Diary of Alfred E. Potter August, 1944

01.  Tuesday: Had company tonight when I arrived at the cottage.  Alois and Anna, Dolores Kinateder and their cat “Smoky.” Laurence for wrote on his bicycle.  Almost did not attend Kiwanis luncheon before Dave Collin.  It was lucky I was there.  I won the first prize I have ever won at the Kiwanis luncheon, 4 pair of very fine socks donated by Gene Vogel whose birthday will be Sat, Aug. 5th.  Thanks Gene.
02.  Wednesday: A hot day coming up.  Alois Kinateder takes Jake Ries along to the cottage.  Laurence and I did some fishing all small ones is the best we could do.
03.  Thursday: Laurence did some more fishing with better luck than yesterday.  Took “Boots” to Dr. Taylor this morning.  Doctor does not locate any shot in his leg.  He may have licked it out of the wound.
04.  Friday: [N] “Pal” our dog spends his last day at the cottage.  The folks brought him in tonite and I took him out to Lyle Runke’s.  Lyle intends to make a hunter of him.  Dropped in to see Anna (Mrs. John) Drexler this morning.  She is better but still quite weak.  Had a letter from Harry and Agnes Kujawa today.  They were at Milwaukee with Marge over the weekend.
05.  Saturday: Dolores Kinateder has a birthday, she is fourteen.  To St. Vincents 7 Oclock Mass this morning.  Aunt Lena is also there.  To the Strand tonite “Four Jills in a Jeep” Carole Landis –Kay Francis – Martha Raye –Mitzi Mayfair – Alice Faye – Betsy Grable also “Tampics” with Edward G. Robinson –Lynn Bari.

06.  Sunday: To 730 Mass at St. Johns.  This afternoon took Thres and Mary Ann to Strand.  “Ladies Courageous” starring Loretta Young – Geraldine Fitzgerald – Anne Gwynne – Diana Barrymore – Evelyn Ankers – June Vincent – Louis Collier – Phillip Terry – David Bruce – Frank Jenks – Richard Fraser, also “The Bridge of San Luis Rey” starring Lynn Bari – Akim Tamiroff –Frances Lederer.

07.  Monday: George Blitz is 53 years old today.  Took Annie Weisheipl and Aunt Lena along to the cottage tonite.  Annie wants to spend a few days at the cottage.  Naomi Mueller takes her vacation this week.
08.  Tuesday: Took Thres Fretchel along tonight to the cottage, and the gamblers stayed up until 330 A.M.  Well there was a reason, it was our 33’d wedding anniversary.
09.  Wednesday: Took Bill Siewert and Laurence Kinateder along to the cottage this noon.  Had to bring Thres to town this morning, to attend South Side Business Mens Auxiliary outing at Mrs. Scheins cottage.  On the way back Emma Siewert burnt out of bearing in the ladies are chauffeured out to the cottage by Joe and Mary Fenzl.  The party at our place broke up at 10 Oclock and Bill Siewert feels bad about that.
10.  Thursday: Temperature rises to 99° today officially altho many thermometers register above 100°. Winnebago Ice House burns down this afternoon in a short time. Heavy Southwest Wind helps to fan the fire. Loss about 20 000 dollars.
11.  Friday: [T] Brought Laurence back this morning.
12.  Saturday: Brought Annie Weisheipl back today from the cottage.  She spent 4 ½ days with us.  Laurence Kinateder and I did some fishing this afternoon, caught about 40 and 5 Varieties – Cat – Bullhead – Sunfish – Sheephead – Perch.  Gave them to the Ed Fretchel family.
13.  Sunday: To St. Vincents 730 Holy Name Mass. To work until 1230. Donald takes a lesson in driving this afternoon. He drove out to the cottage and back. Temperature rises to 100° officially this afternoon. Took Aunt Lena, Ed and Thres Fretschel along for a visit to Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Mueller at Fahrnwold. Harold and his family are there. Marion Weisheipl is 24 years old.

14.  Monday: Ed Fretschl reports that he is grandpa again. Rose Weisheipl takes her vacation this week. Father John Nuernberg is operated on at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. “Lefty Edwards” Oshkosh All Stars Basket Ball player opens a tavern at the old Charles Rang stand, 13th & Oregon. He has his “Grand Opening” tonite. Roses for the ladies.
15.  Tuesday: [TEG] To St. Vincents 7 Oclock Mass.  We also vote today.  Primary Election.  Took Thres – Marianne – Carol Steinert – Aunt Lena to the cottage tonite.  Primary Election today.

16.  Wednesday: Took Bill and Emma Siewert along to the cottage this noon.  Bill and I caught a nice mess of the fair sized perch.  Cards in the evening as usual, to bed at 230 A.M.
17.  Thursday: Brought Bill and Emma back to the city this morning.  Rose and Marion Weisheipl are in Milwaukee for a few days.
18.  Friday: Joe Baier brings the folks back to town tonite.  Joseph Jungwirth “Mossbaum Sepp” passed away yesterday afternoon at 2.30.  Born in Austria Feb. 24 – 1867.  Father to Jake and Joe Jungwirth – also Mrs. Mary Binder –Mrs. Joseph Bloechl –Mrs. Walter Herdina – Mrs. Roger Laughlin.
19.  Saturday: Took Aunt Lena – Thres – and Mary Ann to the Oshkosh.  A technicolor picture featuring Red Skelton – Esther Williams – Basil Rathbone – Harry James orchestra – also Xavier Cugat orchestra is outstanding.  Also “Silent Partner with William Henry –Beverly Loyd is good.
20.  Sunday: [T] To St. Johns 730 Mass, then to work.  Donald serves 730 Mass at St. Vincents.  View the remains of Joseph Jungwirth this afternoon, at his home.  Took Mary Ann and Thres back to the cottage after supper.  Had quite a rainstorm, our electric lights went out.  Wrote letters to Marge Radomski – Rose Gittings –Karl Radomski.  Rose and Marion Weisheipl home tonight from Milwaukee.                     
M.O. Joseph Jungwirth
21.  Monday: Charles Looman Fell an old customer of ours passed away Saturday 11 P.M. at his home 181 Jefferson Ave.  Born in Osbow New York Sept. 4 – 1860.  Celebrated 64th wedding anniversary 1943.  Father to Mrs. Sydney (Gertrude) Smith.
22.  Tuesday: Jack Post is 39 years old today.  Had Larry Gerdes as guest at Kiwanis luncheon. Murl Deusing, assistant curator at Milwaukee Museum brings us a lecture and colored movies on “Big Game Hunting in Your Backyard.” Very interesting.  Larry informs me of the passing of Frank Mueller (Fred Stearns salesman) at the Hotel at Eau Claire, Thursday evening about 9 Oclock Aug. 3d.  Frank suffered a heart attack.  Was 53 years old.  Called on us quite a number of times.  R.I.P.
23.  Wednesday: Thres attends outing of ladies auxiliary at Herman Jansen cottage.  Bill Siewert goes with me at noon to the cottage.  We do some fishing with their Lac.  Ladies home at 530.  Played “Schofskopf” in the evening.  Party broke up at 2 A.M.  I got to bed at 230.
24.  Thursday: [2M] Bill and Emma Siewert left early this morning.
25.  Friday: [2M N] Joe Baier brings the folks back tonite.  They had fish fry for supper.  I’ve missed out on the two last ones.
26.  Saturday: [4M T] Ed Weisheipl's car is laid up due to tire trouble. Waiting for two new ones from the Tire Ration Board. In the meantime he uses my Plymouth. Took Thres and Mary Ann to the Strand. Gary Cooper stars in “The Story of Dr. Wassel” in technicolor.  “Goodnight Sweetheart” a comedy starts Robert Livingston.
27.  Sunday: [N] To St. Vincents 730 Mass, then to work.  Tis a day of rain and a good day to stay home.

29.  Tuesday: [4M] Thres spend the day at the Kalbus cottage at Leonard’s Point with the Ladies Auxiliary S.S.B.M.  Winnebago County Fair opens today.
30.  Wednesday: [T] Attended the fair today.  Took along Aunt Lena –Annie Weisheipl –Bob Llewellyn.  The acts are very good.  In the evening had Aunt Lena and Annie at the house.  It rains much tonight.
