Diary of Alfred E. Potter October, 1939

01.  Sunday: Sacred Heart Church is dedicated today.  Many priests attend.  The Bishop also confirms a large class of young folks while he is here.
02.  Monday: Had quite a time a John Marx’s tavern tonite.  Joe Baier – Roger – Eddie Heip and myself.
03.  Tuesday: Phone Bob Gittings at Chicago to come up and try out for a new job.
04.  Wednesday: Bob is up here and gets a trial run tonite to Chicago for the Wisconsin Fox Valley Transit Company.  Had supper at the Veteran of Foreign Wars Hall on 17th Street.  They are having a three day Bazaar.  They served a nice turkey supper.
05.  Thursday: Learned that Jack Marx’s tavern may be for sale.  Wired Karl Radomsky and Margaret.  They are up tonite and Karl look the place over.
06.  Friday: Attended First Friday Communion this morning.
07.  Saturday: Our “Sunshine Club” has a surprise party for Joe Baier and our house tonite and it is a complete surprise to him.  Present were Mr. – Mrs. F.W. Mueller – Harold – Eva – Art – Margaret – Norbert – Esther Mueller – Fred – Loretta Baumgartner – Ed – Thres Fretchel, -Edward Rose –Joe – Anna Weisheipl, Naomi Mueller – Roger Allmers –Elizabeth Bohlson -    Hetue – Emma Nigl – Lena Baier and Joseph Baier, Leon Geiger – Tom Gallagher.
08.  Sunday: Attended 5 O’clock Mass at St. Peter’s this morning.
09.  Monday: Bob Gittings is in today and very nervous.
10.  Tuesday: Joe Baier and Emma Nigl are married.  We attend dinner and supper.  Joe and his bride left on a honeymoon at 10.30 P.M.
11.  Wednesday: Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt (Mrs. Franklin D) is 55 years of age today.
12.  Thursday: Left for Chicago this morning, with Norman Brown and Fred Schlintz.  Picked up Mark Whitrock and Walter Anderson in Milwaukee.  Bought merchandise from McKesson’s this afternoon.  Had dinner at the Empire Room at the Palmer House.
13.  Friday: Had dinner at “Ireland’s” this evening.  They have a seafood of all kinds.  We then started on our journey home.  Arrived about midnight.
14.  Saturday: Back on the job with plenty of work.  Mr. and Mrs. Al Beck 11th & Ohio, are married 25 years today.
15.  Sunday: This is the first day of St. Vincent’s Bazaar.  Thres is very busy.
16.  Monday: Ed Spees is in town.  Meeting at our Roll Call headquarters.  Joe Baier gets back this morning.  He moves into the Mehlman Apartments this afternoon.
17.  Tuesday: Have a big (kick off) meeting at the American Legion Club house for our Annual Red Cross Roll Call.  Ed Spees is here.  The American Legion are going to assist us this year.  Showed movies, introduced two new directors Mrs. Lydia Pfeiffer and Pauline Kleinschmidt.  Jess Sitter has an increase in the family.  Mercury is down to 23° this morning.
18.  Wednesday: Another Bazaar Night at St. Vincent’s.  Drove to Milwaukee this morning.  Brought Rose and Teddy Gittings home.  They were at Karl and Margaret’s over night.

20.  Friday: Drove to Madison to attend State Red Cross Roll Call Conference at Lorraine Hotel.  Had Rev. H. Mansfield –Earl Fuller – Ellen Luchsinger along.  Mr. Fieser “National Vice Chairman” is the main speaker.  About 850 persons registered.  It rained all the way home and my cold is very much aggravated.  Wrote to Karl Radomsky and Margaret in regard to Doman Tavern.
21.  Saturday: Bob Gittings Dad is in town.
22.  Sunday: End of St. Vincent’s Bazaar.  It looks like a success.

24.  Tuesday: Had a letter from Karl and Margaret this morning.

26. Thursday: Visited Brother in law John Drexler today.  He is in bad shape, slowly losing his mind, he did not recognize me.  Thres – Mary –Lena –Annie visited him this afternoon.  He did not know them.  I visited Grandma a Baier, she is doing fairly well.  Dropped in on the Heips, hadn’t seen Joe for some time.  Frank Taylor Sr. from Great Falls Montana dropped in to see me, to say hello.
27.  Friday: Visited John Drexler again this morning, he is a little violent for time, but calms down shortly.  He recognizes us this morning.  Bob Gittings and his Dad, come in tonite.  Forty Hours Devotion begins at St. Vincent’s this morning.
28.  Saturday: Bob Gittings pleads guilty to grand larceny before Judge Luchsinger this morning, sentence is deferred until Friday Nov 3d.  He is out on bond signed by myself until then.  Karl and Margaret blow in tonite from Milwaukee.
29.  Sunday: Six oclock mass this morning, then to work.  Visited out to Brother in law John Drexler’s for short time, brought him into our house for a while.  Father Michael Drexler and Matt Drexler come in to take him back home.  Visited at Anna Drexler’s.  Forty Hours Devotion ends at St. Vincent’s tonite.  Harry Kujawa – Agnes and family, Karl and Margaret are over to Anna’s tonite.
30.  Monday: Had meeting of the Mueller Potter Drug Club tonite.  Had nearly 100% attendance.  Mary Ann was not feeling well this morning and had to stay home from school.
31.  Tuesday: Bill Webbles and “Harold Ferry” (Shrimp) were in town this evening to give us a little preview advertising on the “One Cent Sale.” Burst Snow of this season, it snows for ½ hour this morning.
