Diary of Alfred E. Potter February, 1947

01.  Saturday: February begins with 4° below.
02.  Sunday: On the job at 7 AM to sell candles at St. Vincents, for Candlemas.  Father Ott has the service.  Joe Baier – Ed Fretschl –Donald help.  After service to work.  Sent out orders this evening, also made delivery after work to John Brandts, 27 Marsden.  View the remains of Florence Ploetz, at Marquardts.  Had quite a visit with her mother.  Met John Beerntsen’s brother.  Temperature is 9° below.  Thres attend shower in honor of Bernice Koplitz.  She wins a prize at court-whist.

03.  Monday: [E.W.] Art Mueller has a birthday.  He is 45.  Met with Judge McDonald in regard to the Harry Lyman guardianship.  Thres wins 60¢ at the Ladies Auxiliary Card Club.  Temperature is 1° below.  Had a letter from Lawrence Churchill today.
04.  Tuesday: [RW 2 M] To Kiwanis luncheon, our table Ethan Pfefferkorn – Jim Bruin – Dan Schreiber.  I won Glen Fadner’s birthday prize, a necktie.  Met with Walter Patri to complete the papers winding up Mr. Mueller’s estate.  To St. Vincents Mother Fretschl Help Devotion.  Had a letter from Lawrence Churchill today.  Temperature is 11° below this morning, a 46° drop within 18 hours.
05.  Wednesday: [T] Another below zero morning, it is 7° below.  Received a letter from Norm Brown this morning.  Took Thres to the Strand tonite.  It was very cool in the theatre.  I kept my overcoat on without discomfort.  “Kismet” stars Ronold Colman – Marlene Dietrich – James Craig – Ed Arnold.  “This Man’s Navy” Wallace Beery – Tom Drake – Noah Beery Sr. –Jan Clayton – James Gleason – Selena Royle – Henry O’Neill.  Preview is “Humeresque ” with John Garfield – Joan Crawford.
06.  Thursday: Ed Weisheipl is lady of the house today.  Florence is indisposed.  Dr. Helms makes a call.  Temperature this morning is 6° below.
07.  Friday: To St. Vincents 7 Oclock Mass.

08.  Saturday: [RW 2 M] Total Hours of work this week:         Joe Baier 62½                      Art Mueller 61½       A.E. Potter 65½.
09.  Sunday: [EM 4 M] To 730 with St. Vincents Holy Name – then to work.  Thres attends Card Party at St. Vincents, wins a prize.  Uncle Joe Weisheipl drops in for a couple of hours this afternoon.  Back to work this evening.  Fred Baumgartner is down to see Bob Voelz at Madison.

10.  Monday: I don’t feel so good this morning.  My ticker is behaving badly.  To Kiwanis directors luncheon.  Thres attends Auxiliary Card Party at Rose Schneiders, she wins 20¢.  Norman Brown gets back home tonight from his vacation at Dwight Illinois.
11.  Tuesday: [T] This is Donald’s birthday.  He is 19.  Laurence Kinateder is over for the evening and Donald spends his evening at Orchestra practice.  We have our annual meeting of Mueller Potter at the South Side Store.  I get my job as secy -treas back again.  George Roths Y.L.D. calls on us this morning, he is still subbing for Norm Brown.
12.  Wednesday: Father Bunkleman drops in at the store, first time since he’s pastor at Sacred Heart.
13.  Thursday: Had luncheon with Ralph Sperry at the Athearn.
14.  Friday: Dr. Norman Kleinschmidt gives my teeth another going over.
15.  Saturday: Hours of Work this week:           Joe Baier 70              Art Mueller 57 ¾  A.E. Potter 65 ¼
16.  Sunday: [DN 2 M] To 730 Hi Mass St. Vincents.  Then to work, Donald and Mary Ann also worked at the store this morning.

17.  Monday: I’m getting started with inventory.  Mrs. Anna Gohsman who lives over Birney Albee’s is 79 today.
18.  Tuesday: [T] To Kiwanis luncheon.  Mr. Evans talks on Washington and Lincoln.  He should however have had more time to compare them.  Art Mueller is in Milwaukee today.  He and Margaret go down with Rev. and Mrs. David Fetter.
19.  Wednesday: Norman Brown is in today, for the first time this year.  He’s looking very good, I could not visit with him as I’m busy with inventory.  Joe Baier is my scribe as usual, we’re working in the basement and its darn cold.

21.  Friday: Al Leonard dropped in today, for short visit.
22.  Saturday: Joe Baier has an upset this morning, and it looks like he’d better take arrest for a while.  Thres and self over to Fretschl’s to see Grandpa.  He does’nt look too bad.  Hours of work this week.  Joe Baier 55 ¼                   Art Mueller 62 ¼       A.E. Potter 67 ½
23.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Vincents, then to work.

25.  Tuesday: Could not go to Kiwanis luncheon.

27.  Thursday: Took inventory at the Harry Lyman residence, 339 Vine St. this afternoon.  Not much there to take, outside of mostly worn out furniture.  William G. Cotanche former local druggist passed away last night at the home of his daughter Ethel Behrend 90 Western Ave.  Born in Brushville Wis. April 2 – 1865.  We purchased our west side store from him in 1921.
28.  Friday: The last day of February brings many things to do.  Got out cosmetics tax report –paid Real estate and personal property taxes for the firm.  Charles Warren (Cenol Rep.) is here for his order, also Wampoles and McKesson salesmen.  Delivered Sunbeam Mixmaster to Joe Baiers today, a surprise for Emma.  Rose Weisheipl leaves for Minneapolis tonight.
