Diary of Alfred E. Potter March, 1948

01.  Monday: Donald is laid up with a cold today.  I take Mary Ann to school and then back to inventory.  Put in 9 ½ hours today.  Thres is on committee to Christian Mothers tonite.  Father Wagner pays me in full for the projector he purchased some time ago.  March comes in like a lamb.
02.  Tuesday: Changed my mind about March, we are treated to quite a blizzard today.  Civic Music Concert is called off until Sunday.
03.  Wednesday: [T] Yesterdays blizzard brought 5 inches snow on the level

06.  Saturday: Am getting the inventories whipped into shape.  Tonight I am called on to be plumber.  Lavatory in our bathroom is clogged, and badly.  Took 1 ¼ hours work and not much happened.  Ernest Siewert, father of our Mayor is 96 today.
07.  Sunday: [T] Lavatory drain finally opened this morning. Mary Ann's birthday, she is 18. She has Joan Mauritz, Dolores Kinateder, Emma Siewert here for dinner. Mary Ann takes Joan to the _____ this afternoon. Delores stays with us. Tonite we attend the Civic Symphony concert at the Recreation Hall. Donald is one of the violinist. Took Anna Weisheipl, Thres Fretschl, Emma Siewert, Joan Mauritz with us. I did not feel so well tonite.

08.  Monday: Francis Lamb is here this afternoon to begin work on our income tax report.
09.  Tuesday: Busy paying bills at the store today, also sent in a number of orders.  Put in eleven hours of work and I’m rather tired, and also took time to attend Mother of Perpetual Help Devotion with Thres.
10.  Wednesday: Francis Lamb is back for more work on our income tax returns.  Bart Heiss is laid to rest this afternoon.  I was over with Donald to view the remains.  Had quite a talk with Mrs. Heiss.  Joe Baier has trouble trying to start his car.  Donald pushes him home.  Well it is still winter, 3° below this morning.  Francis brings greetings from Harry and Berlin.  He saw him yesterday.
11.  Thursday: More cold weather 11° below this morning.  Getting somewhat caught up on my work at the store.  Put in 8 hours today.  Had company tonight.  Lawrence Kinateder and his dad Ollie are over.  We play cards and also take a few nickels away from Ollie.  This is his first visit with us since he’s lived at 704 ½ -15th and thats at least 10 years.  At any rate he told us this is the best time he’s had in many a year.  They left at 1245.
12.  Friday: Seven degrees below zero this morning.  According to our daily paper this is the 37th day of zero or below this season.  Put in 9 ½ hours of work.
13.  Saturday: [T] Weather is moderating.  Thres gets a new pair of spectacles from Pete Fox.  Worked 8 ½ hours today.
14.  Sunday: To 715 Mass at St. Josaphat’s with the Knights of Columbus.  And who do you suppose offered Holy Mass, our own Father Leo Ott.  A very fine breakfast after Mass. _____ Keller of Appleton spoke.  It was a different approach to communism.  Joe Beck took me to the store for 2 hours worked, and were we busy.  Mary Ann was late getting there.  Mother is with the Council of Cath. Women at Sacred Heart.  It is their day of Recollection – Conferences by Rev. James Gillis.  Harry – Agnes – Mary –Johnny Kujawa visit us this evening.  Dr. Bill Wagner born Mar. 14 – 1894.

15.  Monday: Theresa (Mrs. John) Piller passed away Saturday evening at 9 at her home R #1.  Born Sept. 15 – 1894.  Parents Mr. Mrs. Joseph Dïchtl.  Dr. John F. Stein passed away this morning after a short illness of gall bladder attack.  Born July 18 – 1881, son of Mr. Mrs. Peter Stein.  Married Freda Handow Aug. 29 – 1929.  Survived by Freda – his mother and 2 children Charles & Hope.  Attended the offering of the rosary for Theresa Piller at Sitters tonight.

16.  Tuesday: Carl Shekey passed away at Mercy Hospital this morning at 615.  Born Feb. 15 – 1890.  Brother to Ruben Shekey and Margaret Olsen and Al Shekey.  Dorothy Werbke found dead in auto in the garage of her home about 6 last evening.  Born Sept. 10 – 1895 daughter of Mr. Mrs. Norbert Werbke.  She was a skilled pianist.
17.  Wednesday: [T] View the remains of Dr. Stein at Konrads. Freda is holding up well.  Charles his son is not doing too well.  Also viewed the remains of Karl Shekey at Fiss & Bills. Veese Hofeman and Josephine Nolte are there at the time.  And quitting smoking for a time to get my reaction.  If I show a worthwhile improvement I’ll quit for good.

21.  Sunday: To 730 Mass, blessing of the palms by Monsignor Bastian, after breakfast to the store for 3 hours getting out orders.  This afternoon attended funeral services for Mrs. Ida Menzel.  My first glimpse of Rev. Schluetlers church.  Thought it would look more spacious inside.  This evening we have company at home.  Joe – Celia – Matt and Amanda Drexler are here for a visit to see how Uncle Al is getting along.  You know Uncle Al, well in case you don’t it’s me.

22.  Monday: Over with Walter Patri this morning, making out my annual report to Judge McDonald, in the Lyman guardianship.  Thres has a cold started.
23.  Tuesday: Rose Weisheipl has a bad cold.  Emma Siewert – Thres – Mary Ann do their Easter Shopping today.  Emma stays here for the evening.  I don’t feel well enough to go to church tonite.
24.  Wednesday: A bad accident at the intersection of the Ripon and Waukau Roads this afternoon kills 2 ladies and hospital eyes is 5 others.  Dead are Mrs. Antonette Boyk 57 of 120 Capron St. Berlin and Mrs. Sophie Zager 83 600 ½ Hi St. Oshkosh.  Drivers Eugene Boyk and Wm Zager.  Others with Boyk – Melvin Hoff 28 Howard Horsford 26 Karsten Olmstead 35 all instructors at Ripon College.  Eugene Boyd was entered in a speech contest at Oshkosh State Teachers scheduled for 2 Oclock this afternoon.  View the remains of Ben Farber tonight at Marquardts.

27.  Saturday: Wake up to find a snowstorm makes it look like a winter comeback.  Mr. Richardson who called on us years ago for John Masury paint drops in to say hello.
28.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Vincents.  Lady Foresters receive in a body.  Worked 3 ½ hours this morning.  Took a drive this afternoon to Farneys and Point Comfort find the ice piled about 25 feet in places.  Aloys Kinateder has a birthday today.  He is 53.

29.  Monday: [T] Package to Thea Rothbauer 1 Summer Suit 22 pair Socks 3 # Spry – 6 Neckties – 2 Shirts – 2 Canned Foods Postage 2.52 Also purchased a wedding present for Elizabeth Lynch daughter of Dr. and Mrs. G. V. Lynch.  One setting of dinner silverware 2750.
30.  Tuesday: Thres gets a new “Electrolux” Vacuum Cleaner.  Father Alphonse Wagner pays us a visit.  This is the first time he has been in our home.
31.  Wednesday: Not a very pleasant day.  This evening our gas furnace is out of order, took about an hour to repair it.
