Diary of Alfred E. Potter June, 1952

01.  Sunday: [1 R] To 730 Hi Mass Father Milbauer. Graduates receive diplomas at 9 Oclock Mass. Donald's little boy is baptized today. Father Milbauer, Sponsors Matt Weisheipl, Dolores Kiesow. Name Donald Alfred Jr. He behaves well during baptism. Fourth Degree exemplification at Milwaukee.

02.  Monday: [R 4 M] Attended Kiwanis Directors Meeting at Raulf.  Plans are being made for State Kiwanis Convention in Oshkosh in 1953.  Worked this afternoon and delivered Solvite to Ed Sonnenberg drug store in Menasha.  Ed and Mrs. are both on the job tonite.  On the way home we are caught in a rain and hail storm.
03.  Tuesday: [T] Had breakfast at the Raulf this morning.  Its a kickoff breakfast to get about 300 new members in the Chamber of Commerce.  I even get my picture taken with the officers at the head table.  Tonite Thres and me attend the Kiwanis Fairwell Dinner for J.A. Breese.  He gets a projector for his 35 mm transperancies.  Tonite Gen. Dwight Eisenhower doffs his uniform to become a civilian and run or campaign rather to become President of the U.S.A.
04.  Wednesday: Well, Dr. Norman Kleinschmit has me over this morning for a check up and he also takes X Rays of my lower teeth.  Art Mueller tells meet Don and Peggy Mueller are broke and ready to come home.
05.  Thursday: This is another milestone for many High School students were graduating.  Marianne Mueller –Billy Mauritz graduate.  Fred Baumgartner is in a huff to Loretta because he had not received halo shampoo in fact so bad she cries about it.  Art Hazen delivers North order and to his surprize he finds Halo right on their shelf, and he showed Fred and told him not to be in such a hurry about telling people off.
06.  Friday: [1 R    R 2 M] We are again having summer weather, temperature runs 92°.  Appleton gives our team a drubbing today 15-5.  I work in the cellar at the store most of the day.  Put in 10 hours today.
07.  Saturday: Back in the basement this morning.  Joseph Ruedinger is laid to rest.  This afternoon to the cottage to do some cutting grass and also begin cleaning up the shore.  Took Joan Mauritz with us.  Then she enjoyed the day thoroughly.  The Brands have a lot of company today.  We have our dinner at Otto’s Hi K a luscious T.  Bone as only they can serve them.  Then back to work until 9.30.
08.  Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass with Holy Name Society, Father Wagner. Then to work at 930. After the midday meal drove to Omro to take part in the Sectional Holy Name Rally. Bishop Bona had a very fine Sermon. Father Bunkelman led in public prayers. Father Victor Kandy led community singing. Ed Galinbacher directed St. Peters Choir. After the Rally drove home and back to work at 430 to 930. Met Norm Brown at the Rally.
09.  Monday: [R 4 M] Kept busy pricing professional bills also industrials today.  Took Tony and Mrs. Paulick out to the cottage.  Tony and looks over the grate in our stove, finds part of it needs welding.  On our way home we discover that I had left the keys to the cottage on the table in our recreation room and we are locked out.  Laverne (Mrs. Richard) Booth stopped at the store today she almost cried her heart out, it has been found that Dick has cancer and no help for him.  Thres plays cards at Ostertags Tea Room.  The ladies also enjoyed a fine dinner there.

10.  Tuesday: [T] To Kiwanis luncheon, took Harvey Lohst as guest.  Henry Hughes, former Justice of the Supreme Court spoke to us.  Busy paying bills today.  This evening I took George Mertz to the cottage.  He cut a connection in the window and opened it and retrieved our cottage keys.  Back to work until 10 P.M. find Emma Siewert Lemke visiting with Thres.  She was in good mood, told a few of Bobbie Siewerts experiences, with paint and also the motor scooter.
11.  Wednesday: [R 2 M] Worked this morning and took off this afternoon and began to clean our cellar at home. Had Donald haul away quite a load of junk. Tonite we attend Judy Stillmans Annual Dance Revue at the Strand Theatre. They play to a packed house, also show a good picture in technicolor, “About Face” starring Eddie Bracken, Gordon McRae.
12.  Thursday: Sybelle Brown and daughter Susie are here to see Donald and Arlene’s baby and brought a little yellow romper and sweater.  Visited Art Mueller (T & S Tobacco Co.) at Mercy Hospital.  His head is in a cast and will be for eight weeks.  Also visited Aunt Mary.  Had a nice visit with Sister Irene.
13.  Friday: [T   R 2 M] D.A.V. Convention opens here.  Sent an airmail letter and fifty dollars to the folks in Parsberg Bavaria tonight.
14.  Saturday: Something new has been added, Art Hazen is wearing spectacles.
15.  Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass, Father Milbauer, Corpus Christi Procession after Mass. Monsignor Bastian announces the sad news that Art Hill passed away suddenly at 635 this morning of a heart attack at Mercy where he had been taken at 5 A.M. Mueller Potter have their picnic at the “Power Boat Club” today. We all have a good time, play baseball, I made 4 safe hits, Volley Ball, Horse Shoe, Shuffle Board. Art Mueller – Hazen – Baier - Kenny and myself work the evening shift. Took the Fretschls  home at 1130 P.M.
16.  Monday: [R 2 M] Rose Weisheipl got her new upper teeth today. She says its hard to bite with them. To Madison this afternoon with Art Mueller - Fred Baumgartner to the Lorraine Hotel to see the Rexall Holiday Display. Tom Flynn and Jim Erwin wait on us. It's a very humid day rain in Madison. Took the boys to dinner at the “Ace of Clubs.” Home at 9 P.M. Art Mueller did the driving. My De Soto hit the 18,000 mile mark today.
17.  Tuesday: [1 R] Took Sisters Alverna and Sister _______ plus Mary Ann and Ginny and Louise Abrams to Milwaukee, left the Sisters off at Mount Mary.  Met Sister Alvina Putzer there.  Stopped at Maders to eat then to Broadway Church Goods, then Yahr Lange –Paul Hayden is the only old timer on the floor, then to McClurg’s.  Rene Kimmel and Dick Lynch on the job.  Home at 7:00 P.M.  Its been a beautiful day.  Then over to Fiss and Bills to view the remains of Art Hill.  Had a nice visit with Anne Hilbert, Loretta’s sister.
18.  Wednesday: [T   1 R] Art Hill is laid to rest.  Fourth Degree Honor Guard – and Pallbearers.  John Fitzgerald – Lawrence Baier –Geo. Hlava – Vince Kempinger and myself.  Loretta kept up as well as could be expected.  This afternoon more cutting grass at the cottage and this evening busy with sending out orders until 11 P.M.
19.  Thursday: The South Side Business Men’s Club sponsors a ladies night. We are treated with a trip thru the new home of Baldwin Meyers on Washington Street. Mrs. Meyers parents Mr. Mrs. Maru Carol are there. Its a beautiful layout very sensible and livable. Then we inspect the Oshkosh Filtration Plant and from there to Sommerfeld Welding's new home on Jackson Drive. They supply oxygen tanks to hospitals. Entertainment and dancing completed the evening.

21.  Saturday: To date marks the 60th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Binder 636 – 11th St. We visit them this afternoon, took along Thres Fretschl – Emma and Otto Lemke.  They were married by Father William Bloom June 21 – 1892.  A unique cake with their family history was brought along from Green Bay by Theresa (Sister Laurice. Frank Jr. born 1893 has 16 grandchildren Ed born in 1897.
22.  Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass.  Father Wagner.  Worked this morning.  Donald and family visit with the Brand’s at the cottage.  Tonite we take a drive to the cottage.  Took along Ray – Ann – Carol – Judy Ostertag and Barbara Mauritz.
23.  Monday: Rain most of the day today. Received a letter from Parsberg. Ma and Emma Siewert go shopping this afternoon. Ma gets a new dress & shoes. Mary Ann dresses on approval from Hilda's. Emma stays with Thres after shopping. I took the folks out for dinner, but it took a long time to find a place to serve us. Otto's Hi K, Armin Ostertag, Schwartz at Omro all closed, ended up at Ray Robbins for a fine meals. The waitress gives me 10 dollars too much change, but I returned it to her. Had an hours visit with Uncle Joe Heip this aft.
24.  Tuesday: Its a pretty hot day today.  To Kiwanis Club.  At table with me –Eric Baller – Frank Uder – George Savage – Larry Buck – Earl Burdick –Henry Kuettner.  Donald takes mother to the cottage and Mary Ann and me follow after work.  Its been a hot day.  Donald and family stay until after eleven and we get to bed at 1 A.M.
25.  Wednesday: [R 4 M] Took Emma Siewert to the cottage this noon, Thres Fretschl at 4 Oclock then back to town to pick up Mary Ann from work.  Learn to play Po Keno, its fun.  Tonite we played both Po Keno and Sheephead (5 Hand).  Again its 1 A.M. before I get to bed, I mean couch.

28.  Saturday: Les & Mary Borish Silver Anniversary.  Left at 745 with Thres – Mary Ann – and Joe – Celia – Corinne Drexler arrive 60th and Lincoln Ave. at 9.45 at St. Rita’s Church where Betty Drexler and George Harden are united in marriage by Father Michael Drexler at nuptial Mass.  Then to Hillcrest Dining Room – 8612 Chestnut Wauwatosa.  Dinner at 1230.  Father and I have a few special Martinis, after dinner to Stan Demboviak 75th between Montana and Oklahoma.  Drive to Bay View to pick up Anna Drexler –Lovie Czekalski.  Evening took them back and Mary Drexler to Wisc. Hotel then back to pick up our folks.  Got rooms at Wisconsin 955-956.  Took a walk landed at the Big Stein had a few Steins then back to bed at midnight.  Its been hot and sultry all day.
29.  Sunday: Up at 9 AM, took a walk to St. John’s Cathedral in time for High Mass celebrated by Fr. Frances Berres.  Surprized Syl Dretzka, Secy Wis Pharm Assoc and Jerry Savage, McKesson after mass.  Had a half hour visit with Fr Berres.  He was with us in Rome in 1950.  Then for a long walk, Mary Ann gets a big blister on her left foot – Ma is troubled also.  Had dinner at Maders mostly Pork Shanks.  Had my car brought there from garage drove to the beaches – very hot and sultry then to Radomski’s at 330.  Had lunch there (don’t know why) then back to hotel, checked out at six home at 900.  Stopped at Fond du Lac folks visited Tony De Lormes.  They came in from Green Bay, I visited Bill Thiel drug store across from Tony’s.
30.  Monday: [T] Feels good to be back on the job.  Weather is cooled somewhat.  Bob can this brings news that he is being transferred to Milwaukee, to call on Hospitals for Eli Lilly Co.  He said the offer was so good he could not turn it down.  Norm Brown takes Bob and me to the Town Grill for lunch.  I forgot to mention that one of my front teeth bothered me for several days, and last night after we got home I jerked it out.  Father Mike, the Hillers and Mc Phails stopped at our house this afternoon.  They are on their way to Antigo from Chicago.  Father Mike said he is due for some new teeth Tuesday 10 A.M.
