Diary of Alfred E. Potter April, 1940

01.
02.  Tuesday: Stopped to see Joe Baier, he is getting somewhat out of sorts, having to stay in bed.
03.  Wednesday: We are having and all day’s rain today, which is doing much good.  Father Michael Drexler brings down his “Girl Basket Ball Team to visit with us and have a little party.  It turned out to be quite a big party.  They left for Kaukauna about 1 A.M.
04.  Thursday: Our birthday sale begins at the store (32 years in business). Another gloomy looking day with some rain.
05.
06.  Saturday: This is the last day of our anniversary sale, we give away about 3000 Carnations.  Visited Joe Baier for short time.  It turns out to be a beautiful springlike day.
07.  Sunday: Tried something different today.  Attended six oclock mass and then to work all day.  Come home only for dinner, and then worked right through from 12 noon to 9.15 P.M.  We are quite busy and the time passed quickly.  This is also a day of rain, that is from 8 AM on.  Ed Fretchel goes to our cottage and removes our dock posts from the lake, in spite of the rain.  Ma Potter attends “St. John’s Bingo” tonite and wins $3.20.  Stopped at Ollie Kinateder’s after work.
08.  Monday: It is still raining today until about 5 P.M.  River level rises 2 inches, but is still below last years level at this time.
09.  Tuesday: Germany invades Denmark and Norway today.  The Danes immediately surrender but the Norwegians offer some resistance.  The capitols, Copenhagen in Oslo are both taken.
10.
11.  Thursday: Ed Weisheipl loses one of his wisdom teeth day.  Art Mueller’s brother-in-law _____ Krause drops in to see the family for short visit.
12.  Friday: Visited Joe Baier this morning he is sitting up and looking much better.
13.
14.  Sunday: Attended 9 Oclock Mass, worked until 1:00 and from 5 to 6.  Took a drive about town with the Weisheipls, have them over for supper.  Attended Time Theatre “OH Susanna” a collar movie starring Don Ameche as “Stephen Foster,” Al Jolson and Andrea Leeds.
15.  Monday: Big Bowling match at Ollie Kinateder's alleys tonite between the North and South Side Mueller Potter Drug Stores. Well, the South Side Store wins three straight and also the total number of pins by 252. North Team: Elmer Salzieder, Leon Geiger, Laurence Churchill, Tom Gallagher, Fred Baumgartner. South Side: Art Mueller, Al Potter, Ed Fretchel, Ed Weisheipl, Roger Allmers. Rooters for the teams Rose Weisheipl, Naomi Mueller. I bowled 148-114-131. The girls left us in the middle of the last game. Walter Ostertag is hanging around Rose, and takes her home. Maybe something is going to happen, or maybe it is just a date.
16.  Tuesday: It is not so easy to get out of bed early this morning, but after working a short time I get pretty well limbered up and feel fine.  Elmer Salzieder is very downcast in the dumps today because his team lost last night and what hurts it was for a quarter barrel of beer.
17.  Wednesday: Rose Weisheipl is so tired today, O yes, she attended the “Schnickel Fritz Band” dance at the Eagles last night.  Visited Joe Baier this afternoon, he is improving and would like more to beat then he is allowed.  We are having quite a blizzard this evening and nite, and a heavy coat of snow covers the ground.  Maybe this will be the last snowstorm this spring.
18.  Thursday: Witnessed Mrs. A.D. Rychman’s will this morning.  Charles Nolan is the Attorney.  She tells us, she was held up last night.  The robber obtained 75 cents.  Mrs. Rychman is very much shocked.  Dropped off a bundle of magazines at Anna Drexler’s.  She is not as well as she has been.  Dropped in to see Joe Baier for few minutes.  Today is a beautiful day.  The snow will not last long at this rate.
19.
20.  Saturday: The first drowning of the season, occurs off Homer Fahrney’s Estate on Lake Butte des Morts.
21.  Sunday: To six oclock Mass and then to work.  Dinner at 11.30 back to work at 1200 and then worked straight thru until 10 P.M.
