Diary of Alfred E. Potter April, 1939

04.  Tuesday: Visited Grandma Baier tonite she is laid up with a liver affliction.
05.  Wednesday: Thres Fretchel has a birthday, she is 52.  She treats Anna Heip and Ma Potter for root beer.  After church services this evening we visit Uncle John Drexler.

07.  Friday: The weather is somewhat cold with a blanket of snow on the ground.

09. Sunday: Six Oclock mass as usual.  Then to work.  Temperature does not go above 40.  Visited the Heips this afternoon played a few hands of cards – also Grandma Meisinger.  She is still down, then to Anna Drexler family, the Kujawas are here from Berlin, Bob Gittings is also here from Chicago.  After work in the evening spent an hour and a half at Anna Drexler.  She has some fine head cheese for lunch.  After ten oclock I brought the Heips to our house for few more games of cards.  Took them home at 12.45 A.M.
10.  Monday: Visited Grandma Baier today, she is somewhat better, at least she is out of bed.  Father John Nuernberg dropped in to say hello.  He wants to know why I don’t come to see him oftener.
11.  Tuesday: The Gittings leave for Chicago.  Rose and Teddy have been here 5 weeks.
12.  Wednesday: Thres and Mary attend shower for Marge Haverty at Weisheipls.  I have company at home Joe Drexler – Joe Weisheipl Sr. – Matt Drexler.  We spend the evening played sheephead.

14.  Friday: Mama Potter is caught in a heavy fog tonite after the theatre party, and she had plenty of passengers Emma Siewert –Clara Miller –Mary Schneider –Theresa Fretchel –Anna and Rose Weisheipl.  Well it was good experience for her in driving.  She arrived home without a mishap.  Mrs. Rose Jungen is taken to Mercy Hospital.  She is suffering from neuritis.
15.  Saturday: Today turns out to be a beautiful day.  Frank Kempinger is laid off at Pipkorn Fuel Company.  This may be the temporary, at least we hope so.
16.  Sunday: Six oclock mass as usual, we have quite a bit of rain.  Worked most of the day.  Treated Joe Weisheipl Sr. to a “Movie” after work.  I think this is the first movie either one of us attended this year.
17.  Monday: Our near neighbor, Mrs. Rose Jungen passes away suddenly at 5 Oclock this morning at Mercy Hospital from a heart attack. Born 1886 at Whitelaw. This afternoon I am appointed Guardian over her 5 boys Joseph, Leo, Paul, Carl, and Donald.
18.  Tuesday: Visited Grandma Meisinger this afternoon.  She is about the same as usual, still down.  Visited Grandma Baier, she is not so good today.  Visited Anna and Leona Drexler.  Leona has afternoons to herself.
19.  Wednesday: Main Robson (actress) is 75 today.  Favorite pictures of hers “Lady for a Day” and “The Kid from Kokomo.  I saw her in picture in Chicago some years back “Apple Annie” also very good.  She directed and played her own stock company for 23 years
20.  Thursday: Attend funeral services for Mrs. Rose Jungen at St. Vincents. Then to the wedding ceremony for Joe Weisheipl Jr. and Marjorie Haverty at St. Mary’s. Had wedding breakfast at Colonial Inn then reception at Marge's home 267 Washington Blvd. Met with the Sisters of Mrs. Jungens at 3 P.M. to talk over the care of the 5 Jungens boys. Then to work at the store. Met with Father Bastian in the evening, had an hour and a quarter with him, then took Anna and Leona Drexler out to the Weisheipls, then back for Mrs. and Mrs. Ed Fretchel. Had a nice time at the Weisheipls, got home at 2.30 A.M.
21.  Friday: Visited Grandma a Baier today.  She is somewhat better.
22.  Saturday: Took a ride to Milwaukee after dinner with Mama and Mary Ann.  Visited Mrs. Ida Schuppl 2047 –No.  24th St.  That she might become housekeeper for the Jungen boys.  But she gave me no encouragement.  Dropped in to see Margaret Radomsky, and Harry Wolf and Frances and Dorothy Alice.  They’re all getting ready to move.  Margaret and Karl are going to have a flat for themselves.
23.  Sunday: Ladies of St. Vincents give a card party, but the weather is too warm for cards.  Temperature is at 80°.  They had 75 tables playing.
24.  Monday: Am kept busy trying to locate someone to take over the Jungen household.  Have an apartment with Mr. and Mrs. Lee Whittemore for this evening.
25.  Tuesday: Took Mrs. Whittemore to the Jungen home this morning to look things over; she is favorably impressed, and accepts the job to be housekeeper at 3 dollars per week.
26.  Wednesday: Karl Rang passed away this afternoon at 12.55 at his home 2529 University Ave., Madison.  He had been ill about 2 months.  Born in Oshkosh Sept 5 – 1896.  Son of Charles Rang.  He received his Doctor Philosophy Degree in 1926.  He was professor of Pharmacy at the University of Saskatchewan, also dean of the Department of Pharmacy of South Dakota State College.  Of late and he was Field Representative of the University Extension Division.
27.  Thursday: Mrs. Karl Mueller a former neighbor of ours passed away at 5 Oclock this morning at Mercy Hospital.  She was a wonderful worker for the missions and no doubt is already receiving her reward.  She was born Aug 22 – 1871 in the town of Poygan.

29.  Saturday: Mrs. Karl Mueller is laid to rest this morning.  Mayor Oaks and the, And Council reappointed all city officials last night with the exception of Frank Haidlinger, president of the board of public works.
30.  Sunday: Took a drive to the cottage this afternoon, took off the storms.  Thres goes to Sacred Heart Bazaar.  Well she’s pretty lucky, gets a blanket, a good sized pail of lard.
