Diary of Alfred E. Potter April, 1944

01.  Saturday: Ed S. Baranowski, our neighbor passed away this morning at 630.  His demise the sun.  Born in Berlin Dec. 12 – 1873.  Annie Weisheipl spends the evening with us.  Eddie Weisheipl comes over after work.  Thres Fretchel sends a big loaf of rye bread.
02.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Johns then to work.  Mrs. John and Mrs. Theodore Stadtmueller are over to visit Thres this afternoon.  Mrs. Tony Paulick 631 – 14th was over this evening.  Took Aunt Mary along tonight to view the remains of Ed Baranowski.  Father Courtney prayed the rosary, with the K C’s and others present.  Then more work than to the post office and when I get home Joe – Annie Weisheipl are here with Mrs. Thres Fretchel.  Thres brought a cake – Annie some jell.  They left at 130 A.M.                     Com.  Ed Baranowski
03.  Monday: [2M N] Attended funeral services for Ed Baranowski at St. Johns.  Father Courtney celebrant with Father Francis McKeough – Nillis Trebiatowski, Father Bastian –Father Scanlon in the sacristy.
04.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon, we are entertained the F.F.A. (Future Farmers of America).  Russel Beck and Marvin Kitz were next to me.  Howard Gram was the speaker and he sure was interesting.  Max Weisheipl has a heart attack this afternoon while it work.
05.  Wednesday: To Directors meeting Chamber of Commerce.  Thres has to have Dr. Wagner over again today.  If she does not get better in several days, she may have to go back to the hospital for short time.  Thres Fretchel is 57 years old today.  Wendell Willkie withdraws from race for nomination as candidate for president on the Republican ticket at Omaha Nebraska.
06.  Thursday: [4M] Ed Fretchel brings a nice big loaf of rye bread made by Ma Fretchel.  Am getting to be quite a nurse these days, and if you don’t believe it asked Mama Potter.
07.  Friday: Thres is up a little this morning to get the door ready for “Gropfens.” Aunt Annie Weisheipl comes in to make them.  Our stores are closed from 12 to 300 P.M.  After attending church, I clean our cellar.
08.  Saturday: Donald comes home today about 5 P.M. for few days of Easter Vacation.  Frank Steckbauer at the Continental is kind enough to take care of Donald foreclose this evening.  Ruth Marheine is taken to were home today from Mercy Hospital.
09.  Sunday: To St. Johns 730 Mass and the church is packed, also many communicants.  Worked from 10 to 12.30 and from 7 to 8.45.  Dress is feeling a little better today.  Annie and Joe Weisheipl and Thres Fretchel are here tonite.  I bring them in at 9 Oclock and take them home at 115 A.M.  Lawrence Kinateder stays with Donald overnite.                 Com.  “Thres.”
10.  Monday: [T] Father Bastian brings Holy Com.  To Thres this morning.  Joe Baier and Art Mueller begin their summer schedule today.  Joe is off this afternoon and tonite.  Attended Kiwanis Directors meeting at the Elks Club today.  Lawrence Kinateder is here for breakfast and dinner.  Donald Jungen is in to see me at the store.
11.  Tuesday: Emma and Mama Siewert are over to visit Thres this afternoon.  Kiwanis learn about the tuberculin test today.  Dr. Bellis and Lockhart our guests.  Our table J.A.  Breese – Gene Vogel – O.R. Jones – and myself.
12.  Wednesday: [2M] A lovely day.  Took Donald – Melvin Karst –Clarence Drexler and Harold Stadtmueller back to St. Nazianz this afternoon.  Mary Ann also comes along.  Dr. Donald Hugo is over to see Thres this afternoon.  He is undecided as to what he can do for her.
13.  Thursday: Dr. Leonard Smith passed away suddenly in his office this afternoon about 4 Oclock.  He had bad goodbye to his last patient only a few minutes when he suffered a fatal attack.  Born in Fond du lac Dec. 14 – 1896.
14.  Friday: [4M] This is a day of blizzard and snow.  Albert Heidl passed away suddenly last night about 930 while at work at the Paine Lumber Company.  Born June 4 – 1890.  He and I were classmates at St. Vincents.  Married Clara Hable April 26 – 1910.
15.  Saturday: More snow and blizzard today.  Driving is not so good.  Lorraine Poklasny and Adolf Bloesl Jr. are united in marriage at Sacred Heart Church this morning.  Rev. Gregory Putzer of St. Nazians read the wedding mass.
16.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Johns.  View the remains of Dr. Leonard Matt.  He is laid to rest this afternoon.  Rose Weisheipl drops in to go to church with Mary Ann.  Jennie Pable drops in this afternoon to see Thres.  Joe and Annie Weisheipl here tonite.  Picked them up at 845 took them home at 100 AM.  Carl Pfeiffer’s mother Lydia is 50 years of age today.  They have quite a celebration.
17.  Monday: Got announcement this morning that Fred G. Birr passed away during the night.  Born Sept. 1 – 1879 in the town of Morgan near Green Bay.  Married to Helen Barsch May 11 – 1910.  Brother to Harry Birr.  He belonged to the “Onion Club” years ago when I was a member.  The “Onion Club” was a fun club for men.
18.  Tuesday: [2M] Did not attend Kiwanis lunch today.
19.  Wednesday: [4M] Rose early today. Father Bastian brings "Holy Communion" to Thres. Marion and Rose Weisheipl are over for a visit tonite. Took Mary Ann to see “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” in Technicolor at the Oshkosh.

23.  Sunday: [T] To St. Johns Church 730 Mass with Mary Ann. This is a big day for her even tho it rains most of the day. Rose Weisheipl takes her to Madame Curie at the Strand. In the evening she is confirmed by Bishop Bona of Montana. Rose Weisheipl is her sponsor. Aunt Lena is with us today for the first time since she was relieved by Ray Ostertags. We all have supper at Weisheipl's, it was Thres' first time out of the house for nearly a month.               Com “Mary Ann”
24.  Monday: Get ambitious tonite and cleaned the attic (rear), and it surely needed it. Could not get past the door when entering. Mary Ann surprizes us today by making muffins for supper and believe me they are good.

26.  Wednesday: Took a drive today to Fond du Lac, also to see Donald, brought him some tennis balls. Visited Ed Worm on the way back.
27.  Thursday: Visited Tony Pable at Sunnyview and left him an envelope.  Father Bastian drops in for short visit at our house this evening.  Ed Fretchel cuts down one of our trees on our front lawn.  Frank Demler, 1048 – 11th is laid to rest.  Services from St. Johns Church.
28.  Friday: [N 2M] Colonel Frank Knox, Secretary of the Navy, passed away today of Washington, D.C. of a heart attack suffered Tuesday afternoon.  Born in Boston Jan. 1 – 1871.  He was publisher of the Chicago Daily News.
29.  Saturday: [T] Father Bastian brings Holy Communion to Thres this morning.  Leo Jungen is in town, and comes over to see me with Aline.  Had to make out a sample will for him.  He expects to leave for overseas duty shortly.
30.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns.  Aunt Lena Baier is here for the day.  Weather is warming up gradually.  Lena wins a bag of flour at the Holy Name card party at St. Vincents this afternoon.  Annie Weisheipl is here for supper.  Carrie Bauer and Clara Grabl visit Thres this afternoon.  I pick up Joe Weisheipl and Thres Fretchel for our card party tonite.  We celebrated Joe’s birthday at the same time.  Took them home at 12.30 and Lena out to Ann Ostertag’s.  Ruth Marheine is in the store today, first time I’ve seen her since she was at Mercy Hospital
