Diary of Alfred E. Potter September, 1945

01.  Saturday: This is Maximilian Wachtveitl’s birthday born Sept. 1 – 1893
02.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Vincents, the first mass since vacation began.  Then to work.  To the cottage at 2 P.M.  Took Ed Fretschl – Aunt Lena along.  Harry – Agnes – Mary –Johnny Kujawa – Romy –Lovie Czekalski come over from Berlin.  Harry brought a bucket of minnows and night crawlers – Ed a jar of snails and with all these luscious bait, we caught only 3 Fish.  The folks left for home at 1215.                     Com.  Thanksgiving
03.  Monday: Ed went fishing at 6 A.M. came in at 1020 with no fish.  Claims he had only 2 bites.  I think they were mosquito bites.  Joe – Emma – Joey – Baby Mary Jane Baier are up this afternoon.  Bill and Emma Siewert, about 4 P.M.  A live game of sheephead takes up the afternoon.  Supper at 8 P.M. more cards and home at 10.15 P.M. and that spells the end of vacation

05.  Wednesday: Took Thres Fretchel and Aunt Lena to the cottage this evening for a game of cards.  After several hours of hard work I find I have’nt made a cent

07.  Friday: To church at 7 A.M. St. Vincents               Com.  Donald – Mary Ann
08.  Saturday: This is my last morning to relieve Norbert at the West store.  Elizabeth Samuel is going back to work for us Monday.
09.  Sunday: [T] To St. Vincents 730 Mass with Holy Name Society.  Then to work.  Visited Father John Nuernberg at Mercy Hospital this afternoon.  He has been here for obstructed bowel treatment for over a week.  Had a call from Elizabeth tonight, she wants to start working for Muirs tomorrow instead of us.  What to do the last minute, a generous raise makes her decide in our favor.                  Com.  Father John Nuernberg
10.  Monday: Thres and I leave for Chicago at 1115.  The driving is pleasant arrived at United Drug Company at 415.  Frank Piskade takes my order.  We put up at the Sherman, had dinner at Harding’s on Clark Street.  Took a long walk, stopped to take in an all newsreel picture.  Eliz. Samuel is back at the West Store after a months rest.  Agnes Zarter wife of Richard Zarter passed away this morning of a heart attack.  Born March 13 – 1904 in Fond du Lac.  Funeral to be Thursday morning 900 at St. Vincents.
11.  Tuesday: Out early to United Drug Henry Apida took care of my order.  Meeting of W. D. Wholesale at 11 A.M.  Mr. Giffing and Mr. Richards from Boston are here.  Mr. Scheringhausen and myself complete our three years term as directors with this meeting.  Had luncheon at the usual place back to the hotel at 330.  Dinner at Pellegrin’s.  Took in Woods Theatre “Danny Kaye” stars as the “Wonder Man.” Its a technicolor and very comical.  A lunch at the “Darby Inn” completes the day.
12.  Wednesday: To: Roberts this morning Mr. Simonson is looking natural.  Then to Benzinger Brothers.  Alice Walsh meets Thres.  Bought Fonts-Books and Vigil Light Holders.  Took Thres to see the ballgame at the Cub Park.  The Cubs play the Philadelphia Athletics. Wyse and Barracks are the opposing pitchers, Cubs win 4-0.  Drove out to see Rose and Bob Gittings.  Had dinner with them at the Tally Ho Inn where both of them work. Phil Thimmes is the proprietor.  Back to the hotel at 1115.  Ed Fretschl is 60 today.  Emma Baier goes to Milwaukee Sanit. today.
13.  Thursday: [T] And today it rains and rains.  Drove to McClurgs after breakfast at the Triangle Restaurant on Randolph.  McClurgs have a nice display, then to Sales Builders “Max Factor” on Grand Ave. from there we shopped at the “Stop and Shop” and the “Avenue Linen” on Washington and then we checked out at the Hotel and leave for home at 315.  Rain until we hit Wisconsin.  Stop at “Falls Restaurant” at Menominee Falls for a big steak dinner, home at 915.  We learn Joe Genal passed away, over to Fiss and Bills to view the remains.               M.O. 14.  Friday: Back on the job this morning.  Joe Genal is laid to rest.

16.  Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass St. Vincents then to work.  Visited Father John Nuernberg at Mercy Hospital this afternoon.  He is not doing so well.  Hilda Nuernberg to Chicago tonite.  We visited Ed Fretschl’s tonite, to celebrate his birthday.  Joe and Annie Heip and Aunt Lena are there.  Cards as usual is the diversion.  Home at 12.45.
17.  Monday: Eliz. Samuel begins work at Muir’s today.  Joe Weisheipl begins working day time at Bells warehouse the old Gunz Durler Candy Factory.  He has worked nights for a long time.  I am back at the West store mornings, Art and Joe relieve Fred at north store mornings.

19.  Wednesday: Monsignor Aloys Bastian celebrates today.  A high Mass at 10 A.M. with about 75 priests and four Monsignors present is followed at 12.30 with the banquet.  Many invited guests present.  Judge Roland Steinle and Joe McGinnis and other Milwaukee people at our table.  Monsignor outdoes himself with refreshments and a wonderful chicken dinner.  Mrs. Byron Gunz takes care of the chickens.  Met many priests we know.  Father Victor Kandy is operated by Dr. Spooner for bladder trouble at Mercy.

22.  Saturday: Took Thres and Mary Ann to Strand.  “Along Game Jones” features “Cary Cooper – Loretta Young –William DEmarest –Dan Duryea – Frank Sully and produced by “Cary Cooper.” Did’nt care too much for this picture.  Enjoyed “G.I. Honeymoon” starring Gale Storm.
23.  Sunday: [T] To 730 Mass St. Vincents, then to work.  Had quite a bad rain and windstorm this afternoon.  I visited Father John Nuernberg and Victor Kandy at Mercy.  Victor is doing fine – John seems to be weakening.  John & Mrs. Grines are in to see Victor, Mame Nuernberg to see John.  Tonite attended childrens reception for Monsignor Bastian.  Mary Ann sang.  After the reception had Thres Fretschl and Aunt Lena Baier over for cards.  Break up at midnight.

27.  Thursday: [T] Mylda Berndt (Mrs. Albert Weinzierl) gave birth to twin girls this morning at Mercy.  Dr. Wm Wagner attended her.  Dr. R.H. Bitter who is home on furlough and for whom she worked for years is also present.
28.  Friday: Hirschberg’s Department store formerly Baum & Collin has formal opening today.  It is a rainy, cold fall day, but business is very good.
29.  Saturday: Attended Strand Theatre tonight with Thres and Mary Ann.  Took Joe and Annie Weisheipl along.  This is the first time in years we could take them, because Joe had to work nights.  “Guest Wife” features Claudette Colbert – Don Ameche –Richard Foran.  “The Adventures of Rusty” the Boy and Dog Picture features Ted Donaldson – Margaret Lindsay – Conrad Nagel, two very good pictures.  War time ends tonite in most of the country.  This means an extra hour of sleep.  We have been on war time since Feb. 9 -1942.
30.  Sunday: To 730 High Mass St. Vincents then took Ed Fretschl to cottage to trim trees.  He could’nt do much because of rain.  Worked in the morning.  Rains in town from noon on.  Visited John Nuernberg at Mercy this afternoon.  He looks weaker.  Also dropped in to see Mylda Berndt Weinzierl.  The Dr. (her husband) came in and treated with a cigar also dropped in to see Gustia Voelz.  She is much dissatisfied.  Worked until 830 this evening.  Joe – Annie Weisheipl, Thres Fretschl spend the evening at our house periods cards are in order until 12.30 A.M.                    Com.  Father John Nuernberg
