Diary of Alfred E. Potter February, 1939

01.  
02.  Thursday: Up early this morning to sell candles at St. Vincents.  Aunt Mary is finally down with her cold, she surely hated to give up.
03.  Friday: Mrs. Ed Wolf is married today to Harry P. Mikon of Milwaukee.  Tonite is one of the most beautiful winter nights I’ve ever seen.  The Moon is at its full.
04.  Saturday: Emma Siewert who has been down with a cold for over a week is a little better.
05.  Sunday: Snow this morning and milder.  Christian Mothers have nice turnout for Communion, Mama Potter, new president is well satisfied.
06.  Monday: Phil Lyman dislocated his shoulder in a fall from his bicycle.  Mama Potter conducts her first meeting as President of the Christian Mothers Society.
07.  Tuesday: Joe Hemmer and Bill Nuernberg dropped in tonite at the store after work and we sample some K Taylor.  Will Joe Hemmer is in bad shape when we go home.  Joe Baier and myself finished inventory today.  Margaret Klemmer –Mrs. Joe Cater – Mrs. Paul Procknow are here for a game of cards.  Mrs. Anna Ostertag entertains and a shower in honor of her daughter Margaret.  Della (Mrs. Kirk) also entertains at her home.  We are invited to Mrs. Haverty’s this evening but could not be there.  Announcement is made of the approaching marriage of Marge Haverty to Joe Weisheipl Jr.  It is to take place April 20th.
08.  Wednesday: I spend a quiet evening at home.
09.  Thursday: Radio reports come in with special bulletin that the Holy Father Pope Pius 11th passed away at 5.31 A.M. Rome time.  This means 10.31 tonite our time, Friday A.M. Rome time.  It is raining tonite with temperatures above 35°degrees.  Mailed packages to Teddy Gittings, Chicago, tonite for his birthday which will be Sunday.  Music pupils at St. Vincent’s give a recital this afternoon.  Donald plays several members.  Mama Potter attends.
10.  Friday: This streets and walks are one mess of ice this morning, temperature is at zero, quite a drop overnight.  The radio and newspapers are busy making announcements of the demise of the Holy Father Pius XI born Achille Ratti.  Temperature at 11.15 tonight is 8° below with a heavy north west wind and clear skies.  I took a night off tonite as business is slow.  Thres would not venture out with her car today, so I took her and Anna Heip to the Oshkosh Theatre.  They would like to win 1500 dollars.
11.  Saturday: Hour Donald’s birthday today, he is eleven and getting to be quite a young man.  He received A Harmonika –Chinese Checkers Game – Fountain Pen – Sky Flyer Kite – Shirts – Pajamas.
12.  Sunday: To Six Oclock Mass this morning, then to work.  Carl and Marg Radomski are in town and also Harvey and Agnes Kujawa from Berlin.  We stop with them at Fritz Weisheipl’s Tavern after I get thru working.  Had lots of fun.  Thres and Anna Heip joined us after the Keno Party at St. Mary’s sponsored by the C.Y.O. (Catholic Youth Organization) of Oshkosh.  Aunt Mary gets out today for the first time in about two weeks.  She attends Mass at St. Johns.  Teddy Gittings birthday, he is 3 today.
13.  Monday: Visited Anna Drexler for a while, she is not so well.  Visited her mother Mrs. Meisinger for a while.
14.  Tuesday: His Holiness Paul Pius 11th is laid to rest in a crypt below St. Peters Basilica beside the tomb of the late Cardinal Merry Del Val.  Workers preparing the tomb for His Holiness made an important fine when a spade hit a stone slab underneath St. Peters.  Archaeologists identified the discovery as the pavement which formed part of the early St. Peters built by Constantine, Christian Emperor of Rome about 326 A.D. when the basilica was built over the grave of the Apostle Peter, the First Pope.  Richard Andrashko passed away at Mercy Hospital this morning at 9.40.  Born in Germany Jan 1 -1873.
15.  Wednesday: Gilbert Botz and Margaret Ostertag are united in marriage at St. Vincents.  View the remains of Richard Andrashko tonite at the Konrad Funeral Home.
16.  Thursday: Leona Drexler has a birthday, she is 29.  Frankie Hein, Donald’s friend also has a birthday.  George Scattergood is in town.

18.  Saturday: This is a beautiful day, temperature about 46°.  It is Ed Fretchel’s day of tough luck.  In the morning he tries to open a box with wires around it.  He applies the hammer steps on it and lets it go, the hammer promptly backfires and hits him in the ankle; Result one very much swollen ankle, in the afternoon he drops a large ribbed funnel and it breaks to pieces.  San Francisco International Fair opens today.  F.W. Mueller leaves for the “Spa” at Waukesha.  He is to learn the various diets for diabeties.
19.  Sunday: To six oclock Mass as usual, then to work. During the afternoon took Mary Ann to Sacred Heart to Childrens Keno Party, visited Raymond and Anna Ostertag for a while and was taken thru their new home, which is complete with the exception of painting the walls. Also visited Ed Fretchel, his foot is better today altho he did not get to church this morning.
20.  Monday: Grandma Baiers Birthday today.  She is 89 and still getting around pretty well.  We all help her celebrate, when I get there at 7.15 she is ready to go to bed.  She believes in the old saying “Early to bed and early to rise.” The Heips and Thres Fretchel invite themselves over for the evening.  After I get home at 9.45 from work we played 5 handed sheephead and I win about 5 games.
21.  Tuesday: I attend stockholders meeting Druggist Service Bureau Inc at Milwaukee.  Many of the druggist or clerks are laid up as there is an epidemic of flu in Milwaukee.  After the meeting had a nice visit with Margaret Radomski and Harry Wolf.  Carl and Frances are working.  Arrived home at 11.10 P.M.
22.  Wednesday: This is a cold morning, about 3° below zero.  Another retort burns out at the store.  This is the second one this winter.  Ash Wednesday today, we attend evening service.  Father Bastian’s Sermon “Do Dead Men Live.” He proved they do.  Joe Baier and Ed Weisheipl help John Marn celebrate his birthday last night and they both look at this morning.

26.  Sunday: To six oclock mass this morning the temperature is again about 2° below, but it warms up much during the day.  Took a drive to the cottage this afternoon, who drew only as far as Glotz’s driveway.  There is much snow in the country and some of the side roads are very icy.  Everything is OK at the cottage.  Worked most of the day.

28.  Tuesday: Attended card party a Roseleaf Hall 17th and Oregon Auspices South Side Businessmens Club. Ma Potter is rather lucky. She wins $1.45 in cash and 12 Bottles Peoples Beer. We took the Heips with us.
