Diary of Alfred E. Potter August, 1953

01.  Saturday: [T] Ringling Bros. Circus is in town, gave Joe Rieger money to attend as he has never seen a circus.  The afternoon was marked by inclement weather, much rain and wind.  Otto and Emma are there.  Joe enjoyed it immensely.  Dr. Ray Wagner change my body bandage this morning.  Took the folks to the “Mode Theatre tonight.  A severe wind storm and cloud burst hit Waupun this afternoon.
02.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Vincents.  I had a special chair in the “Trustees Room” worked this morning and also this evening.  Joe and I completed the posting of the books tonight.  We have rain most of the day.
03.  Monday: Funeral services in the Rotunda of the Capitol at Washington for Senator Robert Taft.  Eulogy by Senator John Bricker, about 900 Dignitaries and Statesman are present.  Norm Brown is with us for a big Pork Roast and Dumpling Dinner.  His neck was not is seriously injured as he expected.  To date marks the Anniversary of Aunt Lena’s Baiers passing.  Attended missionary meeting at Mercy School of Nursing.  Met Sister Capistrana, Bishop Bower and the Trappist missionary Simeon Chang spoke.
04.  Tuesday: Did not get to the store today.  This afternoon Fred Baumgartner – Art Mueller –Ed Weisheipl –Vivian Miller and myself to Madison to buy Rexall Christmas Mdse. at the Lorraine Hotel.  Al Leonard is there.  He expects to get his old Wisconsin Territory back in 1954.  Ken Sepersky and Eddie Kohl took our orders.  On the way home I treated the folks to Dinner at the “Ace of Clubs.” Back home at 10 P.M.  We experienced quite a bit of rain going and back.  We saw the heavy damage done by Saturdays Windstorm in and about Waupun.
05.  Wednesday: [T] The big Shrine - K.C. Charity Ball game is played at the Municipal Ball Park tonite under ideal weather conditions. The event opened with a combined Shriner - K.C. Drill which was very impressive. Two innings of fun provided by Shrine and K.C. Ball teams. Mayor Voss was umpire. Several of the players who disputed the umpire's decision were met with a pie in the face or a dose of seltzer water. Regular game with Fond du Lac won by Oshkosh 11-10. 3903 paid admissions 6000 tickets sold. We had Don, Arlene, and Joe as our guests.
06.  Thursday: Donald and Arlene are married four years today.  Took a drive to the cottage this afternoon and this evening we took Arlene –Don and Joe to Raulf Theatre to see “Salome” starring Rita Hayworth as the daughter of Herodias, Stewart Granger as “Claudius” Charles Laughton as “King Herod.”

08.  Saturday: We spend a quiet 40 seconds Wedding Anniversary.  Donald and family are over for short visit, they bring a plant.
09.  Sunday: To 730 Mass with St. Vincents Holy Name.  Father Milbauer.  Worked balance of morning.  Spent a quiet afternoon listening to the Milwaukee Braves defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7 to 4 and 10 to 3.  Harry Hannebrink made 6 hits in 6 times to bat.  This evening to the Raulf to see “Band Wagon” starring Fred Astaire – Cyd Charisse - Oscar Levant.  Co – feature “Blades of the Muskateers.”
10.  Monday: Norman Brown is over for dinner as usual.  Herb Bathke 1011 ½ Nebraska Street died last night at 10 Oclock.  Born May 13 – 1896.  Married Lillian Knoll Oct. 29 – 1915.
11.  Tuesday: Making preparations for Sisters picnic tomorrow.  Another rainy day and evening.  Maybe there will be no picnic.  Visited Uncle Joe tonite brought him a little present, he is slowly improving.  We learn that his brother Max had a heart attack last Friday, and another after going to confession on Saturday.  We are back at the cottage at 10.30 P.M.
12.  Wednesday: Turns out to be a nice day after all and the Sisters of St. Vincents are here for their picnic, 12 in all.  Sister Margaret made Sacred Heart Badges –Sister Lothire Palm Crosses.  The afternoon was spent playing Canasta and Bingo, we had about three dozen Bingo prizes, Sister Salvina was the lucky one, winning 8 times.  We took them home about 8 Oclock.  Sister Romana who is been coming to our cottage for about 20 years, stated “today” was the best time she ever had here.
13.  Thursday: Thres takes Mary Ann and me to town, she picked up Emma Lemke –Thres Froetschl and Annie Heip brought them out to the cottage.  Played Pokeno and Canasta this afternoon and Sheephead this evening.  Don and Arlene brought Mary Ann and me out after work and took the ladies home at 11 Oclock.  Today is Marion Weisheipls birthday, she is 33
14.  Friday: [T] Made out store pay roll with Thres and went home at 11 this morning.  Dr. Ray Wagner remove my heavy body and arm bandages tonite and put my arm in a sling.  This should help to put my arm back in shape soon.
15.  Saturday: To 8 Oclock Mass.  Father Wagner.  Had a phone call from Sister Irenaea this afternoon and an invitation to attend 8 oclock Jubilee Mass at Mercy Hospital Chapel tomorrow.
16.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Vincents, Father Wagner, after breakfast to work.  Joe Rieger took in a movie with the Pemiskerns.  Mary Ann worked and we attended the postponed “Holy Name Hour” at the Municipal Baseball Grounds.” It was a very impressive ceremony.  Father John Mueller had the sermon, about 3000 attended.  It was a beautiful site, all sang and adored the Blessed Sacrament, every one holding a lighted candle, all other lights out except those at the altar.  Mrs. Stanley Mauritz stopped in to say hello, at the store.  Stan is cruising on the Atlantic.  Cork Weisheipl is 44 today.

17.  Monday: Norm Brown is with us for dinner.  Grandma Plank was put to bed by Dr. Hegner account of high blood pressure.
18.  Tuesday: Spent most of the day ordering Rexall items from Ken Sepersky.  Tres drove back to the cottage this afternoon.  Don brought Mary Ann and me to the cottage after work.  Larry Llewellyn really drove his car.  He liked the surroundings at our cottage.
19.  Wednesday: Annie Heip’s Bingo Club is at the cottage for the day.  Mary Schneider – Ann Drexler – Rose Miller – Elsie Kirsch –Alvina Putzer – Emma Heppler – Helen Drexler – Thres Froetschl – Katie Duex – Clara Andraschko.  They leave about 930 P.M.  Premier Mossadegh of Iran (Persia) who has ruled for 3 years was ousted in a bloody revolt lasting nine hours, many persons killed in bitter street battles.  Geo. Spanbauer 1343 –9th Street passed away at 12.15 P.M. today.
20.  Thursday: Drove to town this morning, had dinner at home.  Tress picked up Father Norbert Lemke –Emma and Mayme Erbes and Maxine Siewerts at 2.30.  Ray and family came out at 7 P.M.  Played sheephead most of the afternoon and evening.  Father Norbert is exceptionally lucky, had at least a dozen lone hands.  Don brought us out after work, just in time to have a short visit with Father Norbert.  Folks left for home at 11 P.M.
21.  Friday: [T] Tress and me made out store payroll this morning, then moved back to town for the weekend.
22.  Saturday: Joe Weisheipl Jr. is 46 today.  We left at 10 Oclock for Milwaukee to see the Milwaukee Braves –Chicago Cubs Baseball Game, arrived at Stadium at 12.50, had nice sunny seats in 2nd row section 16.  Game started promptly at 130 –Buhl and Cantrell battery for the Braves –Pollett and _____ for the Cubs.  Cubs one run in the 4th – Braves one run in the 9th on a fluke ball ready to be fielded by shortstop, that hit some object and flew over his head tying the game, it took 5 more innings, the winning run coming from the Braves in the 14th.  Had quite a time getting from Stadium grounds into the open road, Don developed hot clutch on my car, OK on way home, stopped it Otto’s Hi K for T Bone Dinner, home at 10.30 and very tired.
23.  Sunday: I went to 9 Oclock Mass St. Vincents, Tress to 930 St. Johns, Mary Ann 11.45 St. Johns.  Worked 11.45 – 12.30.  Paid respects to Matilda Galow, mother of Eldor.  Visited Aunt Mary at Mercy, met Chuck Garbrecht – of his wife and baby, his mother always wants to go home.  Then to cottage, arrived 5 Oclock.  Emma – Otto  – Thres Froetschl blew in at 700.  The card game was disastrous for my Tress, she lost 17 games of sheephead.  I attended bar as usual, folks left at 11.30.  St. Josephs School at Berlin is dedicated by Bishop Wm O’Connor.
24.  Monday: Brought Norman Brown to cottage for dinner, also Emma Lemke.  Anna Plank was taken to Hospital last Monday, she is improving.  Norm brought me back to work.  Thres picked up Mary Ann and me at Wirtz’s where we were having our supper.  We attend Oshkosh Theatre showing “The Girl Next Door” starring June Haver – Dan Dailey – Dennis Day.  Incidentally this is June Haver’s last picture before she entered the Convent to become a nun.  Co feature “Island of Triumph or Tears” Had a check up by Dr. Will Wagner –no sugar – no albumen.
25.  Tuesday: Thres and me get home at 11 o’clock, had a call from Vivian Miller turned out to be a 2 hour visit.  She would like to work less hours and not take on as much responsibility as here to for.  Spent a few hours at the office.  Thres picked me and Emma Lemke to take us to Winneconne Park to S.S.B.M. Annual Corn Roast and Picnic.  Ideal Weather, Program in the Club House.  Rudy Haveman announced club is 30 years old.  Chuck Nolan reminisced on the early activities of the club.  Les Borisch showed pictures of former Corn Roasts.  Drove to town at 900 picked up Mary Ann from work and back to the cottage. Temperature today was 92°.
26.  Wednesday: Drove to town at noon, get to office in time to receive semiannual check from Paul Martin – Abbott representative.  Picked up needs for cottage, call for Emm then back to office until 6 P.M.  Veese Haveman – Jo Nolte –Mate Shekey – Rose Binder –Mayme Siewert spend the afternoon with Thres and Emma.  I’m home for supper at 630, and after a bite to eat took Thres and Emma to Omro Theatre to see “Titanic” starring Clifton Webb – Barbara Stanwyck – Robert Wagner –Audrey Dalton.  Temperature today is 93°.
27.  Thursday: Another 93° day. Asked the folks to bring Uncle Joe Weisheipl to the cottage. Cork brought him and Annie. Eddie and Florence came also with Bobbie- Tommy- and Jimmie. Jimmie is growing fast. I told the folks I think he'll be a prize fighter some day. He looks to have the punch. The children had plenty of fun and Uncle Joe said it was much better here than home on the porch.
28.  Friday: [T] Looks like another 93° day coming up.  Made out payroll at the cottage.  Thres also pays our personal bills.
29.  Saturday: Bobbie Weisheipl is ___ today.  At the office at 10.30 AM.  Had a sandwich this noon.  Too hot to eat.  To Konrad Funeral Home to pay last respects to Irene Kiser, learn from George Konrad she was laid to rest this morning at 10.  This afternoon to Sunnyview San. to see Tony Pable.  We are his only visitors.  He is not looking too good, weighs only 106 pounds.  Mary Ann phones Donald she’d like to go along to the Outdoor theatre with them.  After a long conference between Arlene and Don she is allowed to go along.  For some reason however, ill feeling prevails on the way.  Arlene wishes to be taken home.
30.  Sunday: To 730 Mass then to work.  Took Joe Rieger along to the cottage.  Had invited Don and family to come out, waited until 5 Oclock, got tired of waiting – Joe and I go fishing.  Joe did all the rowing and the fishing, I was not able to, but enjoyed the sea breeze.  Got back after six find Don and family finally had arrived, they brought Arlene’s folks John –Lucille and Sandy Felker with them.  By this time we had made plans to go to a movie, folks left at 630.  No seats available at Omro theatre.  Drove to Winneconne, arrived at Lakeside theatre in time to see “Queen Bess” starring Jean Simmons – Stewart Granger – Chas. Laughton.
