Diary of Alfred E. Potter October, 1944

01.  Sunday: [TEG] To 730 Mass St. Johns, then to work.  Edward Le body helps is out today.  Took Thres and Mary Ann to Strand to see “Maisie goes to Reno” starring Ann Southern – John Hodiak –Tom Drake.  “The strangers in the Night” is quite a story of evil incarnate starring William Terry – Virginia Grey.  Worked from 8 to 1030 P.M. closing the books for September.
02.  Monday: Father Leo Schiffler –St. Veronica Church Milwaukee drops in for a visit this afternoon.  Hadn’t seen him for about two years.  Father Victor Kandy also dropped in.  Cleaned the coal bin tonite.  It will serve some other purpose from now on, as we have no further use for coal or wood.  Our store is very cold today, no furnace fire.  Ed Fretchel says the hot water tank leaks and I think I’m due for a cold.
03.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon with Dave Collin.  William Sears Radio Editor – Playwright and United Press correspondent spoke on what to do about local and world barriers.  He also spoke about the Bahai religion and philosophy in his talk.  Our table Abe Kagan – Lee Conroy – Joe Schroeder a newcomer in Oshkosh and myself.  My cold is starting to bother me.
04.  Wednesday: Had a visit with Father Bastian this afternoon.  Also over to see Mrs. Frank Bloechl 1657 Georgia.  She was hurt at our merchandise chute at the store when Lyle Runke opened the door from the inside.  Dropped in at the Nuernberg’s to see if Father John is still in town.  Find he is at Mercy Hospital for a checkup by Dr. Spooner, Milwaukee, then over to see Art Mueller at T and S Tobacco Co.  Alfred E Smith four times governor of New York passed away at 520 this morning at Rockefeller Institute Hospital born Dec. 30 – 1873.  Had little formal education.  Was in politics at 22.  Ran for president on the Democratic ticket in 1928.  Was nicknamed “The Happy Warrior.” Carried only 8 states, he received 41.2 per cent of the total vote.  He made the “Brown Derby ” famous.  Body will lie in state in St. Patricks Cathedral, Friday P.M. until Saturday.
05.  Thursday: Took a drive to Sunnyview to date to visit Tony Pable.  He is looking very good.  Jennie was out to see him also.  Said hello to Carl Binder.  He is doing well.
06.  Friday: My cold is still going strong.  Granted a few raises today.  Ed Weisheipl $5 - Eliz. Samuel 5 dollars- Jane Mueller - Cleo Vogt each 2 dollars, Leona Luft 1 dollar.  Mrs. Cyril Bouchelle is removed from Mercy Hospital to the General hospital at Madison.  It is the first time the “iron lung” bought by the J.C.C. Auxiliary has been loaded and used.           Com.  Donald – Mary Ann
07.  Saturday: Pontifical Requiem Mass for Al Smith this morning at New York.  Over 220 000 passed the bier to pay their last respects.
08.  Saturday: [T] To 730 St. Vincents Holy Name Mass.  Ed and Thres Fretchel are not feeling very well today.  Both have chills and a cold acting somewhat like flu.  I work until nearly eight then we call for Aunt Lena Baier and visit at the Weisheipls.  Played cards till near midnight.  There is no liquor, much to the chagrin of Annie Heip.  We had a very enjoyable evening, but missed Thres Fretchel.                      Com.  Kate Vogel
09.  Monday: Visited Anna Drexler 1210 – 9th St..  She is in bed but not feeling worse, in fact she shows some improvement.  Father Michael and Stan Dembowiak and Collette are here.  Stan is putting on storm windows and taking care of the garden.  Norman Brown and Fred Schlintz come down from Appleton.  We hear “Elmer Wheeler” author of tested selling sentences at the Recreation Hall.  We visit Mary Kollross after the talk.
10.  Tuesday: View the remains of Frank Kaatz at Fiss & Bills.  Died in Milwaukee last Friday of a heart attack.  Born in Oshkosh May 17 – 1896.  Brother to John and Joe.  Rose Weisheipl complete 33 years of light of today.  Took Thres along to visit Anna Drexler tonite.  After the visit we view the remains of John Esslinger at Sitters.  He passed away Sunday morning at 430.  Born Nov. 20 – 1861.  Met John Jr.  From Chicago at Sitters.                    M.O. 11.  Wednesday: Attended Chamber of Commerce directors meeting.  Officers elected Gerold Lestrange – Ray Kivell – Emil Dickman – and Jim Cudlip.  New directors at the meeting Ed Schrank – Charles Wittmack.  Cleaned the garage at our place tonight.  Lawrence Kinateder spends the evening with us.

14.  Saturday: Put on storm windows at the house this afternoon.
15.  Sunday: [T] To 730 Mass St. Johns then to work.  To the cottage this afternoon to bring back a few items such as card tables – chairs – ladder etc.  Harry Kujawa family from Berlin have supper with us.  Bill and Emma Siewert and Aunt Lena Baier are here for the evening.  Card game breaks up at 1 A.M. folks leave at 130.  I hit the hay at 2.
16.  Monday: To Kiwanis Directors meeting and luncheon at the Athearn.  Joe Weisheipl Sr. begins working at Bell Machine Company.  It’s another watchman job similar to the others he had at Wisconsin Public Service Co. and at Leach Company
17.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon our table J.A Bresse – Joe Drasal – Earl Clemans - Frank
18.  Wednesday: Put on storm windows, “the uppers,” and thats more of a job than the “lowers.” “Boots” climbs up the ladder to follow me and has me nervous for a time till I get him back into the house.
19.  Thursday: Took Aunt Mary to see Herman Miller, her cousin.  He is confined to bed and is not any too well.
20.  Friday: Art Mueller is operated this morning at 10 Oclock for “Fistula in Ano.” Joe Weisheipl Sr. helps out at the Continental tonight and will be Friday nights and Saturday afternoons.  John Kellerman husband of Mary Paulick is run over by a car driven by Donald Klitzke 20 as he and Louis Paulick were crossing Iowa on twelfth street going west.  The accident occurred about 10 oclock last night.  John was almost instantly killed.  Born in Austria Aug. 26 -1888.
21.  Saturday: Over to see Mrs. John Esslinger this morning.  Frank is there with her.
22.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns, then to work.  We are quite busy and we have no cigarettes, none yesterday or Friday evening.  This is the first time we have been entirely out of cigarettes since we've been in business.  After work tonite to Fretchels for short visit.  Marion is here from California.  This afternoon we view the remains of John Kellerman at Poklasny’s.                  M.O.  John Kellerman
23.  Monday: [T] I dont feel so good today.  Stomach disorder is much more pronounced this afternoon and evening.  Visited Art Mueller at Mercy today, he is doing well, also visited John Bauer and find Walter Slattery to be his room mate.  Walter broke his leg.  Joe Baier and Ed Fretchel visit Art tonite.  I’m very tired after work and go to bed immediately after I get home.
24.  Tuesday: Aunt Mary is 71 years of age today, and is still pretty chipper.  This evening we took her to the Oshkosh to see “Stage Coach” with John Wayne –Claire Trevor –Andy Devine –John Carradine – George Bancroft, also Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy in “The Big Noise.” This afternoon took Mary Ann Fretchel Larson to depot with her baggage to have it checked for San Diego.  Dr. Norman Kleinschmidt gives my teeth a going over.
25.  Wednesday: Marion Fretchel leaves today for California.
26.  Thursday: Had a “Rexall” meeting at the Raulf tonite.  Jim Mc Millen is here from Boston.  Clayton Stearns and Mrs. are here from Omro and some of Doug Hunts folks from Wautoma.

29.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Johns, then to work.  Annie and Joe Weisheipl Sr. are married 38 years today.  Spend the day sleeping and sitting around.  Took Ed and Robert Fretchel to the cottage, they take out dock and screens.  Robert does some hunting, gets a pheasant – a rabbit – a squirrel.
30.  Monday: We received news that Stanley Dembowiak and Clara are blessed with a baby girl last Saturday.
31.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon.  Our table Gene Vogel – of his guest Mr. Maloney – Frank Sullivan – Ed Ledvina – Dave Collin – of myself.  Ed Shrank wins my birthday prize.
