Diary of Alfred E. Potter January, 1954

01.  Friday: Not up as early as usual, attend 7.30 Hi Mass St. Vincents, Father Wagner.  Worked very little today – about 2 hours.  Had our dinner at the Town Grill.  Rose Schmidt waited on us.  Surprizing how many waitresses knew Mary Ann.  From there we drove to Neenah to visit Norm Browns family.  Then back home and took in the Raulf Theatre Walking my Baby back Home, Donald O’Connor Janet Leigh also “The Veils of Baghdad” Victor Mature and Mari Blanchard –Virginia Field.  Ended the day by winning two games of cribbage from Thres and Mary Ann.
02.  Saturday: Still looking for an error in the Annual Wage Report.  Located at this afternoon.  Uncle Joe Weisheipl had a setback this afternoon.  Dr. Will Wagner is there.  Doctor said he would not get over this one.  He may last several days, or more.
03.  Sunday: [10 hr.] To 730 High Mass Father Wagner.  Its a busy day for me.  3 ½ hours this morning and wrote orders from 330 to 930 then to the P.O. and home.

04.  Monday: [R 4 M] Saw Uncle Joe twice today.  He is breathing easier that seems to be in a comma.  Thres plays cards at Mrs. Lehnigles.  Norm Brown is with us for noon meal.
05.  Tuesday: Dropped in to see Uncle Joe this morning.  He is sleeping as he has been.
06.  Wednesday: [R 2 M    T] Saw Uncle Joe this noon, his breathing is much shorter.  Our farmers veterinary meeting is scheduled for 8 O'clock tonite at Clarence Denigers.  Just getting ready to pick up Donald to go to the meeting when we get a call that Uncle Joe passed away at 715.  Thres and myself drive out immediately.  Father Bunkelman is reciting prayers for the dead.  We stay until 11 Oclock to help cheer Annie up.  She is holding up quite well.  Mary Ann has company tonite; Joanna Mauritz, Fay Baier, and Doris Heisler are over.

09.  Saturday: We all are at Uncle Joe Weisheipls funeral this morning.  I am a pallbearer with Fritz, John, Frank Weisheipl, Les Luebke and John Paukner.
10.  Sunday: [5 ½ hrs.] To 730 Mass Father Wagner – Father Milbauer – Sermon.  To work by 10 A.M. back again at 4 P.M. worked 5 ½ hours.  Spent the evening at Annie Weisheipl’s.  Edward and his family are there.

11.  Monday: [R 4 M   11 hrs.] Norm Brown is with us.  Ma serves the duck –Joe won at a raffle some time ago.  Temperature is dropping.  I had a treatment from O.R. Simpson this afternoon for my dizziness.  Dropped in to see Annie, she is bearing up quite well.  Attended Holy Name Meeting tonight.  Father Spaulding showed slides of his hunting trip in Canada with Father Gehl.  Thres had four phone calls from Emma Baier today.
12.  Tuesday: [8 hrs.] Winter is here in earnest.  Official temperature is 7° below.  Attended first meeting of the cemetery board today at 430.  It was interesting.  This evening I visited Arthur H. Mueller (T and S).  Brought a Gutenberg Bible for him, donated by Eli Tannenbaum.  Art got quite a surprize out of it, a Jew donating a Catholic Bible.  Ma invited Aunt Annie – Thres Fretschl – and Emma Lemke in for cards tonight.  Donald took them home at midnight.  Annie does not like to think of getting home, without Joe being there.
13.  Wednesday: [R 4 M   10 ½ hrs.] Official temperature this morning is 8° below.  Raging snow storms in the east have killed nearly 50 people Monday.  Temperatures down to 27° below zero in Maine.  Snow up to a foot or more in many places.  Stopped in to see Annie Heip again.  Kidded her about having a cold sore, and brought her some carmel corn.
14.  Thursday: [9 hrs.] Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe are married by Judge Charles S. Peery in San Francisco.  Frank Lloyd Wright is 84 and of course a great architect.  When asked which of his works he considered his masterpiece, he answered “The next One.”
15.  Friday: According to Lt. Cyril Bouchelle a total of 686 accidents occurred in Oshkosh in 1953.

17.  Sunday: To 730 High Mass Father Wagner and is this a cold morning, it is 20° below zero but it does warm up some during the day.  We spend part of the afternoon at Donalds.  Debbies birthday is today, she is four, but still quite a baby.  Annie Heip takes tress to “Aquinas Club” card party at St. Peters this evening.  Mary Ann and I stopped at Heips after work, visited until nearly midnight.

18.  Monday: Took a treatment at Curative Workshop and learn that Mrs. O’Day is at Mercy Hospital.  Paid 5000 on our store debt today at the New American Bank.  Norm Brown is over for noon luncheon.  Thres plays cards at Elsie Zentners.  Edward Page 51, Supervisor of safety at K Clark died suddenly at 2 45 A.M.
19.  Tuesday: Donald drives to Kellnersville this morning.  Father Milbauer’s mother is laid to rest and our ninth grade children sing the requiem.  He returned about 4 Oclock this afternoon, said the driving was very poor.  Worked on Rexall Order with Ken Sepersky, also took him to Kiwanis luncheon.  Incidentally this is my first attendance since I broke my arm July 22nd.  This evening Thres and self to Knife and Fork Club Dinner at the Athearn.  Rear Admiral Ellis M. Zacharios speaks on “Our Future Security.” He is an able speaker, although I disagree with him that the Congressional Committee delving into Communism in this country has done more harm than good.  He admits however there are 50000 Communists and 50000 fellow travelers at the present time.
20.  Wednesday: [R 4 M] Snow today is very welcome.  Had a letter today from Father Edmund.  Nine Storm Novenas will be held in the near future according to my intention.  Work is at the Wis Axel had a farewell party for Art Hazen’s father last night at their clubhouse and presented him with a tooling outfit.  He was retired as of January 1st at 68.  Marge Weisheipl was on the job this noon, but I had to take her back home again, she is still a sick girl.  Paid 5000 on our store debt at the Oshkosh National Bank.  Mary Ann takes mother and me to the Mode tonite.  “Come Back little Sheba” starring Burt Lancaster and Shirley Booth.  “Taxi” is a good picture with Don Dailey and Constance Smith.
21.  Thursday: Visited at the Mercy Hospital tonight, Arthur H. Mueller T and S Tobacco.  He is getting along quite well, also Mrs. Cora O’Day in 233.  She is confined with a bad heart – also Amber Holmes, bookkeeper at Morgans, same as Mrs. O’Day a bad heart.  Temperature is 10° below this morning.  Annie Heip entertained for dinner at La Fonds.
22.  Friday: [R 2 M] Temperature to 9° below this A.M. moderates during the day.  Visited Dr. Will Wagner for a check up tonite.  Pressure is 130 over 80 prescribed Dramamine for my dizziness.  Jack Faust is now working at Fosters.
23.  Saturday: Over to see Marge Haverty this morning.  She is not feeling too well yet.  Told her to stay home at least until next Monday.  Lucille Felker – Arlene’s mother had a minor operation at the Mercy this morning.  Joseph Sheilinger was killed this morning at North Fond du Lac at 6.05, when hit by a Northwestern train while walking to the roundhouse.  He was an engineer for the company.  Born May 3 – 1892 in Hemau Bavaria, lived in Oshkosh until 1945.  Rose Schroeder (Mrs. John) 321 – 12th is a sister of his
24.  Sunday: [6 ½ hrs.] To 730 Hi Mass Father Wagner Sermon “I believe in God the Father.” Worked this morning.  Attended “Capping Exercises” at Mercy School of Nursing.  Met the three young ladies I’m sponsoring, Joan Diley of Omro, met her family also, Janice Renier – Green Bay – Naomi Wollangk of Oshkosh.  Dropped in to see Lucille Felker, also Aunt Mary.  Mrs. Gallagher is with her in her room.  Mrs. Gallagher is blind and hard of hearing.  Thres spends the evening out to Aunt Annie Heips.  Edwards birthday today, he celebrates at Hi K.

25.  Monday: [R Joe W.   9 hrs.   R 4 M] Art Mueller is bothered with nosebleeds these days.  We are having sleet this afternoon also rain toward evening roads are very bad, we had to postpone our annual Mueller Potter meeting, Art could not come in from the country.  Norm Brown is with us this noon.  Took a treatment at the Curative this afternoon.  Martha Hein Stauber begins taking treatments there today.  She is in the booth next to me.
26.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon, Dr. John Mook from State Teachers College talks on “Human Behavior.” Took another treatment for dizziness from O.R. Simpson at 3.15 P.M.  Looking outside tonite we note a beautiful blizzard and it looks as tho we are in for the first real snow storm of the season.
27.  Wednesday: [R 4 M] According to Annie Weisheipl, Eddie Weisheipl is doing very well for himself these days.  Florence takes in 180 dollars from dance pupils per week, Upstairs rent 15 dollars per week, Eddie salary 70 dollars per week plus P.M’s are total average of 265 dollars per week.  It is beautiful out this morning, a heavy snowfall during the night 4 ½ inches on the level.  Attended the “Big Show” put on by the JCC at the Opera House.  Well rendered.  Exceptionally good were Dr. R. Purtell as “Mae West” Henry Hanisch as “Hildegard” and Bob Koller as “Miss Stardom”

29.  Friday: [R 2 M] Had a peculiar experience with Ed Fretschl.  He became dizzy well at work and bought he was going to die.  Went to Dr. Ray Wagner for checkup found nothing wrong, recommended to see Dr. Chuck Behnke.  Ed flew into my office, wanted Donnie to rush him Dr. Behnke, I tried to calm him saying it was not dangerous, but Don had to hurry.  Dr. Behnke found nothing wrong either, so Ed came to my office this afternoon and we had a good laugh about the whole thing.
30.  Saturday: Rather snappy out this morning.  I did not get up until 9.30.  Was rather tired from last nights meeting.  It was 1° below this A.M.  Visited at Mercy Hospital this afternoon, saw Aunt Mary, no change there, dropped in to see Cora O’Day, and had a long visit with Sister Cornelia.  She has a nice room back of the chapel, and when she opens an art glass window she can attend chapel services.  Thres and I to Mode tonight, “Powder River” with Calhoun and Corinne Calvet and “Tropic Zone” with Ronald Reagan and Rhonda Fleming are both good.
31.  Sunday: [9 hrs.] To 730 Mass Father Milbauer.  Had a letter from Bishop Bona about the Indian and Negro missions.  Collection next Sunday.  Worked this morning – back at 430 thru by 10.45.  Then out to Aunt Annies, Thres stayed with her all evening from 6 on.  Mary Ann and me out after work, home at 12.30 A.M. I feel asleep on the couch woke up 2.30 A.M.  Henry Fredrickson tailor who worked for my father many years ago is 80 years old today.

Diary of Alfred E. Potter December, 1953

01.  Tuesday: [10½ hrs.] The South Side Business Auxiliary have their Christmas party at the Athearn Hotel this evening.  It is preceded by a dinner, and followed by court whist.  I attended Perpetual Help Devotion.  Billy Mauritz gets notice to take his physical examination December 17 at Milwaukee prior to being drafted.  I worked 10½ hours today.
02.  Wednesday: [R 4 M   9 ½ hrs.] Well Aunt Annie Heip has another birthday, she is 71 and well.  Rose Weisheipl has some very nice pictures at the store of Marion and Bob on their wedding day.  Took Thres and Emma to Mrs. Apell 241 ½ W. New York Avenue for tournament sheephead tonite.  Mrs. Schaffer on Parkway plays also.  Temperature today up to 47°and tonite we have rain and fog.  Worked 9½ hours today.
03.  Thursday: [11 hrs.] Not much to report so far unless things begin to happen.  Worked eleven hours today.
04.  Friday: [R 4 M   7 hrs.] Christmas shopping is beginning in earnest.  All of our store are very busy.  North 1700, South 1500.  I worked 7 hours today.  This evening to the Mode to see “Desert Song” starring Kathryn Grayson- Gordon Mac Rae- Raymond Massey; also “A Christmas Carol” starring Alastair Sim as “Scrooge.”
05.  Saturday: [6 hrs. 56 ½ hrs.] We are having more rain looks like another busy day coming up.  Had quite a snow and wind storm at Milwaukee yesterday.  Wind hit 55 miles per hour.  Two large windows S. W. Corner Gimbels store at W. Michigan and North Plankinton shattered before 2 P.M. also a sheet metal worker was blown to his death in Cudahy, plunged 45 feet, he was Rob Rothlisberg 22 of 2401 N. 53rd Street.
06.  Sunday: [5 ½ hrs.] To 730 Hi Mass – Father Milbauer.  Today’s special collection “Shrine of the Immaculate Conception” Washington, D.C. I also paid my Bazaar Donation.  Worked part time this afternoon.  Tonite assisted at the Rosary for Karl Kempinger.  Our postage meter is on the fritz this morning.  I got Rose Weisheipl to come to fix it.  After ½ hour trying she quit.  I tried until 11 P.M. to get Hans Huse, repair man.  Rose – Marge Heip – Mary Mueller –Elaine K – Ginny Abrams – Grace Sitter – Maude Labudde –Annette Timmerman, our Mary Ann have their Christmas party at Van Camps tonite.

07.  Monday: [R 4 M   1 R C Kempinger   9 hrs.] Mary Ann got home at 1.30 this morning.  The Girls had a great time at the party, they also visited Jake Skall’s Wonder Bar.  Mary Ann met Peter De Lane who knows Norm Brown well.  Mary Ann called long distance last night and had me buy an after dinner drink by long distance for the girls.  Well I got Mr. Huse down from Appleton this morning to fix our postage meter, but there was nothing wrong with that, it merely ran out of postage, and was Rose’s face red.  Norm Brown is over this noon, he has a cold.  Thres plays cards at Joe Nolte’s this afternoon, and to Christian Mothers Christmas party tonite.  Took treatment this afternoon.
08.  Tuesday: [T   9 ½ hrs.] To 630 Mass – Father Wagner.  Took Joe with us.  Learned yesterday that Auburn and Jeanette Phelps are on a three month trial separation since ___.  Joe had two young lady visitors last night.  He is back home at 11.20 P.M.  Assisted as guard with KC at the closing of 40 Hours at St. Mary’s.  Sermon Father Spaulding about Holy Thursday, the First Holy Eucharist.  I was named to the Riverside Cemetery Board last night by the City Common Council.  Auburn Phelps pulled in after 2 A.M. out at 6.50 A.M.

09.  Wednesday: [R 4 M    5 ½ hrs.]   Ma and Mary Ann attend the Foresters Christmas party at St. Vincents.  We were also invited to the Catholic Knights of Columbus Christmas party at Sacred Heart.  I sent them a shaving set for a door prize. I visited with Don and Debbie and Don Jr. about an hour.  Don was babysitter.  Arlene was with Ma and Mary Ann and by the way, today is Arlene's birthday.  I think she's 23.  Auburn Phelps and Jeanette must be getting together for short intervals.  Last night he came in after 1 A.M. out at 6.50 A.M.
10.  Thursday: [9 ½ hrs.] Met Hugh Misdall at the North Store this morning.  He thought if I go South this winter I might need a luggage carrier, I think Hugh could stand a vacation.  Ma – Thres Froetschl and Emma Siewert are having a belated birthday celebration at Aunt Annie Weisheipl’s.  Annie gets a Pokeno Set for birthday present.  Joe Stauber has a birthday, he is 55.
11.  [8 hrs.]
12.  Saturday: [10 hr.  57 hours] To Mercy Hospital to see Sister Iranaea and Sister Philippine.  Aunt Mary is now in room 201.  She is in good spirits this morning.  Met Sister Marcella a Sister from New Mexico who is teaching near Port Washington.  I learn that Sister Aurelia is now in Danville New Jersey.  Worked 10 hours today.  Joe and Hans make the rounds tonight “The Eagles Club” The “V.F. Wars Hall” and “Westward Ho.” Wrote a letter to Monsignor Wm Renner.
13.  Sunday: [6 hr.] To 730 Hi Mass with Holy Name Soc.  Father Wagner – Father Milbauer preaches on Catholic Belief and Practice.  He especially stresses Tradition.  Worked 6 hours today.  Attended St. Vincents Christmas Cantata.  Donald takes pictures.  We had Debbie with us.  She was much interested and she was also very entertaining.  Dave and Mrs. Garcia were sitting ahead of us with their little girl.  They got quite a kick out of Debbie's wise remarks. Donald and family were with us until midnight.

14.  Monday: [R 4 M   7 ½ hrs.] Took Thres – Emma – and Mary Fenzl to Ostertags Tea Room for the Annual Christmas Party of their Ladies Auxiliary S.S.B.M. Card Club.  Dess Wirtz is taken suddenly ill before the party.  I took a treatment today.  Norm Brown is here today.  Ma has sandwiches for us.  Thres is at the Council of Catholic Women Christmas meeting and program.  Joe Weisheipl sprained or broke his ankle yesterday when getting into his car.
15.  Tuesday: [9 ½ hrs.] Jimmie Weisheipl is one year of age today.  I told the folks he is going to be a prize fighter.  Elaine Kolterjahn is 29 today.  Father Pimiskern is in my office for a visit this morning.  He tells me Father Bob Hogan at St. Peter’s is a very well to do priest, in fact the boys call him the wealthiest in the diocese.  Kenny Sepersky is in today for his final order of the year, and we made it $50000.  Kenny is elated because we are the first $50000 account he has ever had.  Wrote a letter to Sister Virginia.
16.  Wednesday: [R 4 M    9 ½ hrs.]  A nice day but cold about 7° above this morning. Paid last respects to Paul Sitter this morning at Konrads.  Visited Martha Hein Stauber at Mercy.  She is in Room 115.  Her arm is still in traction.  Met Mrs. John Birmingham in the same room.  Dropped in to see Joe Weisheipl Jr.  He is in room 146.  Took Marge to work.
17.  Thursday: [9 hrs.] Down to Mercy Hospital to see Joe and bring Marge to work.
18.  Friday: [R 4 M   9 hrs.] Had a new battery put in my Desoto, 32190 Miles on it.  To see Bob Conroy about Joe Weisheipl’s insurance.  Took Marge to work again this time from our North Store.  Joe Weisheipl has a cast put on his foot this morning.  Norm Brown is in to visit him.  We learn Joe has been to confession and is feeling like a new man.
19.  Saturday: [9 hrs.] Ed Froetschl gets his new set of upper teeth today.  Sybelle Brown has a birthday.
20.  Sunday: [7 hours] To 730 Hi Mass - Father Wagner.  To work at 915.  Took over Post Office Window from 10-1230 and from 6 to 8 in the evening.  Waited on approximately 450 people.  My feet are rather tired tonite.  Ate a little too much lunch after work and could not get to sleep until 1 A.M.
21.  Monday: [R 4 M  8 ½ hr.] Norm Brown is with us this noon, he also leaves some presents.
22. Tuesday: [12 ½ hrs.   T] Well its a busy day for me today.  Gossip Column According to Marge Weisheipl to Mary Ann she likes our present mode of life better than before.  Joe goes his way she goes her way.  He treats her much nicer this way.  According to Mrs. Leo Polishinski – Aubie Phelps gave Jeanette a licking last week.  She claims Auburn is allergic to beer whatever that means.  We thought everything was OK with them.  Don and I worked on the Doctors presents tonight.  I wrapped 109 packages and it took me to 12.30 A.M.  To bed at 2 A.M.

23.  Wednesday: [11 hrs.] The time is passing so fast these days we hardly realize that Christmas is almost here.  Another busy day, I paid bills wrote over 120 checks, tonite get out Ken Seperskys loaf of rye bread.  Mary Ann trims our tree tonite –Joe Helps Donald trim his.  Donald had to get a new battery for our Kiser car.  Donald and Billy Mauritz are out delivering presents to the Doctors.
24.  Thursday: [9 hours] Well I’m getting pretty tired, and maybe a little grouchy too.  Sunny Peck our Abbott salesman now in Milwaukee dropped in my office for a visit.  It was nice to see him.  Norm Brown was in to pick up his loaf of “Christmas Rye Bread.”
25.  Friday: [2 ½ hours] Attended Midnight Mass for Father Wagner (Celebrant) Father Spaulding – Father Milbauer (Sermon).  Back to work by 10 Oclock.  Matt Gregory Sitter at the PO had a nice chat, comparing notes about our physical condition.  Met Charles Juculano, learn that Victoria Hanson working at our North Store is his niece.  Her father George Goyke.  Charles was married 2 a Bolda.  Worked only 2 ½ days hrs. today.  Store closes at 12 Oclock.  Donald and family are with us for dinner and the rest of the day.  The children have lots of fun with their presents.  Donald took the children out to Felkers at 430 and at 600 we took Don and Arlene with us to the Strand to see Esther Williams – Van Johnson –Tony Martin in “Easy to Love” also Dennis O’Keefe – Coleen Gray in “The Fake” a Movie about fake famous Art Masterpieces.

26.  Saturday: [5 ½ hours] Didn’t work too much today.  This afternoon we visit with Aunt Mary, she is about the same.  She does not know us.  Visited with Sister Irenaea and Sister Laurentina.  Learn that Annie Weisheipl slept on the back stairway over home and heard her knew, strained a ligament.
27.  Sunday: [4 hours] To 730 Mass – Father Milbauer.  Then to work.  This afternoon to visit Uncle Joe Weisheipls – Joe is much improved.  Marion and Bob come in, and Mrs. Lichtfuss –Bobs mother, she has the shrillest speaking voice I have ever heard.  I could’nt take it very long.  We exchange presents, I got a box of assorted small cheeses from Ed and Rose.  We had a surprize visit at the store this morning.  Dr. Harry Horwitz from Oakland California is spending time with his mother on Oregon Street.  After an hours worked this evening we attend the Oshkosh to see Bing Crosby – Claude Dauphin –Christin Fourcode in “Little Boy Lost” Rod Cameron -        Tab Hunter – John Dehner Richard Erdman “Die Eiserne Yungfrau.”

28.  Monday: [R 4 M   8 ½ hrs.] Francis Lamb is in to make out our unemployment report.  I made a voluntary payment of 750 dollars.
29.  Tuesday: [T 10 ½ hr.] I have a cold on the way, at least it feels that way.

31.  Thursday: [9½ hrs.] Well everybody is all hustle and bustle trying to get things cleaned up in the old year, and then celebrate.  I’m working on Federal Reports.  Worked until 9 P.M. making deliveries.  Took Thres out to Weisheipls at 745 and stopped at Fretschls, they did’nt hear me, Eddie Jr. was to their house with his family.  Took them out at 9 P.M. and had Uncle Joe play cards with us, I helped him along and he did very well, did not win a game until 12 midnight.  We leave for home at 115 A.M.  Joe said it was the best evening he had for a long time.

Diary of Alfred E. Potter November, 1953

01.  Sunday: Fourth Degrees have Communion breakfast at St. Marys.  Thres and I are not there.  We attend 730 Mass St. Vincents – Father Milbauer.  I worked 5 hours at the store today.  Hans Haertl calls for Joe this afternoon. I introduce him to a “Martini.” What is that?  My its sharp.  To the Oshkosh tonite Dean Martin – Jerry Lewis in “The Caddy” with Donna Reed and Barbara Bates.  “The Homesteaders” with “Wild Bill Elliot” is also good.  A blessed event at Frank and Betty Drexler, a little baby boy, I’m sure the three girls will have fun.

02.  Monday: [R 4 M   TVG] To 730 Mass – Father Wagner.  Another treatment at 3 P.M.  My arm is more tense than usual.  Bernhard Poeschl passed away this morning at seven.  Born in Austria Feb. 26 – 1869.  Married Louise Kinderman in 1895.  Survivors Mrs. Geo. Jensen – Mrs. John Matsche – Mrs. Lorenz Kuenzl – Mrs. Marvin Arnold – Bernard Poeschl Jr. –Louis Lemberger – 2 Brothers Joe and Frank Poeschl, 16 grand and 17 great grand children.

03.  Tuesday: Joe Baier had bad luck with his new car this evening.  Was taking his children of writing and ran into a parked car on ___ Street.  He has to get a new fender.

04.  Wednesday: [R 2 M] Well this is a big day, our formal opening of the North Store and my birthday.  It is a grand success.  George Davis- Sales Manager Central Division Rexall, flew up from St. Louis.  He and I had our pictures taken, he was also interviewed by John Minors of the Northwestern.  A steady flow of people all day.  Had dinner at the Athearn.  Norm and Sybelle Brown- Paul Martin- Bob Fisher- Kenny Sepersky- George Davis- Fred and Loretta Baumgartner- Thres, Mary Ann - myself.  Ed and Fred Worm come in for dessert.  Took in 2293.  After closing party for the clerks.  We are home at 11 P.M.  Im rather tired.
05.  Thursday: We are back to normal at the stores.  The south store had good business yesterday in spite of north opening 158000.  Bernard Poeschl is laid to rest this morning.
06.  Friday: Emma Lemke birthday, she is 67.  I tried to congratulate her over the phone, but had quite a time doing so.

08.  Sunday: [T] To 730 Mass (Low) Father Wagner Holy Name Sunday.  Bake sale and Card parties this afternoon and evening by Christian Mothers Society.  Joe Rieger has the time of his life, roller skating for the first time at a rink near Fond du Lac.  Mary Ann and I worked until 10.30 tonite.  I put in 8 ½ hours.  Ma worked a short time at St. Vincents Hall this morning.  This afternoon she played cards with Mr. and Mrs. Mike Mohr and tonite she was kept busy working until 10.30.
09.  Monday: [R 4 M   1 RF] Fred Baumgartner is taken into Rotary.  Ma plays cards at Emma Lemke’s this afternoon, S.S. Business Mens Auxiliary.  This evening she attends meeting Council of Catholic Women at the Century.  Took her sister Annie along.  I took another treatment this afternoon, this makes 35 I have taken.  Am going on at two a week schedule from now on.  Norm Brown is here for weekly dinner.  George Van Beynan’s wife “Lorraine” died at St. Marys Hospital Rochester this morning.  Marge Weisheipl said she attended Mass here yesterday morning.  Born April 17 – 1901 Green Bay.  Married May 4 – 1921.  Two sons survived.
10.  Tuesday: Thres plays cards again at Emma Siewerts this time with Mrs. Anna Ostertag and Mrs. Brusius.  K.C. sheephead tournament.  Harry Elmer was found dead in bed this morning.  Born Oct. 24 – 1886.  Last I saw him this summer, he was working for Joe Nebel.
11.  Wednesday: Mama plays cards at Security Bank (So Side Bus Mens Hall) this afternoon.  She played with Mary Beck – Mame Haidlinger – Mary Fenzl and she won two pounds of sugar.  State Senator William Draheim of Neenah announced yesterday he has quit the Democratic party to join the Republicans.  Draheim is 54 elected in 1958 from the 19th Senate District.  Mr. and Mrs. Joe Mathe 830 – 11th St. were married 50 years ago – Nov. 11 – 1903 by Father Charles Stahling.  Mr. Mathe born 74 years ago in Schoenberg – Austria – Mrs. was born 73 years ago in Guschwati Austria.
12.  Thursday: Had quite a visit with Fred Weiss and his office at the Daily Northwestern.  Took a treatment this afternoon.  Pay last respects to Lorraine Van Beynen.  The ladies play Pokeno at Annie Heips tonight.  I took them home.  Mame Erbes – Caroline Kellerman –Emma Siewert – Thres Froetschl.  Had a Milwaukee phone call from O.A. Haas this morning.  I worked 9 hours today.

13.  Friday: [R 4 M] Well I must say mama has a beautiful birthday.  Temperature way up in the fifties.  Presents, a sweater from Dad – Nightie from Mary Ann 3 Pr Stockings from Joe, 2 Aprons from Don and Arlene.  Had a long visit with Sr. Irenaea, also Sr.  Philippina.  Franz Stampfer needs 400 dollars to come to U.S.A.  Ma has company tonite.  Thres Froetschl – Annie Weisheipl – Emma Lemke.  Thres Froetschl is very lucky at sheephead.  Charlotte Arendt passed away yesterday at Ishpeming.  Body brought here we attend rosary for her at Marquardt funeral home.

14.  Saturday: Charlotte Arendt funeral services at St. Vincents.  Laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery – Berlin.  Charlotte was born Nov. 11 – 1911 in Berlin.  She worked for us.  Leo tells me she was chair director at their church.  He had over 100 Mass Offerings for her.  I’m back at Mercy this morning to give Sister Philippina the money for Franz Stampfer.  Donald and Joe rake and burn up the leaves at the cottage.  Temperature this afternoon 65 tonite 45.  Mamie Eisenhower, U.S. First Lady is 57 today.  She and Dwight are in Canada for short visit at Ottawa.  Wisconsin beats Illinois 34-7.
15.  Sunday: To 730 Mass (Hi) Father Milbauer.  To work by 915.  This afternoon we attend open house at Ted Hoyer and Co. at 2221 Minnesota St.  They manufacturer aids for the handicapped.  Vitor Hildemann is in charge of production and Research, Mrs. Ted (Marie) Hoyer is in charge of the office.  Teddy has been confined to a wheelchair for 17 years.  Joe Rieger and Hans Haertl drive around Lake Winnebago this aft.  I work from 445 until 615.  Tonight we see Abbott and Costello in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.  “Below the Sahara” is very good in technicolor on Africa.  This evening my first out since Nov. 6th.

16.  Monday: [R 4 M   RLF] Norman Brown is with us this noon.  I learned his birthday is July 29th.  Thres and Mary Ann attend the first Committee Concert sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church.  “Wilma Lipp.” Coloratura Soprano – Vienna State Opera presents an interesting program of German songs and selections from famous Arias.
17.  Tuesday: Purchase new tires for the De Soto from Bizz Marheine.  Mileage today 31675 miles.  Tonight the Civic Music Association presents “Apollo Boys Choir” at the Oshkosh.  Three Oshkosh boys are members, Donald Boese –John and Bruce Clark.  They present a very fine program, some of the Sopranos are really outstanding.  Had what may be my last or next to the last examination of my arm by Dr. Ray Wagner.  Ed Radke and Floyd Devoe connect garage and house with the light outside.  Prayed Perpetual Help Prayers at home.

19.  Thursday: Eddie Weisheipl and myself leave on the 7.58 train to Milwaukee, arrive 9.30, to McKesson Robbins then to McClurg’s.  Rene bought a luncheon for us.  Had it at Raatsch’s then to M D Orum and Yahr Langes.  Paul Hayden waited on us at Y L’s.  He began working there in 1898.  Also met Walter Lange – Bill Kies – Lou Frïtschl.  Clyde March is also in the city on business.  We are all back home at 715 left the city at 5.40 P M.  Thres use the car to visit and played cards at Maxine Siewerts.  Tonite she entertains at home: Emma Lemke –Barbara Beck – Mrs. Aloys Tsheck.  Temperature 72 in Milwaukee 62 in Oshkosh at 10 P.M.
20.  Friday: George Ruedinger passed away suddenly at 4.10 this morning.  Dr. Ray Wagner was called in at 2 Oclock, blood pressure is OK and George seemed normal otherwise.  Doctor was called again at 4 Oclock.  George could not be saved.  He was born July 16 – 1898.  Was employed by Clarence Deniger for 7 years.  Arthur B. Chapman was elected president of the Morgan companies yesterday.  He is the son-in-law of the late J. Earl Morgan.  Hugo Eckardt elected as Executive Vice President Clarence Petri – Secretary and Director of Sales.  Walter Kleinschmidt Director of Manufacturing, Gilbert Bloechl, director of purchasing, Sales manager Henry Kimberly Jr., plant Superintendent Carl Binner.  Sister Mary Alicia (Olive Kelly) Estate inventoried at $63625.  One of the owners of the building we bought 72 and 74 Main Street.
21.  Saturday: Mr. and Mrs. Le Roy Thompson are celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary.  He is 49 ½ inches and she is 47 ½ inches tall.  They live in 612 6th St.  If I’m not mistaken she was married to Christ Dengler – famous Oshkosh midget before.
22.  Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass, Father Wagner Lady Foresters to Holy Communion.  Worked 7 ½ hours today.  This evening stood guard with 4th degree K. of C. for Geo. Ruedinger.  Rosary Monsignor Bastian.

23.  Monday: Norm Brown is here for “laid of lamb” dinner.  Geo. Ruedinger is laid to rest.  Attended the funeral Mass.  Quite a number of K.C. were there.  Took a treatment this afternoon.  Will be taking only one a week from now on.  Thres plays cards at Leone Dodds – won 20 cents.  Joe Hough is now in the insurance business with Harry Bruegger.  They represent the Aetna Ins. Co.
24.  Tuesday: Thres has luncheon at K.C. Club, plays cards for the afternoon.  Emma – Maxine – Caroline and Thres make up a table.
25.  Wednesday: There was quite a commotion at our neighbors Aubie and Jeanette Phelps this morning about 3 Oclock, Woke up Joe Rieger.  Couldnt tell if it was a robbery or just a heavy family scrap.
26.  Thursday: Got up a little later than usual.  Took magazines to the Sisters.  Had a very pleasant visit with Sister Romana.  Then to work for short time.  Had a one o’clock dinner at the Raulf Hotel.  Took Joe with us.  Mary Ann and self down to the store to make up deposit.  Then to the Raulf Theatre to see “Kiss Me Kate” with Kathryn Grayson –Howard Keel – Ann Miller – Keenan Wynn, its a 3 D picture.  Also “Walkie Talkie” with Wm Tracy – Joe Sawyer, very comical.
27.  Friday: [R 2 M] Martha Pahlow is laid up with the flu.  Had a surprise visitor this afternoon.  Karl Jungens whom I had not seen in years.  He is still living in Milwaukee, with New York Life Insurance Company for five years.  He has 4 children.  His father in law Mr. Koerner of Menasha is retired for some years.  Had worked with Menasha Woodenware until an oil strike was made on a 300 acre tract of land which he owned in Kansas and almost sold for $2500.  Martha Hein broke her right arm at the shoulder.
28.  Saturday: Father Wagner calls me about going to his cottage for few days.
29.  Sunday: [5 hrs.] To 730 Hi Mass - Father Wagner.  A letter from Bishop Bona is read pertaining to the Novena beginning tomorrow in honor of the dogma of the “Immaculate Conception of Mary - Mother of Jesus.  Worked 5 hours today.  Saw “Roman Holiday at the Oshkosh with Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn.  This is Audrey's star debut.  She's cute.  Co-feature is “Merry Mirthquakes with Liberace as M.C. and of course offers some very fine numbers on the piano.

30.  Monday: [R 4 M    1 RLF     7 ½ hs.] Peggie Mueller (Mrs. Richard Harthun is 24 today.  Norm Brown is here today for special tender rise to him.  Took a treatment at three and after that I stopped to visit with Joe and Annie Heip.  Joe is improving right along and we are in hopes he will be able to walk before long.  Thres plays cards at Leone Dodds this afternoon.  Father Wagner is up to his cottage with Ed Wertz – Byron Gunz – Joe Sosinski.  I worked 7 ½ hours today
