Diary of Alfred E. Potter July, 1952

01.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon, Robert Savage with Wisconsin National Life Insurance Co. spoke to us on Job Security.  He is interesting to listen to.  Thres is at the S.S.B.M. Auxiliary picnic this afternoon she reports a fine time and pleasant weather at the South Park.  Mary Ann and me get our supper at Wirtzs.  Met Les and Jr. Borisch there.  Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower married 36 years.
02.  Wednesday: Took Emma Siewert along to the cottage this noon.  A hot and humid day.  Temperature official is 93°.  Pays last respects to John Girens at Poklasny Funeral Home.
03.  Thursday: [4 R] According to this mornings paper, the Senate passed the “Fair Trade Bill” 64 to 16.  It had been overwhelmingly been passed in Congress.  In states where they have a “Fair Trade” the nonsigner Claus is out.  Forty five states have "Fair Trade.” This bill was really passed thru the efforts of the National Assoc of Retail Druggists.
04.  Friday: [1 R] This is an ideal holiday.  Had Joe Baier and family, and Bill Mauritz and Ray Ostertag families out to the cottage.  Took the motor out a number of times and the last time we took Joe – Ann and Rose Baier with Mary Jane and Judy, I ran out of gas near Oakwood, did not realize for some time, Until I checked tank.  Armin Knoop helped me out and we did not have to row back.  Joe Celia and Lucy Drexler stopped in to say hello, Donald and family spend part of the aft. with us.  Took the folks home at 945.
05.  Saturday: [2 R] Sent a letter to President Harry S. Truman asking him to sign into law     Fair Trade.  Tonite we see “Lovely to Look at” with Kathryn Grayson – Red Skelton – Howard Keel –Marge and Gower Champion – Ann Miller at the Strand.
06.  Sunday: To 730 low mass St. Vincents Father Milbauer – no sermon.  Took Thres to the cottage also Joe and Al Biebl to measure up a picnic table for us.  Back to work.  This afternoon Otto and Emma Lemke bring Thres Fretschl along for Pokeno.  Mary Ann and me back to work for the evening, home at 1000 P.M.  More cards – sheephead until 12 the folks go home, to bed 1 A.M.
07.  Monday: Republican Convention opens at Chicago.  Scrap is between Taft and Eisenhower.  I viewed the remains of Henry Horn this A.M. to the funeral this afternoon.  Met Mrs. Horn and Mrs._____ Henry’s sister from Orlando Fla.  To Kiwanis directors meeting this noon at Raulf.  After Henry’s funeral to Mercy Hospital to see Sister Irene, then Joe Fenzl he’s back since July 3d - had a bad heart attack – then Mary Berger –then Walter Dodds daughter _____ rupture after giving birth to a little girl – then Aunt Mary.  She’s coming home to see us today, then Mrs. Abraham (Arno’s Mother’s sister – then Bill Welch (druggist) in room 123.  Bill looks very bad.  Doctors can’t get his bowls to move – then to see Frank Dichtl in 128.  He is looking fairly good, had a colostomy.
08.  Tuesday: [R 1 M     2 R] Louis Mauritz begins working at Bell Machine yesterday as cleaner upper.  Lorna Propson (Sy’s wife) had a breast operation yesterday by Dr. Steen.  Rev. Marlin Smith former pastor 10th Street M.E. Church dropped in to see me yesterday morning.  To Kiwanis luncheon today Sanger Powers gave us a picture of the operations of the Green Bay Reformatory.  Ken Seperski is in town took in to supper at the cottage.  Otto Lemke brought out Emma took Mary Ann to work.
09.  Wednesday: [1 R] Mr. Ostrander F.B.I. agent in the Dept of Justice was in to see me confidentially about Harold Prideaux.  One of his daughters has applied for a position in the office of the F.B.I.  Took Emma and Thres Fretschl to the cottage this noon.
10.  Thursday: Art Mueller – Joe Baier and myself drive to Wautoma to look at a vacant location as to the possibility of opening of drug store there.  Had a nice visit with Doug Hunt.
11.  Friday: Donald and Billy Mauritz cut down three spruce trees on the east side of our house this afternoon.  Our Mary Ann is working for Marianne Mueller tonite and Rose Weisheipl is working for Marge Beck.
12.  Saturday: [T] The heat is really on today 96°.
13.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Vincents Holy Name.  A Capuchin Father has a short sermon.  Then to work.  Donald – Arlene – Sonny and Marlene Polishinski drive to Dells and Devils Lake with the Oshkosh Camera Club.  Mary Ann works for Donald.  Took mother ought to the cottage this morning.  Art Hazen and Ag with Carol and Jean stopped for a visit this afternoon.  This evening we drive to the Omro movie theatre to see “The Pride of St. Louis” with Dan Daily as Dizzy Team.  Paid last respects to Bill Welch.  Bill surely had wonderful graces before he Monsignor Reul baptized him –gave him “First Holy Communion” Administered the Sacrament of Confirmation and Extreme Unction.
14.  Monday: [2 R] Attended funeral of Bill Welch.  Norm Brown is one of the pallbearers.  This afternoon we have rain and lots of it and it is very welcome.  A new cement sidewalk is laid in front of our North Store today in spite of the rain.
15.  Tuesday: Rudyard Keefe is laid to rest today.  Billy Hoeft won his first major league game yesterday 8 – 2 Detroit Tigers against the New York Yankees.  Took Sonny Peck to Kiwanis luncheon.  Program a Picture Life in Alaska by Northwestern Airlines.
16.  Wednesday: [2 are] Took Emma Lemke along with us this afternoon.

18.  Friday: [1 R] Eddie Fiedler is now with Schroeder Drug Company Washington Blvd.  He had been associated for years with Dick Bloch in the “Oshkosh Drug N Book.” Dick has taken on Jack McCain who formally managed “Muirs Drug Store” here.
19.  Saturday: Rose and Marion Weisheipl leave for Detroit this morning.  Rose is on two weeks leave.  Jean Powers leaves early this morning for the northern part of the state, expects to be gone a week.
20.  Sunday: To 730 Service.  It is a High Mass in Honor of the Patron St. of the Congregation St. Vincent de Paul.
21.  Monday: [TEG    1 R] Another beautiful day, a rather hot and humid.  Democratic Convention opens in Chicago.  Had Norm Brown out to the cottage for the noon meal.  Ma had some of her famous chop suey for us.  Norm expected to have a dip in the lake, but it did not materialize.  He tells us he had the retreat at Chambers Island last weekend.  Father John Mueller, Art’s cousin conducted it.  Tonite a drive to Wautoma, with Joe Baier and children, interviewed Esko Burman Pharmacist at Gene’s about Gene’s inventory and fixtures.
22.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon.  Had Ed Hurst listen in on our program.
23.  Wednesday: Took Thres and Emma along to the cottage this noon.  Back to work, back out to the cottage at 4 Oclock, cut the grass, made a general cleanup.  Don family out this evening, showed movies and slides.  After that sheephead until 2 A.M. and I’m very tired.
24.  Thursday: [1 R    T] Took Thres Fretschl home this morning and Thres gets more company Joe – Meta – Veese- Nolte-Rose Binder – Mame Siewert come out this morning.  Had noon meal with the ladies only 8 ladies, one man.
25.  Friday: The Democratic Convention is going strong, Estes Kefauvre runs strong on the first and second ballot. Dick Russel is doing well but there seems to be gradual gains by Gov. Adlai Stevenson of Illinois who did not want to be a candidate. The third ballot found him short only 3 votes to put him over; it was then Kefauvre threw in the sponge and ceded in favor of Stevenson. I was up until 1.45 A.M. (2.45 Chicago daylight time) listening until it was all over.

27.  Sunday: To 730 low Mass, Father Wagner reads a letter from the Bishop about new buildings to be erected at St. Josephs Orphanage.  St. Vincents contribution to this project is 6000 dollars.  To the cottage by 10.15.  Took Joan Mauritz along.  Outboard Motor Club have their picnic at Brand’s.  We join them for a while, knew quite a number of the folks.  Art Searnholz and his brother –Harvey Wickert, Melvin – Clara dropped in at our cottage – Melvin Horton – _____ Bork.  Don and family –Ed – Thres Fretschl – Otto – Emma Lemke – Ed – Rose Binder are with us.  Ed and Rose really were with the club, but spent most of the time in the evening with us.  Gilbert Gehrke and Erwin Erdman dropped for an hours visit this morning.  The club sure had a good time at their picnic.  We had wiener and Bratwurst roast at our place.  The folks played Pokeno in the evening.  Otto gave Emma a royal balling out over a penny.  Party broke up at midnight.

28.  Monday: Brought Joanne Mauritz to work.  In town by 730.  My De Soto hit the 20000 mile mark today.  This afternoon we are all back in town, Ma and me to Kiwanis Rotary picnic at the Oshkosh Power Boat Club.  Its a lovely day for a picnic, but the folks are late in getting there.  We arrived at 345 with Joe Drasal and are the first Kiwanians there, Harry Nonkervis for Rotary.  Free pony rides are provided for children.  I learned a bit about shuffleboard, my first try, won two out of three games with Irv Brown against Dr. John Mortell and Howard Godschall.  In baseball the Kiwanis beat Rotary badly 2 to __.  Had a nice Smorgas Board dinner.  Surprized to find Herbie Strycker running the bar at the Clubhouse.  Back to work its 745 until 1130 writing orders.  To bed by 115 A.M.
29.  Tuesday: [T] To Kiwanis round table at the Raulf, a good showing by the members.  Thres is on another picnic today.  S.S. business M. Auxiliary Card Sharks are spending the day at Dess Wirtz’s.  Our neighbor Louise Luebke – her twins and other 2 children leave for Des Moines Iowa to her mother.  Her husband is now free to marry.
