Diary of Alfred E. Potter July, 1947

01.  Tuesday: More work in the basement in the store.
02.  Wednesday: Joe Weisheipl Sr. takes the folks go to the cottage.  Emma Siewert and Annie Heip are among our guests.  Had quite a game of cards tonight.  Joe Heip is lucky and I’m a little ahead.  Party broke up at 2 A.M.
03.  Thursday: Got our Chrysler back this afternoon and took the Fretschl’s along to the cottage.  More cards tonight and again its 130 A.M.  Those lady sure can take it.  Almost forgot to mention Sonny Polchinski is Donald’s guest at the cottage.
04.  Friday: Got up about 9 this morning.  Its a pleasant but quiet holiday.  We move back to town this evening

06.  To 730 Mass St. Vincents.  Thres and Donald are up for the 6 Oclock Mass.  Worked until 12.30.  Emma Siewert is our guest today.  I visited Mr. Lyman at the County Home – took Lawrence Kinateder along for the ride.  Thres –Mary Ann – and Emma take in the Strand to see “Cheyenne.” I worked until 930.

08.  Tuesday: The folks are back at the cottage.  Emma Siewert and Dolores Kinateder our guests.
09.  Wednesday: Carol Ostertag is 5 years of age today.  She has a party for her little friends.  I took Aunt Lena and Mary out to Anns for a visit.  Left with Aunt Lena to the cottage about 430 P.M.  Took Dolores K and Mary Ann for a boat ride about 7 P.M. did some casting, caught a nice pike, but only one.

12.  Saturday: Another busy day.  Note chance for time off.  Put in 68 ½ hours this week.
13.  Sunday: To 730 Holy Name Mass, then to work. Both Male and Mixed Choirs have their outing at our cottage today. Monsignor Bastian, Father Alphonse Wagner- Josephine- Madeline Bastian are present. About 75 people attend the outing. Temperature is 90°. Rain this afternoon about 10 minutes, tonite one hour. Took moving pictures this afternoon. Folks leave for home about 10 P.M. They all enjoyed a pleasant time according to reports.

15.  Tuesday: [T] The folks are back at the cottage.  Emma Siewert is mothers guest for the week.
16.  Wednesday: Busy most of the day.  Took Thres Fretchel along to the cottage tonite.  We find Clara Lemke – Annie Weisheipl, Clara’s little niece Carrine Blodgett are there.  Carrine is 5 today, tells me, I must sing “Happy Birthday” to her.  Pretty cute.  Uncle Joe Weisheipl comes about 9 P.M. after a meeting.  The folks are ready for bed at 230 AM.  And I'm very tired
17.  Thursday: Requiem is offered for Mother Katherine Holzbauer are at St. Vincents by Msgr. Bastian.  Aloys Mugerauer –Joe and Matt Drexler are at the cottage early this morning to go fishing.  They get a few pickerel, not many perch.  Temperature (official) is at 90° today.
18.  Friday: [T] Little Joanne Roszek is 3 years old today, she tells me. Well, she gets a nickel and so do Bobby and Joey. According to reports picketing at Foster Lothman factory has stopped. The strike began April 24, 1946.
19.  Saturday: Another busy week is ended, worked to 62 hours.  Walter Geigowski – brother to Mrs. Jackish our neighbor, is married today at Chicago.  Capt. Ernest R Vader passed away this morning at his home at 6.45.  Born Sept. 5 – 1884 Muskato Kansas.  Mrs. George Webster is a daughter survivor.
20.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Vincents and to work. The Baiers - Maurtiz, and Ostertag families have their outing at our cottage. It rained this morning, but a little rain did not stop them. Donald Jungen is 21 years of age today.

22.  Tuesday: The folks move back to the cottage.  Emma Siewert and Dolores Kinateder go along, as guests.
23.  Wednesday: Took Donald along to Green Bay to look over the Rexall holiday display at the Hotel Northland.  Stopped at Kaukauna for lunch, also visited the Look’s Drug Store.  Al Leonard and Ken Siperski are at the Northland.  After we returned home about 6 P.M. and had supper took Joe and Annie Weisheipl along to the cottage.  They staid overnite.  Played cards until 1230 to bed at 115.
24.  Thursday: Ladies of the South Side Business Mens Auxiliary enjoy at outing at the cottage. Their are eighteen women present. Twenty-seven (27) coal miners are killed today in a mine at West Franfort, Ill. The mine is operated by the “Old Ben Coal Company. It was a gas explosion in mine No. 8 and the dead were found about 1 ½ miles south of the main entrance and 500 feet underground.
25.  Friday: New State Tax on liquors and wines is in effect today, amounts to 20 cents per th and 12 ½ cents per pint on liquors. Jacqueline Mauritz is 6 years of age today.
26.  Saturday: [T] Richard Mueller is in town over the weekend. He has his little daughter Hollis with him. He is now stationed at Great Lakes. Worked all day, put in 64 hours this week. Temperature is up to 91° today. Elsie Meixner at the South Store is to be hospitalized this coming week. Sever electrical storms put our electricity out of commission from 930 this evening until 2 A.M. Sunday.
27.  Sunday: To 730 Mass as usual at St. Vincents, then to work.  Childrens picnic by Ohio Street Merchants is a grand success.  Menominee Park as many picnic parties this afternoon.

29.  Tuesday: [T] Norman Brown has a birthday.  He is 39.  Kenn Siperski is in town today.  He has a new car.  I think it’s an Oldsmobile.  Had him as my guest a Kiwanis luncheon.  Temperature is 91° today.  Naomi Mueller Beattie is helping out at the store today.  Thres moves back to the cottage with Emma Siewert and Mary Ann.  Aunt Lena is here to keep Mary company.
30.  Wednesday: Had company again today.  Uncle Joe Weisheipl – Annie and Thres Fretschl come out at 5 this afternoon.  Cards are again in order.  The folks are ready for bed at 2 A.M.
