Diary of Alfred E. Potter September, 1939

01.  Friday: Dropped in at John Drexler’s this noon.  Father Michael is elated over his new appointment as assistant to St. Mary’s Parish at Kaukauna
02.  Saturday: Germany, according to Radio reports from Poland, is bombing Warsaw, the Polish capital.  Quite a number of people have been killed.  Berlin and London England are in darkness at night to prevent air raids.  Germany is waging what is called “undeclared war” on Poland.  Temperatures are up today at 9 P.M. 72° outside and the moon am a shining.  Temperatures in our house or 82° downstairs 90° upstairs.
03.  Sunday: Attended six Oclock mass and then to work.  England and France declare war against Germany.  Germany already has been waging war against colon.  Thres takes the family out to the cottage.  She takes Ed Fretchel Thres and Robert along.  The Heips come out too.  This is a terribly sultry day temperatures are at 95°, but it feels more like 105.  Had a terrific electrical storm this evening and I’m caught in it.  Had to take shelter side of the Omro Junction School until the storm let up.  I lost 12 straight games of sheephead tonite.
04.  Monday: This turns out to be a beautiful day.  Ed Fretchel Robert and our Donald go fishing, get 17 perch.  The Heips are over in this afternoon.  I retrieved my loss at cards.  I worked at the store about 7 hours today.
05.  Tuesday: Had to get someone to do the ironing for the Jungen Boys.  Mrs. Otto Langkau has agreed to do this work for us.
06.  Wednesday: Visited Eva Mueller at Mercy Hospital this afternoon.  Took a drive to the cottage in the evening.  Visited Anne – Leona Drexler and Geo Meisinger.
07.  Thursday: Visited Grandma Baier this morning.  She is as well as can be expected.
08.  Friday: Visited with Rev. Oberleiter this morning, talking over the Red Cross Roll Call.
09.  Saturday: Joe Baier has a birthday, he is 35.  Well, Joe should be getting married pretty soon.  He has a sweetheart, ____ Nigl.  Thres and I attend the Oshkosh Theatre tonight.  Saw two good pictures Carole Lombard – Cary Grant –Kay Francis in “In Name Only,” also “Charley Chan at Treasure Island”
10.  Sunday: Six Oclock Mass this morning.  Then to work.  Visited at John Drexlers this afternoon Caroline and Elizabeth our home.  Rest of the family are gone to Father Roche’s at Francis Creek.  Father Michael Drexler also gets acquainted with his new pastor Father Roder at Kaukauna.

12.  Tuesday: The war is raging in Europe, Germany is making headway into Poland.  The English have lost quite a number of ships thru German mines and German Submarines.
13.  Wednesday: Acted as honorary pallbearer at the funeral of William Levy, others Joe Kronzer, Greg Sitter, Francis Spellman.  John Andrashko laid to rest.  Thres attends.  Took drive to Milwaukee this afternoon, with Thres Polier and Ma Potter.  Did some buying at McClurg’s.  Dropped in aunt Druggist Service Bureau.  And is it ever hot.  Temperature is 97°. Had supper at Fritz Gust.  Visited Ed Worm Fond du Lac on our way home.  Attended “Farewell Party” for Father Michael Drexler, at his parents home.  He goes on the job tomorrow.
14.  Thursday: Rev. Michael Drexler goes to Kaukauna, St. Mary’s Parish.  This is his first appointment.  Ed Spees is in town and we have an important Red Cross Meeting at the Courthouse in Earl Fuller’s office with Rev. Oberleiter.  The temperature is up to 96° today.  Thres drives to the cottage for the children this evening and we stay for the night and enjoy a good nights rest.
15.  Friday: Another hot day.  Temperature is up to 98°.  We drive to the cottage again tonite.  Joe and Anna Heip spend the evening with us.  Played sheephead, Thres won 4 games, Anna 4 games Heip and I each 1 game.  They left for home at 1 A.M.
16.  Saturday: Bought a good sized order of prayer books and rosaries from Frank Lotz this morning.  Took Matt Weisheipl along to the cottage this afternoon.  Cut the grass and a lot of cleaning up.  Picked a good sized basket of wild grapes.  Gave them to Anna Drexler who will no doubt will make some wine from them.
17.  Sunday: Temperature is 50° this morning.  Attended six oclock mass.  Heard some news after mass.  Joe Baier is to be married sometime next month.  Visited Anna Drexler this afternoon.  After I left Harry Kujawa and family arrived and took Anna and Leona along to Milwaukee.
18.  Monday: After staying at Karl and Margaret overnight, the Kujawa’s drive on to Chicago.  Harry visits his cousin and Anna and Leona visited Rose and Bob Gittings.
19.  Tuesday: Had an invitation to be at the Wisconsin Pharmaceutical State Convention to receive an honor reward as a 25 year member of the Association.  Well, I was going and while waiting to make arrangements with the boys I find Art Mueller and Fred Baumgartner and their wives had gone this morning without informing me.
20.  Wednesday: Am still battling a bad cold have had it 3 weeks and it improved very little.  The Kujawas and Drexlers are back from their trip to Milwaukee and Chicago.
21.  Thursday: Ed and Thres Fretchel are married 30 years today.  Took Anna and Leona Drexler to Berlin tonite to the Mardi Gras.  Had a nice time at Mike Doro’s.  On the way back Joe and Anna Heip are also with us.  Arrived home at 2 A.M.  Doug Hunt of Wautoma is elected president of the Wisconsin Pharmaceutical Association.
22.  Friday: Prime Minister Armand Calineseu of Roumania, shot and killed in Bucharest driving his auto.  It is reported that the “pro – nazi” iron guard are responsible.  Reliable sources say thousands of these pro nazis are being executed to avenge the death of the Prime Minister.  Mailed first payment of 50 dollars to St. Nazianz for support of a poor student.
23.  Saturday: We have a big surprise party on Ed and Thres Fretchel tonite.  There was plenty of Refreshment and eats.  They were only 3 falls at the dance; Annie Weisheipl and Wenz Putzer, Thres Fretchel and Bill Heppler, Annie Sippl and _____.  The party ended at 330 A.M.
24.  Sunday: Attended 10.30 Mass this morning, hated to get up.  Played cards at Argonne Hall this afternoon, given by the Cath Order Foresters.  My score was 35 in 40 hands.  No prize for me.  Thres is busy at St. Vincent’s Keno tonite.  Joe Hemmer becomes a papa today and what a proud one!  It’s a boy.  Margaret is quite ill.

27.  Wednesday: Thres goes with Father Bastian to see the farmers of St. Vincent Congregation about poultry for our Bazaar.  I took a drive this afternoon with Uncle John Drexler.  We visited several hours with Father John Nuernberg and Ann at Wautoma.
28.  Thursday: took a drive to the cottage this afternoon to inspect the mousetraps.  Yes, we caught no mice.  Uncle John Drexler is along.  Visited Grandma Baier and Lena for short time.
