tuesday: Donald’s Birthday, he is 13 today.  He did not get as many presents as usual, but he did get practical gifts.  Visited Grandma Baier she is still in bed, but thinks she will try to get up for a little while today.
12.  Wednesday: Teddy Gittings (Chicago) is five years old today.

15.  Saturday: Took Thres to the All Star – Firestone Game tonight.  The All Stars suffer their first defeat on their home gym 49-43.  Rose Weisheipl and her friend Anne Falle have a bad place to witness the game from the top row on the stage and its plenty hot up there.  They are pretty well wilted and tired when the game is over.
16.  Sunday: To six oclock mass.  Leona Drexler is 31 years of age today.  Her mother has a little party in her honor.  The Harry Kujawas –The Starr’s are here from Berlin.  She receives some nice presents among them up Bulava Wrist Watch from a fellow by the name of Roman?  (Don’t know his last name (It is Polish).  He must be working fast, as she does not know him so very long as yet.  We have a light blizzard.  I forgot to mention that we had supper at Anna Drexler’s.  Thres goes to St. Vincents Bingo and I work until 12 midnight figuring inventory.
17.  Monday: Marion Weisheipl is home laid up with a bad cold.
18. Tuesday: Donald takes part in the first aquacade in Oshkosh, which is held in the new swimming pool of the South Side Junior Hi School. And its a cold night, when he comes home it is 10° below zero.
19.  Wednesday: Marion Weisheipl is back on the job after a two day layoff with a cold, but now with Joe Sr. is down with a cold.  It is about 12° below zero this morning and the Weisheipl auto is froze up, and will not start.  Cook and Brown deliver two tons of coal for our house today.  I’d just learned that it was 13° below zero this morning – officially.
20.  Thursday: Grandma Baier is 92 years of age today, but she must spend the day in bed. Dropped in to see her and wish her a happy birthday. Roma Bauman made up a nice German poem in her honor. Temperature is still below zero this morning, about 5°. Anna Weisheipl is surprised by the ladies of Sacred Heart Kitchen Workers this afternoon. About 50 are present, says she, but a recount produced only 17. Well, 17 can make plenty of noise.

22.  Saturday: Attended “All Star” Detroit Basketball Game.  It was very exciting and for a time it looked as tho Detroit would win.  “Zadawski” Detroit’s tall center made 21 points but was taken out of the game during the 3d quarter for having 5 fouls.  Putnam really won the game for us in the last quarter shooting baskets.  Final Score 59-57.
23.  Sunday: To six oclock mass then to work.  Took the family to Strand Theatre this afternoon.  “Western Union” in Technicolor is on, starring Robert Young –Virginia Gilmore –Randolph Scott –Dean Jagger.  “Blondie goes Latin” is the comic.

27.  Thursday: Thres goes to Eagles Bingo and wins nothing, but she says the chicken at Harold Bouchelle’s is very good.
28.  Friday: Meeting tonight at the South Side Store as to disposition of Paint Store. Frances Lamb is with us.  Dropped in to see Grandma Baier, find her about the same, her eyesight is very good.  Former King Alfonso of Spain passed away at a hotel at Rome Italy this morning – age 54.  Sam Fleming passed away this morning at 2.35 at Mercy Hospital.  He has been train dispatcher from the South Side Northwestern depot for a good many years.

Diary of Alfred E. Potter January, 1941

01.  Wednesday: Took our company home at 330 this morning.  Ed Fretchel left at 300.  He was a pretty sick lady.  Attended 10.30 Hi Mass at St. Vincents, then to work.  It rains most of the day, so we stay home this afternoon and take a rest.
02.  Thursday: Aunt Mary and Lena Baier to the washing at Joe Weisheipl’s.  They take along our washboard.
03.  Friday: Donald serves 5.30 Mass this morning.  It is quite cold out only two above zero.  Grandma Baier goes to church this morning.  You just can’t keep her home.  Com.  Stanislaus Jarosch
04.  Saturday: Took Donald to see the “Oshkosh All Stars” play the “Goodyears” Akron Basketball team at the South Side Junior High School Gym.  It is a cold night but the Gym was crowded.  It turns out to be a very exciting game.  The All Stars winning in the last few seconds to play, score 35-33.
05.  Sunday: To 730 Mass this morning.  This is the Feast of the “Holy Name.” lovely day with plenty of sunshine.  Mother goes to St. Vincent s Bingo at night and wins 150.  I worked until 10.30 and different team home, I had an emergency call from Glenn Wollangk, to push his car home.  Installed at the 15th & Iowa Sts.       Com.  Katherine Holzbauer
06.  Monday: Stopped at Weisheipl’s to see how Anna is getting along.  She manages to do some of her work, but still must rest of good share of the time.  Aunt Mary has a cold.  Thres is again elected President of the “Christian Mothers Society” at St. Vincent’s.  Annual Meeting of the Mueller Potter Stockholders tonite.  All officers re-elected, which means I retain my job as Secretary – Treasurer.
07.  Tuesday: Visited Grandma Baier.  She is a little better this morning.
08.  Wednesday: Took the Fretchels to the Weisheipl’s and had our annual Sheephead Game there.  Joe and Marge were there for short visit.  Rose Weisheipl goes bowling –Marion takes a dancing lesson – Eddie spends his time after work and entertaining Ed Fretchel, and Matt is bartender.  Got home at 2 A.M.  We bring the Heip Family Wash home with us.
09.  Thursday: Thres and Aunt Lena to the Heip Family Washing at our place this morning.  Aunt Mary is unable to help, her cold is still bothering her.

11.  Saturday: Took Donald to another Basket Ball Game.  The Chicago Bruins play the All Stars.  The gay man’s 43 to 36 All Stars.  This is their 21’st straight win.
12.  Sunday: To six oclock mass and then to work.  Managed to put in eleven hours.  Had run behind in some of my work due to inventory.
13.  Monday: Art Mueller’s little daughter Catherine is taken to Mercy Hospital.  The doctors Bitter and Hugo have not diagnosed her ailment.  Thres takes Anna Drexler to Mercy Hospital this morning.  X Ray pictures are to be taken to help diagnose her case.

15.  Wednesday: Art Mueller takes Katherine home from a hospital.  We visit at Ed Fretchel’s tonite and the Heips are there also. Thres wins 5 ½ and I win 6 ½ games of sheephead.  We played 21 games.

18.  Saturday: Attended “All Stars” Firestone game with Donald, an exciting game with the “All Stars” on top with a score of .  Sam Gould quits business today.  He has been running a fruit and vegetables stored near our South Side location for about 25 years.
19.  Sunday: To 9 Oclock Mass this morning, then to work.  Visited Grandma Baier this afternoon.  She is still in bed but looks fairly well.  When Thres and I got home we find we have company.  Harry - Agnes – Jackie - Mary Kujawa, Anna and Leona Drexler are here and have supper with us.  Donald fixed Jackie up in a boy scout suit, and he surely likes that.  Thres goes to St. Vincent’s Cash Bingo and wins 150 and I work until 11.45 P.M.

22.  Wednesday: Anna Weisheipl is here with her family washing.  We have Edward and Rose Weisheipl over for the noon meal.  In the evening I take some flash pictures of the family, it is my first experience.

24.  Friday: Thres and Anna Weisheipl go shopping for a wash-machine.  Edward Weisheipl is 23 years of age today.
25.  Saturday: Took Ma Potter to the “Sheboygan” and “All Stars” Basket Ball game.  This is the first game she ever witnessed and what a thriller it was nobody’s game most of the time.  At the end of the fourth quarter it was tied up 36-36.  Five minutes overtime were played to break the tie.  It looked bad for the “All Stars,” Sheboygan forging ahead 40-37.  It ended however by a score of 45-40 favor of the “All Stars.”
26.  Sunday: Attended six oclock mass today.
27.  Monday: Edward Weisheipl’s day off today.  He is around with his chum Ed Paulick but complains of a sore throat.
28.  Tuesday: Anna Weisheipl buys a new wash-machine today.  It is and “Eazy,” and is she happy!  She had been washing by hand for about 4 months.  Thres is out to help her to the first washing.  We stay to have dinner with them.  Ed Weisheipl is laid up today with his throat, so Rose and I get early dinner.  Jim Daugherty at the Security Bank has been laid up for several days with the sore throat.  Donald serves mass for Father Bastian at Sunnyview which means I have to roll out at 430 A.M. to get him up.
29.  Wednesday: Lena Baier had a birthday yesterday.  She is 64.  The Daughters Rose and Ann are over with their children, and Aunt Lena is glad when they get there and also glad when they leave.  Grandma a Baier had a heart attack this morning.  I dropped in to see her this noon.  She is downstairs on the front room cot.  She is very weak.  Bill and Emma Siewert – Thres and me bowl 4 games at the Kinateder alleys tonite.  I used Raymond Siewert’s bowling shoes and nearly broke my arches.  This is the first time I bowled since last winter Scores 103-121-128-105.
30.  Thursday: Visited Dr. Wm Wagner at Mercy Hospital this morning.  He is a patient there with a wrenched back, from a fall.  Had Rose Weisheipl over for dinner.  Edward Weisheipl is still laid up, and Jim Daugherty is back at the bank.  He also had a bad throat.
31.  Friday: Visited Grandma Baier this morning.  She is doing as well as can be expected.  Ed Weisheipl is still laid up.  He lost his voice this morning.
