Diary of Alfred E. Potter February, 1946

01.  Friday: To St.  Vincents 7 Oclock.  Esther Churchill gets a divorce from Lawrence today.     Com.  Donald – Mary Ann
02.  Saturday: To St.  Vincents early Mass after breakfast back again to sell candles as is our custom.  Joe Baier and Ed Fretschl bring the candles.  Donald also helps out.  Its 10° below zero of this morning.              Com.  Theresa Murphy
03.  Sunday: To 730 Hi Mass St.  Vincents and it is another cold morning, 6° below.  Worked this morning.  After a fine steak dinner, we are all down for a nap.  No need for supper.  Took Ed – Thres Fretschl – Aunt Lena Baier to the Strand.  “Yolanda and the Thief” stars Fred Astaire –Lucille Bremer – Frank Morgan.  “The Hidden Eye” stars Edward Arnold.  He takes the part of a blind detective.  After the show we play sheephead at our house.  Call it a day at midnight.  Art Mueller is 44 today.                      Com Katherine Reifer.
04.  Monday: [T] Busy with inventory, completed the basement and also the prescription case, called it a day at 11 P.M.  Temperature is moderate but the cellar was very uncomfortable and I catch myself a bad cold.  Harry Reetz, died suddenly yesterday afternoon at 1.15 at his home 832 – 15th St.  of a heart attack.  Born Oct. 31 – 1890, at Dover Minn.  Married Grace Trotter June 4 – 1913 at Omro.
05.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon.  Stanley Bruemmer talks on Industrial accidents and their prevention.  Our table Charles Behnke and Chuck (Dr. Behnke) George Harrington – Frank Thew and myself.  My cold is no better.  Lou Howser rep. William R. Warner drops in for his last official visit.  Introduces his successor.  W.C. Estes (Wrisley) is also here today.  Tis a very foggy day.  Temperature is 44° tonite.
06.  Wednesday: [R 2 M] My cold is going strong today.  Had a fairly good night.  Temperature is down to 20° with snow and much wind.
07.  Thursday: My cold is no better.
08.  Friday: [N] Staid in my bed this morning, to work this noon for the rest of the day.
09.  Saturday: [R 2 M   T] Herb Wall is in with little Jimmy.  I asked Jimmy what he did with two candy bars I gave him some time ago.  He answered, I gave one to my brother Peter and I gave one to myself.  He also asked his daddy to make him a banjo out of a cigar box.  Well he’s quite a boy.  My cold is a little better today.  Donald Jungen stops in this afternoon.  He is still at Manitowoc, with the Aluminum Corporation.  Aunt Mary now has a bad cold.  My cold is somewhat better.
10.  Sunday: To 730 Mass with Holy Name at St.  Vincents.  Donald served.  Then to work.  This noon we celebrate Donald’s birthday as he has to go to school tomorrow.  This afternoon we take Bill and Emma Siewert were a drive to Fond du Lac.  I had an appointment with Lou Kronbloom at the Retlaw.  He had a nice line of merchandise and the trip was worth while.  Eddie Worm called me up while there.  Mr. Kornbloom treated us to a steak dinner.  Back home at 930 played sheephead with Will and Emm until 12, then I took them home.  Aunt Mary could not attend Mass today.                        Com.  Holy Name Members and Special
11.  Monday: Donald is 18 today.  The day is uneventful.  Mother goes to Ladies Auxiliary Club and Rose Schneiders on 12th  St. .  This evening Donald takes some of the St.  Vincents Holy Name Basket Ball Team to Ripon to play the F.F.A.  Our boys lose 60-44.  Donald made 13 points.  Yesterday afternoon at 4 Oclock at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Melvin Jansen and Ruth Petri are married.  Melvin is the son of Herman and Angie Jansen –Ruth the daughter of Mr. Mrs. Clarence Petri.
12.  Tuesday: Aunt Mary fell out of bed this morning at 415.  Hurt her left arm and the forehead.  Took Harry Ferry and Ralph Sperry to Kiwanis lunch.  Dan Schreiber showed a movie a vote Phil Mont, Boy Scout Ranch.  The city of New York experienced a shutdown of practically all business – schools – churches – and amusement places from last night midnight until 6 P.M. today, to conserve fuel on account of the nine day strike of 3500 Tugboat workers.  The strike is about to be settled by arbitration.
13.  Wednesday: Aunt Mary’s cold is gradually leaving her.  Secretary Harold L. Ickes leaves Harry Trumans cabinet today.  He was secretary of the interior for about 13 years and one of the last New Dealers, it not the last, in The Presidents Cabinet.
14.  Thursday: [R2M  T] Donald registers with the draft board for military service. Uncle Joe Weisheipl goes with him. Aunt Mary feels very sore all over her body today result of her fall.
15.  Friday: Mercury drops to 7° below zero this morning.
16.  Saturday: Took Mary Ann to Oshkosh Theatre tonite.  Mother stayed with Aunt Mary.  “Wildfire” story of a horse stars Bob Steele – Sterling Holloway – William Farnum – Virginia Maples – Sarah Padden – Francis Ford.  Zane Greys novel “Wanderer of the Wasteland” stars James War in – Richard Martin – Audrey Lange.  Norman Brown – Appleton –had the two middle fingers of his right hand cut quite severely last night about 730 by the fan in the engine of his car.  He thought something wrong with the radiator and felt in by it while the motor was running.
17.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St.  Johns, then to work.  Thres – Marianne to St.  Vincents Hall this afternoon, with the ladies had a bingo party for the benefit of the Sisters.  The Sisters also played, all the prizes were given to them.  Thres gave bed sheets pillow cases and two bedspreads.  This was a rear treat to the Sisters as bed sheets are very scarce these days.  Aunt Lena is with us for supper.  Tonite Annie Weisheipl and Thres Fretchl our also over.  Annie Heip had a busy week, Sunday at Serwas for cards, Monday Ladies Society, Tuesday Cath. Women & Wactveitl Shower – Thursday Another Shower – Wednesday Cath. Knights Party – Friday Club 41 Saturday Home, Sunday Potters until 1 A.M.  She sure can take it.
18.  Monday: [R2M] Dr. Wm Wagner came back Saturday night from the Mail Clinic where he spent about a week getting a general checkup.  He is found to be O.K.  Hugo Hoeveler proprietor of Hoevelers Drug Store – Waukesha passed away today after a short illness.  He used to belong to “Druggist Service Bureau” and I met him in Milwaukee occasionally.
19.  Tuesday: To Kiwanis luncheon.  Curt Walter entertained with magic.  Ed Schrank and myself our table partners all by ourselves.  Ed thinks it will be quite some time before they will receive new refrigerators (General Electric).  Our “Boots” found a new way to get into the house at night.  He jumped from a tree to the roof of the house and rattled the screen to Donald’s bed room window.  Donald promptly left him in.
20.  Wednesday: [T] Sister Aquilina (Mercy Hospital) called me on the phone this evening to say goodbye.  Her heart condition has shown little improvement.  Took Aunt Lena –Aunt Annie –Mary Ann –Thres to the Strand and did we sit a longtime from 7 until midnight.  Saw 3 pictures.  Aunt Annie was drowsy, too much picture for one night.  Main features “They Were Expendable” starring Robert Montgomery – John Wayne – Donna Reed.  “Dangerous Partners” with James Craig and Signe Hasso.

22.  Friday: Lillian Wagner tells me the doctor had what is called “middle ear infection.” Pope Pius XII created 32 new Cardinals this week, four of them American.  The new American princes of the Church are Francis Cardinal Spellman, New York, Samuel Cardinal Stritch Chicago, Edward Cardinal Mooney, Detroit and John Cardinal Glennon, St.  Louis.  This brings the college of Cardinals to 69.  This weeks consistory has been the first since 1940.
23.  Saturday: [R2M] I am still battling a cold.  This is about 3 weeks and I havent made any headway to speak up.  If received a letter from Resl Kral Rothbauer.  Her address now ŭlice 6 kŭetná Vimperk 2ˇ49, Šůmavá Č.S.R.  She expects they will have to move shortly.  Lt Gen Tomoyuki Yamashita famous Japanese General “Tiger of Malaya” was hanged before dawn today, stripped of his uniform and all medals of honor.  He was executed 30 miles southeast of Manila near Los Banos, where his soldiers a year ago butchered 2000 Philipino Civilians.
24.  Sunday: To 730 Mass St.  Johns, then to work.  Stayed in this afternoon taking care of my cold.  Worked an hour this evening getting out order.  Took Mary Ann along.  Margaret Hanson tells me she has a new relative, her brother Bob Voelz is a daddy again.  Its another girl.                     Com.  Thanksgiving.

26.  Tuesday: to Kiwanis Luncheon, Simon Horwitz spoke.  Our table with Milton Jenson – Ed Durler –Ralph Witherbee – George Harrington and yours truly.  Reorganized Troop 18 (St.  Vincents) Boy Scouts tonite, had our meeting in the church basement.  M. Fitzgerald is chairman of our Troop Committee.  Paul Fink is back at scoutmaster –Frank Dichtl is an advancement man –I’m treasurer.  Bernard Poeschl has a birthday, I believe he is 86.
27.  Wednesday: [T] Robert Voelz is in town for a day.  He tells me the family is fine.  His first little girl was a year old February 7th.  Her name – Margaret Ann.  The new baby’s name is Mary Elizabeth.
