Diary of Alfred E. Potter May, 1953

01.  Friday: [R 4 M] To 645 Mass, First Friday.  Mary Ann was not with us.  Took Joe Rieger along to work this afternoon.  He is getting tired sitting around, and enjoys getting out to do something.  First National and Security Banks discontinue deposit books today, only deposit slips are issued, run thru a National deposit machine.  As of today I am raising a mustache to help celebrate the centennial.
02.  Saturday: This is our 5th day of rain.  Donald and Arlene attend the Northeastern Wisconsin Camera Club Council at Hotel Manitowoc.  Mr. W. O. Coon and son Bud, take Joe and me to their farm near Crandon.  They own about 240 Acres.  Nice place but Joe should have a companion to work the farm.  Met Ray Hoffman who works for Mr. Coon doing odd jobs.  I stopped to visit Father Pimiskern at Crandon.  We had our dinner at 8 P.M. at Shawano.  Home at 10.30 P.M.  Don and Arlene are back.  Our furnace fire was out this morning, first time this season.  Bill Mellentine died last night at 9.10.  Born 8/4 – 1882.  He used to kid Art Mueller a lot.
03.  Sunday: Mother is not feeling well, so we go to church without her, 7.30 Mass - Father Milbauer. Mary Ann is working for Don. Don will be taken up in the K.C. three degrees today. Our furnace fire is out again and Mr. Bolz is over to take care of it. I worked this morning. This afternoon to K.C. initiation. Chicago Degree team is very good. Had 96 candidates.

04.  Monday: [R 4 M] To Kiwanis Directors meeting, very interesting.  Norman Brown has dinner with Thres and Mary Ann.  Attend Rosary for Ray Winkler tonight at Fiss and Bills.  Fourth Degree Knights stand Guard of Honor

05.  Tuesday: Honor Guard Ray Winkler funeral.  To Kiwanis luncheon.  We entertain the St. Marys High School Team.  John Nevers Director of Health and Phy Ed Spoke.  My guest was Eugene Annis.  Also at our table Robert Foertsch – Noel Rasmussen – Charles Hoffman.  Joe Mottl now Joe Mertle gets a big write up in the Oshkosh Northwestern tonight.  He is an authority on photo-engraving – lithography – rotogravure, a photo technologist.  He is the owner of the worlds largest private library on the subjects, about 4000 in number and weighing about 10 tons.  Marie Miller, 1206 – 9th St. and Sylvan Hessel of Francis Creek are married this morning at Sacred Heart Church.  Father Kandy played the Organ and eight priests sang.  It was an unusual wedding, and quite formal, I believe Mary or Marie is 43 years of age.
06.  Wednesday: [R 4 M] Sophie Frank died this morning at her home 8 Linwood Terrace.  Born Sept. 7 – 1893.  Married Charles Frank Oct. 21 – 1930.  Sister to Mrs. Tony Ilk –Paul and Otto Dietzo.  St. Vincents School Athletes are honored at the annual banquet at the Gym tonight.  Joe Hemmer is M.C. Thres and I attend, with the couples who are usually invited.  After the banquet we take the athletes to the Opening Game of the Oshkosh Giants with Wisconsin Rapids.  We lost 5-3.
07.  Thursday: Gordon Raddatz is heir to his fathers estate valued at 39000 dollars.  John Bernhard, a schoolmate of mine at St. Vincents died yesterday at 5 A.M. at St. Agnes Hospital Fond du Lac result of injuries from a fall while painting a service station.  I paid my last respects tonight and according to his wife Anna no one actually saw him fall.  John was born March 31 – 1891 married to Anna Spanbauer Jan. 26 – 1916.  Donald and Joe Rieger took down our storm windows and put on screens this morning.

08.  Friday: [R 4 M    T] Joe works on our lawn today; he uses Krilium and Lawn Seed and uses Art Muellers rotary hand tiller to do a good job. Electricians in the city go on strike today and we are wondering just how we will be affected with our job on Main Street.
09.  Saturday: Wm O. Coon takes Joe up to the farm.  They take along a tractor and plow and cultivator all second hand but in good condition.  Joe gets back home about 10 oclock tonight.  We attend the church wedding of Yvonne Mueller and Harold Frank at Grace Lutheran Church and afterward the reception at Harold Muellers home.  Ed Voelz is given a royal reception and almost passes out.  Temperature is up to 82° today.
10.  Sunday: To 730 Holy Name – Mothers Day and First Holy Communion Mass.  Mary Jane Baier is among the First Communicants.  Finished mail orders this morning.  Mr. William Coon takes Joe up north again this afternoon.  Temperature 81° today.  We have our “Mothers Day Dinner” at the Town Grill.  Glen Fadner tells me his wife has gone to college today, she is the guest of her son at “Purdue.” We visit Aunt Mary at the hospital, she is doing quite well.  Mrs. Emnot and Mrs. Garbrecht also have company.  I have a bad day today, find breathing very difficult.  Took Thres and Mary Ann to see “Thunder in the East” with Alan Ladd –Deborah Kerr – Charles Boyer – Corrine Calvert and “The Blazing Forest” with John Payne –Agnes Moorehead –Wm Demarest – Richard Arlen – Susan Morrow.  Good Pictures.

11. Monday: [R 4 M] Temperature has gone down since yesterday only 62° this A.M.  Norman Brown is over for dinner.  Had a call from Annie Heip this morning, about her and Joe’s mother day present.  Thres plays cards at Irma Kolbus 244 W. Irving and tonite I take Leone Dodd and Thres to Council Catholic Women Centennial Party.
12.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon, had Ken Sepersky as my guest.  Till Kummerow’s brother A.H. of Milwaukee spoke on “Rehabilitation of the Blind.” He himself is blind, very interesting speaker.
13.  Wednesday: [R 2 M] It is much colder this morning, temperature is 31° that is a 51° drop from Saturdays 82°.  Sister Philipbertha called me today, she would like a new bell for church in Seilersdorf near Parsberg.  Also visited with Sister a Irene tonight, she is leaving for Rome tomorrow.  Took Virginia Abrams to the bathroom this morning to buy Home our Christmas Cards.  Took Mary Ann and Joan Mauritz along to the hospital, we visit Aunt Mary Ann also Bertha Policinski who is there for rest.  Joe Rieger came home at 12.30 tonight.  He is very tired and disgusted.
14.  Thursday: [R 2 M   TG] To church at 800 after breakfast took Joe over to say goodbye to Sister a Irene.  It was a lengthy visit.  Sister left about 930 for Milwaukee.  Took Joe to the Federal Building and procured a Social Security Card for him.  His number is XXX –XX –XXXX.  Joe was so tired he slept the rest of the day.
15.  Friday: [R 2 M] Work this morning. This afternoon Donald- Joe- Thres, and myself took storms off at the cottage- put on screens- and cut grass in front of the cottage. I learn we are being picketed at our North Store Job. Electricians strike is on. Rudy Haveman is in reporting on Attorney Wm Engler getting a location above the Security Bank. Had quite a talk with Mr. Coon about Joe. Mr. Coon has no way of providing meals for Joe and this means that Joe will not go back.
16.  Saturday: Worked this morning.  This afternoon Thres – Joe and myself back to the cottage to cut the grass back of the cottage.  The Brands are out too.  Bob is still getting chills from Virus infection he suffered some time back.  Agnes Hazen comes out to the cottage, brings the news that Art Look passed away this morning.  He had worked Thursday evening – played golf Thursday afternoon felt fine had a stroke early Friday morning early.  A great shock to all who knew him.  Took Joe to the Raulph tonite to see 3 dimension movie.  Joe’s clothes arrive at Mercy Hospital today.
17. Sunday: To 730 Mass, took Joe with us.  Donald and family are near us at least we can hear the little fellow chirping.  Worked for me the rest of the morning.  The river is lined with boats and fishermen, many from out of town all taking advantage of the white bass run which is on in full force.  Im back to make out orders at 4 P.M. had 10 phone calls before six.  Worked until seven, at 730 Art and Ag Hazen picked us up to go to Kaukauna to pay our last respects to Art Look.  Met Marty Unmuth, Harvey Lhost, Earl Fuhs, Norm Brown there, back home at 10.30.  Joe watches the house for us.  I picked up Joe’s clothes at Mercy, had quite a visit with Dr. Pfefferkorn.
18.  Monday: Took Joe out to the Fahrney Farm.  Bob Caldwell showed us all around.  They are milking 100 cows at the present time.  Also had a visit at the Novitiate with Father Pibole.  These visits took up our entire morning.  Thres is getting a permanent wave today, so we all had to eat sandwiches this noon including Norm Brown.  Mike Ostertag is also here to paint the new bookshelves in my den, and radiator at my store office.  This aft. to see Cy Brenecke at Paines, no jobs open then to Carl Binner at Morgans he hired Joe.
19.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon, could not stay for the program.  Art Hazen and myself to go, to attend funeral services for Art Look.  Art was born April 6 – 1901 married to Lorraine Raedder July 25 – 1927, also surviving 2 sons 2 daughters 2 brothers 5 sisters.  Met Ed Voight –Bernie Schwandt and Mrs. Lloyd Buhler – Ray Trovinger – Norm Brown.  This evening to another Centennial Directors Meeting.  Bill Petrie –Wm Wittmak – Ray Robertson made some very interesting reports.  Joe begins work at Morgans on a sander.

21.  Thursday: George Savage is in this morning about making a combination report for the Kiwanis Agriculture and Conservation Committees.  He is rather surprised at our company’s large operation.  George Eigner stopped in for short visit tonite.
22.  Friday: Mama gets a permanent today.
23.  Saturday: We have a busy day at the cottage today.  The Brands are at their cottage also.  Bob Brand takes a fall into the lake, he said everything but his head got wet.

25.  Monday: [R 4 M] Norm Brown is with us as usual for the noon day meal.  He takes Joe and Mary Ann to work

27.  Wednesday: Paid last respects to Emma Steinke today. She is laid to rest this afternoon. 85000 Ford workers go back to work today after a six week strike at Ford's Canton Ohio forging plant.
28.  Thursday: Had a nice letter from Father Gerald Walker.  He writes Msisgr. Will Renner will be at Mt Calvary June 7th.  This is Monsignor Bastians birthday.  According to Father Alphonse he is 79.  To Fond du Lac this afternoon to pick up Ophthalmoscope –Otoscope set at Bausch and Lomb for Mr. Thiess at Winnebago State Hospital.  Met Ray Cleveland manager of Bausch and Lomb Office.
29.  Friday: [R 4 M] Sent a box of candy to Alma Link and Anabel Wood for their help at the 4 H Safety Speaking contest.  A nice warm day.  Got out city assessment report – Toiletries Tax Report – Pay Day.  Joe Rieger had his first glass of lemonade today, he says its good.
30.  Saturday: [T] Memorial Day turns out to be hot and muggy.  Took Joe to see the parade this morning, I surely felt sorry for the marchers.  This afternoon we are at the cottage, Joe mows the grass Thres and I clean up in the cottage.  Worked this morning and part time this evening.
31.  Sunday: To 730 Mass.  Father Wagner Catholic War Vets to Holy Communion in a body.  Joe and we get breakfast at 10 A.M.  Had an exceptionally busy morning at the store.  Took in 657 dollars.  Napped this afternoon worked at 5 P.M. and took Joan Mauritz and our family to Raulf Theatre to see “Young Bess” in technicolor starring Jean Simmons – Stewart Granger –DEBorah Kerr –Charles Laughton as Henry VIII.  Co feature “Fast Company” Howard Keel – Polly Bergen about races.  Barbara Mauritz is 13 today we stopped at Joe Sosinski for lunch.
