Diary of Alfred E. Potter September, 1951

01.  
02.  Sunday: To 730 High Mass Father Milbauer.  Sermon on the “Sufferings of Christ.” Worked the morning.  Visited Aunt Mary this afternoon.  Sept. 3 Then to the cottage, picked up Annie Heip, delivered some Jail for Mrs. Robbins, Where Joe works.  Otto and Emma brought Thres Fretschl along, and immediately they play Canasta.  Annie Heip is doing well at it.  She’s been playing at Eddie’s with the Hazens.  She did make one error which really could happen to anyone.  She played a nine when 2. (written on Sept. 1 page) quite a number of cards were frozen in the cradle to Fretschl’s advantage, as she could pick all of them up.  Otto was a partner and it sure hurt.  Brand’s are having the Gilbert Gehrke’s over.  Mary Ann has the girls over and stays in town.

03.  Monday: [T] Worked this morning. (NOTE: See Sept. 2 entry. I really can’t tell what all happened the 2nd & 3rd based on the notes written.)
04.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon. Our speaker is George V. Dempsey Jr. President of Town Hall Inc. Tonight at South Park Jr. Hi School we hear “Americas Town Meeting of the Air” broadcast over Station WOSH and the network of the American Broadcasting Company presents “What's Wrong with College Football.” Speakers: Tim Cohane - Sports Editor Look Magazine, Roger Kram - Student Wheaton College, Harry Locklein - Ex 1951 Captain Army Football team & 1951 Class President. He was one of 90 students expelled from West Point for cribbing, and Dr. Charles Truck - Pres. McAllister College. It was very interesting. After the program an informal meeting of the speakers in the English Room Athearn Hotel. Thres and self were with Art - Marg Mueller at the hotel. Home at 10.45 P.M
05.  Wednesday: Five years ago today Annie Weisheipl and Florence were married at Sacred Heart Church.  We were to be at Walter Dodd’s tonite for a party but Dess Wirtz is in the hospital with a blood clot in her leg, Leo Girens all was laid up tonite with what may be a heart condition.  Well, the season of the Wisconsin State League (Baseball) is over and our team ends up in “Second” place.  We won the pennant in 1949 and 1950.
06. Thursday: [T] Donald takes Thres and Mary Ann to the cottage this morning.  Lawrence Kinateder and Eugene Sonleitner are out this P.M.  Also Vees Haveman – Jo Nolte –Mame Siewert – Emma Lemke.  Had a few heavy but very short showers.  Emma stayed at the cottage overnight.
07.  Friday: Temperature is low this morning about 40° for 41°.  Lawrence and Eugene are out again this time for the day.  They prove themselves poor fishermen but they did work up a good appetite.  Mother sure had a fine assortment of food on the table today.  Just learned official temperature this morning was 39°.  The clerks at the South Store are planning an outing at our cottage but are undecided as to what Sunday to have it, some favor Sept. 23 others the 30th.
08.  Saturday: Second Pig Fair today, another success.  Weather is nice.  This afternoon Thres and me visited Aunt Mary, brought a new prayer book and mags for her, Mrs. Ida Putzer was operated Wednesday (Gall Removed).  Dess Wirtz is doing well in 246 – Hazel Kleinschmit expects to get out soon from 237.  Visited Leo Girens at his home, Dr. Gunther has his case, still undecided what’s wrong with him.  Leo is in good spirits today and we have a nice visit.  His mother is also there.
09.  Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass.  Father Wagner.  Holy Name Sunday.  Took Thres and Mary Ann to cottage this morning.  Back to work.  Spent the rest of the day at the cottage, it was very quiet and no company.  This is Joe Baiers birthday.  I believe he is 47.
10.  Monday: Thres and Mary Ann back to town P.M.  Norm Brown and Bob Kniss are in for their usual weekly call.  Norm’s family is still out at the lake expect to get moved in some time this week.  Had surprize visitors in today.  Fathers Leo Sharp and Dominic Diederich from Chicago.  Had a pleasant time reminiscing about the good old days at the Laurentianum.  Thres plays cards at Vess Havemann’s this P.M. – no prize.
11.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon had Ken Seperske as guest.  Earl Clemens gave us some historical facts about the Fox River Valley.  This evening at 6 Oclock dinner meeting of the Retail Division Chamber of Commerce, then to another meeting at the Athearn to hear Vern Irish give us his new layout for better parking and moving traffic on Main Street.  Then to Emma Lemke’s where the So Side B M Auxiliary have a party.  Ed Binder and Joe Fenzl are there also.  Took Mrs. Tobobin – Mayme Siewert –Vess Havemann home, and then out to the cottage.  To bed at 2.30 A.M.
12.  Wednesday: This is Ed Fretschl’s birthday.  He is 66.  Took Ed and Thres –Emma Lemke – Annie Weisheipl to the cottage this noon.  We are treated to a severe storm, wind and rain this afternoon at 3 Oclock.  Joe Baier takes his wife Emma home from the hospital.  Otto Lemke brings Uncle Joe Heip, the folks have supper at the cottage and played cards until midnight.

14.  Friday: Sad news this morning.  Leo Girens passed away at 9 Oclock.  He had suffered much the last days.

16.  Sunday: To 730 Mass, then to work.  This afternoon visited Aunt Mary with Mary Ann.  Mrs. Ida Putzer was operated last Wednesday.  She is doing pretty well.  Took Ed and Thres Fretschl along to Fiss and Bills tonight.  Stood guard from 830 to 900

18.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon, Sam Lucksinger – Hugo Riese – Chuck Warning and myself at table.  Lawrence Kinateder and Audrey Ackerman out to our cottage today.  Audrey got three nice big perch –Lawrence a few minnows.
19.  Wednesday: Clark Hastings is in town, and naturally we have to have luncheon together.  Sunny Peck and myself ordered shrimp salad and what did we get, chicken Salad, a fine lunch for an Ember Day.  Clark got Shrimp Salad, no Ember Day for him.  Dropped in to see Mary Girens, and was able to do her a small favor, in regard to cashing Postal Savings.  Leo – Jerry and Mrs. Girens were with her.  Tonite out to our cottage to Wilbur Mueller along, Our water pump is out of order.  Lawrence Kinateder and Audrey out, no fish today.
20.  Thursday: To Milwaukee with Thres and Mary Ann and Eddie and Florence Weisheipl.  First stop Mutual Drug then to Maders for noon meal, took the ladies to town for shopping, Ed and self to McClurgs worked from 130 to 530 then to Telenews, saw the Robinson – Turpin fight complete, then to Cape Cod Inn for dinner and then for home, arrived home at midnight.  Was a beautiful warm day.  Eddie enjoyed buying very much.  Florence also accomplished much, Browers a new place to buy dancing shoes and a visit with her former dance teacher.
21.  Friday: [R 4 M     T] We are lucky to go to Milwaukee yesterday.  Today much colder and plenty of rain.
22.  Saturday: Work morning and afternoon.  We attend the Kiwanis sponsored show at the Oshkosh.  “Lorna Doone” Barbara Hale – Richard Green, and “when I grow up” Bobby Driscoll – Robert Preston – Martha Scott.  Took Ed and Thres Fretschl with us.  Stopped at Tads 9th St. after the show.
23.  Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass Father Wagner – Sermon “Why we go to attend Holy Mass” by Father Milbauer.  Si Propson to Milwaukee today to be on hand for the Wisconsin Pharmaceutical Association Convention.

24.  Monday: Took Thres to Mercy Hospital at 745 for checkup.  Then to work.  Visited her again this afternoon and evening.  Dropped in to see Aunt Mary and Mrs. Putzer.  Fred Loretta Baumgartner –Art – Margaret Mueller are going to be at the convention tomorrow.
25.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon Prof. Thedinga State Teachers College spoke on “Where are we going” His talk was how should we deal with Russia and where, in Europe or in Asia.  “Visited Thres again.” Had a number of visitors at Kiwanis today.  Our table George Savage – Till Kummerow – Sam Lucksinger – Harold Howe – Paul Smith – Alfred Le Fleur “Milwaukee” and myself.  Mr. Le Fleur is retired, connected with Schlitz Brewing Co.  Tonite Thres and I visit Aunt Mary.  Thres gives her a haircut on the face.  Mary Ann has luncheon at Aunt Annie Weisheipl.
26.  Wednesday: [R 4 M] Mary Ann eats at Emma’s today.  Thres is ready to come home this morning – bought – Dr. Wagner said she must stay a week.  Ex rays show a Duo Ulcer which should be healed.  So that’s that.  Visited her this P.M. had quite a chat with Sister Irene.  To Retail Division luncheon this noon.  Talk centers mostly on Christmas week hours.  Tonite to hear Casmir Franc and Roman Maciejewski –Duo Piano Recital sponsored by Knights of Columbus.  Charles Juculano is chairman.  Great Artists – Maciejewski is also a great director and composer.

28.  Friday: [R 4 M] Two men killed – one critically injured when Lambert Roznoski’s new Chrysler driven at great speed overturned on County Trunk A near Old Glory Farms.  Killed Le Roy Worth 20 – of 154 ½ Broad St. – Robert L Bots 301 Ceape St. Roznoski, critically injured is at Theda Clark Hospital.  He is proprietor of “The Roxy” Bar.  He was born April 7 – 1919 in Green Bay.  His wife died May 25 -1950.
29.  Saturday: Tried to get to the Cottage this morning, but no key.  Wilbur Mueller said he gave it to Ed Radke.  Ed left it in the clothes pin basket, but failed to tell me.  This noon we eat at Annie Weisheipls, Smoked Meat – Dumplings – Sauerkraut – Apple Pie, “delicious.” To the cottage this afternoon, everything OK.  Gave Annie Heip a box of apples.
30.  Sunday: Woke up with a headache, to six oclock Mass Father Wagner, no Sermon.  To work at 830.  Had dinner with Art Hazens family.  Little ones are well behaved.  “Carol and Jean” smile and enjoy their meal.  And after dinner they go to bed for a nap.  To the hospital this afternoon.  Thres gets another basket of flowers from Dad.  Visited Aunt Mary – Mrs. Putzer.  Said goodbye to Mate Abrams.  To work at 600 and after work to Otto’s Hi K for our supper.  We had large and delicious hamburger steaks.  Met Marvin Wiggins there.  He is now with McCarthy Paper Co.  He lost his job as President of the Appleton Bachelor’s Club last year.  He is happily married, will be 46 the 16th Oct.  Also met Bill Schumacher and Wife.  Home at 11.30, fell asleep reading paper – woke up 1.50 A.M.
