Diary of Alfred E. Potter January, 1952

01.  Tuesday: [T] Up at 8 A.M. and attend 9 Oclock Mass St. Vincents Father Wagner.  The temperature is much lower than yesterday.  I worked from 9.45 to 12.45 and from 130 to 400 PM total 5 ½ hours.  Mary Ann is gone for the day.  Thres and me out to visit Ray – Ann Ostertag and family and also Bill – Rose Mauritz family.  Mary Ann is there also.  Home at 11.30.
02.  Wednesday: [R 4 M] Bill Haidlinger passed away at Mercy this morning at 10.30.  He was sick only 5 days.  Had a stroke.  Born December 30 – 1885.  We had many good times of Bill and Mayme years ago.  We own the cottage jointly.  Also camped at Gemüthlichkeit–Joe Nigl’s cottage and at Ripon with Bill and Emma Jess. 
03.  Thursday: A beautiful day, temperature about 8° above.  To Kiwanis luncheon.  Zala Miller our new president has a nice program predictions by our own Kiwanians for 1952.  It was a lot of fun.  Tonite we visit with Joe Baier and family.  Took in Bill – Rose Mauritz – Ray – Ann Ostertag.  Emma had a fine lunch.  Home at 1245.
04.  Friday: John Barlow 910 Minnesota St. was found dead in his garage yesterday afternoon at 4.45 by his daughter Mrs. Glen Travis.  He shot himself with a 12 gauge repeating shotgun.  Born Dec. 27 – 1877.  He was a frequent visitor at our first store with Bill Haidlinger when both of them worked at Paine’s.  We attend rosary for Bill Haidlinger with Joe and Annie Heip at Fiss and Bills.
05.  Saturday: [T] Attend funeral services for Bill Haidlinger.  He is laid to rest at Riverside.  It is very slippery driving in the cemetery.  Tonite we visit Aunt Mary at the hospital.
06.  Sunday: To 730 Mass Father Milbauer.  He speaks on Hope.  Worked the morning – back at 430 to complete orders until 730, after a bite to eat – picked up Joe and Annie Heip –Ed and Thres Fretschl brought them to our house for the evening.  Took them home at 145 A.M.  I had a most peculiar experience at cards tonight, the last one to bid, I couldn’t play for the least had only one trump, picked up and got the two old ones and won the game.
07.  Monday: [R 4 M] Mary Girens had a birthday yesterday, she was 50.  Thres plays cards at Thobabens this aft.  She wins first prize with 77 points.  The club is royally entertained by Rose Jungwirth Thobaben.  Emma Siewert has fun teasing Mary Fenzl, because Mary said Joe Fenzl went to Milwaukee and may buy an overcoat, after selling out his own clothing business.  Mueller Potter annual meeting tonight.  We conclude at 12.45 A.M.  Same officers.
08.  Tuesday: Up at 9 A.M.  To Kiwanis luncheon.  District Attorney Herb Mueller is our speaker.  He talks on immorality.  Russ Williams –Abe Kagan –Ray Baxandall –Ralph Becker – Glen Fadner and myself at table.  Art Hazen’s birthday today, he is 27.  Had Norm Brown at our house yesterday noon for pork chops and dumplings.  Mrs. Helen Franz passed away yesterday at 2 A.M. at Mercy.  Born April 19 – 1874 Germany.  Mother to John –Aurelia – Harriet and Mrs. Ted Patterson.
09.  Wednesday: [R 4 M] A very pleasant day.  Ken Seperski is here for his first call in the New Year.  He thanks again for the rye bread, Thres baked for him for Christmas.  Sunny Peck is also here with a strained ligament.  Thres is out with the Card Club to surprise Mary Girens.  This evening Joe – Emma Baier –Bill – Rose Mauritz – Ray – Ann Ostertag are over for their Christmas visit.  Party broke up at 130 AM.  Agnes Drexler Kujawa has a birthday today, she is 40.
10.  Thursday: [T] Thres is invited to Emma Siewerts this afternoon.  Maxine and Caroline Kellerman make up the party.  Uncle Joe Weisheipl has a check up by Dr. Bill Wagner and is getting along splendidly, blood pressure down to 170.  He also takes chiropractic treatment from Raymond Simpson.  Marvin Eberhart is 16 today.
11.  Friday: [R 4 M] Rose Weisheipl has been fighting a cold all of this week.  She thought she caught it at practice for the coming play at Sacred Heart Sunday afternoon.  Harry Agnes and Mary Kujawa are here for short visit tonite.  Johnny is having trouble with ingrown toenails.  Mrs. Mary Reischl passed away at her home this afternoon at 250.  She was sick 36 years, in bed 33.  Born in Austria Aug. 9 – 1866, married to Frank Reischl April 12 – 1891.
12.  Saturday: The first pig fair and market today at Ceape and Court Streets.  I did not see any out of town buyers, but a few pig sales were made.  Apples – Potatoes – Honey were selling very well.  Ma and Pa take in the Strand tonight.  Two good pictures “Close to my Heart” featuring Gene Tierney and Ray Milland – “Hotel Sahara” featuring Yvonne De Carlo is a good comedy.
13.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Vincents Holy Name, about 110 men attended.  Father Wagner wrote a letter from Bishop Bona on Indian Missions.  Worked this morning and part aft. and evening.  Out to view remains of Mrs. Reischl this evening, then picked up Ed and Thres Fretschl and out to the Weisheipls for a game.  It is very foggy out.  Home at 130.  Joan Mauritz has been Mary Ann’s house guest from last evening until tonight.

14.  Monday: [R 4 M] Mrs. Reichel laid to rest this morning.  Forgot all about Kiwanis Directors meeting and took lunch with Norm Brown and Bob Kniss at the Town Grill.  Rain all day, heavy downpours at times.
15.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon.  Rev. Rabe is speaker.  Dr. Byron Hughes passed away suddenly this afternoon at 1.26 at Mercy Hospital.  Entered the hospital this morning for a minor ailment.  He was superintendent of Winnebago State Hospital since 1939.  He was on its staff since 1933.  Born in Wyocena Wis April 28 -1904.  Richard and Laverne Blues are here tonight to play cards in the Schofskopf league.  Had not met them before.  Pleasant couple.  Scores Laverne 45 – Dick 46 Thres is champion with 29 my score was high 66.  Light refreshments cake and ice cream.  Mr. Booth must be to work at 6 A.M. telephone company.  Party broke up at 1 A.M.

17.  Thursday: Attend business luncheon representative Oshkosh Industrial and Retail Divisions of the Chamber of Commerce.

19.  Saturday: This is Ed Wirtz birthday.  Born Jan. 19 – 1901.  The Canasta Club surprizes him tonite, he receives a Hummel statuette.  Ma Potter is on duty to furnish the sandwiches – the rye bread – two cakes.  Home at 200 A.M.
20.  Sunday: Woke up early and attended six oclock Mass at St. Vincents – Father Wagner.  Visited Aunt Mary at the hospital this afternoon.  From then on I made out orders until 8 oclock, then over to Harvey and Viola Moore’s at 53 Waugoo St. to play tournament sheephead.  The scores were low all around, Harvey 32 Viola 42 Ma Potter 36 - Myself 38.
21.  Monday: Norman Brown is over today to have noon day meal with us.  He enjoys it as usual.
22.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon, met Mr. Richard Booth and Earl Austin with the Wis. Phone Company.  Ed Ledvina's program about television and what the phone company does to help and promote it.  "March of Dimes" broadcast on WOSH tonite from 630 to 220 A.M.  Al Embury does a wonderful job as announcer.  The Mueller Potter Quartet was called but did not sing.  Cost us 20 dollars.

24.  Thursday: Mailed two packages to Parsberg this morning, postage 336.  Official temperature is 17° below zero this morning.  This is Edward Weisheipl’s birthday, he is 34.

26.  Saturday: Francis Lamb is in today to make out Federal Unemployment Tax Report, also State Unemployment Report plus Voluntary Contribution.  Tonite on K.C. Fourth Degree Honor Guard Duty at Fiss and Bills for Jack Kavage.
27.  Sunday: Bill Mauritz has a birthday, I believe he is 48.  Joan Mauritz was Mary Ann’s overnight guest.  Worked this morning as usual, and part of this afternoon and evening.  To the Opera House tonite to see stage play “Good night Ladies.” We were not overenthusiastic about it.  They could have moderated their language.

28.  Monday: Jack Kavage laid to rest this morning.  Solemn requiem Mass.  Fathers Bunkleman – Berg – Murphy.  Pallbearers John Fitzgerald –George Ruedinger –Joe Stoegbauer –Otto Jr.  Stoegbauer – Tony Serwas – Al Potter.  It was terribly cold at the cemetery.  Noticed several nipped ears.  Stopped at the K. C. Club for a few warmer uppers.  Temperature 16° below.
29.  Tuesday: Took Harvey Lohst to Kiwanis luncheon.  Dr. Louis Graber is the speaker.  He explains about blood used in transfusions.  A Short meeting of the Board of Directors, we get the news the hotel management wishes to raise our luncheon price to 140.  Tonight we entertain Merlin and Alice Otto in the sheephead tournament.  Had lots of fun, some very peculiar plays.  Score is Alice 49 –Merlin 29 –Thres 44 Myself 57.  The folks staid until 130 A.M.
30.  Wednesday: My cold is not improved any.  The weather however has moderated considerably.  Florence Weisheipl puts on the “March of Dimes” Judy Stillman entertainment.  It is very good altho there are quite a number of repeat numbers from previous performances.  Ed and Thres Fretschl are with us.
