Diary of Alfred E. Potter June, 1953

01.  Monday: [R 4 M] Norm Brown is with us today but Thres is not home.  The ladies “SSBM Auxiliary” have a dinner and cards at Ostertags Tea Room on Ceape St. Ma gets 20 cents.  Mame Siewert becomes suddenly ill after the meal, and had to be taken home.
02.  Tuesday: [TG] Called Ted Plier for 10 yards fill dirt, got out Kiwanis Agriculture Report.  Ralph Witherbee asked me to take over as chairman Agriculture Committee, Norm Robl is out.  Frank Schultz had a good suggestion about farmers landscaping.  Milton Seefeldt wants a 60 x 60 Screen, I’ll have it for him.  Sister Alverna wants me for June 16 for chaperone to Milwaukee.  Had a terrible dream last night, but everything turned out OK in the end.  Ken and Mrs. Sepersky are married 28 years today.
03.  Wednesday: We are at the cottage tonight.  Donald and Joe put in the dock.  They worked until into the dark but did as good a job as could be expected.
04.  Thursday: Julie Baumgartners birthday.  I think she’s 22.

06.  Saturday: Had Joe help us clean the cellar this afternoon.  Donald and Joe haul the junk away.  This leaves the fruit cellar and barroom to be cleaned.  Joyce Janke is married to David Kolf this morning.  Mary Ann attended the church service and she commented it was beautiful.  Took our family that is Don – Arlene – Debbie – Don Jr. – Mary Ann Joe Mamma and myself to Ottos Hi K for a tender loin steak dinner.  It was Joe’s first experience with a good sized steak
07.  Sunday: Attended the graduation services for Catholic Hi School Graduates at 9.15 Mass at Sacred Heart.  The Fourth Degree Knights – 19 of us –served as honor guard.  This afternoon we serve again at the Corpus Christi celebration at the Jesuit Novitiate (Fahrney Estate).  About 40 of us present.  Frank Kammerer and myself lead the Honor Guard.  It was very impressive and edifying.  Bishop Bona spoke in praise of this grand event.  After I completed the orders at the store took the folks to the Raulf.  “Scandal at Scourie” stars Greer Garson –Walter Pidgeon – Agnes Moorehead –Donna Corcoran a picture of a Catholic Orphan, adopted by a Protestant couple.  “A Slight Case of Larceny” with Mickey Rooney –Eddie Bruchen –Elaine Stewart.
08.  Monday: [R 4 M   T] Buss Baumgartner came home from service yesterday.  He visits at our store today and gets a parking ticket.
09.  Tuesday: Well I have a new job today at Kiwanis luncheon.  I am selling “Derby” hats and did’nt do so bad, sold 28 in spite of a number of boys who already had theirs.  Had Margaret Eyers in at the store tonight, got her straitened around at the North Store.  Also learn she has Howard Christianson as a boy friend.  Also had Emma Nigl Blackbird in the office tonight.  She tells me Bill Jess gets around on two (2) stumps.  Chuck Fiss is in to see me about a donation for the Spanish American War Vets Convention.
10.  Wednesday: [R 2 M] Had a call from Herbert Pitz this morning about a summons being drawn on me for some infraction related to the brothers of the brush.  Had Robert (Bob) Eyers in the office this morning for a visit.  He attends St. Lawrence College and will be entering third class this fall.
11.  Thursday: (Have a nice letter from Father Gerald Walker today.  He writes Monsignor Will Renner will be at Mt Calvary June 7th.  May 28th) [Note: Repeat of May 28th entry?]                                                                                                             
12.  Friday: (A nice warm day. Sent a box of candy to Alma Link and Anabel Wood for their help at the 4 H Safety Speaking contest.  A nice warm day.  Got out city assessment report – Toiletries Tax Report – Pay Day.  May 29th Joe Rieger had his first glass of lemonade today, he says its good.) [Note: Repeat of May 29th entry?]                                                                                                                              
This is the big round up day for “culprits” who are to be tried by the “brothers of the brush” and sisters of the swish.” Jim Dougherty and A.E. Potter (thats me) are put in the stockade and had our heads ornamented with paint.
13. Saturday: Worked this morning, to the cottage this afternoon.  Cleaned up the boat house it needed it badly.  Joe caulked the boat.  This evening to confession.  Took Joe along, this is his first time to confession since he is with us.  He says in Germany they go every 3 months or at least once a year.  This evening took Thres and Joe to the “Mode” “Wait till the Sun shines Nellie” is very good, and so is Fort Defiance.  Lawrence Kinateder and Audrey Ackerman are married this morning at Sacred Heart.  Don – Arline and Mary Ann attend reception at American Legion.
14.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Vincents with Holy Name Society, took Joe Rieger along.  Then to work.  Today is Picnic Day for Mueller Potter Employees.  Needless to say they all had a very good time, especially Marge and Joe Weisheipl.  This is Joe’s first time out to an event of this kind.
15.  Monday: My muscles are somewhat sore from playing baseball yesterday.  Norm Brown is over this noon for dumplings etc.  Ray Novotny, Postmaster has good news for me this morning.  We are going to have a postal station in our new store on Main Street.  Also my contract for Station No.  1 at the South Store has been renewed for 3000 per year, Station No. 4 will be 1200 per year.
16.  Tuesday: Took Sisters Alverna – Adelaide – and Theodore to Mt Mary also took along Eddie Weisheipl to do some buying at McClurgs.  I did some at Broadway Church Goods.  We had a very fine “Filet Mignon” at Cape Cod Inn.  Back in home at 7.30 P.M.  Worked for about an hour at the store and called it a day.
17.  Wednesday: [R 2 M   TG] Slept long this morning until 9.15 A.M. then to work.  This afternoon to visit Aunt Mary at the hospital.  Sister Laurentina has a nice new vestment for their chapel.  It is to cost me 200 dollars.  Also visited Mechtildis, and advised her to leave_____ in Germany, in asmuch as he can obtain a position as foreman in a shoe factory.  Florence Weisheipl puts on her dance revue at the Raulf Theatre today.
18.  Thursday: [TG] This is the 14th wedding anniversary of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.

20.  Saturday: We attend funeral of Alvina Stadler this morning.  Felt sorry for Theresa.  Mr. (George and Joe) could not attend.  After the service at cemetery we visited Anna Drexler (Mrs. John) next to Jennie Millers.  Anna is in very good spirits, tells us Betty had a baby three weeks ago, a boy.  This afternoon Fred is moving merchandise from our basement to the new north location.  Thres Joe and myself to cottage this afternoon.  We find the boat in fairly good condition.  Took Joe to Hoffmasters where John Mitchell interviewed him about a job they have open.  Ernie Siewert opens a Sausage Market.  He is going to specialize in home made sausages at 641 North Main Street
21.  Sunday: To 730 Mass. Lady Foresters to Communion in a body. Father Milbauer gives a nice talk about “father.” Well, I'll have a busy day writing orders. Art Mueller, Art Hazen, Donnie Potter, Eddie Weisheipl are with the “Brothers of the Brush” attending the double header baseball game between the Milwaukee Braves and the New York Giants, Giants win the first 5-0, second game called on account of darkness, 8 ins. 6-6. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Binder 636 11th St. celebrate 61 wedding anniversary. I worked 10-12.45, 1-5.45, 6-10 11½ hours.

22.  Monday: Rose Weisheipl is taking a weeks vacation.
23.  Tuesday: [TG] To Kiwanis luncheon.  We now have our luncheons in the Raulf Club Rooms in the basement.  I believe if this is where Joe Weisheipl plays.  Attended Centennial Directors Meeting at the Athearn tonight.  Did not stay for executive officers meeting.
24.  Wednesday: Hired “Lou Morgan” Clown entertainer to be in the parade next Saturday for Mueller Potter. Expect he'll do a good job, as he is nationally known. Ray Keown (Armstrong) is in town with new capsule vials.
25.  Thursday: Joe Riegers birthday today.  Born 1922.  Mama bakes a birthday cake for him.  Took Thres Froetschl along to the cottage this noon.  Otto and Emma Lemke are out at supper time.  I fixed up a line for Joe so he could fish, he had never fished in Germany as there is no inland water where he comes from.  The folks and Joe played sheephead, Mary Ann beat me three games of cribbage.
26.  Friday: Boys at North Store are busy moving to our new location at 74 Main St.
27.  Saturday: Today ushers in our Centennial Celebration with a mammoth parade lasting several hours. Had about 90 floats and 19 bands. Some of the floats were exceptionally pretty.
28.  Sunday: Twenty eight years (excuse me) its Thirty years ago today F.W. Mueller and A. E. Potter bought out August Klawun's business on the corner of Boyd and Merritt Streets and opened a drug store there across from St. Mary's Hospital.
29.   Monday: We are helping at the Childrens Picnic today at South Park.  This is held in connection with the Centennial Celebration.  I sold close to 8000 tickets and beleive those kids keep you busy.
30.  Tuesday: Took over at Kiwanis luncheon today.  Clarence Westphal had four of his winners of the 4 H speaking contest.
