Diary of Alfred E. Potter January, 1940

01.  Monday: “Happy New Year” is right.  I get to bed at 5 A.M.  Attended High Mass at St. John’s 10 A.M.  First time I see Father Leo Courtney officiate at Mass.  Temperature is

03.  Wednesday: Begin taking inventory at the South Store this morning.  Visited at Harold and Eva Mueller’s tonite.  Walter Dodd and Leone are there also.  Got home 2.30 AM.  Temperature is 7° below when we get home.
04.  Thursday: Had an acknowledgement from Father John Nuernberg today.  He tells me we shared in a Sanctuary Window at St. Joseph’s in Wautoma.  Also heard from Rev. Hiram E. Mansfield, a very nice letter.  Archbishop Stritch of Milwaukee is elevated to the Archbishopric of Chicago, succeeding George Cardinal Mundelein deceased.  Viewed the remains of Mrs. Pauline Sitter tonite at Fiss & Bills.  Mother to Greg – Matt and Tony Sitter.
05.  Friday: Getting along pretty well with inventory.  Visited at Joe and Emma Baiers tonite.  Had enjoyable evening.  Got home at 130 A.M.  Temperature was 10 below this morning, 7° below tonite when we get home.  Mrs. Pauline Sitter is laid to rest this morning.

07.  Sunday: Attended six oclock mass, took Ed, Carl Fretchel and Matt Weisheipl to cottage to take out dock.  The undies is frozen so thick, they could not remove the posts.  Driving is bad going out, sleet on the windshield turns to snow and in fact this is the first snow this winter to cover the ground.  Visited at the Weisheipl’s tonite with the Fretchel’s.  Thres Fretchel wins 9 games of sheephead.  Father Bastian entertains the Doctors Wegner – Lynch and the Ed Marheines at dinner this evening.
08.  Monday: Taking inventory in the basement today.  A beautiful day after the snow.  Thres is reelected President of the “Christian Mothers Society” of St. Vincents Congregation.
09.  Tuesday: Took the prescription Room today which cleans up most of our inventory.  We are having more snow and it looks much more like winter.
10.  Wednesday: Busy paying bills today.  Visited with Ed Fretchel’s tonite, the Heips were there also.  Home at 1.15 A.M.  Had a midnight call to go to the store, for an ice bag for Mrs. Paul Sitter.  It is sleeting out tonite.  Driving is bad.  Mrs. Joseph Baier and daughter Fay visit at our house this afternoon.

12.  Friday: Received news that Harry Kujawa lost his job at the Berlin State Bank.
13.  Saturday: I get a lot of exercise tonite shoveling sidewalk, we have a nice blizzard.
14.  Sunday: The Blizzard is on all day today.  Attended six oclock mass as usual, did some more shoveling.  The blizzard gets worse during the day and at night traffic is pretty well tied up.
15.  Monday: The City is trying hard to get the roads in shape for auto traffic.  Charles Rauch funeral services at 9 AM today.  Pallbearers Matt Mertz – Ed Binder – Charles Heinzl – Frank Norkofski –Frank Schroeder and myself.  Aunt Mary comes down with a bad cold.
16.  Tuesday: The weather is much colder today 13° below this morning.
17.  Wednesday: 8° below this morning.
18.  Thursday: 20° below this morning.  Did a lot of taxi work today.  Oscar Schneider passed away this morning of a heart attack.  Born in Black Wolf Jan 16 – 1884.  Temperature is 16° below at 10 oclock tonite.
19.  Friday: Was out at 4 oclock this morning temperature is 10° below.  Ed Weisheipl states it is 20° below at 3 AM at Aloys Kinateder’s tavern, all but one car are stalled.

21.  Sunday: To six oclock mass, then to work.  Visited Grandma Baier, she is not able to get out.  She thought I had forgotten about her but I assured her I have not.  Harry Kujawa – Agnes and children are here from Berlin, learn from him that he resigned at the Berlin Bank, his resignation to take affect February 1st.  After work I stopped at Anna and Leona Drexler and who do I find there but Father Michael Drexler and his show players from Kaukauna.  They all had a fine time.  The party broke up at 1 A.M. I get to bed at 2 A.M.  Thres is busy at St. Vincents Keno.
22.  Monday: Oscar Schneider is laid to rest at Riverside this morning.  I donated our family car, had Mrs. Ben Luecke, Mr. Rudy Wiener - Mrs. Barlow, and Mrs. Alb. Guetzkow for passengers.  Visited Anna Weisheipl, she is laid up since yesterday morning with a bad cold, it has affected her hearing somewhat, and of course she could not played Keno last night.
23.  Tuesday: 9° below zero this morning.  Visited at Joe Jungens for short time this evening.  The work about the house is getting to be a hardship for Eva.  Her mother fell this morning and sprained her ankle.  Ma Potter is bothered with gastritis.  Mary Ann says to her “My Mother!  You surely have your hardships.”
24.  Wednesday: Finish taking inventory at the West Store this afternoon.  Edward Weisheipl is 22 years of age today.  Attended meeting of the Oshkosh Apostlate this evening.  Thres takes on the duties of a visitor.  Took Ed Weisheipl out for lunch and refreshments after work.  Stopped at Fritz Weisheipl’s. Joe Weisheipl Sr. is laid up today.
25.  Thursday: Carl Fretchel goes to Chicago to take final tests in order to join the “Marines.” Anna Weisheipl is a book that, her hearing is still affected.  10 years ago today, brother-in-law Ted Drexler passed away.
26.  Friday: A nice day with temperatures above 12° above zero.  Rose Weisheipl is with us for dinner.  Dr. Norman Kleinschmidt gives my teeth the semi-annual once over.  One needed a small filling.
27.  Saturday: Mrs. John Embs (Gustave’s mother) falls down the seller stops and breaks her ankle.
28.  Sunday: Six oclock mass as usual, then to work, temperature is 6° below.  Lena Baier’s birthday, she is 63.  Thres –Anna –Mary and Thres Fretchel have a surprise party for her.  The girls Rose, Ann and their families are also there, Mrs. Ostertag bakes a big cake.  Joe Weisheipl Sr. goes to hear Rubinoff at the Merrill Junior High.  I cleaned up the porch this afternoon, back to work at 5 P.M.  After work visited with Anna and Leona Drexler.  Thres, Annie Heip and Thres Fretchel go to St. John’s Bingo Party tonite.  Mrs. John Embs passed away today of shock incident to her fall yesterday.
29.  Monday: Weather is moderating and it looks like it may last for a few days.
30.  Tuesday: Visited Anna (Mrs. John Drexler) 1210 – 9th this forenoon, she tells me a Elizabeth is in a hospital in Milwaukee, under observation.  They think she may have a cyst on her pelvis.  Father Michael Drexler phones this noon and tells us that Betty was operated at 8 Oclock this morning.
31.  Wednesday: Visited at Mrs. John Drexler’s (Anna) tonite.  She and Caroline come back from Milwaukee this afternoon.  They found that Betty did not have a cyst after all, but a bad appendix and a tipped womb.
