01. Sunday: To 730 Mass with
Mary Ann and Mother at St. Johns. Louis
Mauritz drops in with little Jacqueline this morning. The temperature is quite high 73°. This afternoon Harry, Agnes –Johnny and Mary
Kujawa coming in from Berlin. Harry has
a different car acquired thru being administrater for an estate. The folks stayed until 945. Picked up Aunt Annie Heip tonite after work. She staid until 130 A.M. We played 3 hand sheephead. Com. Intention of the Holy Father for peace.
02. Monday: [T] This is “Civil Air Patrol” week in
Oshkosh. Mrs. Rudolph Miller is laid to
rest. Father Roger Miller, her son, is
the celebrant at the Solemn Requiem.
03. Tuesday: To Kiwanis
luncheon “Dick Kimball” back on furlough from the European War Theatre, gave an
interesting talk on what is going on over there. He was a Nazi prisoner for a
time, but later escaped. Our table George Harrington, Frank Sullivan, O.R.
Jones, Ray Baxandall, Myself. Clarence (Wally) Bronson and Warren Coe are
elected school commissioners. Clarence got 2190 votes. Corky Coe 2031.
04. Wednesday: Dr. Norman Kleinschmidt gives my
teeth a going over. Marge Haverty
(Weisheipl) has a birthday. I think she
is 31 years of age. There is a very
heavy wind, nigh unto a gale, out today.
Attended “Chamber of Commerce” Directors meeting this noon. Better attendance than last time. Buzz Bell – Charley Wittmack – Corky Coe –
Irv Sill – Dave Johnson –Ed Schrank –Jerry L Estrange –Jim Cudlip – Mr. Kline, Klines
Dept Store is the new president of the Retail Division Chamber Commerce.
05. Thursday: Thres Fretschl has a birthday. She is 58.
We play cards at her house tonite.
Annie Weisheipl was there, Joe as usual, could not come.
06. Friday: [T] To St. Vincents 7 Oclock. Attended Kiwanis. Sponsors meeting at County Garage tonite. Find I have a job, Chief Judge at the Boy
Scouts Merit Badge Show. Com. Donald – Mary Ann
07. Saturday: The Boy Scout
Merit Badge Show opens a 230 at the County. I'm on the job
judging at 2 – 4 - 6 and 8 P.M. Howard Godshall - Harold Watson help me. This
evening at 800 Frank Thew - and Doc Nordhoof help me. The
displays and activities are very good. I find myself quite tired tonite after
the show, I go back to work.
08. Sunday: To 730
St. Vincents with Holy Name Society, then to work. This afternoon back to Merit
Badge Show and also to attend Forester meeting at St. Vincents to make plans
for the coming golden jubilee. At the Boy Scouts Show we awarded 15 Blue
- 12 Red - and 3 Yellow Merit Badges, Back to work this evening and after work to
Bill Siewerts. Emm is there with a friendly greeting. I was lucky at cards.
Mame Siewert is with us. Aunt Lena Baier gets a sick spell while there. We also
have a surprise black-out. Carl Hanson is 30 today. Com.B.H.Kersker
09. Monday: Attended meeting of the Kiwanis
Directors at the Athearn.
10. Tuesday: Two Kiwanis luncheon, took Dave Collin
over, our table Frank Labudde – Hugo Riese – Bart Heiss
11. Wednesday: [T] Charlotte Arendts car burned
out the inside early this morning, in the gasoline station across from our
south store. She is one of our lady
clerks. The cause of the fire is as yet
undetermined. I understand she was with
Naomi Mueller.
12. Thursday: The entire world is shocked today by
the sudden death of our beloved President Franklin Delano Roosevelt at 3.35
this afternoon of a cerebral hemorrhage at his cottage atop Pine Mountain Warm
Springs, Georgia where he had come to rest almost two weeks ago. Sitting in a chair, while sketches of him
were being made by an artist, he was suddenly stricken at 1 oclock, and lost
consciousness within a few minutes.
Thres and I visited Anna (Mrs. John) Drexler tonite. Met Mrs. Pekorny who worked with Clara
Drexler in Milwaukee, at Allis Chalmers.
13. Friday: Ed Fretschl is back to work today. He was laid up with a cold yesterday.
14. Saturday: The body of
President Roosevelt arrives at 10.15 this morning for funeral services this
afternoon. Tonite the remains will be taken to Hyde Park, his home, for burial.
Donald leaves with the Col. Squires Basket Ball Team for Beaver Dam. They are
to play for the championship. He drives his own car. Our stores close
today from 130 to 6 oclock. Took Mary Ann and Thres to
see “Belle of the
Yukon” featuring
Dinah Shore - Randolph Scott - Bob Burns - Gypsy Rose Lee - Charles
Winninger. Its a technicolor picture. Also “The Power of the Whistler” by Richard Dix and Janis Carter.
15. Sunday: To St. Johns 730
Mass, then to work. Our beloved
President is laid to rest this morning at his home lot in Hyde Park, only a
short distance from the Roosevelt Library, which he donated to the U.S. government
in 1939. It is also only a few feet from
where he was born at the Roosevelt Hyde Park estate in 1882. R.I.P.
Wrote letters and send packages to Leo Jungen in Germany and Donald
Jungen, Keesler Field Miss. Weather
today is cold and rainy.

17. Tuesday: Eva Jungen gets the sad news today
that her husband Joe died in a German prison camp March 27th. He was captured by the Germans February 22nd. Took Thres to the Oshkosh tonite “Here Come the
Coeds” with Abbott and Costello and Phil Spitalny and his Hour of Charm all
girl orchestra, also “Youth on Trial.”
18. Wednesday: Visited at the Weisheipl’s tonite. I believe this is the first time I said Joe
Sr. since New Year. Never saw him
looking so good. Thres Fretschl and Aunt
Lena Baier are there also. Over to see
Eva Jungen this morning, and meet her four little children. Sam Luchsinger has a birthday.
19. Thursday: Memorial services for Joe Jungen at St.
Vincents this morning. Spent the evening
at F. W. Muellers. Mrs. Mueller has been
in bed for two weeks with high blood pressure.
Walter Patri is with us part of the evening.
20. Friday: Russians are seven miles from Berlin. Joe Weisheipl and Marge Haverty are married
six years today. This is Adolph Hitler’s
birthday. Born in Braunau Austria April
20 – 1889. Sang in the choir school in
the Benedictine monastery at Lamback.
His father was a customs inspector, died when Adolph was 13 years of age.
21. Saturday: Took Thres and Mary Ann to see “God
is my Co – Pilot” starring Dennis Morgan –Raymond Massey –Allan Hale – Andrea
King and “Strange Illusion.”
22. Sunday: [T] To 730 Mass St. Johns, then to
work. Rained a little today. Temperature between 40 and 44. Back to work this evening. Thres and I played cribbage for change. Beat her up 124 to 59 first game. Then we knuckled down to business. Second game is hers by 1 point. Third game is mine by 2 points, and then we
called it a day. Carl Jungen is in to
say goodbye. Going back to Denver. Com. Joe Jungen
23. Monday: Donald Jungen blew in from Yuma
Arizona last Friday night. Visited in
Manitowoc, came to Oshkosh yesterday, missed seeing Carl by 15 minutes. Visits with us this evening and stays with
Donald overnight. Shirley Temple is 17
today.
24. Tuesday: Took Dave Collin to Kiwanis luncheon. Lieutenant Homer “Bud” Pipkorn, Johnny Bangert
– Ed Olson – Archie Gifford – Ozzy Witte and A.E.P. our table
25. Wednesday: World Peace Conference opens its
San Francisco this evening, with 46 nations represented. To St. Vincents 630 Mass. Believe it or not, I was the only man
attending, in only a few women, Madelaine and Josephine Bastian – Mrs.
Nuernberg and Gertrude – Leona Lueck – Amalia Fuchs. Com.
Success of the San Francisco Peace Conference.

27. Friday: Paul Bishop makes his last visit at the
store for Eli Lilly. He is going to
study medicine at Madison.
28. Saturday: Father Leo Courtney receives notice
from Bishop Bona, that he is to be pastor at “Our Lady of Lourdes” at Marinette. He will begin his duties at the new pastorate
May 8th. Took mother and Mary
Ann to the Strand tonite. “Bring on the
Girls” in technicolor stars Eddie Bracken – Sonny Tufts – Veronica Lake –
Marjorie Reynolds. Spike Jones orchestra
plays. “High Powered” stars Robert Lowry
–Phyllis Brooks. Ida Marheine, mother of
Edwin and Urban Marheine passed away this morning at 11.30. Born in Black Wolf Aug. 17 – 1862.
29. Sunday: To 730 Mass St. Johns, then to work. Benito Mussolini (61) falling ruler who
headed Italy’s government for 21 years was slain yesterday with his mistress
Claretta Petacci when and also 16 other Fascists. Taken to Milan some of the bodies including Mussolini’s
were strung up heads down and while on display in the public square for
battered – spat upon and disfigured by the crowds. Com.
