August 16

1937: "Mercury hits a new high today 102°. Had more company at the cottage. Cork Weisheipl is 28 today and he celebrates his birthday with a poker party at the cottage. Besides his dad and mother, Joe Jr., Joe Baier, Joe Hemmer, Clarence Brusius were there. Ma Weisheipl also brought the birthday cake along. Party broke up at 1 A.M." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]  
1940: "London is being bombed by the German planes in a terrific air battle which if kept up may decide the fate of the English. This is the sixth day of unabated bombing on the English. The Germans have sent at least 2500 planes in mass air raids on England today." [from A. E. Potter's diaries]  
1955: "Attended Kiwanis luncheon. Al Drunham - Jack McCain - Rollin Hotelling and me made up the table. A movie is shown by Rev. Bruno Romaniski 'Arm and Ammunition' is not interesting to me. Gust Keller is elected Governor Wisconsin Upper Michigan District Kiwanis. Had a talk with Norm Brown over the phone today. He is anxious to get to work. Debbie had her first tooth extraction today by Dr. Martin. she is very good and did not cry. [note on top of diary: Debbie: First tooth extraction. It's a molar.] Am busy cleaning up my office and closet at the store. Don's family is with us tonite. Temperature is 90°."  [from A. E. Potter's diaries]
