Diary of Alfred E. Potter February, 1953

01.  Sunday: To 730 Mass then to work.  Joe Baier is exceptionally busy with prescriptions.  We did not get away from the store until after one oclock.  Art Hazen is back tonight for work.  Father Alphonse Wagner leaves for Florida this morning.  Mary Ann and Joan Mauritz to the Raulf to the Movie “The Bad and the Beautiful” with Walter Pidgeon – Dick Powell –Lana Turner – Kirk Douglas.  Forty Hours ends at St. Johns tonight.  11 of our 4th Degree Knights act as guards.  Walter Lennox was my partner.

02.  Monday: [R 4 M    T.V.S.] Up early this morning to sell candles at St. Vincents.  Lucky I got up earlier than usual Ed Fretschl is laid up with a cold.  Took in 95 dollars.  Flu is rampant at the store.  Marge Haverty – Mrs. Romey – Virginia Abrams are laid up.  Had a card from Jean Powers, today from Miami.  To Kiwanis Directors luncheon to make up a meeting.  Had quite a tussle with the books at the store again.  This is the third month Im running into trouble, and it is not my errors either.  Worked until 11.15 to rectify.
03.  Tuesday: Kenny Sepersky is in town worked most of the day with him.  Took him to Kiwanis luncheon.  Thres and I to Ray Simpson for another treatment.  It is my second.  We are going to be on apple juice for a couple of weeks.  Ed Fretschl is back to work but he looks bad.
04.  Wednesday: [R 4 M] Took Paul Martin to lunch at the Town Grill.  Ed Fretschl is back in bed again
05.  Thursday: Marge Haverty is back on the job this noon.  This is a day of rain mixed with a little snow at times.
06.  Friday: [R 4 M] I have a dandy cold started, the first this winter. I have been very fortunate usually I have two or three colds back of me by this time.  Elaine Kolterjahn is also laid up today.  My De Soto hits the 25000 mile mark this evening at 630 on the Oregon Jackson Bridge as I was returning from the West Store.  Thres plays Zamba at Baranowskis tonite.  She gets home at 12.30, works her crossword puzzle and we get to bed at 2 A.M.
07.  Saturday: Dr. Ray Wagner tells me the Old Age Pension will authorize no more hospital care for Mary.  I went to see Sister Irene about it, who referred me to Sister Sofaria, she in turn advised not to do anything about it until I hear from her.
08.  Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass Boy Scouts as well as Holy Name Man receive Holy Communion in a body.  We also received instructions in regard to new regulations for fasting before Holy Communion.  Also about evening Mass.  These rules have been in effect since Jan. 16 – 1953.  They are very lenient.  Took Mary Ann – Joan Mauritz – Mama to the Raulf Theatre to see Red Skelton in “The Clown” Jane Greer and Jim     Considine.  It’s almost too sad for me.  “Desperate Search” is better with Howard Keel Jane Greer – Patricia Medina – Keenan Wynn.

09.  Monday: Norm Brown is our guest today.  Mama had some specially browned pigs hocks today.  We all enjoyed them very much. 
10.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon had Harvey Lhost for my guest.  Nile Behnke showed slides of Oshkosh from a hundred years ago to the present day. It was a very interesting program. Met Ken Sepersky and Muriel Ziegler at the hotel. Had Rexall sales meeting at the Raulf tonite. Miss Ziegler explained the new Ann Delafield toilet good line. Kenny showed a movie of the Rexall Company from its start by Louis K. Ligget until now. Mueller Potter furnished lunch and refreshments. We are home at 12.30. 
11.  Wednesday: Clark Hastings is in town and I had to be his luncheon guest with Paul Martin.  Had a letter today from Sister Laurentina in regard to scholarships for student nurses.  I sent her a check for three scholarships to be paid for in three years.  This is been a wet day, it either rained or snowed most of the day.
12.  Thursday: News comes over the radio that Dr. and Mrs. Lloyd Helmes were killed in an airplane accidents somewhere in California this afternoon.  The ladies I mean Thres – Annie and Emma play cards at Fretschls tonight.  I joined them after work.  It was fun while it lasted.  We are home at 12.30.  Banks and City Hall are closed today account of Lincoln’s Birthday.
13.  Friday: This is a very busy day at the store, I believe Valentine Day has something to do with it.  More definite news about the Helmes!  They had been visiting their daughter Mrs. Anderson at Colton Calif.  They arrived last Saturday from La Paz Mexico where they had been on a fishing trip with a number of Midwesterners who had left in 21 planes on Jan. 30th from Middleton Wis. for Mexico.  Mr. Alfred and Mary Johnson of Madison had Lloyd and Zelma as their passengers.  They hit into a heavy wind on the takeoff at Colton, their plane over turned, burned and all were killed.  Took Ma and Mary Ann to the Oshkosh Theatre to see “Stars and Stripes Forever” Clifton Webb does a wonderful job as “Sousa” Debra Paget – Rob Wagner –Ruth Hussey.  “Night without Sleep” Gary Merrill – Linda Darnell.
14.  Saturday: The aftermath of my cold still has me in its grip, a hangover cough and my ticker does’nt seem so good, my wrist pains are not improved, think I’ll head for the M.D. next week.
15.  Sunday: To 730  Mass Father Pihale Jesuit offers the Mass.  Then to work.  This afternoon we visit Aunt Mary, she has a bad cold.  Also visit Alvina Putzer.  She is still not ready to go home.  Father Vincent is here also.  Tried to see Rose Binder but no visitors allowed.  Thres finds when she talks with Aunt Mary, instead of being Marys sister, she is the “Girl from home.” Sister Irene is with us for a short visit also met Sister Phillip.  I have a bad nosebleed at 830 at the store, it lasts ¾ hour, have another at 11.30.

16.  Monday: [R 4 M   TVG] Father Victor Kandy was in the store last evening.  He tells me Sabina is at Mercy Hospital in fact has been there for the last six weeks.  I told about Aunt Mary, he is going to visit her and he tells me that she will recognize him, I don’t think she will.  My cold is still bad and aggravating.  Did not go back to work tonite.
17.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon.  Delbert Kenny from West Band is the speaker for brotherhood week.  Andrew Anderson painter and Ben Zinth – Furrier – were guests at our table.  Ben tells me he was a charter member of Kiwanis, in fact one of the first eleven to sign up.  Mr. Kaerwer is in to see me about Aunt Mary.  He is with the pension dept and if I understand correctly her pension will be stopped as of March 1st.  Thres and me take Miss Irish Treatment, Thres need not return, but I must be back.
18.  Wednesday: Dropped in to visit with Uncle Joe Weisheipl this morning. He is improving fairly well now. Ray Simpson gives him treatments every Wednesday and tells him he is able to help him. Also saw Joe Drexler to see if we could stall the Pension Dept. for a month in Aunt Marys case. Thres and I attend stations tonite - Father Milbauer. After services Donald and family are over to visit with us. Debbie is very good at assembling puzzles. The folks stay until 11.45.
19.  Thursday: [TEG] Thres and self attend funeral services for Sabina Kandy at Winneconne this morning.  Dinner at the City Hall after the services.  Father Rauch presented a beautiful eulogy after the service.  Met Fathers Quigley – Anthony Baier – Spaulding – Ehr and housekeeper.

21.  Saturday: Had a phone call from Jane Troxell this morning saying that Anna and Lovie Drexler are in town to attend funeral services for Mrs. Louis Meisinger.  She wanted us to be sure to be home as they will visit with us this afternoon.  I worked this afternoon and evening.  Annie and Leona Drexler did not come to see, may be Annie became sick, and could not come.
22.  Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass Father Wagner is back from Florida, he has a healthy looking sun tan.  Quite a number of our fourth degree knights and ladies to Milwaukee today for 4th degree exemplification.  Turns out to be a beautiful day, we visit Aunt Mary.  She calls Thres –Mary Ann.  I visited Godfrey Menzel he had a hernia operation last Tuesday.  Bill Clark was the surgeon.  Frey expects to go home tomorrow.  Met Herb Mathwig, he tells me Harold is very sick at the hospital.  Also met Father Kandy and Lovie.  Father visited several from Winneconne.  We then visited Uncle Joe and Annie Heip and, learn that Annie Drexler and Lovie visited with them from 130 to 4.45 yesterday afternoon took train back to Milwaukee at 5.30.
23.  Monday: Another very nice day.  Father Wagner dropped in this morning.  He got home from Florida Saturday noon.  He almost took a plane to the Mardi Gras.  It was this National Airlines DC 6 which crashed in the Gulf of Mexico and all 46 persons aboard perished.  Vic Fink and Harold Walgreen from Brands are over to my office this afternoon with complete plans for our new fixtures.  The price 28500 dollars.  They are very up todate, and should be the finest in the state.  Norman Brown is over this noon for Smoked Spare Ribs –Sauerkraut and Dumplings and Cherry Ice Cream.  I dropped in to Sitters to pay last respects to Frank Biebl

24.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon O.R. Jones showed some very interesting slides of the tournament of roses in California.  Took another massage treatment from Ray Simpson

27.  Friday: Well it looks like a busy day ahead, 5 phone calls all waiting when I arrive.  Went to Mercy Hospital to visit with Sister Irene –Sister Laurentina and Sister Emmelia.  Heard from Joe Drexler this morning that Mary would stay in pension providing there is no other expense charged to the department.  This afternoon 2 oclock is deadline for bids the job at our new location.
28.  Saturday: Francis Lamb is over this morning to begin work on our income tax return.  He stays until 130.  This evening took Mary Ann – Joan Mauritz and Thres to the Oshkosh to see Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin in “the Stooge” I almost laughed myself sick with Lewis.  The girls in the picture – Marion Marshall – Polly Bergen.  Co-feature “Strange Fascination” Cleo Moore Hugo Haas – Mona Barrie.  To the “Town Grill” after the show for a nice dinner.  I had sword fish steak.
