Diary of Alfred E. Potter May, 1939

02.  Tuesday: Temperatures are 29° this morning.  Rather cold for this time of the year.
03.  Wednesday: Peter begins work on our porch, this morning.  Took a drive this afternoon to Green Bay.  Dropped in at Shaughnessy’s Drug Store, Matt George Huseby there.  Matt Weisheipl cut our lawn the first time this year.  Ed Fretchel took off the storm windows.  Took in Sacred Heart Bazaar this evening, but won nothing.  Anna Heip won a dollar.

06.  Saturday: The season’s first drowning occurred last night about 11 Oclock at the fish stock (called Dicks (Richard Hannes) Dock at the rear of the plant of the Oshkosh Truck Company.  Leo Spatt Jr.  24 years of age of 2121 South 14th St. Sheboygan was the victim.  He was one of the party of 4 young men from Sheboygan who left there about 7.30 in the evening to fish here.  Mr. Spatt was fishing with two lines and one moving to a new location slipped and fell into the Fox River.  His body was recovered after an hours dragging.
07.  Sunday: Attend six oclock Mass with Donald when. Took Ed Fretchel, Robert and Donald to the cottage, then to work. Thres, Mary Ann and Aunt Mary attend Sacred Heart Bazaar in the afternoon. Thres attends St. Vincents Keeno in the evening. We also viewed the remains of George Mauel in the afternoon. He looks natural. We are treated to two cloud bursts today - one this afternoon and one this evening. We also find hail with the rain. I was caught in the evening storm, had to stop driving for a while at Koehler's Gas Station on the West Side.

10.  Wednesday: Judge Henry Hughes is at Rochester Minnesota at the Mayo Clinic to undergo an operation for a dislocated vertebrae which has cost a long time ago from overlifting.
11.  Thursday: Visited Grandma a Baier today.  She is up but still very weak.  Lena Baier is cleaning house.

14.  Sunday: This is a great day for Mary Ann. She makes her "First Holy Communion." It is a fair day. She does much visiting. Sick Aunty Drexler, Aunt Lena Baier, Ray Ostertag and family were there - Uncle John Drexler, Aunt Ottillia Drexler, Joe Drexler family, Amanda Drexler, Joe Weisheipl family.

18.  Thursday: The new south wing of Mercy Hospital is blessed today by Bishop Rhode of Green Bay.

20.  Saturday: Annie Heip wins a dollar at Ten – o – win at the Oshkosh Theatre.
21.  Sunday: Six Oclock Mass as usual.  Took Ed Fretchel – Donald and Robert to the cottage.  Holy Name Rally at Kaukauna.  Many people from Oshkosh attend.  We visit with Wm and Emm Siewert tonite after work.  Bill and Carry Glidden are there.  We play 6 hand sheephead.  I win 42 cents, got home at 130 A.M.
22.  Monday: The Dionne quintuplets are presented to King George and Queen Elizabeth of England, at Toronto Canada.  It was one of the strangers audiences ever granted by the British Monarchs.  The Quins saluted the Queen with 5 moist kisses and she forgetting royal custom and tradition leaned over, put her arms around each of them and kissed them back.
23.  Tuesday: Attended meeting of the Red Crosse Executive Committee.
24.  Wednesday: Herman Wachholz has a birthday he tells me he is 50 years old and expects to have a big party tonite.  I am flirting with a cold.
25.  Thursday: Attended Safety Conference at Sheboygan representing the Oshkosh Chapter Red Cross.  Drive over with Earl Fuller and Harold Mueller.
26.  Friday: George Mertz and Ed Fretchel put in the dock at our cottage.  It is a hot day.  Temperature is around 90°.
27.  Saturday: Am so hoarse today, I can hardly speak a loud word.
28.  Sunday: Attended six Oclock Mass, met Harry and Agnes Kujawa.  They are driving to Milwaukee to visit Margaret and Karl Radomsky, and take along Leona and Anna Drexler.  They Dionne Quintuplets are 5 years of age today.  Their personalities are showing definite developments.  Emilie is the comedian –Marie the most warm hearted – Annette, the most determined –Cecile, the most precise –and Yvonne, the bossiest.  The little girls have an estimated fortune of $850 000.
29.  Monday: The family and moves to the cottage for Memorial Day.  They take the Fretchel’s along.
30.  Tuesday: I do a lot of work with the scythe and get a healthy sunburn and does it ever burn, ouch! my poor head. Donald and Robert Fretchel get some nice sized perch. The day is hot, temperatures about 90°. Bob Brand introduced me to Mr. Fisher from Stevens Point. Mr. Fisher is acquainted with Palmer Taylor. I relieve Joe Baier at the store for supper. Joe and Ann Heip take Aunt Mary to the cemeteries and also out for a few beers. Joe and Ann come to the cottage at night, Ann is in a very talkative mood. Postmaster General Jim Farley is 51 today.
31.  Wednesday: Another hot day, temperatures are up to 93°. I visit Anna and Leona Drexler. They had a pleasant visit with Margaret in Milwaukee last Sunday. Also visited Grandma Baier. She is able to be out and expects to go to Church tomorrow. Donald is hurt while swimming at the sand pit (Cook & Browns).
