Diary of Alfred E. Potter June, 1947

01.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Vincents, then to work.

03.  Tuesday: Arthur J Krause was elected Commander of the Cook Fuller post #78 of the American Legion last night.  To Kiwanis luncheon, Ed Ledvina and myself break bread at the same table.  Dr. Charles (Chuck) Behnke showed colored pictures he took in Italy during the war.  Most of them were 8 mm #369 films from our allocated stock.

05.  Thursday: Naomi Miller takes a day off, she is busy shopping.  Thres and myself art Father Reul’s parsonage tonight, to fill in the questionnaire in regard to Herbert Stryckers coming marriage to Eva Dumke.  Greg Sitter is also there to see Father Reul.  Stopped at the Sitter funeral home to view the remains of Herman Steckbauer.  Met his cousin Louis Steckbauer from Antigo.  He is 82.  Dr. Jos. Steckbauer was in to see me at the store this afternoon.
06.  Friday: Milton Dooley is in to see me this morning.  It’s a busy day.  This evening after a trip to the west store with Mary Ann, took some magazines to the Sisters.  Sister Edgar gave me some typewritten articles about the order of Notre Dame.  I delivered them to Joe Kubasta for filing with our publicity items.  Aunt Lena –mother, Donald and Jerry Polishinski are at the cottage to clean up and get the place ready for occupancy.  To 700 Mass with mother

07.  Saturday: This is a busy day.  Moved bed and Dresser to Ben Heins this morning.  Had a 20 minute luncheon and back to work.  After work cleaned our garage and this evening took mother and Mary Ann to the Oshkosh.  “The Homestretch” in technicolor stars Cornel Wilde Maureen O’Hara with Glenn Langon and Helen Walker.  “Jewels of Brandenburg” is a good detective picture.  Mrs. Margaret Hoffman wife of Richard Hoffman passed away at 1140 this morning of a heart attack.  Mother to Mrs. Harold (Eva) Mueller.  Born Feb. 18 -1876.  Golden Wedding Aug. 7 – 1944.
08.  Sunday: “Corpus Christi” is celebrated at our 730 Hi Mass, also Holy Name Sunday.  A procession in church with the “Blessed Sacrament” and the singing of the “Te Deum” concludes the service.  Visited Harry Lyman at the County Home and Frank Campbell at the Sunnyview San. this afternoon.

09.  Monday: [T] Was called out to Frank Drexlers this morning.  He has something like stomach flu.  I made up a bottle of medicine for him.  Incidentally I also saw their baby.  Weighs over nine pounds, and is doing fine
10.  Tuesday: Eva Mueller’s mother is laid to rest this afternoon.
11.  Wednesday: To Walter Patri's office for a final check up on Mr. and Mrs. Muellers estates. The Parker Pen man is setting up a pen inventory for us. Printed matter for the Notre Dame Sisters Centenary drive arrives today. I'm the first to try out our new shower at home. It works very well. This evening we attend the Oshkosh. “Boomerang” stars Dana Andrews, Jane Wyatt, Lee Cobb. Based on a true story. “Vacation Days” stars Jerry Wold, “Spade Cooley” and their orchestras. When we arrive home from the show, the Kujawas are here. Our “Boots” showed off with his catnip mouse to the delight of Mary and Johnny. The folks left for Berlin about 12.30.
12.  Thursday: Did more cleaning up in Lymans garage. Had Ed Fretchel along. Mary Ann attends C.Y.O. party at St. Vincents. Father Alphonse Wagner is in charge. Thres and Aunt Mary spend the afternoon with Betty (Mrs. Frank) Drexler and Frank's mother Anna, and of course the baby. They had not seen the little newcomer.

14.  Saturday: Our “Boots” lost his life in an unusual accident this afternoon.  He was playing with “Goldie” Steinert and found a minnow on a hook near Koch’s.  He tried to eat the minnow and swallowed the hook also and was unable to release it.  He managed to tear off the fish line and by pulling strangled himself to death.  Thres went over to bring him home but we could not revive him.  We’ll surely miss him for a long time.  He was such a pet.  William Jungwirth and Hazel Hefty are married 10 A.M. 15.  Sunday: St. John’s Congregation is celebrating their golden jubilee today. Bishop Bona is here from Green Bay. St. Johns Church was dedicated June 13, 1897. First pastor was Father J. Morrisey to 1905, Rev. James Hogan to 1919, Rev. Wm. Mortell to 1932, Rev. John McGinley May 1932 to July 1932, Rev. Jos. Ahearn to 1938, Rev. Roland Ahearn 1938 - 1939, Rev. Francis McKeough June 1939 to Sept 1939, Rev. Les. Courtney Oct 1939- May 1945, and Rev. John Murphy the present pastor. This evening Ed and Thres Fretchel, Joe and Annie Weisheipl, Aunt Lena Baier are here for "Fathers Day" celebration. It ended at 130 A.M.

16.  Monday: Had a meeting of our stockholders tonite after work.  Eddie Weisheipl is in on the meeting.  Ray Lennon passed away yesterday.
17.  Tuesday: [T] We are having a real nice day for a change.  Ben Hein is here to clean our rugs, and he does a fine job.  Ed Fretschl trims our shrubbery.  Kenny Allmers lost his wife Louise this morning at Mercy Hospital.  Born in Allendale N.D. Oct. 2 – 1912.  Married Kenny Dec. 16 – 1937.
18.  Wednesday: To Father McKeough’s Rectory for short visit.  He will see Mr. Lyman.  This afternoon visited Mr. Lyman and brought him more clothes a nice suit and 2 pair of pants.  Ruth Smith passed away 650 last evening at Mercy.  Born Feb. 5 – 1904.  Survived by husband Victor, 2 daughters and 4 sons.  We knew her as Ruth Beglinger, clerk at Baun & Collins.  Sister to Herb Beglinger.

21.  Saturday: Herbie Stryker and Eva Dumke are united in marriage by Father Reul at St. Marys.  We attend the service – the dinner at the American Legion and also the reception in the evening.  Also took in “The Yearling” at the Strand starring Gregory Peck –Jane Wyman and Claude Jarman as “Jody.” Its a technicolor.
22.  Sunday: Fred Baumgartner had an accident at the North Store this morning.  He spied a big rat in the doorway when opening the store for the day.  He gave it a kick and lost his balance falling into a plate glass window 16 X 8 breaking it.  He was fortunate not to be hurt.
23.  Monday: John Kitts Jr. was electrocuted this afternoon while trimming branches in town of Nekimi.  One of the branches hit a power line.  He evidently had a hold on the branch at the time.  Born Green Bay July 27 -1922.  Married to Mrs. Marion Lambert Feb. 1 – 1947.
24.  Tuesday: Jim Stube Manager of Sears Roebuck local passed away suddenly of a heart attack at 145 this morning.  He was a member of our Kiwanis Club.  Born June 19 – 1913 Waterloo Wis.  Attended Kiwanis luncheon.  Joe Kitz – Bob Kriz –Bill Kemnitz – Joe Rodler and myself comprise one table.  Thres and Mary Ann move to the cottage today.  Aunt Lena is here to stay with Aunt Mary.
25.  Wednesday: Had our first party at the cottage tonite.  Ed Fretschl sprays the apple trees, the first time this year.  Thres Fretschl – Joe and Anna Weisheipl are there.  It’s a fun party.  Broke up at 145 A.M.
26.  Thursday: Attended services at Kiwanis members for Jim Stube at the Congregational Church.  Carl Binder passed away this morning 1230 at Sunnyview.  Born Sept. 6 – 1902.  Married Regina Hemmer June 21 – 1926.  Brother to Frank – Ed – and Rich Binder and Mrs. Pete Moraski – Mrs. Jos. Suda – Mrs. Wm Steckbauer –Sister Laurice.  Took Aunt Lena along to the cottage tonite.  Lawrence Kinateder spends the evening year entertaining Aunt Mary.
27.  Friday: [T] Presented Father Scanlon with life insurance policies for the Apostolate. Received a letter written in English from Alice Rothbauer in Parsberg Bayern. It is fairly good English. The folks are back in town from the cottage. Had a bad electrical storm during the night. No electricity from 3 A.M. to 5 P.M. Temperature is 86° today.
28.  Saturday: Harold Prideaux gets his message at the North Store.  This is his last day there.  Temperature is 92° today.  Having quite a storm tonight.
29.  Sunday: [T] To 730 Hi Mass St. Vincents, then to work.  After dinner took Mary Ann along to make delivery at 1036 No. Main then stopped at Menominee Park and watched the experts in Archery.  Father Leo Ott and J. Frazier are there.  Had an unusual experience at the store tonight.  Ready to go to the Post Office at 9 P.M. could not locate my keys.  After over an hour’s search thru the store and basement called Alvin Golz (Bank Examiner) at 409 So. Park and learned he had taken them from our desk when mailing some reports, thinking they were his own.
30.  Monday: Many homes and stores find themselves with water in basements due to heavy rain Saturday night about 10.30.  Our Store basement suffered as well as our basement at home.  Start cleaning up the basement at the store this afternoon.  Donald helps me.  Our Chrysler engine is being overhauled at the Bet-ter garage.
