Diary of Alfred E. Potter October, 1953

01.  Thursday: To work at noon.  Working on professional bills.  Treatment at 3 P.M.  Rosary by Father Wagner at Marquarts for Jesse Smith.  She looks very nice.  Father Wagner tells us she was confirmed by Msgr. Reul last Saturday.
02.  Friday: To 8 Oclock Mass St. Vincents.  Tony Paulik is here to clean our furnace.

03.  Saturday: To St. Mary’s by 10 A.M.  Just in time to step in as first in line for the 4th Degree Knights.  Bishop Bona over the Requiem Mass, Deacons of Honor Father Bunkelman –Father McKeough, Sermon Father Krembs of Waupaca, St. Mary Magdalenes.  Burial priests lot –Riverside.  Had a surprise visit this afternoon by Frank and Betty Drexler and two of their daughters.  Frank’s mother is also under the weather.
04.  Sunday: To 730 High Mass – St. Vincents Father Wagner – Sermon Father Milbauer.  Mary Ann worked for Billy Mauritz this morning.  I worked 5 hours today.  This evening we visit at Rose and Bill Mauritz to see television and I must say it was very good.  Joe Baier and family were also there.  We stayed until 11.30.

05. Monday: A head on crash between an auto and station wagon is reported this afternoon about 4.15.  Have not heard details.  Leo Muza is reported as dead.  Former Governor Earl Warren appointed by Pres. Eisenhower as chief justice of the United States Supreme Court, as successor to Fred Vinson deceased, is sworn in today as the 14th Chief Justice.  He is 62.
06.  Tuesday: Harold Howe is over to see me today, with the kit of his advertising novelties.  Details of yesterdays head on crash 4 miles south of town, near the Country Club gulf grounds, reveals that Leo Muza 120 Lake St. Louis Georgeson 23 of 234 Dove St. and his mother Maude Peterson 59 were killed.  Critically injured Orville Mackus 27, seriously Leo Muza Jr. 24 - 82 ½ Hi St.

08.  Thursday: Six year old Bobby Greenlease who was kidnaped from a private Catholic school on Sept. 28th was found yesterday in a shallow grave at the back of the St. Joseph Missouri home where Mrs. Bonnie Brown Heady has lived for several years.  She and Carl Austin Hall are under arrest for the alleged kidnaping of Bobby.

10.  Saturday: Well Rose Weisheipl has another birthday, and its 42 she is, but looks much younger.  John and Lucille Felker are married 24 years ago today.
11.  Sunday: To 730 Mass – Holy Name to Communion.
12.  Monday: [RF] To Marquarts to pay last respects to Helen Greenwood.  Had a nice visit with Homer.  Ed Fretschl Jr. is in tonight, he bought a 1951 Chevrolet with only 20,000 miles on it.  This is his first car.  Mama entertains the ladies auxiliary S.S.B.M. Card Club at our house today, 17 are present.  Emma Lemke stays for the evening.  I’m on 3 treatments a week now at the Curative Work Shop.  Monday – Wednesday – Friday.  Surprize ourselves, we go to bed at 11 PM.  Neither ma or myself feel very good.
13.  Tuesday: [T] Spent a very restless night, did not get some sleep from 4.30 on.  Agnes Hazen is now working at Krambos “Jackson Drive” as a check out girl from 4 to 9 P.M.  She wants to help Booz (Art) pay for a few things plus getting some Christmas money.  But tonite she gets sick on the job, is taken home and finds the children at home all had the same sickness she has.  It’s the 24 hour flu, getting all of us.  We finally hear from the Fretschls, a folder of Santa Clara.  Attended Perpetual Help Devotion with mother.
14.  Wednesday: [R.L. Schani] To work at 10 A.M. a very nice day temperature about 76°.  To Sitters funeral home to pay last respects to Lucille Schani.  Met Mrs. Geo. Lynch and her daughter Mrs. O’Connor there.  Took my treatment at 3 P.M. back to work at 400.  Cork Weisheipl took a peak into the office to wish me well.  He’s a swell guy.  I’ve always liked George.  We attend the first “Civic Music Association” concert tonight.  They sponsor “Rawn Spearman” a good looking darky from Tallahassee Florida.  He is a Tenor, with a good voice I’m not impressed with his program.

15.  Thursday: Another beautiful day – temperature about 67°.  Father Wagner phoned to take Thres and me for ride to his cottage, but I can’t get away.  Second day of our “Rexall One Cent Sale.” Thres and I visited Aunt Mary this afternoon, she is happy and contended.  Bought two place settings and sugar and creamer for Marion Weisheipl at Angers.
16.  Friday: [R L F] Temperature hit 81° today.  Ma is busy baking rye bread.  We deliver two loaves, also our Nesco roaster to Annie Weisheipls this afternoon.  Took another treatment this afternoon.
17.  Saturday: Marion Weisheipl has a beautiful day for her wedding.  She is united to Robert Frank Lichtfuss at 10 Oclock Hi Mass at Sacred Heart.  Father Bunkleman celebrates the Nuptial Mass, the ladies choir sings, Cork has the job of giving her away.  We eat at Joe Grable’s. Fine meal.  Thres and I rest this afternoon, this evening to confession and back to Weisheipls for eats.  Took Annie –the bouquets for bride and maids and cigars to the Legion.  We staid until 11.30.  Joe Rieger goes out stepping, home at 1.40 A.M.
18.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Vincents Father Milbauer.  Worked this morning, also visited Anna Drexler (1210 – 9th St.) she is still bothered with high blood pressure 240 and hearing is bad, also stopped at Frank’s, met his mother-in-law who is here from England.  This afternoon we take a drive, also took Joanne Mauritz –Doloris Heisler.  Drove about 160 miles all told, around Fond du Lac to and thru Manitowoc – thru Francis Creek stopped at Kellnersville at Kubsch’s for dinner, then home, stopped at Mauritzs for Video.  Temperature today 83°.

21.  Wednesday: [R 4 M   R T. Marx] Our nice weather is keeping up, temperature today is 84°.
22.  Thursday: Mrs. Mary Michel mother of Mrs. Joe Hanseter 952 – 10th Street passed away yesterday at St. Paul at the age of 93.  Father Alphonse Wagner took Thres – myself –Ed and Dess Wirtz on a trip to see his cottage on Little Lake Newton near Crivitz.  It’s a nice quiet place, right in the woods.  Father tells about some of the good times and also fun with Henry Troxell and his wife.  On the way back we dine at the “Alamo” in Stiles.  First big dinner I’ve had in a long time.  Home at 11 P.M. Nice moonlight night.
23.  Friday: [R 2 M] Took Rose W home this noon I learn that Uncle Joe Heip fell out of bed this morning about 930 but not hurt outside of a few scratches.  He takes it good naturedly.  Heard the Fretschl’s came back last eve at 730 from California.  The whole family was of the depot to meet them.  I stopped there this noon to say hello.  My treatment a 2 P.M. today.  Mrs. O Day is interviewed by Clark Hoban on T.V. today at 415.  Mrs. Clara Knopstadt is also interviewed.  I saw it at Fretschl’s.  Joe Baier gets a brand new Chevrolet today.  His Plymouth 1937 model, has 87690 miles on it.  Ed Weisheipl gets Joe’s tires and radio.
24.  Saturday: We visit Aunt Mary in the hospital.  She seems to be doing quite well and is very happy.  This is her birthday also; she is 81.  Thres baked a nice birthday cake for her and bro't her a new doll.  She enjoys the doll very much.  Had Joe Rieger help me at the store this afternoon.  This is my first attempt at work in the basement since I was hurt July 22nd.  We attend Grand Theatre tonight “Scared Stiff” with Martin – Lewis –Lizbeth Scott –Carmen Miranda is very comical.  “Roar of the Crowd” with Howard Duff is a racing picture of the Indianapolis Speedway also very good.
25.  Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass – Father Wagner –Sermon “It is a wholesome – holy – thought to pray for the dead.” A nice day somewhat cold.  Worked part of the morning and back to work at 430.  Worked 7 hours today.
26.  Monday: [R 4 M] A 15 year old girl, Evelyn Hartley was abducted Saturday night at Le Crosse while baby sitting for little 20 months old Janis Rasmussen.  It is feared she may have met with foul play.  Norm Brown is with us for dinner.  Menu: Pork – Dumplings –Cabbage.  Thres plays cards at Sofia Huhn’s this afternoon, no prize.  We had Emma Siewert here for supper.  The ladies played cards until 10.45.  I sent a request to Kiwanis Club for temporary leave of absence.  Worked 10 ½ hours today.
27.  Tuesday: [T   R.W. Dodd] Had a surprize visitor here today.  Karl Radomski on his way back to Milwaukee from a three day hunting trip to Berlin stops and has dinner with us.  It’s the first time in years he stopped to see us.  He looks very good and is feeling much improved.  Thres plays cards at K.C. Club today.  The party begins with the noon day luncheon.  Took a treatment at 1 P.M. forgot to take one yesterday.  Donald gets a pair of spectacles today.  He needs glasses for close work especially reading.  To Perpetual Help Devotion tonight.
28.  Wednesday: [R 4 M] Ross D Scamehorn has announced his resignation as president and Director of the Morgan Company effective as of Nov. 18.  He has been associated with Morgan for 18 years.  Brass has been elected president and chairman of the board of the “Home Federal Savings and Loan Association, Chicago, one of the largest of its kind in the United States.  To the Opera House tonight to see the Oshkosh Community Players put on “Bell, Book and Candle” Cast only 5 Actors all very good Donna Lee Wasser –Abram Nadel –Marjorie Bridge – James Toland – Robert Berndt.
29.  Thursday: Had a call from Sister Irene in regard to sponsoring “Frank Stampfer.”  He needs money to come to this country.  Also visited Aunt Mary.  She is willing to come home with me.  Had our corporation registered at the Court House.  Had quite a visit with George Young, “register of deeds.”  We attend supper at the “English Lutheran Memorial Hall.”  I ate too much and suffered for it later.  Thres and me visit shortly at the Weisheipls.  Joe and Annie are married 47 years today.  John Grimes from Winneconne stopped in to see Joe.  Had a call from Harry Kujawa.  He wanted to know how I am getting along.  Had a pleasant surprize at the store.  Johnny Gallagher from Shawano dropped in to see me tonite. We had good times years ago.
30.  Friday: [R 4 M] Forty Hours begins at Sacred Heart.  Thres Fretschl entertained Emma Lemke – Annie Heip –Thres Potter last night.  Patronized Eric Baller for a Hickory Freeman Suit this morning, most expensive I ever bought $115.  Met Northwestern Ad Man Ellegard and corrected them about our opening North Store; from Thursday to Wednesday.  Miffed that one just in time.  Took the folks to the Mode this evening.  “I Don’t Care Girl” Mitzi Gaynor plays Eva Tanguay with Dave Wayne –Oscar Levant.
31.  Saturday: Donald and Joe Rieger put on our storm windows at the house, also close the cottage.  Ma is very tired from washing windows.  Received two letters from Germany today, one from Joe Riegers Family, the other from Resi Kroll Rothbauer family.
