Diary of Alfred E. Potter October, 1946

01.  Tuesday: The O.P.A. and hotels and restaurants are getting into each others hair about prices for meals with meat.  O.P.A. wants prices rolled back to 1943 levels.  Hotels and restaurants threaten to close it no relief is given.  Attended Kiwanis luncheon Carl Schmitt – George Savage –Sid Drefman –Edin Ledvina and myself, our table.  Pictures of Packers – Cleveland Rams football game is shown by Cyril Bouchelle.
02.  Wednesday: [T] Larry Gerdes (Nyal Man) is in town.  Attended Boy Scout Commissioners meeting at Dan Schreiber’s home, 731 Hi St..
03. Thursday: Ed Fretschl  paints room upstairs at the Mueller home.  Eddie Lange with Eli Lilly Company dropped in to say hello.  He was with Bob Kniss our regular caller for Lilly.  Larry Gerdes takes an order from us for a cosmetic case.  An American overseas airliner crashes into a mountainside in New Foundland all aboard were killed, 39 in all.  Quite a number or wives and children of G I’s who were on their way to join their husbands and fathers in Europe.  Mrs. Ruth Schmidt 36 and her son Frank 11 from Kenosha Wis. are among the dead.

05.  Saturday: Was kept very busy all day.  This evening took Thres and Mary Ann to the Oshkosh “Courage of Lassie” in technicolor and “The Last Chance” a picture of German and Italian refugees trying to get into Switzerland during the war is very true to life.
06.  Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass St. Vincents then to work.  Margaret Voelz Hanson and Carl move to Stevens Point today.  About 430 we take a drive to Neenah – Menasha – Appleton, looked over some of the G I Homes in Appleton, 35 of them on a small city plot.  Had Thres Fretschl  – Aunt Lena Baier – Annie Heip over for cards tonight.  Took them home at 1 A.M.  Forgot to mention Mary Ann got very hungry on the way home between Neenah and Oshkosh, stopped at the “Town Grill” for a nice meal.  Picked up Annie Heip – Aunt Lena and Thres Fretschl .

07.  Monday: [TEG] Father Theodore J. Pufahl passed away at Mercy Hospital this morning at 815.  Born March 29 – 1874 Lebinske Germany.  Ordained June 10 – 1906 by Bishop Fox.  After his ordination he was assistant at St. Vincents under Father Adolph Wibbert.  Father Pufahl accompanied John Nuernberg and myself when we entered St. Lawrence College Mt. Calvary in 1906.  He retired in 1939 and bought a home at 945 South Park Ave.  Getting bills lined up at the store for payment.  Worked 10 hours until 10 P.M.  Thres attends card club this afternoon and Christian Mothers guest night at St. Vincents.
08.  Tuesday: Harry Ferry is in town.  He is my guest at Kiwanis luncheon.  Attended Perpetual Help Devotion with Thres.  Worked 10 hours to 10.30 P.M.
09.  Wednesday: Aunt Lena is here to do some housecleaning.  Weather is lovely these days.  Busy until 11.15 tonight worked 12 hours.  Took Thres – Marianne – Aunt Lena to Sacred Heart Church to view remains of Father Theo. Pufahl.

10.  Thursday: Rose Weisheipl has a birthday, she has completed 35 years of life.

12.  Saturday: To the Strand this evening “She wrote the Book” stars Joan Davis – Jack Oakie –Mischa Auer.  “A letter for Evie” stars Marcia Hunt –John Carroll – Hume Cronyn
13.  Sunday: To 7:30 Mass St. Vincents Rev. Monsignor Bastian offered the Mass. Then to work until 1230.  The Winnebago County Airport is dedicated today.  The weather is grand.  Frank Keefe is M.C.  General Carl Spaatz Supreme Commander of the U.S. Air Forces is here to speak.  The Appolls Chorus sings. Merrell Lewis directed.  Flag donated by Cong.  Keefe had been flown over the nations capitol this last week.  More work tonite, Aunt Lena –Annie Heip are here for cards.  They always go home at 11 Oclock that manage to make it by 1230.  Donald takes them home.

14.  Monday: [T] Completed our Home Inventoried last night.  Had Ed Binder over this morning to make adjustments.
15.  Tuesday: Bob Kriz is the speaker at todays Kiwanis luncheon.  Our table Harry Bruegger –Jessie Pierce – Dave Johnson – Ozzie Witte –Norman Rehder – myself and Michael Anderson our Jr. Kiwanian.
16.  Wednesday: Sears Roebuck open their new superstore corner Jefferson and Merritt.  Free doughnuts and coffee for every one.  Had Norm Brown over for the noonday meal.  Thres had a half chicken for us.  Mary Ann and myself and mama attend the Oshkosh “Breakfast in Hollywood” features Tom Brenneman – Bonita Granville – Ray Walburn – Edward Ryan – Billie Burke –Zasu Pitts – Heddy Hopper – Andy Russell –Beulah Bondi – Spike Jones –King Cole Trio.  “Man in Great” an English Picture with James Mason – Margaret Lockwood.
17.  Thursday: [T] Aunt Lena is here to help with house cleaning.
18.  Friday: This is a lovely day, the ladies do some more house cleaning.  I had a short visit with Sister Meinrada this morning.  She is at St. Mary’s Home.
19.  Saturday: Had a short visit with Monsignor Bastian this morning.  He is feeling much better and is gaining strength.  Took in the movies at the Oshkosh tonite.  “Canyon Passage” in technicolor stars Dana Andrews as Logan –Brian Donlevy as Cambrose – Susan Hayward as Lucy –Patricia R.O.f, Andy Devine and the Devine kids – Tad and Denny.  “Slightly Scandalous” stars Fred Brady –Sheila Ryan – Paula Drew.
20.  Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass St. Vincents, then to work until 12.30.  About 345 left for drive, stopped it Fond du Lac, “Dana and Worms” Fred Worm is on the job, then through Rosendale – Ripon and Berlin.  Stopped at Hotel Whiting for a nice meal, after a walk about town, stopped at Harry and Agnes place.  Harry and Johnny were out hunting all day.  Harry got two pheasants.  He gave us one and a box of comb honey.  For Aunt Mary a “Wolf River” apple, it weighs a pound.  We’re back home at 945.  Norbert Mueller is down with a sore throat.  Saw Ruth Marheine today, first time in a month.
21.  Monday: Norbert Mueller’s condition is worse today.  Dr. Joe Kronzer injects Penicillin 600 000 Units.  I do relief work at the West Store.  Worked 11 ½ hours today.
22.  Tuesday: Did not get to Kiwanis luncheon today.  Norbert is showing some improvement.  Worked 11 hours today.  Thres – Marianne – and myself attend Perpetual Help Devotion.
23.  Wednesday: Cleo Vogt White is 23 years of age today.  This is also her 3d wedding anniversary.  Leona Luft has a birthday cake for her.  It is a very small one, a cupcake with birthday candles.  Visited Norbert this afternoon.  Dr. Kronzer is there, at the time.  Aunt Lena is here to clean the storm windows.  The Oshkosh National Bank open for business 13 years ago today.  Warren Coe is chosen as President of the Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce.  The John Bearntsen building is purchased by Oliver Davies and Leo Wolfe Props of the City Cab Company.  Will be operated by Carl Smith.
24.  Thursday: Aunt Mary is 73 today, and it is a day of much rain.  No special celebration, but she does get mail and also money.  Annie Heip and George –Aunt Lena –Mrs. Ed Fretschl  –Donald each send a dollar – Rose and Marion Weisheipl 50 cents each and two dollars from yours truly, also presents from Thres and Mary Ann.  Grandpa Fretschl  is 90 years of age today.  Still helping out at the West Store, Norbert expects to be back on the job tomorrow
25.  Friday: Out to visit Ella Eberhart 945 – 10th St. Tells all about her operation, her high blood pressure bothers her very much, also over to Fretschl s to congratulate Grandpa, also over to Mary Nigls 9th and Ohio.  Had a note from Father Grant, Wilmington Delaware.  Norbert Mueller is relieving Ted Furman at West Store today.  He feels well enough to get out of it.
26.  Saturday: Had a long distance call from Norm Brown today.  He is at Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital (Room 334) confined with a broken left ankle.  Looks as tho he may have to stay at least a month.  Mother – myself of – Mary Ann to the Oshkosh to see “A Boy A Girl and A Dog” Starring Jerry Hunter –Sharyn Moffett –Harry Davenport and “Lucky” the Pup.  Roy Rogers – Trigger –George “Gabby” Hayes – Dale Evans – Jack Holt – Bob Nolan are featured in “My Pal Trigger.”
27.  Sunday: [T] To 730 Mass Saint Vincents, then to work.  At 12.45 left with Aunt Lena – Mary Ann – Thres for Mt. Calvary for the Annual Bazaar at Saint Lawrence College.  Mary and wins a bottle of Claret.  I some glass dishes, Thres almost won some groceries.  Back home for supper.  I walked to the store for a change.  Back home from work by 9 P.M.  Annie Heip – Thres Fretschl  are here to celebrate Aunt Mary’s birthday.  Took them a little time to get started, but a few tonics brought them to hilarity especially Annie Heip.  Took them home at 130 A.M.  Forgot to mention, I had a visit with Rector Gerald Walker at the Laurentianum.
28.  Monday: [TG] We are having rain this evening temperature is also moderating.  General C.R. Boardman is 86 today.  Born in town Empire, Fond du Lac county Oct. 28 – 1860.  Killian C. Frey passed away at Chicago yesterday.  Born in Oshkosh Oct. 19 – 1862.  Married Bertha Staudenraus Oct. 19 – 1895.  He operated the “Tremont Hotel” here for many years.  He since operated hotels Clintonville – Logansport Ind. – Benton Harbor Mich.  “The Tremont” is now the Milner Hotel.
29.  Tuesday: Joe and Annie Weisphel are married 40 years today.  Thres and myself attend “Kiwanis Song-fest” at the Athearn Hotel this evening.  Oshkosh is host this year.  Well attended; Beaver Dam gets the cup this year.  Temperature stays at 68° all night.  I also attended the roundtable Kiwanis luncheon this noon.
30.  Wednesday: Al Leonard is in town and he is just in time to see the plans for our contemplated Super Store.  Took a drive to Appleton tonite to see Norm Brown at the hospital.  Sybelle – David – Susie and Normie are with him.  Met Mr. and Mrs. Schwandt, who purchased the Schlintz Drug Business from Harvey and Fred.  Don Laber, Asthma Nefrin salesman also dropped in.  Rexall One Cent Sale opens at our North Store today.  Dropped in to view remains of John Penzenstadler when we came home from Appleton.

31.  Thursday: A busy day at the store to end the month.
