Diary of Alfred E. Potter January, 1954

01.  Friday: Not up as early as usual, attend 7.30 Hi Mass St. Vincents, Father Wagner.  Worked very little today – about 2 hours.  Had our dinner at the Town Grill.  Rose Schmidt waited on us.  Surprizing how many waitresses knew Mary Ann.  From there we drove to Neenah to visit Norm Browns family.  Then back home and took in the Raulf Theatre Walking my Baby back Home, Donald O’Connor Janet Leigh also “The Veils of Baghdad” Victor Mature and Mari Blanchard –Virginia Field.  Ended the day by winning two games of cribbage from Thres and Mary Ann.
02.  Saturday: Still looking for an error in the Annual Wage Report.  Located at this afternoon.  Uncle Joe Weisheipl had a setback this afternoon.  Dr. Will Wagner is there.  Doctor said he would not get over this one.  He may last several days, or more.
03.  Sunday: [10 hr.] To 730 High Mass Father Wagner.  Its a busy day for me.  3 ½ hours this morning and wrote orders from 330 to 930 then to the P.O. and home.

04.  Monday: [R 4 M] Saw Uncle Joe twice today.  He is breathing easier that seems to be in a comma.  Thres plays cards at Mrs. Lehnigles.  Norm Brown is with us for noon meal.
05.  Tuesday: Dropped in to see Uncle Joe this morning.  He is sleeping as he has been.
06.  Wednesday: [R 2 M    T] Saw Uncle Joe this noon, his breathing is much shorter.  Our farmers veterinary meeting is scheduled for 8 O'clock tonite at Clarence Denigers.  Just getting ready to pick up Donald to go to the meeting when we get a call that Uncle Joe passed away at 715.  Thres and myself drive out immediately.  Father Bunkelman is reciting prayers for the dead.  We stay until 11 Oclock to help cheer Annie up.  She is holding up quite well.  Mary Ann has company tonite; Joanna Mauritz, Fay Baier, and Doris Heisler are over.

09.  Saturday: We all are at Uncle Joe Weisheipls funeral this morning.  I am a pallbearer with Fritz, John, Frank Weisheipl, Les Luebke and John Paukner.
10.  Sunday: [5 ½ hrs.] To 730 Mass Father Wagner – Father Milbauer – Sermon.  To work by 10 A.M. back again at 4 P.M. worked 5 ½ hours.  Spent the evening at Annie Weisheipl’s.  Edward and his family are there.

11.  Monday: [R 4 M   11 hrs.] Norm Brown is with us.  Ma serves the duck –Joe won at a raffle some time ago.  Temperature is dropping.  I had a treatment from O.R. Simpson this afternoon for my dizziness.  Dropped in to see Annie, she is bearing up quite well.  Attended Holy Name Meeting tonight.  Father Spaulding showed slides of his hunting trip in Canada with Father Gehl.  Thres had four phone calls from Emma Baier today.
12.  Tuesday: [8 hrs.] Winter is here in earnest.  Official temperature is 7° below.  Attended first meeting of the cemetery board today at 430.  It was interesting.  This evening I visited Arthur H. Mueller (T and S).  Brought a Gutenberg Bible for him, donated by Eli Tannenbaum.  Art got quite a surprize out of it, a Jew donating a Catholic Bible.  Ma invited Aunt Annie – Thres Fretschl – and Emma Lemke in for cards tonight.  Donald took them home at midnight.  Annie does not like to think of getting home, without Joe being there.
13.  Wednesday: [R 4 M   10 ½ hrs.] Official temperature this morning is 8° below.  Raging snow storms in the east have killed nearly 50 people Monday.  Temperatures down to 27° below zero in Maine.  Snow up to a foot or more in many places.  Stopped in to see Annie Heip again.  Kidded her about having a cold sore, and brought her some carmel corn.
14.  Thursday: [9 hrs.] Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe are married by Judge Charles S. Peery in San Francisco.  Frank Lloyd Wright is 84 and of course a great architect.  When asked which of his works he considered his masterpiece, he answered “The next One.”
15.  Friday: According to Lt. Cyril Bouchelle a total of 686 accidents occurred in Oshkosh in 1953.

17.  Sunday: To 730 High Mass Father Wagner and is this a cold morning, it is 20° below zero but it does warm up some during the day.  We spend part of the afternoon at Donalds.  Debbies birthday is today, she is four, but still quite a baby.  Annie Heip takes tress to “Aquinas Club” card party at St. Peters this evening.  Mary Ann and I stopped at Heips after work, visited until nearly midnight.

18.  Monday: Took a treatment at Curative Workshop and learn that Mrs. O’Day is at Mercy Hospital.  Paid 5000 on our store debt today at the New American Bank.  Norm Brown is over for noon luncheon.  Thres plays cards at Elsie Zentners.  Edward Page 51, Supervisor of safety at K Clark died suddenly at 2 45 A.M.
19.  Tuesday: Donald drives to Kellnersville this morning.  Father Milbauer’s mother is laid to rest and our ninth grade children sing the requiem.  He returned about 4 Oclock this afternoon, said the driving was very poor.  Worked on Rexall Order with Ken Sepersky, also took him to Kiwanis luncheon.  Incidentally this is my first attendance since I broke my arm July 22nd.  This evening Thres and self to Knife and Fork Club Dinner at the Athearn.  Rear Admiral Ellis M. Zacharios speaks on “Our Future Security.” He is an able speaker, although I disagree with him that the Congressional Committee delving into Communism in this country has done more harm than good.  He admits however there are 50000 Communists and 50000 fellow travelers at the present time.
20.  Wednesday: [R 4 M] Snow today is very welcome.  Had a letter today from Father Edmund.  Nine Storm Novenas will be held in the near future according to my intention.  Work is at the Wis Axel had a farewell party for Art Hazen’s father last night at their clubhouse and presented him with a tooling outfit.  He was retired as of January 1st at 68.  Marge Weisheipl was on the job this noon, but I had to take her back home again, she is still a sick girl.  Paid 5000 on our store debt at the Oshkosh National Bank.  Mary Ann takes mother and me to the Mode tonite.  “Come Back little Sheba” starring Burt Lancaster and Shirley Booth.  “Taxi” is a good picture with Don Dailey and Constance Smith.
21.  Thursday: Visited at the Mercy Hospital tonight, Arthur H. Mueller T and S Tobacco.  He is getting along quite well, also Mrs. Cora O’Day in 233.  She is confined with a bad heart – also Amber Holmes, bookkeeper at Morgans, same as Mrs. O’Day a bad heart.  Temperature is 10° below this morning.  Annie Heip entertained for dinner at La Fonds.
22.  Friday: [R 2 M] Temperature to 9° below this A.M. moderates during the day.  Visited Dr. Will Wagner for a check up tonite.  Pressure is 130 over 80 prescribed Dramamine for my dizziness.  Jack Faust is now working at Fosters.
23.  Saturday: Over to see Marge Haverty this morning.  She is not feeling too well yet.  Told her to stay home at least until next Monday.  Lucille Felker – Arlene’s mother had a minor operation at the Mercy this morning.  Joseph Sheilinger was killed this morning at North Fond du Lac at 6.05, when hit by a Northwestern train while walking to the roundhouse.  He was an engineer for the company.  Born May 3 – 1892 in Hemau Bavaria, lived in Oshkosh until 1945.  Rose Schroeder (Mrs. John) 321 – 12th is a sister of his
24.  Sunday: [6 ½ hrs.] To 730 Hi Mass Father Wagner Sermon “I believe in God the Father.” Worked this morning.  Attended “Capping Exercises” at Mercy School of Nursing.  Met the three young ladies I’m sponsoring, Joan Diley of Omro, met her family also, Janice Renier – Green Bay – Naomi Wollangk of Oshkosh.  Dropped in to see Lucille Felker, also Aunt Mary.  Mrs. Gallagher is with her in her room.  Mrs. Gallagher is blind and hard of hearing.  Thres spends the evening out to Aunt Annie Heips.  Edwards birthday today, he celebrates at Hi K.

25.  Monday: [R Joe W.   9 hrs.   R 4 M] Art Mueller is bothered with nosebleeds these days.  We are having sleet this afternoon also rain toward evening roads are very bad, we had to postpone our annual Mueller Potter meeting, Art could not come in from the country.  Norm Brown is with us this noon.  Took a treatment at the Curative this afternoon.  Martha Hein Stauber begins taking treatments there today.  She is in the booth next to me.
26.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon, Dr. John Mook from State Teachers College talks on “Human Behavior.” Took another treatment for dizziness from O.R. Simpson at 3.15 P.M.  Looking outside tonite we note a beautiful blizzard and it looks as tho we are in for the first real snow storm of the season.
27.  Wednesday: [R 4 M] According to Annie Weisheipl, Eddie Weisheipl is doing very well for himself these days.  Florence takes in 180 dollars from dance pupils per week, Upstairs rent 15 dollars per week, Eddie salary 70 dollars per week plus P.M’s are total average of 265 dollars per week.  It is beautiful out this morning, a heavy snowfall during the night 4 ½ inches on the level.  Attended the “Big Show” put on by the JCC at the Opera House.  Well rendered.  Exceptionally good were Dr. R. Purtell as “Mae West” Henry Hanisch as “Hildegard” and Bob Koller as “Miss Stardom”

29.  Friday: [R 2 M] Had a peculiar experience with Ed Fretschl.  He became dizzy well at work and bought he was going to die.  Went to Dr. Ray Wagner for checkup found nothing wrong, recommended to see Dr. Chuck Behnke.  Ed flew into my office, wanted Donnie to rush him Dr. Behnke, I tried to calm him saying it was not dangerous, but Don had to hurry.  Dr. Behnke found nothing wrong either, so Ed came to my office this afternoon and we had a good laugh about the whole thing.
30.  Saturday: Rather snappy out this morning.  I did not get up until 9.30.  Was rather tired from last nights meeting.  It was 1° below this A.M.  Visited at Mercy Hospital this afternoon, saw Aunt Mary, no change there, dropped in to see Cora O’Day, and had a long visit with Sister Cornelia.  She has a nice room back of the chapel, and when she opens an art glass window she can attend chapel services.  Thres and I to Mode tonight, “Powder River” with Calhoun and Corinne Calvet and “Tropic Zone” with Ronald Reagan and Rhonda Fleming are both good.
31.  Sunday: [9 hrs.] To 730 Mass Father Milbauer.  Had a letter from Bishop Bona about the Indian and Negro missions.  Collection next Sunday.  Worked this morning – back at 430 thru by 10.45.  Then out to Aunt Annies, Thres stayed with her all evening from 6 on.  Mary Ann and me out after work, home at 12.30 A.M. I feel asleep on the couch woke up 2.30 A.M.  Henry Fredrickson tailor who worked for my father many years ago is 80 years old today.
