Diary of Alfred E. Potter December, 1952

01.  Monday: Aunt Annie is operated this morning, we find she has a cyst on her bladder.  Saw her this afternoon she is doing well, a little drowsy, very hungry and dry.  She tho’t last night she could have a bottle of beer before operation – Sister said no! no!  Saw Van again today, paid 1000 dollar retainer fee on Kelly building, we must now wait to see what will happen.  Thres attends Christian Mothers Christmas Party with Thres Fretschl and Emma Siewert.  I attended Kiwanis Directors meeting, last one for me, my term is expired.  I work until 10.30.
02.  Tuesday: Annie Heip’s birthday today, she is 70 Ann of course still in the hospital.  Saw her this afternoon, she is doing fine.  To Kiwanis luncheon, we have a very good speaker Ed Konkol, executive secretary of the Wisconsin Good Roads Association.  He speaks on better highways and relief for congested traffic.  Thres – Mary Ann and Arlene to lady Foresters Christmas party this evening, and I worked again to 10.30.
03.  [R 4 M]
04.  Thursday: Visited Annie Heip this afternoon.  She is doing nicely.  Also delivered a loaf of Ma Potter’s famous rye bread to the Weisheipl family.  Uncle Joe is taking things more normal.
05.  Friday: [R 4 M] Had a letter from Father Adolf Wittman today.  He would like a special Kind of typewriter (Swiss).  Wilbur Siewert is now working at the Post Office.  He quit Wodhams about a week ago.
06.  Saturday: Visited Aunt Annie Heip this afternoon.  Joe Jr. stopped in for a few minutes.  This evening delivered two good sized coffee takes to the Heip family.  Edward and family are there and Bob, Mary’s boy friend is here from Chicago.
07.  Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass – Father Wagner – No Sermon this morning, only announcements.  Dropped in to see Alvin Kelly 84 Elmwood Court.  Haven’t seen him for years.  He has “Parkinson’s Disease.” Tells me he adopted two little girls.  They look like two lively little rascals.  Spoke to him about his building on Main Street, he wants $75000 for it.  This afternoon we visit Aunt Mary –Lizzie Hannes – Aunt Annie.

08.  Monday: [R 4 M] To 630 Mass St. Vincents Father Milbauer.  It is very foggy out this morning, it raised some about noon, but staid very wet all day.  We read that they are having heavy snow storms in California.  Dropped in to see Joe Heip this noon for only a short time.

09.  Tuesday: We are having a beautiful Spring like day not only in Oshkosh, but most of the state.  Ma gets her Christmas permanent wave today it and had to miss out on our Kiwanis ladies day program.  I took Kenny Sepersky along as a guest, but it was worth while as it was very good.  It was called “Fun with Dunn ” Dunn is radio announcer over Station WNAM.  Father Al dropped in at the store this morning for a little good cheer.
10.   Wednesday: [R 4 M] F Vanderpool was in to see me this morning about the Kelly building.  They want 75, I offered 70.  Hunk Demler opens up baker shop where Lange & Procknows butcher shop was years ago.  Pat Faust is clerking for him.  Had quite a visit with Father Whitman over the phone this morning.  He has a private line at St. Agnes Hosp.  Tonite we attended the Appollo Christmas Concert.  Donald Boese (boy soprano) is guest artist.  He sure gets a big hand, did some very nice singing.  We also visited Annie Heip at the hospital.
11.  Thursday: We learn that Alvin Kelly accepted my offer of 70000 for the building on the North east corner of Main and Otter St.s
12.  Friday: [R 2 M] Harry and Agnes Kujawa dropped in to see us tonight at about 9.45.  Had a nice visit, lunch were served by Ma Potter they left for home about midnight.  Agnes bought herself a nice dress at V. and K Fashions.
13.  Saturday: Christmas shopping is in full swing today.  I had a full day of work today morning, afternoon and evening.  Ma and Mary Ann went to the Oshkosh tonight.  I visited Annie Heip a short time.  Rose and Marion Weisheipl were there also.  Also visited Mrs. Mellentine – Mrs. Williams and learn the little old lady who told me she ran a boarding-house near St. Marys Hospital 50 years ago is Mrs. Geiger –Leon’s mother.  Also delivered two large coffee cakes to the Weisheipls.
14.  Sunday: To 730 Mass Father Milbauer.  We are very busy at the store this morning and also this evening.  Seven of the ladies from our South Store had a dinner party at Ray Robbins this evening, Maude Labudde, Margaret Tadych, Virginia Abrams, Grace Sitter, Rose Weisheipl, Marjorie Beck and Mary Ann Potter.  Party lasted from 6:30 to 12:30.

15.  Monday: [R 4 M] Eddie Wesiheipl is pa again. Its another boy born about four this morning, weighs 7 pounds 4 oz.  Had Norm Brown over for the noon meal today Pigs hocks, dumplings, sour kraut a la Potter.  Visited Annie Heip this afternoon, she is very anxious to go home, must wait another day or two.  Joe Jr. brought 6 bottles of beer to keep her happy.  Visited Aunt Mary and Mrs. Hannes.  Sister Laurentina tells me the Crib and Manger I donated to the hospital are in.  Gave Sister Irene 4 Rosaries.  Also met Father Al Trebby.
16.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon.  At our table Dr. Louis Graber –Dr. Ethan Pfefferkorn – Ozzie Witte – O.R. Jones – Leighton Hough –Hugo Riese and myself.  This afternoon Dr. Norm Kleinschmit pulled my last left lower molar.  That leaves me with only seven lower teeth.
17.   Wednesday: [R 4 M] Cork Weisheipl brings Annie home this afternoon from the hospital.  Joe and Annie are overjoyed to see each other, they both cried.  I brought Joe a little more brandy.
18.  Thursday: Took cookie dough out to Aunt Annie’s this noon.  Otillia Drexler has a breakdown of some kind at the Steiger home.  She has worked for them a good many years.  She is taken to Mercy Hospital for observation.  Rose and I have quite an exchange of words this afternoon.  I think it was really a misunderstang on her part.  I spoke about one thing and she answered about another.
19.  Friday: Dropped in to see Ray Novotny Postman, about establishing a Postal Station on the North Side.  Spent a few minutes with Joe and Annie Heip this noon.
20.  Saturday: Eddie brings Florence and baby boy home from the hospital this afternoon.  Got plenty of exercise this morning, an all nights snowfall and is was the wet and heavy kind.  Fortunately Donald came over to help me.  Tonite I begin getting out greeting cards, 50 of them, and then the weekly trip to Uncle Joe Heips to deliver two coffee cakes for their Sunday breakfast.  And to the Post Office at 10:30 P.M.
21.  Sunday: To 730 Mass Father Wagner then to work.  We are very busy at the store.  I started to get out Christmas Cards today.  Got out about 50, a very good start.  Also mailed out packages to Sisters Virginia – Linus and Melora.
22.  Monday: [R 2 M     TG] Had Norm Brown over for noon meal, pork roast and Dumplings.  We also received all very large Poinsetta from him today.  Getting the presents wrapped for the doctors, and its late again.  To bed by at 130 A.M.
23.  Tuesday: The driving today is poor, the roads are slush and mush.  Took Norm Brown to Kiwanis luncheon to hear Schmalz Friedrich tell about his latest trip to Europe.  It was very good and lots of comedy.  Norm took along loaf of rye bread, Thres made up special for him.  Donald and Danny take out presents for the doctors today.  Had an Air Mail Letter from Resi Rothbauer – Parsberg, she received our first package.
24.  Wednesday: Well this is the last day of the big rush.  The weather is slightly cooler which is a good thing.  I’m still putting up presents for the Msgr.  – Fathers Wagner – Milbauer – Murphy – Sisters St. Vincents –St. Johns – St. Marys – Mercy Hospital.  Its a busy day at the store is especially at the South, about 2500.  Close at six and then a little fun especially for Jean – Ginny and Elaine.
25.  Thursday: To midnight Hi Mass Msgr. Bastian –Father Wagner has the sermon.  Thres was quite sick through the mass, but managed to hold up until the end.  Service ends at 1.35 A.M.  We get to bed by 2.30 A.M.  We hear Ed Fretschl was in our cellar and upstairs looking for us.  Well we are still in bed.  Up at 935 to work until 1230.  Had dinner at the “Raulf Hotel.” Then to Mercy Hospital to see Aunt Mary – Anna Rasmussen – and Jessie Burdick.  Sister Eleanor is there also, to look after the folks.  Forgot to mention that I met Dr. and Mrs. Wilbur Linn and Rev. David Fetter and family at the Raulf.  Saw Ed Hurst thought he had gone to Florida for the winter.  Spent the evening at Bill Mauritz Don and family stopped here this aft. and we also visited Ed and Thres Fretschl.
26.  Friday: [R 4 M] Things are back to normal at the store.  William Wetterau died this morning at Art Redmonds at 11.40.  Born March 4 – 1862.  Married Ernestine Meyer June 14-1899.  For 18 years was employed by the Oshkosh Gas and Light Company.  Leon Geiger’s mother died last evening 915 at Mercy.  I visited her several times.  Born March 19 1866 daughter of Mr. Mrs. John Schmidt.  We spent the evening at Joe Baiers.  Faye and Geny to formal with Jimmy Poeschl and Billy Mauritz.  Emma Baier took a treatment from Dr. Fraker today.
27.  Saturday: Thres went to Dr. W.A. Wagner yesterday afternoon for complete checkup.  Blood pressure 200 over 120.  She is now on Reticulen – Barbtheo –Dramamine.
28.  Sunday: To 730 Mass – Father Milbauer and then to work.  Its a beautiful day, temperature about 27°.  This afternoon took a drive to Berlin and visited the Kujawas.  Mary is home from Marquette.  Harry shows us a report card.  It is an excellent report.

30.  Tuesday: [T] To Kiwanis luncheon.  Clem Luecke from Ripon is here to give us an impressive talk about “Are you an available Kiwanian” and also to install officers Ralph Witherbee- Pres.  Wesley Schneider Vice Pres.  Uncle Joe Weisheipl had his ears cleaned by Dr. Bill Wagner.  He can now hear much better.
31.  Wednesday: Very light snow this morning.
