Diary of Alfred E. Potter March, 1940

01.  Friday: Mrs. Louis Reichenberger are has one of her legs amputated to the knee at Mercy Hospital.  She has been suffering for a long time.
02.  Saturday: Bill Haidlinger is hit on the corner of 16th & Iowa streets about 930 tonite.  His car is overturned and Bill is taken to the hospital.  The driver of the other car drove away without identifying himself.
03.  Sunday: To 730 Mass and then to work, rested two hours during the afternoon back to work at 5 P.M. Sacred Heart Congregation have open house from 2 to 5 this afternoon at their beautiful new Church. Joe Weisheipl Jr. plays special organ selections, Clara Daws sings. Thres (Ma Potter) is busy at St. Vincents Keno Party tonite.
04.  Monday: Frances Lamb is over this afternoon to get our income tax reports out.
05.  Tuesday: Visited Grandma Baier, she is looking and feeling pretty good.
06.  Wednesday: Visited Bill Haidlinger this afternoon.  He is still in bed, but is feeling pretty good.  Bill and Emma Siewert visit with us tonite.  Spent an enjoyable evening, Party breaks up at 130 AM.  Had a letter from Rose Gittings today.  She is in bed with a bad cold.
07.  Thursday: Blanche Kollross is divorced from Ed Kollross this morning. Thres attend the Eagles Bingo Party tonite. South Side Cub Pack 44 have a "Pot Luck Supper" at 10th St. Methodist Church Basement today. Our Family attend as "Donald" belongs to this pack and is to be transferred to Boy Scout Troop 18 St. Vincents. Mayor Oaks and Mrs. waited on table, and that is service.

09.  Saturday: I have a bad cold today.  Thres attends the 127th Infantry Bingo party at Armory B tonite and wins 150.
10.  Sunday: K C Annual Communion (Easter) at Sacred Heart Church this morning.  I do not attend because of my bad cold.  My left eye is affected quite badly.  Fred Fellner stops in at the store I have not seen him for years.  He lost his wife “Christine” only a short time ago.  Thres Attends St. Johns Bingo Party tonite.
11.  Monday: Dr. Hugo tells me to have a certain tooth pulled and my eye will be better.  Thres attends “South Side Business Mens Auxiliary” Meeting tonite.  Rose Weisheipl has a bad cold today.
12.  Tuesday: Well my eye is a lot better today.  Maybe I will not have to have that tooth pulled after all.  Mr. Jacob Jungwirth is laid to rest this morning.  Visited Grandma a Baier, she is feeling pretty good.  Thres – Lena – and Thres Polier visit Mrs. Louis Reichenberger and Mercy Hospital, also Mrs. Kellerman at Pohojka’s.
13.  Wednesday: My eye is very bad this morning, but gets better during the day.
14.  Thursday: Ed Weisheipl in Roger Allmers attend Rexall Clerks Convention at Milwaukee, they use my Plymouth to make the trip.
15.  Friday: Finish all of the Income Tax Reports and mail them out.  Ed and Roger get back on the job this noon.  Anna Weisheipl gets paid “Permanent” this morning, she will be all dolled up for Easter.

19.  Tuesday: This is a beautiful day.  Had quite a snowstorm tonite.  Ed Weisheipl and Alois Kinateder furnish a lot of amusement talking on our corner after “Ollie” locked up his tavern.  They lasted from 1.15 to 145 in the snowstorm.
20.  Wednesday: Art Post begins drilling well as our house this morning.  Ed Steckbauer are comes home from Milwaukee.  He is feeling much better.  Had been at the Veterans Hospital at Milwaukee.
21.  Thursday: Joe Hemmer is operated for appendicitis this morning.  Gilbert Botz and Margaret Ostertag are now “Papa and Mama” its a “girl.”
22.  Friday: Joe Baier has a double hemorrhage this morning at 2 Oclock.  He is taken to Mercy Hospital, the doctors Ray and Will Wagner take care of him.  He has stomach ulcers.  Our stores close from 12 noon to 3 oclock.  I visited Joe Hemmer and Joe Baier.  They are both doing pretty well.  Hemmer is aching for a bottle of beer, Baier does not get anything to eat for 48 hours.  Met Mrs. Louis Reichenberger in a wheelchair, she is feeling pretty good, expects to go home next week.  Mrs. Alvina Hauert is taken home from the hospital this afternoon.  Met Lena Baier and Emma Baier at the hospital.

24.  Sunday: To Six Oclock Mass this morning and then to work for the rest of the day, taking Joe Baier’s plays.  It’s a very cold Easter day.
25.  Monday: Joe Poklasny is in to see me today on important business, he needs 400 dollars immediately.  Is going back into the “Furniture Business” April 1st.
26.  Tuesday: Visited Joe Baier and Joe Hemmer at Mercy this afternoon.
27.  Wednesday: Inspected the new “South Side Junior Hi School” this afternoon and it was time well spent. The Weisheipls lose their “Tommy Cat” tonite. He died of poisoning. Attended the Strand Theatre last show tonite. “Virginia City” is the feature picture.
28.  Thursday: Joe Hemmer is removed to his home from Mercy Hospital.  Norman Brown has another auto accident, he turns over on Hiway 10 on his way to Manitowoc at 830 this morning.  He is not hurt.  This is at least the third turnover he has had with cars and has wrecked them all.  He himself has always been lucky.  Donald Bludau passed him but kept on driving, evidently not knowing Norman.
29.  Friday: Visited Joe Baier he is getting better every day, expects to go home shortly.  Had a short visit at our store with Ed Steckbauer he is looking much improved.  Visited Rose Miller also at the hospital.  She is suffering from another attack of Gallstones.
30.  Saturday: Joe Baier’s furniture is moved back to his old home 1016 Ohio St. from Mellman’s Flats 1112 Oregon.  It will be “Home Sweet Home” for Joe when he leaves the hospital.
31.  Sunday: Joe Baier is removed to his home this morning, in the city ambulance.
